Advice needed with mix of Bass sound.

Apologies to all as I'm sure this is a 'newb' question, but I need help!
I'm at the final stages of mixing a track. It's all sounding great, apart from one small section in the middle, where the only sounds playing are the kick drum and bass sound.
It's House music, the bass sound is a regular fingered bass.
The problem is when certain lower notes are played, there seems to be too much 'sub-bass' and the speakers vibrate quite annoyingly. I've tested it, and it happens on nearly all speakers I've tried it on.
In the rest of the track, when other sounds are also in the mix with the bass, it is fine. It's just when the bass is alone it seems to cause this result.
I've tried EQing out the lower bass frequencies and fiddling a bit with compression, but I always seem to end up filtering out too much bass (in fact, even when I remove nearly all the lower bass frequencies, the 'annoying' vibration is still there), or removing all life from the original sound.
I know it's very hard to offer advice when just going off a flakey description, but any help would be appreciated.

Create a cycle containing your middle section. Open the channel EQ, and click the 'analyze' button. the analyze display should give you an approximation where the troublesome frequency is. Then select the appropriate band, and set the Q very narrow (higher number, probably around 50), and drag down the level to cut. Be quite extreme in cut dB.
Now slooowly drag the cut left-right around the frequency in question and you should be able to find the point where the resonance is reduced. Now tweak so that your cut is the minimum you can get away with, and fine tune.

Advice needed with Audio Punchin-in workflows for News

I'm testing a new FCP installation for a News Broadcaster and reached a major stumbling block with the recording of Voice Over in tight turnaround situations. Previously the broadcaster fully utilized the 'Audio Punch-in' functionality of Avid Media Composer but we are yet to find a satisfactory equivalent in FCP or Soundtrack.
The Avid workflow currently involves playing out our programme mix on Tracks 1 and 2 to our external mixer whilst simultaneously recording the Programme / VO mix from an external mixer on Avid Mojo i/p 3 and 4 onto tracks 3 and 4. They also record the clean VO from the external mixer via Avid Mojo i/p 5 and 6 to tracks 5 and 6. At any point the journalist could make a vo mistake so they would stop the vo recording and change the punch-in in point on the timeline and proceed to record over the required portion of vo with a defined playback preroll before the vo begins to record.
These tools ensure they can very quickly record vo and fix mistakes on the fly without the need for further editing. The broadcaster relies on this functionality for tight turnaround bulletins and without an equivalent toolset in FCP this could be reason enough not to make the switch to FCP :O(
To summarize they need the following features for voice over:
- simultaneous recording of 4 audio channels
- playing back the recorded track during pre-roll and then switching over to the inputs like a kind of EE operation
- defining the tracks for recording and overwriting the previously recorded material if you record the same part again.
Has anyone on this forum found a way to record VO like this on FCP or Soundtrack? Any advice would be gratefully received.

Open the Help menu in FCP, and search the online user's manual with the words "Voice Over Tool"... FCP has something similar to Avid's tool... you can keep nat sound etc, and record VO right to the timeline window. Even do multiple takes. Video can be routed externally to a monitor in a VO booth too during the record. The talent can have a headphone as well.

