haven't tried for vob, but a nice lil' tool:
http://thelittleappfactory.com/evom/
another well-known converter, esp for DVD>>Apple-toys-usage is
http://handbrake.fr/ (don't worry, english spoken)
note to Mods: the latest version is NO ripper (=DRM-override), but a converter..
both free, no additional installs needed..

best method of wma audio file conversion for iTunes/iphones

    Fazel,
As you know, iTunes for Mac is not capable of processing WMA files.  The two best choices are:
Get access (even temporarily) to iTunes for Windows.  It can convert your WMA files to the format indicated in import preferences.  Use a USB flash drive to copy the files back to your Mac.
Use a 3rd party conversion program.  The one most preferred by Mac users is EasyWMA.
In either case, once you have the converted files, add them to your iTunes library.  Then delete the WMA originals.

  • What is a good vob file converter for mac?

I want to use some old family videos and stills in a new iMovie.  How do I convert .BUP, .IFO, .VOB files to use in iMovie?

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
If you are running Lion or later:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion onwards, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. (The same applies to Mountain Lion even though that has it preinstalled.) You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • VOB file won't play with MPEG2 codec

Okay, so I have a few DVDs I want to put into iPod format, and I followed the directions here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1081409&#1081409
The first DVD I tried worked perfectly, it plays on my iPod fine. Now the second DVD I tried, after ripping the VOB using DVD Decrypter, I opened the VOB in QT, and its only 8 minutes long. I'm 100% sure I ripped the right set of VOBs, in DVD Decrypter it says its 90 minutes long, and when I open the ripped VOB in PowerDVD it plays fine, all the way through. But it plays really weirdly QT, it does the first 4 minutes, then the last 4, then after watching the last 4 if you scroll back you get something in the middle...soooo any help getting QT to read this VOB correctly would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Could QT be reading only the first "chapter" of the DVD?
Go to the "File" menu and try opening the next chapter using QT.
It could also be an issue of "broken" time code (stamps) in the file. A look at the Movie Info window would show you what QT is trying to play.
If the "entire" file is being opened by QT and the MPEG-2 component (the movie info window shows 90 minutes) then the time code needs repair. A quick Google search should describe the issue and point your to some software that can "repair" the file.

  • MTS File Conversion for iMovie

    Dear Apple Support Community,
I am struggling with movie file conversions, and getting the optimum results from such a process before starting my editing work in iMovie.
I have a Canon HD camcorder which records movies according to AVCHD standards. Before using iMovie, I need to convert the .MTS files to a format which is compatible with iMovie, and I have tried the following:
Copy the files from the SD card on to my HDD.
Using Toast 11 (Titanum), I have selected different profiles to convert the file to formats such as MOV, M4V, MP4 etc.
The converted files yields a size that does not match the original one i.e. a 300 MB file after being converted, is now either 791 MB, or 96 MB in this case.
When importing the converted file into iMovie, iMovie still wants to optimize the file for some reason (I believe using APPLE INTERMEDIATE CODEC resolves the optimization issue)
Import the files directly from the SD card into iMovie, provided I have not altered the original file structure i.e. when inserting the SD card, iMovie recognizes the SD card the same way it would for connecting the Camera. When I select the videos to be imported, iMovie does so without hassles, but the files again turn out to be bigger than the original file by a factor of between 2 and 3, depending on the original file.
What is the best way to convert files to preserve the quality as close as possible to the original?
Is it normal for coverted files to be larger than the original file after being converted (smaller makes sense, but bigger just baffles me)
    Thanks for any feedback!

