Advice on consolodating libraries, moving music...?

Hi,
I want to put all my music on one (new) computer. Right now, my music is on 2 old computers and on each computer, my music is in several different folders.
I'm thinking I sould consolodate both libraries first, and then move the files to the new compouter.
I think that if I do consolodate first, when I move the library files, I won't have to worry about all the different file pathways for all the different music folders matching up on the new computer.
Is this true?
But first, if I consolodate my library, will my playlists all remain intact?
And will all the information -like BPMs- that I've added manually be available in my new, consolodated library?
Will I have to do anything else like mess with the XML file after using the consolodate library feature?
Sorry if this is a dumb question.
And thank you for helping!

Hello Terry,
I've seen posts about the purchased music problem but I'm sorry I can't help. However there is a good general guide to switching from Windows to Mac at the following link that touches on moving music as well How to Move to a Mac and How to move music between authorised computers

  • Moving music from new Macbook to iPhone4

I recently bought a new Macbook, which replaced an old PC laptop. I also have an iPhone4 which I prefer to hold most of my music.
I moved all my music libraries from my old laptop to my new Macbook and all my songs appear in my new iTunes, with checks next to each song
    indicating they are available.
Last night I wanted to update the music on my iPhone and went to sync my music. I chose to sync certain songs only and checked the artists I wanted moved to my phone. It proceeded to leave off roughly 1,600 songs and erase the contents of my iPhone music, including playlists and ringtones. All of my songs appear in iTunes, so I don't mind remaking playlists but now my phone has almost no music.
I have authorized the iTunes on my new Macbook, so I can't figure out why it wouldn't just update the music.
I have read through a bunch of other threads but they don't seem to indicate a step I may have missed.

If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7 A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there's a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to your Mac at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
If you prefer something more automated there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others as well, they are generally quite straightforward. • Moving music library from one computer to another

I need to rephrase my question: Is there a way to transfer my itunes library from one computer (that is being discarded) to my new computer that already has an itunes library on it? we have a new computer that my son put his library on, but we want to combine our libraries and use just the one computer to sync our music on each of our ipods. Thanks.

You can copy the music directly from the iPods. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod

You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod

  • I have PC with Windows 7 and iPad. My music in iTunes on PC is available under Music on iPad but having trouble moving music to i-Cloud. I suceed in moving the music to iCloud on PC but when I look at iPad music still on device and not in iCloud. Help?

I am a beginner using Apple software, so please bare with me.
I am having trouble moving music from the iPad to iCloud in order to save space in the device.
I realise that in order to store music not purchased on iTunes store can only be stored in iCloud if you subscribe to iTunes Match which I have done.
Appears that moving music from iTunes on my PC to iCloud is successful by deleting song or album in iTunes library and than click on "Keep song" instead of sending to recycle bin. After this has been done the Cloud Icon appears on the album or against the song. However when I then look at Music on the iPad the album or song have not been moved to iCloud. I have tried syncronising with cable connected between PC and iPad. After that has been done the message is that sync was successful bujt still music has not been moved into the Cloud.
Can anybody help? What am I doing wrong? Is there a way to move the music to the cloud working on the iPad only (without trying to use the PC to move the music to the cloud)?

You can only add music to iTunes Match from your iTunes library on your computer, not from your iOS device.  If you have music on your iPad that is not on your computer, you'll have to import it to your iTunes library on your computer to add it to iTunes Match.
Music purchased from the iTunes store can be imported directly to your iTunes library by authorizing your computer for the Apple ID(s) used to purchase the music (in Store>Authorize This Computer), then connecting the iPad to your computer, opening iTunes and going to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases.  Music from other sources will require using 3rd party software to transfer to your computer, such as Touch Copy.

At night, as soon as I plug my iphone to be recharged, my iphone starts behaving anomaly.  It is like somebody has taken control of it.  I see the screens moving, music starts playing and then stopping, etc.  I have noticed that several nights.  What I do is in Settings is to change  into Plane Mode, thinking that, may be if I do that, somebody that has taking control of it will not be able to download data.  Yesterday night, I was awakened by an alarm, whose setting I did not changed. When I looked over, the alarm screen changed to Settings and the Plane Mode changed alone in front of my eyes, from on to off.
I have not observed such a situation during the day. Only when I plug the cable.
I suspected that may be there is no Trojan installed. May be the cable, which is a spare cable, has been modified by a hacker, and it has electronics installed in the connector.  But tested with the original cable, and the behavior was the same, as described above.

