Advice on choosing a new mac pro model

Hi. I'm looking to buy a new Mac Pro for use mainly with AE, Premiere, Photoshop plus Element 3d and trapcode. Should I spend most $$ on the CPU or the GPU? For just under $6.5K I can get the 3.7 quad+dualD700's or the 3.5 6core +dual D500's (Plus 32 GB of Ram). Any advice would be appreciated. BTW, I'm looking to do hi rez 4K renders in Element 3d (I know this uses GPU but am unsure as to whether I can get away with the lower spec'd GPU's. Does anyone use this with lots of vram for hi rez renders and how much vram seems adequate? Thanks!

You're not saying which model of MacPro you are considering, but if you go with the Quad, you will NOT be able to run all 11GBs of ram. You have 4 slots, and slots 3 & 4 are shared. So you can put the 2x4 for the 8, but then you will only be able to run the 2x1 for another 2, giving you a total of 10GBs.

    My boss wants faster previews, faster render times and an all round better performance than what we have now, and with the possibility of outputting 4K in the near future i have to bear that in mind as well.
    If you guys could give me a helping hand choosing a new mac pro i would be eternally grateful!

    The new Mac Pros are, without a doubt, amazing machines. But are they value for money?
    A significant cost in these machines is the high end AMD GPUs, which is utilised very well by Apple in their own software like Final Cut Pro X, Compressor and Motion.  If you use those a lot, it's a no brainer. Place your order.
    Premiere Pro CC has  support for the GPUs (one GPU during playback, but can utilise both during renders.)
    There has been no pledge from Adobe for After Effects support. AE's ray-traced 3D render engine has been virtually abandoned by Adobe, so there will never be support for AMD CPUs for it. They are now more focussed on integration with Maxxon's Cinema 4D as a 3D alternative, but Cinema 4D exclusively renders with the CPU – no GPU benefit.
    The AE team are hinting about substantial multi-processing enhancements in the next major update, so it seems After Effects users will continue to be better off with faster multi-core CPUs, rather than expensive GPUs. With more CPU cores comes the need for more RAM.
    Some third party vendors of AE plugins, like VideoCopilot's Element 3D and Optical Flares, have pledged support for the Mac Pro GPUs. But the problem with intertwining CPU-dependent software with GPU-dependent plugins is you need to turn off multi-processing to get the best results, negating the value of your powerful Mac Pro CPU.
    Photoshop and Indesign rarely need the balls of a machine like the new Mac Pro. The new high-speed SSDs will certainly make them run faster than your average iMac, but it's not a HUGE leap for the cost difference.
    The benchmarks I've seen on media encoding for the new Mac Pros are a little underwhelming, to be honest. They're fast, yes, but not twice as fast as a $4000 iMac, despite a high-end machine being twice (or more) expensive.
    So, as a primarily Adobe user, I'm a bit torn. Personally, I think my money will be better spent buying a high-spec iMac for now. I can always on-sell it in 6 months if Adobe prove they are really coming to the party with Mac Pro support. But right now I'm not seeing proof of the benefits (from Adobe) in buying a $6K+ machine.
    If you are determined to buy the new Mac Pro, and After Effects and C4D are your primary tools, get the most powerful CPU you can afford, make sure you have at least 3-4GB of RAM for each CPU, and keep the lowest-specced GPUs.

