Advice on early 2009

Hi,
I now have an early 2009 Imac, which was an upgrade for me from an old power book.
The Imac is currently running 10.5.8, a clean install was done when I got the machine.
I purchased disk to upgrade to Snow Leopard with the intention of then upgrading to Mountain Lion.
I am questioning now whether to do that on this machine, which is 4+ years old.
Worried it will slow it down and perhaps it would be best to just stick with Snow Leopard.
Also want to upgrade from Adobe CS3 and not sure which version to upgrade to, Cloud or CS6. Which would be the most efficient versions of OS and CS to run on this IMac without compatibility issues, slowness, etc.
I don't want to max out this machine, it's an upgrade for me from the Power book and I don't have the budget right now to buy a newer machine.
Other specs are 2.66gh intel core duo
Memory 4gb 1067 MHZ DDR3
I am an artist/textile designer and I use a combination of Illustrator and Photoshop mainly, most files are small but on occasion I work in Photoshop and the files can become close to a gig, if that is of any help.
Advice appreciated!!
Thank you for your time!

Yeah, you can get it from the Mac App Store once you're in Snow. I haven't installed Mav, so can't really give an informed answer. It might make more efficient use of memory/RAM.
Looks like CS3 is compatible. EDIT: But you should check compatibility for any other apps you must continue to use. You can check compatibility from http://roaringapps.com/
http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/mac-os-mavericks-compatability.html
But one caveat: I wouldn't jump right in until Apple has released a few point updates that clear any known bugs or issues.
Another caveat, don't upgrade until you have a known reliable backup on an external drive, preferably a clone (easiest to restore, if necessary.) If you don't, you'll have no way of going back with all your user data, if it disappoints
Try out Snow for a while; as I said earlier, if it does what you need it to, then no point in upgrading. Well, only point might be when it becomes clear that Apple is no longer supporting it for security. And that may be sooner rather than later.
Here's an extensive, detailed review of Mav.
http://arstechnica.com/apple/2013/10/os-x-10-9/
From what I can see, it adds a lot more iOS-like features, which I have no use for. And I wouldn't put one bit of my data in iCloud. I don't trust that in anyone elses hands but my own.

  • I have an early 2009 iMac need advice

I am new to this forum. As I mentioned in subject I have an early 2009 iMac with 4 GB of Ram. I am up to date with my operating system, running Yosemite 10.10.1.
My problem is that my computer is slow - very slow.  It takes forever for the computer to start up and once it up forever for programs to load. Mail is the best example taking it a minimum of 5 minutes to load and in the mean time nothing else will load. RecentlyI started running the disk utility and repairing permissions.  That helps a tiny bit. I also got CleanMyMac 2 and use it as well. In reading some of the forum I noticed someone suggested to run an EtreCheck report and post its report which I have done.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks

Pay attention to what rkaufmann87 is saying, because I agree.
    Chrome is very resource intensive.
It is possible you are running other memory intensive apps.
You have a lot of 3rd party additions loaded at boot time.  Do you really need all of them?  Even after you get rid of MacCleaner (as suggested by rkaufmann87).
Do you really need the seagate and WD drive software?  The Mac is fairly good at accessing disks without 3rd party intervention.
Any of the 3rd party additions listed by EtreCheck that you do not need, you should consider uninstalling.
    That fact that you have
        171.19 GB    Page-ins
in just about 4 days, says you have about 0.5megabytes per second.  That is a huge load on your disk drive.
Either cut back on the RAM intensive apps, or get more RAM.  At least 8GB, but if your Mac supports it, 16GB.  Crucial.com and MacSales.com (OWC) are well respected by the long term forum contributes.

  • I was resetting my macbook pro 17 (early 2009) to factory settings but does not restore due to a problem with the restore disk. Please advice me on what to do next.

I was resetting my macbookpro 17 (early 2009) to factory settings but was indicating problems on the restore disk.  I erased my macintosh hd drive so the hd is empty.  What do I do next?