    Thanks Meg for your reply.
It could be that both cable are bad. But, anyway, you would not expect any of these manifestations, even with a bad cable. I had bad cable for my 4s, and never saw such a thing!
I contacted by chat the support of Apple.  They told me that this behavior could be a software problem and recommended me to do a full recover of my iphone. That meant, putting in at the factory conditions and recup all the data from the backup.  I did that, and the behavior did not change.  The backup was made with the data of my PC, not icloud.  Tomorrow will try with icloud and check if that will work.

  • Moving music from external hard drive to i-tunes

Please I need some help with moving music on an external hard drive to my i-tunes library. I think that I have cut and pasted it to i-tunes from this hard drive but once the hard drive is disconnected...i-tunes can not find it. I would appreciate a step by step run down on how I might do this

I am having the same problem, only with music I import into iTunes from a CD. The tracks will import, and will synch to my Ipod, but will not play in iTunes unless the original, source CD is in the computer. It seems to me that once iTunes "accepts" imported tracks, it should play them, whether the source CD is present or not.
I suspect that iTunes will be able to "find" all of your songs, and play them, provided the original source (hard drive) is hooked back up to your computer.
But you shouldn't have to do that. iTunes will play most imported tracks without requiring the source to be present. Puzzling.

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 n above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

  • Question about moving music from an iPod to your computer.

In my household, we have iTunes on three different computers. My mother downloaded music on my brother's computer, and it's on his library. We want to burn a cd with the purchased album, but his computer does not have a cd burner, but the other two do. Is there a way to move music from one computer to another, or possibly moving music from an iPod to a computer's library?

Music is synced to iphone from itunes.
Plug in iphone and select whatever you like to sync from itunes to iphone.

  • Moving music and duplication

    Hi,
I have searched about 5 or so threads that i thought might be relevant to my query, but whilst they address some of the issues, I hoped someone might be able to help with all of the issues i have.
First up, i have and Ipod and and Iphone.
    What i need to do:
My music seems to be spread out in about 4 different locations on two seperate hard drives. I tend to upload music from CD's, purchase from Ituns and download music.
I have just moved house and have come across about 500 old cd's, of which i would like to put a number of CD's onto the computer and i see this as an ideall time to perhaps purchase a new hard drive or perhaps and an external one and move all of my music to one location.
    My worries are the following:
    1. How do i maintain my playlists as they are crucial to what goes onto my Iphone (space is at a premium).
    2. How do i maintain my ratings and other information.
    3. Whenever historically i have moved music around and then changed the location on itunes, i seem to get tons and tons of duplicate songs, which i then have to go through and delete.
    4. If i am okay with losing my playlists, is there an easy way of itunes 'forgetting' everything and then starting over, or would i need to remove and install itunes and if this is the case, what happens with my iphone syncing?
    Can anyone please help me?
    thanks in advance
    LEe

If it copies the music then can i assume that i can safely delete the older copy of the two?
    Yes.
Do yuo think consolidating the library before moving it is the best option......
Only if you want iTunes to keep track of everything (yes, it is the best option).
if i change the location of the music folder, then consolidate, will it move ALL my music the new folder location?
Yes, this is exactly how you should do it.
Consolidate copies everything in iTunes to the location shown in iTunes prefs -> Advanced - iTunes music folder location.

  • HT2688 Moving music thru Home Sharing

When you are moving music from one computer to a new one thru Home Sharing is there a setting to make sure you are not importing duplicate songs? I had already downloaded all my purchased songs from the icloud and now I want to transfer the rest of the songs.

    Tony,
iTunes has two kinds of sharing:
Regular Sharing allows listening but not copying.
Home Sharing does allow copying (but requires that both computers be authorized to the account)
It sounds like you are using Regular Sharing.  To get going on Home Sharing, see this doc:

  • Moving music from external to internal - what do I need to do?

Most of the discussions here regarding moving music seem to be from moving to an internal device to external. I have the opposite situation coming up and need some help.
I'm getting a new MacBook Pro (late 2011) next week with a 500 Gb internal HD. I have a 6-year-old "first generation" MBP that came with a 100 Gb drive and had no room for my 162 Gb iTunes library. Now that I have the space, I want to copy all my music from the external to the internal, and although I know that I should copy my "iTunes" folder on the external to the "Music" folder on the new computer, I'm unsure whether or not iTunes will "fix" the paths on it's own, or whether I'll have to drag all 2,000+ folders to the iTunes app to have it recognize the path changes.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance...

    Hello Clinton,
Did you solve it! I have the same problem as I want to store my "central" library for all other macs in my family to use when they want to use Itunes, makes sense frome a storage efficiency to me. I stopped by at the mac store in Stockholm and they said it was only to move the music folder, and go in and change under settings and advanced in Itunes to redirect it to the external hard drive and the new music folder.... but no, doesnt work.
    Thanks for any help!
