Advice on A video editing system please

Hi,
I'm a serious hobbyist/user of a lot of the Adobe family, PS, Illustrator and more recently Premiere Pro. I've got a Cloud membership package.
My question is this (and I know there will be the full spectrum of kit here from very high-end to low-end, plus Mac v PC) - what would ppl class as a good mid to high range system for me. This is it currently:
asus P7X79 Pro mobo,
16GB Ripjaws 2400mhz DDR5,
Intel i7 3930K 3.2Ghz,
Intel 250GB SSD (Boot),
2 x WD Raptor 500GB Drives in RAID (Media storage),
2 x 120gb SSD drives both scratch.
ATI HD 7950 3GB Graphics (I know NVIDIA for MPE) but I cannot justify buying a Quadro card as this system is only 8 months old and was well suited to the graphics and illustration work.
NEC PA301W 30" IPS screen (25th Wedding Anniversary present)
To give an indication of how fast it performs on processing video currently - a 2560x1600 at 60fps which is in .avi format, gives me 4GB raw footage every minute - If put through AME and encoded to 1920x1080 using H.264 30fps AAC, it takes 4 mins to process each one. these settings give me good end quality against file size.
Is this reasonable? could I maybe change anything and what would you recommend if that is the case? and if anyone has any comments on the settings, i.e. they should be something else, feel free. I'm learning the program through adobe CIB and a well known online video training site.

Your system is quite strong overall, and your 25th Anniversary gift 30" sounds pretty sweet, but you do have two weak spots in the "balance" for a top notch Premiere Pro rig.
Most importantly, you should get a nVidia GTX video card to support the MPE (Mercury Playback Engine) capability. You do not need a Quadro and a GTX 670 or something similar would be a great fit for your other components.
Secondly, but WAY less critical, 32GB or even 64GB of RAM would help some with render speed. It would also help a lot with After Effects, but you did not state that you use it now.

The links Harm provided influenced the original build, but on his advice, I re-read them and decided to alter it and bit.
If I swap out the ASUS Rampage for the Deluxe model, replace the Velciraptor with a Seagate 2TB, and the water cooling with a COOLER MASTER, Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler (rated Gold by hardwaresecrets), then I can upgrade to the larger COOLER MASTER, HAF 932 Advanced and keep the price about the same.
Given my projected video editing demands, it doesn't seem like the ASUS Rampage MB offers much more than the ASUS Deluxe MB and the latter contains BT and wireless.
Since I do not intend to OC, there doesn't seem to be a great need for liquid cooling, especially with the larger tower case. At any rate, it does feel better not put "liquid" and "computer" in the same sentence!
The Corsair AX850 Gold power supply does indeed seem to be a better choice.
There doesn't seem to a concensus in the all the discussions relating to using a SSD vs a hard drive for the boot disk. However, since boot speed is not an issue for me I don't need an SSD and the Velociraptor seems to a unnessary expense. While I don't need 2TB for the boot drive, they are not much more than the 1TB.
The only question remaining is filtering the air. This machine will be in a dusty (but not dirty) environment. I read Harm's thoughts on air filtering provide in his link, but don't want to go the custom route. These aftermarket filters look nice http://www.frozencpu.com/products/11729/ffi-57/DEMCiflex_Cooler_Master_HAF_932_Magnetic_Du st_Fan_Filter_Set_-_4_Piece.html, but for the cost, I'd rather put another $50-60 into the case and get one with good filtering.
Does anyone have experience with a stock Full Tower with complete built-in filters they have actually used in a dusty environment they would be willing to share?

For those of you who cannot afford a proper video editing system...

...don't buy any prosumer video editing program (including Premiere Pro CS5.5). Here's why:
Last night, I ran the PPBM5 test on an Intel i3-2100 system with 4GB of DDR3-1333 RAM, a 500GB OS drive and a 1TB project drive (both drives are 7200 RPM) and integrated (onboard) Intel HD Graphics 2000. (This is the kind of system that one might buy for the purpose of Interner surfing and some limited gaming.) I have just submitted the results to the PPBM5 site.
The result?
With a total time of 976 seconds, that system is around 20 times slower than a fast i7 system (although it was marginally faster than the other systems with dual-core CPUs on the PPBM5 results list). That i3-2100 system also proved that no system with a dual-core CPU performed as fast as a system with even a mediocre-performing quad-core CPU.
In other words, at the lower end, you get what you pay for. This post and thread is to inform how senseless it is to cheap out on the components when building a video editing build.

