Advice on buying first imac?

Hello all,
I would like a little help with the following?
I am looking at trading up from my old 10" netbook running windows xp, 143GB of hard drive of which I have only used 26GB, 1.60Ghz, 2GB of RAM, I upgraded that myself from one to two. I also have a 500GB back up external hard drive.
I want some advise on when to buy (is the not so far away upgrade going to affect me?)and what model I should be looking at.
Money is not to much of an issue neither is desk size.
I dont want a model that is more powerfull than I need, I do the following on my current pc:
Lots of web surfing
Lots eBay and Amazon buying
Lots of emailing
Little bit on excel and word
Adding and sorting family photos
itunes, twitter and facebook etc
I do not need it for work, this is for home use only.
Also is there an easy way to get all my emails off my old pc to the imac.
I know how to get all my files and music of the pc to the mac with my back up drive.
I also want to transfer all my contact from microsoft outlook 2007?
I have an iphone 3gs with the same contacts on if that is of any help?
Any other advice would be more than welcome, I understand it is going to be a bit of a learning curve going from pc to imac..... bring it on hey
Thanks in advance guys
Ade.

+...But I would seriously think about buying an imac again...+
(Re-printed from a previous post)
Of the 21 or so Apple products I have bought since 1999, only one failed. My 17" iMac G4/700 (2002) was the only casualty with a bad motherboard and graphics card. My wife still uses her G3/600 iBook from 2002. Our original iMac G3/333 from 1999 still works although we do not use it much. My original 10GB scroll wheel iPod (2002) I use daily. I only have replaced the battery twice. I have three other iPods and two iPhones. We have two 17" MacBook Pros which are very good. My first generation iPhone was sold with no issues during ownership. None of the Apple products required warranty issues. None have had software update problems. I ordered my new i7 iMac built for the next eight years. My recent additions are an iPad and MacBook Air. I hope this gives you some encouragement in your choice.

  • Advice on buying New iMac vs older Technology

    Hi, just want some advice.
I am in the market for a 27 inch iMac.  I have 2 requirements really:
I must be able to use the iMac as a display for a docked laptop (non apple).  This is my work laptop.
    I want the newest tech.
I understand with Thunderbolt that only 2009/2010 models will couple up well using displayport (and i have tested this with a mates 2010 iMac).
But i also love the new iMac thats due out soon.
Is there any way I can purchase a new iMac with thunderbolt and use this with laptop.  What i dont want to do is get a 2010 model and then find out that there is some convertor/adaptor/lead thats ideal for my solution meaning i could have bought the new iMac.
It might sound odd that i want a older model but using the iMac as a display for my work is a big want from me as i am using this a lot.
If there is definatley NOT a solution to the new iMacs, then i can stop drooling and look for a bargain on the 2010 models.
    Thanks in advance
    Barry

Any reason why 2011 or older?
2011 models are thunderbolt which wont accept a displayport input video from my non-apple PC.  Only 2009/2010 models do this (as they were pre-thunderbolt).
They were rumoured to be delayed but then i have seen confirmations that they are not going to be late so theres some confusion there.  But my main query is 'is there anyway i can use newer iMacs - with thunderbolt on my non-apple PC (as in using the imac as a monitor).
I have read a few posts saying its not compatible but was wanting advice/confirmation i guess that theres no convertor or box that would be a solution as i would prefer the new kit.
    Thanks