    Thanks for the great feedback.
I do have struggles though in general, part of which originates from my camera itself.
My camera still has a tendency to record an interlaced effect even though my settings are confidently selected to progressive (I have 50i and 25p to choose from - 25p is my selection).
However, when I use Toast Titanium, I have an option to select the source video to be deinterlaced, but Toast does not do a good job at deinterlacing, compared to Handbrake. The benefit of my Toast Preset is that I can covert the video to an Apple Intermediate Codec, which means that when the files are imported into iMovie, the process is rather quick.
When I convert using Handbrake, the software does a pretty **** good job at deinterlaing, but the downside is that I cannot find a preset that makes import into iMovie satisfactory.
So, in light of all this long discussion I gave, my question is really, what is the best file converter for iMovie to convert MTS files that need to be deinterlaced.
    Thanks for any help!
    Adios

  • File conversion for more than one level of substructure

I have the following file format that needs to be converted into XML, but because it has more than one level of substructure I'm not able to give the correct file conversion parameter
    source file sample:
    1headeryyyyyyyyyyyyy
    2itemsyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
    2itemsyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
    2itemsyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
    3trailer1yyyyyyyyyyyyy
    4trailer2yyyyyyyyyyyyy
    2itemsyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
    2itemsyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
    2itemsyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
    3trailer1yyyyyyyyyyyyy
    4trailer2yyyyyyyyyyyyy
Thus you see above that there is one header followed by a bundle that conrains many items and 2 trailers and this bundle can repeat any number of time.
Could anyone let me know how to parse this type of file to XML?
    Thanks,

    somebody help me in this?

The time it takes will be dependent on your network.
You can see your current connection by going to speedtest.net
HD content will need at least 6mbps for instant playback
Make sure DNS is set to auto (settings - general - network)
    If on wifi try ethernet

  • Need advice on a strong laptop for playing/ recording music / .wav files

I primarily use my laptop for music and enjoy making .wav files and hooking up to main stereo of house.  I've been experimenting with my daughter's laptop but I had to buy a sound card that attaches to the laptop.  Are there any good laptops out there with a good enough sound card available internally?  On my desktop I had a similar problem and needed to upgrade sound card to get the "what U hear" option.

Recording is a different story.  In general, almost no system will have good internal recording capability, even with an internal addon card.  Recording is best done with an external device.
You are confusing TOSLINK optical ouputs with digital coax outputs which are what they normally put on multi-media desktops to provide digital audio output though some older desktops did have TOSLINK ports. There was a period of time several years ago when you might find TOSLINK on a high-end multi-media notebook but digital coax was the standard in those days and that has obviously been replaced by HDMI which carries both digital audio and video signals.
In my experience, when it comes to laptops, HDMI will produce no sound. I too have seen a handful of laptops that support TOSLINK in the form of a 3.5mm connector, and even the standard sqare connector(not common, however).
If you aren't getting sound from your HDMI port that means your digital audio output is incorrectly configured, the digital audio signal is not in a format that your HDTV or display can recognize (simply uncheck the Dolby Digital, DTS, or WMA Pro boxes in the properties panel for your digital audio output), or the port on your display doesn't accept digital audio or is set to use analog audio in the settings. If you look in your TV's manual or dig up the manual online, the specs page will tell you what digital audio formats it accepts if any. A lot of older HDTVs with HDMI, as well as a lot of the first monitors with it, didn't accept digital audio over HDMI because they were using repurposed DVI chipsets which could be modified for use with HDMI by swapping out the DVI connector with an HDMI jack due to the fact that HDMI shares it's base video protocols with DVI. All it takes is fifteen seconds to figure it out if you know what you're doing.
Ya, a mere few hours after I made that post, a friend hooked up his newer laptop to my TV via HDMI, and sure enough...there was sound. Me stands corrected.

  • File conversion for DVD

    Hi:)
I'm trying to export a 3 minute and 25 second edited video to burn to DVD. The video was recorded on a Canon HV20 (consumer HD) and on HD DV tapes, when I make a Quicktime movie the quality looks great but when try to burn that on to DVD using iDVD the DVD won't play. I tried exporting using quicktime conversion to make an avi file but the quality of the footage was seriously comprimised, though I could burn that avi file on to a DVD the playback quality was crap. Can anyone offer advice on the best way to convert Final Cut Express edited footage to burn on to a DVD? thanks in advance for all your help!