If you absolutely can't afford the "fully ready" cost of...
16GB DDR3-1333 RAM: $120
4 x 1TB 7200 RPM SATA hard drives: $240
320GB or 500GB 7200 RPM SATA hard drive (for OS): $45
You could START with...
8GB DDR3-1333 RAM (2x4Gig)

And then add Ram and/or hard drives as need and $$ is available

FX5600VTDR128 & Video Editing Systems

I am using a VGA FX5600VTDR with 128Mb Ram on a PC with Video editing software (Premiere pro and Canopus DVStorm) and on the monitor window i cand see any picture from the video in or any clip that is playing in that window.
Any one can help me to solve the problem?

The 53.xx drivers handle nView better than the old ones, but basicly you need to go to the overlay controls of the driver and set the full screen device as the secondary display.

Need help setting up the ultimate video editing system!

I own a cinematic wedding film business. We have pretty significant client traffic, about 40 wedding films per year and still growing. We've decided to switch our post production studio from FCP to Premiere. We've also decided to start from scratch and invest in all new equipment for this switch. We are an apple based facility and will stay that way. We don't really have money/budget limitations. We don't allow budget to to bottle neck our company's efficiency or productivity. We want this editng system's speed, efficiency, and reliability to be priority #1!
On to my questions....
1. We will be purchasing a new mac pro as the primary editing station. What is the fastest, most efficient, and most reliable setup for running the entire adobe creative suite on a Mac pro? Or maybe another way of asking....what is the ultimate Mac pro setup for Adobe CS, and why?
2. I would like to go with an external raid system for all our projects. (We'll use the internal drives primarily for running applications only.) For the external raid, we'll need about 9-12TB of usable space. We need this system to be extremely reliable. What is the fastest connection for achieving the fastest read & write transfer rates between the raid system and the computer (esata, scsi,etc)? Also, what raid systems do you recommend that will meet our needs and why?
3. I would like to make a backup of all current projects twice a week to a seperate hard drive. My business partner will then take this drive home at the end of every day for safe offsite keeping. What do you recommend we do for this? Should we buy another duplicate raid system (same as the primary) and just mirror it, or should we buy a different type/name hard drive system? Should we make the backup system Raid 0 for easier access to files if needed? How should execute the backing-up process...drag and drop, time capsule, or some third party solution?
As you can probably tell, I'm hoping to get specific equipment recommendations and well as process recommendations. Advice in any of these areas would be much appreciated!

New video editing system for AE, GPU questions

Hi all,
I am about to configure a new system to use mainly for After Effects CS6, and Premiere CS6. I'm experiencing some difficulties choosing the right GPU.. If any of you could take the time to answer these question for me..it would be greatly appreciated!
- I read the GTX 7xx with Kepler structure aren't supported/CUDA cores aren't used, is this true of do they work fine?
- Does a good video card (with 1000+ CUDA cores) only help for speeding Ray-traced 3D, or will the overall editing experience be faster as well? ('live preview' while editing 'normal video', as well as the final render?)
- What are the critical factors to look for in a video card for editing? (GDDR RAM, Base Clock, Memory Speed, Memory Interface Width, Memory Bandwith CUDA cores) I mainly work with 1080P digital SLR video and video effects, not a huge amount of 3d texts etc.
- If i would choose the GPU as render engine, will the work be done purely by the GPU, of will it just 'assist' the CPU?
- So far, i think the GTX 760 would be a good option, what is your opinion about this card for AE editing? Would this be a good choice or will a GTX 6xx or GTX 580 be a much better option? My budget for the whole system (without monitor etc.) is max. 1000 euro.
- Would buying an SSD for storing the program files and the project files, be helpful? Or won't this increase the speed in editing by too much?