  • New Mac Pro or 27" iMac

    I apologize in advance for the length but I need some help in making a decision.
    SITUATION:
    I run a small business and currently have a Late 2012 21.5" iMac and two 23" monitors (3 screens total for running multiple applications and copy/pasting). My day-to-day includes always having 4-8 browser tabs open running external sites that I input order information into, a huge multi-thousand line Excel Spreadsheet (2008 MS Office for Mac), Google Voice tab open for phone calls/texts, Skype always open to talk to my technical team, Calendar, Notifications, Mail, etc... I keep most all emails because I have to search and refer to previous emails for customer issues, etc... so I have more than 10,000 emails in Mail. I take screenshots and screenvideos for our Help library at times as well. All day long I'm pretty much copying and pasting information to and from my spreadsheet to these other applications to process orders and using most of these applications simultaneously. I'm also backing up all data via Time Machine and Dropbox. Due to the volume or orders I process each day, I need my computer to be FAST!!!!
    ISSUE:
    My 21.5" iMac only has 8GB of RAM and is not user upgradable. I've had this iMac less than a year and I'm seeing the "colorwheel of death a lot", usually when copying and pasting, but sometimes other places as well. I think I need a more robust computer for reasons listed below, plus my wife's 7 year old iMac is on it's last leg so I'm planning on giving the 21.5" iMac to her and upgrading for my business.
    Not that it happens all the time, but quite often an application will stop functioning and I have to Force Quit the application and reopen.
    Each time I copy data from a cell in Excel it takes at least 5 seconds for the dotted line to appear around the cell indicating it's copied, so I have to be very careful not to paste the wrong data. This did not used to be the case. It would respond as fast as I could copy then paste. Excel and Word also take a lot longer to open and close than other programs.
    When scrolling in various applications, sometimes the computer seems to stall then all of a sudden catch up and the page quickly scrolls to catch up.
    I've run the Activity Monitor (which I know little about) and seen that I'm running normally 6.5-8GB of Memory Used. On the "DISK" tab often times my "Reads In" is higher than my "Reads Out" which I don't know if that's normal or not.
    QUESTION:
    I would like to know what you guys recommend for my situation.
    Should I purchase a "beefed-up" 27" iMac with 16-32GB RAM or should I purchase one of the new Mac Pro models?
    If Mac Pro, should I go with the 12GB Quad-Core or the 16GB Six-Core? (I realize I would have to purchase another monitor and microphone for phone calls).
    I don't mind spending the money, but moreso I'm trying to get the right machine for my application without wasting money.

    If it weren't for the fact that software in 6 yrs will require newer hardware to meet the demands, your nMP will still be going strong. Other than Apple dropping support for whatever OS X in 5-6 yrs instead of 8-10 years it would still be able to run and do what it is designed for for years to come. Say that about an imac that can be outgrown or "why did OS X 11.99 make my system slow?"

  • New mac pro upgrade advice needed or keep the old clunker

    I have a 2008 mac pro with only 8gb ram
    I am use the  computer for FCP and Logic as well
    as photo editing.  It is not my livelihood I am just a serious hobbiest.
    My option is to go with a new Mac Pro probably 8 core with 1 TB
    I would have to get an enclosure for my 4  thunderbolt internal drives.
    I also have 2 firewire 800 2T external drives.
    My monitor is a 30 inch cinema display
    so an 8 core with 64gb plus 4k monitor and upped graphics card is $11,600 add my buisness discount i am probably
    looking at around $11,000
    My other option is to keep the clunker add a 1TB SSD PCIe card form owc and add 8gb ram this will
    cost me $1,400. I am really only throwing away the $200 for increasing the ram as
    the PCIe ssd drive can be salveged and used in the new mac pro if I bought an pcie/ thunderbolt  enclosure.
    Tha advantage of going this route is I could use the clunker for another year allowing time
    for the kinks in the new mac pro to be ironed out as well as the advantage of faster chips in next years model.
    The other issue I have is a use a Universal Audio PCI card with 4 sharc processors to run specific plugins that need that
    card in logic.  That card will no be compatible with the new Mac pro and the replacement cards are over $1000 that are compatibe
    Just looking for some advice do you think the SSD PCI card and ram will keep me happy with the performance to hold off upgrading for
    a year or shoul I just put the clumker out of its misery?

    On this page Apple compares the 2012 Mac Pro (12-core) to a 2013 Mac Pro (12-core). The new Mac Pro performs about 3x faster at rendering. You didn't say how many cores your Mac Pro has but you could expect about a 4-5x faster performance increase.
    I would have some questions for you:
    How much time do you spend waiting on your current Mac Pro?
    How much money are you willing to spend for a 4-5x increase?
    I have a 2010 Mac Pro with a 960 GB OWC Mercury Accelsior E2 PCIe SSD, program launches and computer restarts are much faster. Compressing video takes the same amount of time as it did when I booted from a hard drive. I can't read or type email any faster, iTunes plays music just as fast as it always has with a hard drive.
    I would use Activity Monitor to monitor your computer's memory use while you work with FCP and Logic to see if you are maxing out your memory then adding more may be the way to go.
    I use my Mac Pro for recording over-the-air TV and compressing that video into an Apple TV usable format. I've found that having a dedicated drive for capture works well. Also, when I compress the video my capture drive becomes a dedicated source drive for Compressor and I write the output file to a separate dedicated drive. This ensures I maximize data flow and keep all my cores nearly fully utilized. I tend to do the processor intensive tasks (compressing video which can take hours) at the end of the day when I know I won't be using the computer (or only doing light work on it such as email or web surfing).