  • Advice on buying iMac

    Hi there,
Almost a year ago I purchased my first Apple computer, a 1.83ghz MacBook 13". At the time it was purely a personal purchase because although I needed to use Windows for work, I didnt see why I should have to put up with it any longer on my home computer.
Needless to say, I am still constantly impressed with everything about the MacBook, so much so that I have now made the complete switch to Mac. The two things keeping me on a PC for work were 3DS Max, and AutoCAD. I have now learned (well, learning) Cinema 4D, and VectorWorks, and purchased all the other apps I use (After Effects, Illustrator, Photoshop, Flash) for Mac.
At the moment, I am using my personal MacBook as my work comptuter as a stand-in and I now want to purchase a Mac desktop. As you can imagine, I dont have much fun working in Cinema 4D on a 13" screen.
I want some advice on which desktop to go for.
My first choice was immediately the Mac Pro, but having looked into the overall cost, and what you get for the money, I am now not sure whether to go for the 24" iMac.
The specs I am comparing, (any better spec you could recommend would be great, for a budget of around £2000) are:
    Mac Pro: 2x 2.0 Ghz, 1GB RAM, 256MB Graphics, 160GB Hard drive, 23" Cinema Display + Bluetooth + Airport = £2,268
    or
    iMac 24": 2.33 Ghz, 2GB RAM, 256MB Graphics, 250GB Hard drive = £1719
I am just not sure which would be the better option. The iMac comes with all the things Im having to pay a lot extra for with the Mac Pro, and I would have to downgrade to 1GB RAM due to cost.
Would 2x2.0 Processors, with 1GB RAM, be [that much] faster than 1x2.33 processor and 2GB RAM. I know the processor and RAM is different in the Mac Pro.
The key thing Im looking for is fast rendering in C4D, and good ability to run multiple pro apps, which the MacBook already handles well.
I know there is almost endless config and upgrade potential with the Mac Pro, but I want to know if I should really spend all that extra money.
In terms of future upgrades, I could almost buy an iMac now, and another one in 3 years time for a similar price to having the ideal spec Mac Pro to last me 4-5 years.
I know this thread has probably been posted elsewhere, and I have read a bunch of the 24" iMac vs Mac Pro reviews, but they still leave me somewhat undecided as it seems to be a pretty fair split on who thinks which is better (Im guessing iMac users say iMac, Mac Pro users say Mac Pro).
So in your opinion, which would be the better option?
Sorry this is such a long post, I could have probably just said '24" iMac vs Mac Pro base spec' and that would have been enough, but I thought Id tailor the question to my personal guidelines.
Any help / advice is appreciated.
    Thanks
    Macbook 13"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi
i think you' definitely need to upgrade the ram in the mac pro to 2-4gbs for good performance.
I've just bought a 20" imac with 2gb ram and it flies with logic and even with photoshop cs which isn't universal binary yet. yes, the imac comes with a screen and the mac pro doesn't....
also will you be wanting to expand at all (extra ram and diskspace for example)? in that case the mac pro is a good idea.
If you have the cash then a macbook pro and an extra screen would be a great idea - having a portable does change the way you can approach computing work - and i still love my 4 yr old powerbook for that reason!
I don't know where the nearest apple store is to warwickshire (Birmingham...excuse my geography)I'd recommend going there and trying them both out - there might be an apple retailer nearer than a store and then you can give both the imac and mac pro test run.
Needless to say the macpro will be better for 3d rendering as long as you feed it enough ram (upto 4gb should do).
Do bear in mind also that there might be a revision of some of the mac line ups in april or so, and definitely by june when the santa rosa chip comes out and should allow the imac and macbookpro's to address more than 3gb of ram. There is also talk of an 8-core mac pro. Of course anyone that does know when these things are gonna be released can't say and the big question is would you need this extra technology?
Still, waiting for a little while (unless you need the computer now - in which case buy it now) will get you a free copy of leopard!
    Hope some of this helps.
p.s. i was torn between waiting and buying now and eventually gave in to buying an imac now and a macbookpro later in the year. So far I'm very happy with the decision.