Major advice needed with ATT / IPHONE / MICROCELL misleading/doesn't work

I'm sorry if this is a little off topic, but I need some advice.
I've been battling ATT since thanksgiving week. I moved into a house (checked the coverage map before moving, and saw I was in the clear)
I have no service here. NOTHING. I had to use a verizon phone to call them, since Verizon actually works. They tell me they're working on it... weeks go by. A month, and another month of calling them and wondering what they could actually be doing to rectify my problem. Well about 2 weeks ago, ATT's RF engineer was hanging around my house for a couple of days. He told me they didn't even notify him about my problem until days before he arrived! So they were lying to me the whole time about trying to fix my lack of service. I kept asking them, "Can't you lend me a microcell until you fix what's wrong here?" They just said "No, you have to buy that and pay for it's service."
So it's now Feb 25th, and it's day II with my microcell. It shows 5 bars, but most of my calls are dropped, or I'm talking to someone that can't hear me. I emailed them last night asking if I could just be let go from this contract so I can move on and get back to business. They will waive my fee if I give them my Iphone 4 which I've owned for 11 months. Doesn't this seem a little strange??
I mentioned how I've lost many clients and a lot of money due to the fact that they think I'm ducking their calls because I don't receive them unless I drive 2 miles from where I live.
Again, today I talked with the service rep and they will not budge. Is there something in the contract that would help me out? Even the RF engineer/tech told me there is nothing they can do (other than putting up more towers!)
So I'm stuck in this nightmare with a phone that doesn't work, and paying for it. I still have a year on my contract and I just want out. The iphone was fun and all but I'm done with att and their ransom fees.
Can someone help me?

As you know, this is a user-ro-user iPhone tech support site. Neither Apple or AT&T participate here. The only way you can resolve your reception and service issues is through AT&T - no one here could possibly fix this. AT&T does provide free MicroCell service in some known poor coverage areas.
You can try some basic troubleshooting steps as described in the User Guide - Restart, Reset, Restore - but I doubt there is a problem in the phone itself.
IF you're not getting anywhere with AT&T, file a complaint with the FCC. Did the AT&T coverage map showed coverage in your area before you purchased the phone? You might want to get a lawyer to help.

Subs. a nice sized sub anywhere between 10-15" is great.

Newbie advice needed with Safari browser

Hi,
I have got this weird thing going on with safari.
I will go to a website, and it will display perfectly, then I will go to the next and I only get text and no images. Where the images should be I get a little blue square with a question mark in.
Example: I will go to Ebay.co.uk This shows up just fine with images and all.
Then I click on the login button, and the login page will display as mentioned above, with the blue squares.
What changes do I have to make to make this page show up ok as well??

problem is, I don't want viewers to have to vertical scroll on any of the pages, I want the left hand address to always be visible at the bottom of the screen/page and I want the last line of text on in the right bar to line up with the bottom line of the address on the left. I know this isn't the easiest thing to control (due to browser compatibility) but i'm seeking advise for the best compromise/solution.
At the moment, i'm staying safe with a 800 x 600 px page. but to attempt to squeeze the content on the right into a space less than 600px high makes the text too small to read. Was thinking of going up to 1024 x 768 px but am worried that this will lead to vertical and horizontal scrolls.
I am currently using a fixed layout. I have looked into experimenting with elastic and liquid layouts but, and here's the real bind, I want the text content in the right hand bar to line up with the images in the navigation bar!! Am I right in thinking that with relative formats the images don't change it's just the text?

To achieve the pixel perfect precision you're after, you'll need to build your pages entirely with images. Seriously, you can't control where things line up if the end user's settings are not exactly like your own. So don't go there.
Identify your target audience. Desktop/laptops mostly use 1024 - 1280 wide displays.

Excessive horizontal scrolling to see a page is bad practice but vertical scrollbars are perfectly acceptable, and expected by site visitors. You're not doing anybody any favors by making your pages a fixed height. Depending on which toolbars people have opened in their browsers, you may find that 90% of your site visitors are seeing scrollbars anyway.

Advice needed with lining up lines between parent and subreport

I have a report where the main report includes a box and 6 interior vertical lines. The box and lines start in a group header and end in a group footer. Details has several sections, and one of the sections includes a subreport (suppressed when there is no data) that crosses the interior lines. This report is used by multiple customers on a variety of printers.
Inside the subreport, there are two details sections. One detail section has a background color defined.
When the report is generated and the subreport contains data, the subreport section with the background color obscures the line defined on the main report.
We have tried to work around this behavior by adding matching lines in the detail section of the subreport, but we have been unable to get the lines within the subreport to nicely align with the lines in the main report. We'll think we get it fixed up for one printer, but then they are off on another printer.
We have turned off the background and removed the lines. This gives us a perfectly straight line, but the users really want the subreport to have alternating colors.
What other options do I have?