    Has any one here have sound problems with the new Mac Pros (2010)??? I hear they
    still have sound "pops" or something like that as with the 2009 MP. I'm looking
    to buy a new MP since my G5 tower just died today (RIP) so need a new tower but need
    to know if this sound issue is still there. BTW any advice on what I should buy for my next tower
    would be welcomed too!!! I have a 2.5mhz LC G5 and I basically work with Photoshop, iMovie, Final
    cut Express and almost every thing else and games too. I herd that the single 6 core (3.33mhz) is
    a wise choice compared to a 12 core. Can I still use my 10.5 OSX (PPC) on the new Tower and then
    update it to 10.6? Will be getting 12gigs of ram from OWC, NOT paying $1000+ to get 12 gigs from
    Apple. Can I still use my 1.5GB/s(speed) hard drives? I know that the Mac Pros uses the 3Gb/s HD if
    so I could fill the Mac Pro with my 2 G5's HD.

  • About to purchase new Mac Pro - Need Advice

    I am about to purchase a new mac pro and have some questions
    I am planning to use final cut pro as well as Edius on Boot Camp.
    I intend to edit footage in HDV from a sony Z1 and also from the new sony - pmw -ex3 which i will be planning to edit in HD and 24p.
    1) the default config for the mac pro is dual 2.8.ghz processors, what advantage gain will i get i upgrade to 3.0 or 3.2, is the extra power worth the money? will this give me more real-time editing
    How many layers of HD 1920 x 1080 from the sony pmw-ex3, will i be able to edit in FCP 6.0 without any problems? would you advise more ram
    2) i prefer to work from RAID 5 drives and keep system drive separate, this is how i have worked on in PC/Windows environment. Can anyone confirm if i can have one JBOD drive for the system and 3 drives configured as a RAID 5 drive?
    Will i be able to use a boot to run windows and also be able to use the RAID 5 drive on windows side?
    3) Is anyone using the 3ware RAID 5 side car? what is experienece is this compatible on the windows partition from boot camp
    4) How will i be able to preview HD footage?
    5) Do i need to invest in a better Graphics

    Here are a few answers.
    1. The Mac Pro 2.8 GHz model performs so well that it is difficult to justify paying 28% more for 7% of additional processor power in the case of the Mac Pro 3.0 GHz or 56% more for 14% additional processor power with the Mac Pro 3.2 GHz model. You might see a small 5-10% increase in performance when compressing video with the 3.2GHz model but it certainly would not be worth paying 50% more to me. In addition, Amazon has the 2.8 on sale for $2599 after an easy rebate:

    2. If you want to use boot camp I would NOT recommend the Apple RAID card. Boot camp does not work with this card which leaves you wondering why you bought the card and how to get around this HUGE limitation. Instead, I would recommend the Areca ARC-1221x, HighPoint RR 3522 or the ARC-1680x if you want a SAS card. All of these cards have new firmware available that provide awesome performance and boot capability with the Mac Pro 2008. I would also get a SeriTek/2eEN4 4-bay and 1TB Samsung HDs. This gives a solid, quiet 4-bay enclosure that can support RAID 5 with any of the cards and you can add a second enclosure later if you want to use all eight external ports with RAID 6 (for added redundancy and increased volume size). This leaves the internal bays available for Boot Camp, Mac OS X, backups or mirrors and provides RAID 5/6 capability that can be configured to perform almost twice as fast as the Apple RAID card and provide double the redundancy with RAID 6.     3. The 3Ware RAID 5 card is not a top pick in the Macintosh market. The options outlined above will provide much better performance and RAID 6 capabilities.
    4. You can view the the HD footage on the monitor.
    5. You may want a better graphics card but I would try the stock card first. I was surprised how well the ATI radeon HD 2600 XT card performs with Apple applications.