Kind regards Simon Trott Apple user and proud of it

We're not allowed to speculate on future or rumoured Apple products, but we all know there'll always be newer tech coming along.
The iMac you have is an excellent machine, be happy with it and get a good few years use out of it. By the time your machine is slowing down, whatever comes next will have been updated numerous times.
    I had the 2011 i5 27" delivered about 3 weeks ago. It's a cracking machine

  • I'm going to be buying an iMac and need advice

HI Everyone, I'm going to be buying an iMac. I'm trying to figure out the specs and such that I want.
    Background:
I've had a MacPro 1,1 for 8 years and it was more than enough for my needs. I liked having several different hard drives to back-up data but found that 1 tb seemed to be the most I would use (ended up backing-up data onto the other drives). Unfortunately it died and now I'm shopping for a new mac.
What I'll be using my mac for:
    1) Managing content (iTunes data)
    2) Photos
    3) Programming (working with Xcode)
    4) Photoshop
    5) Photoshop Lightroom
    6) Illustrator
    7) Microsoft apps
    8) Diablo
    9) Starcraft
    10) WoW (very rarely because of time constraints)
So I pretty much figure I want an 1 TB Fusion drive. And I want 8 - 16 gb of RAM. What processor should I get and video card. There might be some point that I'm playing games so I'm curious if I should shoot for an i7 processor or just an i5. As well, a 1 gb video card, intel HD, or 2gb card. I think with the video card and and processor it is a matter of longevity rather than performance at this moment (since non of the games I'll ever play are processor intensive). Any thoughts on this are greatly appreciated. I'm buying in Dec and am going to see what comes out in Oct. I definitely need a new computer. Been running an 128 gb hard drive Macbook Air all summer and going to pull my hair out if I can't get access to all my data soon.

for a case, if you are planning for rough treatment, dust, water...
    Look at the Pelican line.
    http://www.pelican-case.com/1095.html
This is ne of many they offer, this is brand most TV crews use. You can call them they have a ton of cases to offer, it depends on how it is going to used.
Something like this for power, this is a grey area to recommend as it depends on what the voltage supply is doig, the heavier duty, the more $$$
The solar charger you will have to do some research, I could,nt find anything that looked promising.
    Have a safe trip

  • Need advice about buying iMac

    Hello,
I am buying a used iMac G5 from private party.
Do not have much money. Going to look at it. He does not
have restoration discs, but is including Leopard
disc. Seems like a good computer for 400.00
just wondering if I need restoration discs...what to look for.
Am a college student and need one for school.
Any help would be great. I am familiar with
    Apple.  Thank you

I wouldn't put your money into a PowerPC at this point.  You can buy a refurbished Intel-based iMac, with standard 1 year Apple warranty, for $929 in the Apple store:  http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC508LL/A or if you want a lower priced mac, a mac mini starts at $579 with the education discount.  If you're limit is $400, at least buy an Intel-based mac, as that will serve you better for the next few years.
Unfortunately, PowerPC's have been left behind. Some programs like Flash no longer support PowerPCs, and some web sites require a current level of Flash to work (some ESPN programming comes to mind).  I've also found that some online content requires Intel processors.
If you decide to buy the iMac G5 without the original distribution disks, you may want to call Apple to see if you can buy a set (they were about $60, however, Apple may no longer have them in stock) or plan to, at some point, buy TechTool Pro, which can do similar hardware testing as the Apple Hardware Test which is on the original distribution disks.  You might be able to find a set on ebay, but make sure they are the gray-faced OS X disks for your model iMac G5. Those disks only work on the systems they are delivered with.
Personally, I wouldn't buy a used mac unless it came with a clean hardware report via the Apple Hardware extended test or via one of the TechTool products (Deluxe or Pro).

  • In Hongkong. I want to buy new iMac, But need to sell old one first. Where is good for sell??

    Please help me.
    Please give me a suggestion.
I want to buy new iMac, but need to sell old one.
    About following the info.
How much can sell and where is good for sell?
Processor  2.93 GHz Intel Core i7
    Total Number of Cores:          4
    Processor Interconnect Speed: 4.8 GT/s
    Memory  8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 5750 1024 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.3 (12D78)
    1TB harddisk
    Warranty to 02/Aug/2013
    Thank you for your help.