The GPU acceleration for Premiere is completely different than the Ray tracer acceleration in AE. The GPU specifications along with the system ram and CPU cores/clock absolutely effect the performance of the playback in Premiere. Which means selecting the correct GPU is based on Premiere's MPE acceleration and the workflow/media used. The concept that comes into play here is processing latency. A older card with 1GB of vram and a single or dual core CPU may be able to playback a single 1080 stream by itself without any scaling. However as soon as any effects or frame alterations are added then the time it takes for the data to process at the cpu, buffer into ram, and then process through the GPU is to long to maintain the playback. The clock speed of CPU, Ram, and GPU/Vram all come into play as to how long it takes for this entire pipeline to process. The amount of threads and cores decide how much data can process at any point in time. The more layers and effects to process along with frame changes, the more data that has to be processed in any time segment required for playback. This is similar to how much water needs to go through a pipe. This can be increased by either increasing the size of the pipe or the Water pressure in the pipe by how fast the water is fed into the pipe. Both aspects have their limitations based on where the water is coming from and going to and what the conditions required are. A balance is normally required between both the size of the pipe and the amount of water/pressure sent into the pipe. However the greater the volume of water required at any time segment the greater both aspects must be increased. IE this translates over into clock speed equals water pressure and threads equal size. SSD's also have a significant aspect on processing latency. The latency of SSD drives is a fraction of mechanical drives. This means the amount of time it takes for SSD drives to handle all of the read or write requests made by the application is significantly lower. This translates into lowering the amount of time drive requests effect the overall performance of the realtime playback along with how fast files are written. Since codecs have different data rate requirements often times SSD drives are cheaper options to handle data rates that normally require significant raid setups that are expensive. SSD drives also handle far more requests simultaneously which translates to putting more operations on a single disc. This often translates into better performance with more complex timelines or compositions.
The comments regarding GPU specifications not really having any impact are relating to AE only. This is absolutely not the case for Premiere, AME, and Speedgrade or almost any other GPU acceleration application.

Suitable laptop for video editing

for months now I am looking for a suitable laptop for video editing of my footage captured by Canon 60D (and also GoPro). Since it is in a HD quality and h.264 format it puts a great strain on the CPU. I already had to return an ASUS U30J and Dell XPS14 both with i7 processors because of their terribly slow performance :(. So now, I really want to be 100% sure that the laptop will be able to smoothly handle my footage. I am using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 for video editing and I do need a laptop (preferably 15'') as I travel all the time.

I would like to ask you what do you think about this configuration regarding my requirements? Will this system be powerful enough to handle the h.264 footage? I would like to use both the SLR camera and the laptop as long as possible and don't have to change the laptop in one year time or so. That's why I would like the system to be powerful enough to withstand even future demands of the software, etc.
I was also not sure about the 500GB (w/ 4GB SSD Memory) Seagate XT 7200RPM NCQ Hybrid 32MB Cache (Serial-ATA II 3GB/s. Do you think it is a smart choice? Is the 4GB SSD memory of any use? Or should I rather go with the 750GB 7200RPM 16MB Cache Buffer (Serial-ATA II 3GB/s)?
I don't have any previous experience with the raid system, do you think that the Raid 0 Stripe Enabled (Requires 2 or 3 Hard Drives. Combines Hard Drives for performance) is the right choice for smooth video editing? I know that I have to use at least 2 hard drives so that's why I'd rather order 3 HDD to get the best performance..
This configuration is worth 1800USD, I would obviously like to save some money as I will need to pay also the shipping costs, tax and duty (I currently live in New Delhi)... So if you think that something from the system might be downgraded and I would still get good video editing results, please let me know.

Frederick, I will firstly answer your questions, I am in no way a pro video editor, my projects are up to 10MB of size although I wasn't yet able to edit the h.264 footage properly ... I mostly do events and quite simple projects, effects, two to three timelines... I use only h.264, my older projects are in DV quality thought. I usually have to rush to finish a project since I have limited time during the travels.. I usually work at one, maximum two projects at the same time
Now, I have been trying to figure out what would be the best configuration for me and ended up with these two options, which are touching (maybe even overflowing) my budget... Both are worth around USD2100 (without shipping, etc.). Either I will be going for one SSD disk for the OS or for maximum CPU and RAM. Which configuration would you recommend me? Do you think that the second configuration is an overkill when taken into account the size and scope of my projects?