    What model hard drives are they putting in the new Mac Pro's? I need to purchase a second drive in anticipation of a 2.8 I'm ordering and I want to get the same brand and model.

    Mine came with the Seagate ST3320820AS_P; however, WDs are also in the mix. And don't forget that the BTO options allow increasing drive size; those may be different makes as well.

    Anyone know the make/model of the 500GB drive shipping with new Mac Pros?
    Have a new compy on the way and would like to pick up a matching drive to set up a RAID 0 with. I know it's not strictly necessary to have the exact same drive, but what can I say, I like to be orderly like that.

    If you want matching drives for RAID, buy a pair of Seagate or WD RE2. They may be the same size, but the drive Apple ships, I would have gotten the OEM 320 and used it for the backup/emergency system drive (and put in FireWire/SATA case.
    RAID boot volumes? mirror? scratch? There are better ways to use four drive bays, and I would recommend a pair of 750GB RE2 or Seagate drives for their performance.

  • Advice for a RAID configuration in my new Mac Pro

    I just got a brand new Mac Pro and I am looking to get the fastest possible render and encode times possible. Originally I bought an eSATA PCIe card but was not impressed with the transfer times. In another forum a user suggested that I setup a RAID5. What kind of drives and RAID cards do you recommend as pro videographers? I suppose I can use my 1TB G-Drive as cold storage for the captured video. Any ideas?

    I need some help in choosing the right specs for my mac pro. I am looking for a computer that will help me in running my small business and keep my art portfolio organized. I'll probably be running several programs at a time (ex. mozilla, itunes, adobe bridge, dreamweaver, illustrator, and photoshop). More specifics below

    My advice would be to buy the standard configuration 2.66GHz Quad Core (i.e. 3 x 1GB RAM, 640GB hard drive) from the Apple store, with the exception of the graphics card which you can buy as a CTO option for $200.00. It is well worth the upgrade from the GT120 - I know, because I upgraded myself last November after using a GT120 for 4 months.
    With regard to the memory, if you can afford it now, buy 4 x 4GB from OWC now. If not, I would suggest that you buy 2 x 4GB now, and then add another 2 x 4GB in the future. 16GB of RAM is a much better option than 8GB for your requirements. You can sell the 3 x 1GB RAM to OWC in "part exchange", and there would be little difference in price for 2 x 4GB to the CTO option of 4 x 2GB.

    Instead of buying 2 x 1TB hard drives as a CTO option, you could purchase 2 x 1.5TB or 2 x 2TB HDDs for less money, and you would still have the 640GB. Spare drives are always useful. I use my original 640GB as a spare emergency system boot drive (OS and applications) in an external enclosure.
    Another alternative is to wait a few more weeks, in case the rumours of the introduction of a new Mac Pro range in June have any foundation.

    The defining factor, which you haven't mentioned in either this or your original question, is what your overall budget is.
    With the introduction of the new models, it's a new ball game now since I replied to your original question.
    Now, if it is within your budget, I would recommend the 2010 Mac Pro 3.33GHz 6-Core "Westmere", with the standard 1TB hard drive, the basic 3 x 1GB RAM, but with the CTO Radeon HD5870 1GB Graphics Card.

    If your budget is large enough, then certainly it is worth considering the 2.93Ghz 12-Core, but the 3.33GHz 6-Core, with maxed out memory and fast hard drives, should be more than adequate for your requirements. The more memory the better for Photoshop CS5!
    I have just ordered Photoshop CS5 myself. It is a big step-up from Elements 8, and I was going to wait until next year, by which time, hopefully, any initial problems and bugs should have been resolved.
    However, Adobe UK made me an offer I couldn't refuse! The full boxed Photoshop CS5 edition for half price!
    Also, the offer included an option to buy Lightroom3 at the same time with a 30% discount off its normal price, and so I have taken the plunge and ordered that as well, because I have never been completely happy with Aperture (II or III). Normally, I would not have purchased both Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 3, but at these prices the offer was too tempting.