When you sell your iMac, please remember that if you bought Mountain Lion upgrade at the app store, the license is not transferable and you need to erase the drive and reinstall the original system (which was most likely Snow Leopard?). If you don't do that, the buyer can never reinstall Mountain Lion because the license is tied to your Apple ID forever.

  • Need advice, what to add to my MBA ... a 24" ACD or buy new iMac?

I have the MacBook Air 1.8 / 128 SSD and now have the 24" ACD monitor it's a nice set up, but I can't help but think of another possible option that I may like more ...
I'm considering returning the ACD and exchanging it for the 24" iMac and I'd use the iMac along with my MBA.
I like typing on my MBA and using the trackpad, being able to move it around the office, house or desk in a second and not being tethered to the monitor is nice, I know its only two plugs but ...
Having an iMac to use along with the MBA has many benefits, the obvious is it's a separate computer, lol, ... but you can leave the MBA on it's own at all times, use them together, lots of extra storage space, also to run windows on via boot camp on the iMac etc ....
It's about $900 more, for many many more benefits. I love the 24" ACD monitor but can't help thinking of the added benefits of the iMac for not a whole lot more money mine be worth it and sort of complete my system, best of both worlds...
    What would you do?

Would you buy to go with the MBA?
So far I bought the 24" ACD, I really like it.
Still I'm considering exchanging the ACD and getting the new 24" iMac. Reason being in a way I'd like to keep my Air separate and not attached to an external display, I really like typing on the Air, its Touchpad and the screen is great. True, when I hook up to the 24" ACD it's beatiful and the Apple BT keyboard is alright, but for whatever reason part of me wants to get the iMac and use the Air along side of it ...
Or, I could go all out and keep the ACD to use with my Air when I like PLUS buy the iMac. In that case I'd sell my HP desktop and 24" HP monitor I have. BUT if I did that I'd loose a benefit I'm getting from the HP desktop which is HDMI ports. This is one thing that's more of a challenge with the mac because I also hook up to a 37" Panasonic Vierra for movie watching. So my HP desktop has the 24" monitor and my 37" TV attached to it.
A lot of computers, eh? They're all used hard for our business and entertainment as well. I was cruising along fine with an x301 ... then I had to try the MBA and I'm hooked, I love that that computer! So, now with the addition of the 24" ACD I'm thinking of the iMac as well. The HP has it's quirks, non working USB ports, had to reinstall the OS a few times, so I won't mind getting rid of it. But how to hook up the iMac to the Panasonic, it has no DVI port.
From a minimalist viewpoint I could probably get by with just my Air as my main machine, and use an external hard drive for extra storage / back up. Then when I required the use of a large monitor or to run Windows App's I could use the HP desktop. In one way this 'could' be the least aggravating too, my TV already hooks up easily via HDMI, the HP monitor on the desktop is good, then just use the Air when I'm away from my desk. (Plus I have to get my wife a new pc regardless of what I do, realistically a 13" MB will suilt her, it's small/light but has the power and peripherals she needs.
From a 'maximalist' view I could keep the ACD for my Air, add the iMac as my desktop, sell the HP or give to my wife to use at her desk and get her the MBA ! PLUS replace my Linksys dual band $200 router with Time Capsule and the whole system would be complete. I'd install windows on the iMac ... is all that worth the cost and effort ... I don't know.
It's not a matter of cost, we're a low overhead busy company and I haven't redone our computer set up for some time now ...