Frederick, regarding the RAM I checked the 8GB option and it comes in 2GBx4 so I won't be able to save those slots. Plus I have been searching for prices of the RAM, HDD and SSD in the US and they don't seem to be that great for me to even consider them... I would simply have to pay more and would end up with unused parts from the basic configuration. I think that the Xoticpc have quite reasonable prices of the upgrades they offer... Plus I can count on higher prices of the components here in India so all in all I think that it would cost me too much energy and save me minimum bucks... That's why I thought I might go for the 16GB RAM straight away if it isn't an overkill for me. As I said before, I would love to save money (after all I am a woman who controls the common budget) so please let me know, if I am just wasting money for high end technology which I won't be able to use . I rather think that in the future once I will finally be able to make some money when I will have a machine to work on, I might upgrade to better hard drives (SSD possibly). But right now I need a laptop on which I would be able to smoothly edit the HD h.264 footage.

a 980x stock will outperform a dual Xeon up to 2.8GHZ.
after that the dual xeons start to win. (2.93 and up)
it also depends on layer count, effects count and codec and color bit depth. the nastier the project the more the Xeons will do better.
where a standard AVCHD with 3-5 layers would be better on the 980x (price point per performance)
note i have not talked about OCing at this point.
assuming OCing both platforms, 2 xeons @ 4GHz are better than 1 980x @ 4ghz..
the question is do you need that kind of horsepower. most do not. and its not cheap.
lastly the system needs to be balanced. it would be foolish to have say a dual xeon @ 4ghz, 12 gig ram and only 3 hdds.
vs a 980x @4ghz 24gig ram and an 8 drive raid.

Does email interfere with a FCP editing system?

Old school system setup prohibited email or even internet on a video edit system partition. For example, my Avid DS system specified NO external connections, no internet, no email, no local network, nothing. Avid didn't even want a Jazz drive connected.
Is this still the practice on Final Cut Pro systems? I have always had email and net on my FCP partition, but I can't say it has ever been totally stable.
What is common practice now? Does anyone have trouble from this stuff today

Nope...works fine.
I can e-mail, surf the web and use iChat on my editing system.
I don't, as I have a laptop that I use for this, but when I was without one for a week, I did that all the time.
No problems. Avid used to have probelms, and had to be set up VERY SPECIFICALLY. And Avid DS was the worse. Now you can use e-mail with Avids, the later models.
And it has never been a problem with FCP.

MacPro for Video Editing

In configuring my MacPro to be a Video Editing system, what aspects of hardware should I focus on "expanding"? What hardware should I leave default, and what aspects should I be pouring my money into to make for an efficient Video Editing machine (using Final Cut Studio)?

For video editing you should…
1) Maximise your graphics performance by at least upgrading to the ATI X1900XT.
2) Maximise your hard disk aize and performance with additional drives. You can cloose make and model if you go 3rd party and it'll be cheaper than buy Apple 500GB drives. Some, including myself, have actually chosen to downgrade their internal drives knowing it will be replaced with a 3rd party drive.
3) Upgrade your RAM to at a minimum 4GB. Again it is cheaper by going 3rd party although with the current constriction on supply with the 3rd parties and the different requirements of the Mac Pro to standard FB-DIMM memory it may be simpler at the moment to just buy Apple RAM even though you do pay a premium.

This seems to have fixed the issue: on your desktop, hold down the [OPT] key and click on "Go" in the menu bar; holding down the [OPT] click on Library, find Preferences, and then delete all the files that start with "com.apple.itunes.XXXX.plist" where the "XXX" is whatever other things may exist - as long as they end in "plist". From my experience, preference files are rebuilt by the system after the next restart, so you have very little worry of losing any important data; the worst that could happen )and NOT in this instance, but for other plist files) is that you may have to reset the application "preferences" again when you next start it up, to act or appear in a "preferred" customized way for you.
Once you delete the .plist files, empty the Trash, and either log out or restart the computer. Once you're back up and operational, start iTunes and your iDevices should reappear in the sidebar (if that's open) and/or at the top of the screen (if that view is enabled).
Hope that helps. It definitely fixed my problem!