  • New Mac Pro (late 2013) crashes / freezes while rendering or editing in Premiere Pro CC

    We recently purchased a new Mac Pro desktop (Late 2013, 16GB memory, D700 Graphic Card, 2.7 GHz -12 Core, OSX 10.9.3) and we are running Adobe CC on it. When using Premiere Pro CC (7.2.2) I am having major issues while rendering and editing. About 50% of the time when I try to render it starts off real fast then just freezes. This happens in Premiere and Media Encoder. Sometimes I can just Force Quit Premiere or Media Encoder and other times I have to do a hard restart on the entire computer because the entire computer freezes. The computer will also occasionally freeze whenever doing simple editing or stacking layers. The  computer will also just decide to suddenly stop and restart when editing or doing simple tasks like browsing the web. Additionally there has been several times if the render does finish, the final video will have digital glitches throughout the video. I have to redo the render once or twice and it will finally be fine. This all is happening several times a day. This never happened on our previous Mac Pro, but we were not running Mavericks. I used Migration Assistant to transfer from old computer to new computer. So I don't know if this is an a problem with the actual Mac Pro, Mavericks, graphic card or Adobe? But right now I am very frustrated as you can imaging spending all this money for a computer that has been giving us more issues than our previous computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
    There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
    ☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
    ☞ Paste into the window of another application.
    ☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
    ☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
    The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
    and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
    If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
    to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
    At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
    If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

  • About to buy a new Mac Pro

    A few months ago I posted a very simlar question, but can't find it anymore.
    I'm ready to purchase a new Mac Pro, now I have a 2008 8 Core 2.8GHz with 10 gig ram and was looking at the latest 8 core with a lesser speed of 2.4. GHz and cannot find a benchmark comparison of those two models. The closest I found was at Barefeat's site, where it show a chart with the difference of 6 seconds exporting 50 JPGs out of Aperture, 68 seconds on the new 8 core and 62 seconds on my 2008. My opinion is that the difference doesn't worth a $3,500 dollars purchase, unless there are numerous advantages I'm overlooking.
    Another idea was to double the ram on mine and get a new video card, planing to keep my 2008 as a server in case I buy a new one.
    Need advice and suggestions, making a decision this weekend before something else comes up and spend the money . As I said, purchasing a new one is not an issue, just want to make sure is worth it.

    This chart shows that to EQUAL what you have now, buy a 2.93GHz FOUR-Core 2009 or later.
    The real "sweet spot" in the current offerings is the six-core at only 1.5 times the entry models instead of 2x or 3x. (It's a build-to-order of the four-core.)
    In case of a tie, always choose more MegaHertz over more processors.

  • New Mac Pro (6 core, D700, 32GB), Mavericks 10.9.4, dragging and scrolling lag, overall system bugginess

    Since upgrading to 10.9.4 i've been beset with numerous bugs and general odd system behavior.
    Previous to this update I had experience lag when using my Wacom Intuos 4 tablet. For example when doing a preview render in Maya the tablet would become unresponsive and laggy. This never occurred on my old Mac Pro 2008.
    I noticed there was an update to the Wacom Drivers (6.3.8-2) so I did the update. After updating I've been experiencing dramatically slow screen redraw. So whenever I drag a window or scroll, the image stutters, flickers and lags as it tries to redraw to keep up with mouse position. This makes it impossible to use the computer.
    I uninstalled the Wacom drivers and the lag and redraw errors persist. I looked at Activity Monitor to if it was some other system resource like Spotlight that was momentarily hogging resources. The only thing I notice is that the dreaded "kernel_task" seems to be using a lot of ram (1.46 GB) and cpu time (usually at the top of the list). Also, "com.apple.IconServicesAgent" seems to be using a lot of CPU time (usually #2 in the list).
    I'm at a loss as to what to do about this other than re-install everything from scratch. I've read through numerous forum threads about the kernel_task issue but nothing seems to apply to the New Mac Pro.
    Hopefully someone has some experience with these issues and some good advice for fixes.

  • Buying a new mac pro, new things to consider?