  • Should I buy a iMac or Mac Pro

    Hi all
I am looking to buy a new Mac.
My main purpose will be for developing apps both for Mac ios and running Parallels Desktop to use windows.
I first thought to buy the Mac Pro as it everything I am looking for. If I buy a Mac Pro then I would also have to buy the 27' Thunderbolt Display. When I did my research on the Thunderbolt display I almost got a heart attack when I saw the price.
So then I went and checked the iMac to see it specs and was let down when I saw it only has an i5. Though the price would be much lighter on my pocket.
So now I am torn between buying the iMac or the Mac Pro.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Sincerely
    The one who can't choose

No, that's not correct. There is absolutely no reason you have to buy the Thunderbolt Display if you buy a Mac Pro. You can choose from many monitors.
The Mac Pro connects to monitors through any of its Thunderbolt ports. But you must realize that on a Mac, every Thunderbolt port is the same as the Mini DisplayPort industry standard video connection. You can therefore buy any DisplayPort monitor on the market and plug it in.
For example, I bought a nice NEC monitor and I can plug it into the Thunderbolt port on my Mac Pro or MacBook Pro, using a $5 Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable.
But there are other questions about your post. lllaass has a good question: How do you plan to use your Mac? Because a Mac Pro is too much computer for most users. It's for high end users. You said you had a heart attack at the price of the Apple Thunderbolt Display. But the Thunderbolt Display is only a mid-range price for a professional monitor. Many professional monitors cost between $1000-2000. If you are having a heart attack over the Thunderbolt display price, why aren't you having one over the Mac Pro price?
Following that, if you are worried about the i5 in an iMac, why not just customize the iMac order to get an i7 instead? It's an option for all iMacs except the cheapest one, and it would be much less expensive than a Mac Pro plus any good monitor.

  • Hello.  I just bought my first Imac.  Each family member has created an account.  My question is: can each account/family member create their own imesssages, so that each family member can imessage privately?

Hello.  I just bought my first Imac.  Each family member has created an account.  My question is: can each person use imessages privately when logged into their account?  instead of everyone seeing everyones imessages?  is there a way to do this?

I believe the short answer tot that is "yes" however I recommend you contact AppleCare to find out You have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support when you buy any new Mac. This is the ideal time to begin using it. I'd also recommend that you purchase AppleCare, it will extend your 1 year warranty to 3 years and offer you 3 years of telephone support in addition to other services. You can locate the correct phone number in your part of the planet (Calgary, Canada??) by clicking Contact Apple for support and service

  • Should I buy an iMac?

I own a MacBook Pro 13" Mid 2012, and I'm studying to become a Meda Designer (websites, commercials). I was wondering, is it worth the money to buy an iMac as an extra computer at home? Or should I keep the money nicely in my pocket?

I just bought the 27" iMac and love it. It is my first MAC.  There is some discussion about image retention. I have a bit of it if I have app windows up for long. But it goes away.  I can see it on the dark grey background only such as in Lightroom. But once I load a photo, the IR disappears as a new background comes up.  Not sure if this will get worse or not. I use 10 minute sleep mode to try and avoid it if not working on the iMac.
You will love it though. I love the real estate on the screen.

  • Want to buy new IMac  but which one?

    Hi guys,
Firstly I want to say that I do not own a Mac yet but am looking to buy one, I have very limited experience with them and am not sure where to start I also only use computers for general stuff like internet browsing watching a movie or 2 and sometimes editing videos, I don't play any games either. I am also not really up with the ins and outs of computers so bear with me.
I'm looking at getting an IMac 2.66 or 2.8GHz but I have a few questions.
Would you suggest that I buy the 2.66 as it looks like the same unit except for the processor speed and save some money for some more memory? Just on that I would probably buy the memory seperate and not get it upgraded when buying the IMac right? Because of the cost I could get it much cheaper elsewhere yes?!
A question about internet & Broadband use, I live in Darwin Australia and am using Bigpond Broadband ADSL 20000/512kbps I am not sure what I need to do to hook up an IMac, do I just use a ethernet cable as per PC do I need any other hardware for either model 2.66 or 2.8GHz?
I guess that's it for now, I hope you can help me, I'm sure you can.
Anything else you can tell me will be helpful as I'm keen to get one and get started.
    Thanks