Help needed with getting Audio signal through to Mac Book Pro (using Logic 9 & Behringer Xenyx 1204USB mixer)

Ok so I am sure I have everything set up correctly,
Logic has recognised and is using the mixer, I have sound coming through the headphones when I put in a drum sample onto audio track, no signal going in from audio using the first channel. Audio channel is set up with correct inputs & outputs. USB setting used on mixer......phantom tried on and off with the condenser mic I am using.....still no luck not even changing from mi to guitar. No signal when recording audio...... AAAHHH HELP! Racking my brains!

Yes, Logic is geared to the professional user, you will need to set up the program to your particular way of working, Logic was well developed for professional use long before Apple purchased it, it's not an Apple program per se. It's complex and offers a myriad number of choices so that it can be configured to many styles of working, there's often 3 or 4 ways to perform the same function.
Logic insists the user educate themselves... which is a good thing.

That screen grab helps a lot. There’s a much easier way of doing what you’re doing.
Remove all your tabs and set the text in justified paragraphs.
I’ve typed in dummy text in the example I made below, but after “19.1” put in a space and put your blinking cursor after the space and before the ’N’ of ‘Notices'.
Then hold down the Command key and hit Backspace (on Mac at least - it’s the key between the Inverted commas/ apostrophe key and the return key).
The text will jump into place the way you want it to.

PS You can set a tab, instead of using a space, in the description I gave above. So, after 19.1 or 19.2 or 19.185 etc etc insert a tab, then hit the Command Backspace after every paragraph number and they'll all line up exactly together. You'll find that editing text within the paragraphs
after you've set it will be LOADS easier this way.
You can put the tab anywhere you want it to be using 'Command-ShiftT' and putting a 'left align' tab just after the number. Just type the Command Backspace after the paragraph number and it'll work

Help with mixing my first song in Logic Pro X

Hi everyone,
I am a newbie with regards to Logic Pro X but I feel I am finally in position to mix my first song and I just wondered if anyone had any tips on how I can go about mixing my very first song?
Step-by-Step instructions would be perfect. As this would allow me to learn in a structured way. It would also be helpful if you could give me a brief definition of each effect for example EQ, Reverb, Compression etc and what they are used for in the mixing process.
I would also love to know what volume levels other users use for each specific track when mixing a song.
What volume levels do you use for these tracks/instruments when mixing?

3) Drums
4) Synthesizer Chords
5) Synthesizer Riffs
6) Strings
7) Horns

And lastly I would love to know with regards to the 10 different instruments above how I should pan these individual items/tracks? I have heard so much about Panning vocals to the left side and right side for example but I am unsure why musicians do this or what effect it is supposed to have?

There is no "magic bullet" here. Everyone has their own way of doing this... mixing is truly an art, like painting, you choose the canvas or medium (sidewalk, building...etc.) and you choose you subject, and colors, brushes, palette knife... give everyone the same tools and subject and you will have as many individual paintings as participants... and when you think about it, isn't that what you want? There are rules and there are no rules, only when you fully understand this paradox will you have reached mixing nirvana, grasshopper.
You are correct, fundamentals first. If someone tells you to set a compressor with certain settings... you won't know why those settings were chosen. Take the times to learn the basics.. for effects you want to first learn Equalization, Compression and Reverb.
In your listing you didn't mention Bass.
Traditionally, a mix starts with mixing Drums and Bass.. be careful not to get them as loud as possible, you will need headroom as you add instruments. Traditionally, every instrument in a mix needs to have it's own space, this is done with panning and equalization. If you have a solid bass part.. you don't want the guitar chords to have so much bass they conflict with the bass instrument.