    Below is the question I posted in may along with someone's response. I'm wondering if I should still go with the response I received considering the new release of the mac pro 12 core. Did anything change that I need to note in my purchase or is the below response suitable? THANKS!!!!!
    my question:
    I need some help in choosing the right specs for my mac pro. I am looking for a computer that will help me in running my small business and keep my art portfolio organized. I'll probably be running several programs at a time (ex. mozilla, itunes, adobe bridge, dreamweaver, illustrator, and photoshop). More specifics below
    What i'll be using it for:
    building a few websites
    managing my small business
    large photo file editing
    keeping business files, artist receipts, etc
    cataloging my art portfolio (large photo files)
    storing photos, music, and short videos
    graphic design
    infrequent film editing
    infrequent sound editing
    what programs i'll be using:
    CS5 (mostly photoshop, illustrator, bridge, dreamweaver)

    maybe minimal finalcut/soundtrack pro

    Advice?
    My concerns are that it needs to run pretty smoothly with multiple programs open, no overheating, plenty of space for file storage and application support.

    My advice would be to buy the standard configuration 2.66GHz Quad Core (i.e. 3 x 1GB RAM, 640GB hard drive) from the Apple store, with the exception of the graphics card which you can buy as a CTO option for $200.00. It is well worth the upgrade from the GT120 - I know, because I upgraded myself last November after using a GT120 for 4 months.
    With regard to the memory, if you can afford it now, buy 4 x 4GB from OWC now. If not, I would suggest that you buy 2 x 4GB now, and then add another 2 x 4GB in the future. 16GB of RAM is a much better option than 8GB for your requirements. You can sell the 3 x 1GB RAM to OWC in "part exchange", and there would be little difference in price for 2 x 4GB to the CTO option of 4 x 2GB.

    Instead of buying 2 x 1TB hard drives as a CTO option, you could purchase 2 x 1.5TB or 2 x 2TB HDDs for less money, and you would still have the 640GB. Spare drives are always useful. I use my original 640GB as a spare emergency system boot drive (OS and applications) in an external enclosure.
    Another alternative is to wait a few more weeks, in case the rumours of the introduction of a new Mac Pro range in June have any foundation.

    Interesting questions you have posed here.
    I am thinking about upgrading from my MB to a MBP and I too intend to run a similar set of programs, and with large RAW photo files in Aperture. I find my MB is struggling and I dont want to invest any money in upgrading it, I will use it as a back up. I like the MBP and the 13" screen version is so handy and portable.
    Have you made your decision yet...or are you still sitting on the fence like myself..?

  • Obsolete new "Mac Pro" vs Windows 6 Core 3930K PC - What should I expect?

    OK, I ordered a pretty fast PC from Amazon, kind of a no-name gaming PC but it had great specs, i7 3930 Six Core at 3.2 ghz.
    Installed a Nvidia GTX 670, did the supported cards text file hack, and Premiere Pro 5.5 on it, along with Quicktime Pro, and fonts I needed. I also installed a nifty program called X-Mouse which allowed me to customize my logitech scrolling mouse to use Premiere Pro as I also using USB Overdrive on my Mac - indispensable software.
    Got a KVM so I could use my 2 large displays currently hooked up to my Mac on the PC without totally disabling my Mac Pro 2008 8 core - it is my workhorse and I use it all the time.
    Finally got the PC somewhat functional on with Premiere Pro and even got it working with projects and media via a fast network connection. It seemed like butter vs my old Mac Pro.  My lack of being a Windows power user I'm sure was responsible for my ultimate failure at getting my Windows system, but there could be hardware issues with this particular PC as well. Ultimately it was a total pain to share projects and media that resided on my Mac. Using Premiere Pro on the PC was identical in many ways to the Mac, just faster.
    However the PC started going downhill pretty much as I got it working. It wouldn't properly reboot, always spinning in the 'Shutting Down' screen. I had to hard restart it all the time.
    Then things started to go south, probably due to system corruption from having to hard reset it. I installed a fresh OS on the other internal drive in hopes it would fix the problems, a whole new set of software to get Premiere Pro working well. Again, shutdown hangs, without any diagnostics other than windows coming up at the hard restart saying there was a problem with the previous shutdown, and wiping out a lot of stuff each time. Then in hopes of curing the ills, a reformat of the drives, reinstallation of Windows 7 Pro, and then the ability to actually install the OS. 2 reformatted drives that cannot b installed with OS. Epic failure. The replacement is on the way.
    But this being said, the amount of time in order to make this environment 'cross platform' as well as the indiocyncracies of Windows (to me, I'm not bashing Windows - it seems to be a fine OS!)  makes me rethinking the PC for Premiere Pro switch.
    I realize the current Mac Pros are basically obsolete, however, MY Mac Pro really is, it's from 2008 and not the fastest model from that era (2.8ghz 8 core, non threading Xeon.)
    Investigating "new" Mac Pros, I can get a 6 Core 3.3 ghz threading Mac Pro plus 32GB of RAM for about $3,500. I can get a 12 Core 3.09 ghz for $6,700 and a refurb 2.93ghz with 32GB for about $5,700. The Windows PC with everything I need is in the $4K range. I don't need any new peripherals to make it a direct replacement for my current Mac Pro, all PCI, peripherals will just work. I'm familiar with the OS, and all my apps and plugins will work, no KVM necessary, no cross platform issues. Just not as cost effective as the PC and perhaps slower.
    However...
    Disregarding the cost, my time is valuable and I probably spend a good 3 solid days getting something non functional to work. There will be continual inefficiencies because I'm not a Windows shop, and I don't foresee this.
    Will any 'new' Mac Pro, regardless of the cost, get me to the speed using Premiere Pro of this 6 core 3.2ghz i7 3930K? If I get the answer that the Mac 12 core will get me there, it may be a viable option. If the 6 core will get me 80% there, it might be the 'best buy' option.