    Hi BB4L -
I'm from the UK so not sure if I can help re the broadband question but I'll try my best. I use the 20inch 2.66GHz iMac at work and whilst the screen isn't amazing, it's a great, fast machine and would suit your needs perfectly.
You're right, you'd notice hardly any benefit between the 2.66 and 2.8 machines. They have the same HD, RAM and graphics card. You'd be better off spending the extra cash on maxing out your RAM to 4GB - this will give you a more significant speed increase. And don't use Apple to upgrade your RAM, buy it from somewhere cheaper and install it yourself - it's extremely simple. The instructions are [here|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1760]. A good choice of RAM is [here|http://www.crucial.com> although I'm not sure whether there's an Australian outlet. I just found [this|http://www.buymac.com.au/store/computer-addons/mac-memory-upgrades/imac/i mac-intel-core2duo-penryn] site but obviously have never used them so couldn't say if they're good or not.
In terms of broadband, if you already have a modem/router box which came with your broadband then you can hook it up with an ethernet cable or connect wirelessly if the box is a wireless modem/router.
    Hope this helps.

  • Planning to buy a iMac

I actually am planning to buy an iMac. But I do not know if I should buy one because I already have a Macbook Pro. But I want a desktop computer as well.
I do not know if I should buy one now or wait when they release a new one on October...or buy a Windows Vista.
Pls. help me make a decision.
    Thanks

"I do not know if I should buy one now or wait"
Wait. We don't know if there'll be a new model release next week, next month, or next quarter. Considering that you purchased your MBP not long before there was a model update for that line, why don't you wait for a new model iMac this time and "get even." You could then get one loaded with all the latest features so that it has the capability to do anything and everything that you can imagine? If you get the new model while it's still hot, it'll be quite awhile before you need to worry about being "behind the curve." Then, YOU can give all of US some advice, and we'll probably need it;)

  • How can I buy an iMac?

    Hey,
I know this might seem like a very basic question, but it's sometimes the easiest questions that take the longest to answer, so let me give you some back story to my problem. Currently, I'm using the (Terrible) Lenovo Thinkpad T410, but I need to upgrade, and thought the 21.5" 2.9GHz iMac would be the perfect investment. I'm currently in College learning about various forms of digital design and marketing, and need a computer with an amazing screen. Since I don't have enough money for the Retina Macbook Pro, The new iMac is the best alternative in my books. So, I've been saving up my money and have just arrived at the amount of money I need (1,800$ taxes included), and I want to go buy it. I don't have a credit card, so I need to pay in cash. Anyways, I went to my local Apple store (Carrefour Laval) today, and they said they didn't have any in stock. Great. They said it could take up to 5 days for them to a recieve a shipment, but they can't say for sure. Amazing. Later on, I called them to see if they could give me a date where I could come in and pick one up (as in a guarunteed purchase), but they said they couldn't help me, and I should just call in advance. Beautiful. So, I did some Googling and found out that you can reserve products through the Apple store application. I downloaded it and found out that yes, you can reserve most products, BUT not the iMac. Wonderful. I went onto the Apple Online Store website where they have a chat box to see if that "person" can help me at all. The "person" said she understood why I was angry and just redirected me to the Apple Online Store. Genius. So, here I am, money-in-hand, but no way to buy the iMac. What should I do? I also went to various other electronic dealers in my area and they were also out of stock. Yay. Is there some way I can find out when they'll have it in stock without calling them every day, hoping for a yes?
TLDR: I want to buy a 21.5" 2.9GHz New iMac, but don't have a credit card (Can't buy online). I want to pay with cash, but my local store never has it in stock. Any tips on how I can get one without having to call them everyday?
    Thanks,
    Ben

The new iMacs are still in short supply, and Apple are quoting 3-4 weeks for delivery.
So you will need to call carrefour every day!

I am planning to buy an iMac 21.5 inch with Fusion drive and 16 GB RAM while i visit USA for a conference.