You need a special plug to use the iPod's mic in for the headphone jack. If you compare a headphone plug for a set that includes a mic and one that does not you can see that there is a difference.

How to play a cue point with mixer

I know how to play a cue point of sound with the method:

How can I transfer the method of cue point using the mixer?

iPhone 3gs, 4 or 4s?
With the former two, just drag the videos to the desktop iTunes and sycnhronize to your iPad. They will be synched to the stock Videos.
With the latter, you can either resize the video to 720p (or less) OR use a third-party app (It's Playing, AVPlayerHD, GoodPlayer being the best choices) to play it back. I'd go with the latter to avoid quality degradation and long-lasting reencodings.

How do I change the print orientation for PDFs with mixed orientation pages?

I'm sure this is a fairly basic and easily solvable issue, but I've been searching for a solution and can't find one for the life of me.
The issue: I'm printing a PDF that will be bound book-style, and the file contains pages with mixed orientations (both portrait and landscape). When I print the file, the landscape pages point the wrong way, to the left of the spine, when they should be pointing down to the right of the spine. I've adjusted the print settings for multiple test rounds, and nothing seems to work. Here's a visualization of the problem (apologies for the bad Paint art):

Here's the caveat: I cannot just rotate all the landscape pages counter-clockwise in Acrobat for ease of printing, because it would remove the ability to scroll through the file quickly in Reader or a Web browser, and the same file needs to be both easily readable digitally AND print correctly.
Is this adjustment a print setting? Is this a tool I'm overlooking within Acrobat? Is this outside the scope of what is adjustable? All advice is welcome, and please feel free to ask any follow-up questions if I explained my problem unclearly.

If you are trying booklet printing, try to rotate the pages as needed before you print to the booklet. If you are print booklets without using professional imposition software, then Quite Imposing or Quite Imposing Plus should be considered. I believe they offer a demo version.

Bass-sound disappear when exporting to Adobe Flash Video format

I'm making a guitar-tutorial on video, and want to export parts of it to Adobe Flash video by using Adobe Media Encoder. But when I do that, it sounds like the bass-sound of the band disappear. The sound generally becomes low also. Maybe there is a connection. Anyway, with the sound I have now, I can't use the video in flash format :-(
I've tried bitrates of both 128 and 256 kbps, which should be more than plenty.
Help would be appreciated.

Umm....I assume you're exporting from FCP using QuickTime conversion,
so you can choose a QuickTime movie, H.264, and choose
Frame Rate: Current
Key Frames: Automatic
Frame Reordering: Checked
Quality: Best
Encoding: Best
Data Rate: Automatic ... which then means you don't need to choose DVD/CDROM.
Give that a try and see how it looks.

Bass sound overtone... Does anyone have an explanation for this?

You probably know this high pitched ringing overtone a bass sound can have. I made a kickdrum track in Cubase with a VSTi (Groove Agent One). In Cubase I didn´t hear this tone with this track. I exported it and didn´t hear it in WMP.
Then I imported the track in AA 5.5 and it was suddenly there. Can´t EQ it out; I even tried a LP starting at 33Hz 48dB/Oct. It just stays there. When I export a mixdown from AA, it´s gone... So I can´t let you hear it.
I would like to know how this is possible, because this makes it very hard to make adequate mix decisions!
I hope someone can help me out with this.

Yes, setting the driver to asio in both programs should correct this, but there have been problems with some audio interfaces and some audio applications where the asio and MME settings somehow interfere with each other. I can't remember the details, and it shouldn't affect AA directly, but it might affect other programs.
With those interfaces, the cure is to disable the professional soundcard in the Windows audio control panels.
Here, I am set up to 44.1 but if I run Sony Vegas at 48kHz with MME drivers, I can hear distortion in preview mode, but not elsewhere. You have to be extremely careful with Windows 7 and audio.
Microsoft have confirmed on their Pro-Audio Development forum that the problem exists and also that the low-quality sample rate conversion can occur during recording as well as playback.