  • Advice needed on backup config. for Mac and Windows XP

I'm trying to work out my best options for configuring a way to backup both my Mac and XP machines and at the same time use a hard-drive as a type of media server (or at least somewhere to hold shared photos etc).
    Current hardware is:
    - MacBook connected to wireless router
    - XP laptop connected to wireless router
    - XP desktop connected to router via ethernet
    - PS3 connected to wireless router
    - iPod touch connected to wireless router
Am I right in thinking that Time Machine with Time Capsule will back-up my Mac but not in a way that makes the files on it accessible to other devices on the network. If that's the case then would I also need to copy any shared media separately? I guess I would also need separate software to back-up the XP machines.
What format would I need to use to hold files accessible to both systems?
Could I use TC to hold a shared iTunes library? Even if the music is currently held separately on XP and Mac?
All advice/bright ideas welcome. Obvious alternative is just to get hold of an external USB2 hard drive and move it around.

An MSDOS formatted drive should not be used for OS X backups. If you need to do PC backups then I would suggest a separate external drive. Otherwise, format the drive for use with OS X (Mac OS Extended.) Get MacDrive (Media Four) for the PC which enables Windows to read/write Mac drives.
Alternatively if you think you are sufficiently skilled you can try the technique outlined here for creating HFS+ and FAT32 partitions on one drive.

  • Advice Needed Using GPRM Registers For a Quiz/Testing DVD

I have a customer that wants a DVD that will play several instructional videos and after each video jump to a Q & A.  That part is easy enough.  The trick is:
He also wants to track of number of right and wrong responses during the Q & A.  My thought is to use GPRM registers to keep a tally.  I could use a bit schema to track which answers were correct ( ie 1010 binary would mean, from right to left, 1st & 3rd answers were wrong, 2nd & 4th were correct).  I could track up to 16 questions per GPRM register.
At the end of the quiz, he wants to display the results of the tally in the GPRM registers.  Ideally, the DVD would display a generated number that would be written down by the student, and given to the tester, who would have a key for what questions were answered correctly.   ie the displayed number to the previous example would be "10" (decimal value for binary "1010" ).
I know I can have a DVD jump to a specific screen based on what is in a register, but that would mean having to generate a result screen for EVERY possible combination of right and wrong answers.
So, my question is, can I dynamically generate something like an "overlay" to display the GPRM contents?
Alternatively, is it possible to generate a URL that would have the GPRM contents imbedded, and passed to DVD@access?  A dedicated page would be displayed and the student would print the page to give to the tester, or possibly have the information entered directly into a database.
The desire of the tester is to prevent cheating by the student, and for the tester to have a reasonably accurate idea of where the student needs to focus his/her studies.  Since I could not find anything every remotely similar to this project in the forum, I am hoping to glean some advice from the pros here.
If I am heading in entirely the wrong direction, PLEASE let me know.  Any advise on the proper approach to this project would be GREATLY appreciated.
I have projected about 16 man hours to complete this project - 5 videos and about 80 questions.  As long as the scripting is as straight forward as I think it is, is this a reasonable expectation?
TIA for any advice and suggestions.
    [NOTE: Cross posted at lafcpug }

    Thanks, Shawn.
All that being said, the best solution would be to not create a DVD. This sort of project would be much easier, and give you better results if you did this in Flash. The only reason I could see to use a DVD would be if the testers only had access to a DVD player and not a computer.
That was exactly my sugestion as well.  But the client is quite insistent on creating the project as a DVD - yes the DVD Player uption is a requirement.
I have created DVD with several thousand links... very daunting, but turned out well and the customer was very happy.
I reviewed the DVDSP manual to make sure what the customer wanted was not covered, but I wanted to make sure.
What I have suggested is that when I student gets an answer wrong that an option is given to review the relavent section.  Since there will be less that 100 question, it would not be a big deal to created an appropriate final score bases on a GPRM value.
Thank you very much for the rreply.  It is greatly apprecaited.