    Thanks Eric and Harm for the helpful answers. I was hoping that Windows 7 had evolved to the point where knowning and using some of the troubleshooting techniques that Harm mentioned would not have to be necessary. I do have the ability / skill, etc, but not necessarily the desire to troubleshoot, but was kind of hoping that I wouldn't need to get to this level on such a simple installation, really it was just CS 5.5 and Video drivers. It is very possible the KVM was blocking on the USB request. This occasionally will happen with a hung device on Mac OS X and firewire, but usually it times out after a while. However there have been those odd times where I needed to unplug everything and even do a NVRAM reset on the Mac to get it back. This is pretty rare though. I even have my Mac set to 'verbose mode' which leaves the unix console up on boot and shutdown so I can track offending things like this. Maybe there is a Windows equivalent to this, which would have been helpful. Knowing that there might be some request that wasn't returning, I left Windows in this state for hours, it never got back. I had no choice but to hard restart it. I didn't examine logs and such, though I could have. I just want it to work or to fail gracefully, and not fail in such a way that makes it unusable and unrecoverable without in depth troubleshooting. I also have to use the KVM, without it I can't possibly use the system. So if the KVM makes the PC hang, then I can't use the PC. It doesn't make my Mac hang.
    I am also quite positive that ADK's systems would have been a lot more robust and their emergency DVD's would have actually been able to help me as well as their expert tech support. I also appreciate that though Eric and ADK are a business, that the advice you have provided to me is just helpful and agnostic. This goes a long way to pushing my next PC purchase in the ADK direction!
    Getting back to my original question, which was not one of troubleshooting Windows PC's though that advice is helpful...
    Seems like a 12-Core Mac would allow me to edit well. I can edit right now with my 2008 Mac Pro 8 Core with 24GB RAM and 240GB SSD and Quadro 4000 and numerous internal and external RAIDs, but just scrubbing AVCHD I see all 8 processors go to nearly 100 % utilization and it's laggy. Not the best editing experience. If I have a few AVCHDs overlaid, which I do, it's almost unusable. As the Premiere Pro project gets bigger and more complex, it seems that everything gets slower. I have no scientific basis for this but I think it's true. It doesn't have to be just the sequence I'm working on, it seems to be even navigating simple sequences will be laggier if in a larger complex Premiere Pro project file.
    On the Windows PC i7, for the few hours it was functioning, I was able to scrub AVCHD 1080P footage over a gigabit ethernet like butter.  I was pleased with this. It was a very simple 1 track sequence, however. I didn't have a chance to try it with more complex projects before it was unusable.
    Would I get smooth performance from a Mac Pro 6 Core, which is $2,500 less than the 12 core? From the basic Mac benchmarking I see, I see a 'rating' of 14000 for the Mac Pro 6 Core, and around 9000 for my current Mac Pro 8 core. This is about 50% more. I don't think 50% is going to get me to 'butter.'