Get an external drive and make a clone of your internal, erase the internal, set it for 1 partition (OSX Journaled) and restore the clone.

  • What is the best way to upgrade my Early 2009 Macbook Pro 17"?

My Macbook hasn't been working well and I'm worried about things getting worse when going to Yosemite.  My system has some hardware problems (CD drive doesn't work, needs a new battery), but I'm looking to upgrade the whole system now.  I'd like to up the RAM to 8GB, put in a new hard drive (solid state?), etc...
Here is my EtreCheck-- I am looking for advice about what needs to be done to get my system back up and working?  Thanks!

    1. Increase your RAM to the maximum 8 Gigs.
    2. Replace your 5400 rpm hard drive with either a SSD or, if price is an obstacle, a hybrid 7200 rpm drive.
    3. Buy a new battery, recommend the genuine Apple one.
    4. Replace the DVD drive, if you need it.

  • How do I properly zero out or erase the hard drives in my early 2009 Mac Pro 4,1 tower?

How do I properly zero out or erase the hard drives in my early 2009 Mac Pro 4,1 tower?
I assume there are already instructions on Apple.com someplace but haven't seen them yet… I have to one terabyte drives one the operating system the other is blank I want to start fresh I want to zero out both drives but I didn't want to make any mistakes
I know I can use disk utility to 0 Out Dr., #2 that means I will have to take out the operating system hard drive out of my 2008 Mac Pro and put it into my 2009 Mac Pro to use the disk utility to zero out drive one the OS drive in my 2009 Mac Pro am my correct
I just need a little bit a help I want to go slow so I don't make any mistakes with the sleds or with the erasing process which journaled to choose encrypted or not etc. etc.
Furthermore is there instructions on the site on how to change the hard drive into a different sled because the sleds and my 2009 are different than my 2008 any advice
    Thank you

I'm doing this because my friend told me that zeroing out the drive can nap bad sectors and also later for some kind of diagnostics usage of the drive or something like that he wasn't really clear
My friend was really specific he said choose the option that writes zero's once over the drive that is plenty good enough I was inclined to use the maximum seven write ...I just want to make sure the drive has no bad sectors and that's it's it's zeroed out for possible future diagnostics usage or something that he said was usable later
he also advised me to run a test on it but I don't have the software you mentioned or the software that he has… So I may have to take the drives over to his house unless you have some kind of free software that's easy to use that you could suggest that will not only zero out the drive but test the drive completely
I am completely new to Mac I'm no dummy but at the same time I'm not super technically capable I mean I can surprise myself I'm pretty good but I need a good teacher… How expensive is this lifeguard software?
    Thank you

  • Win 8 USB + Early 2009 MBP = Issues!!

    Hey Everyone,
Seeing as I have installed Vista and Win 7 on this MBP I thought installing Windows 8 would be fairly straightforward. It turns out it has been hours, and hours of frustration.
I am going to lay out all my problems, and perhaps you guys can help me solve one, or hopefully all of them.
    Problem:
When I downloaded Windows 8 I opted to create a USB installation drive. This drive worked perfectly on my girlfriends PC, but when trying to use BootCamp, it simply doesn't recognize the USB drive, and so it won't partition the drive and continue with the installation.
    Attempted Solution 1:
I thought I would manually partition the HD into two (OS X - WIN 8), then boot from the USB. This worked, except when I get to the screen where I format the partition, it gives me an error and won't let me install. Even if I reformat the partition it won't allow me to go forward.
    Attempted Solution 2:
I read somewhere online that if you bring up the DOS prompt and do some manual formatting it will work, however it didn't seem to make a difference for me. It still wouldn't allow me to install it.
    Computer:
    Macbook Pro (17" - Early 2009)
    4GB
    OS X 10.8.2
I really appreciate any help or advice you can provide.
    CLM

You can only install Windows from a USB drive on Macs without SuperDrive (MacBook Air, Late 2012 iMac, Mid 2011 or newer Mac mini, and MacBook Pro with Retina display). If you try to install Windows from a USB drive on other Macs, it won't be detected.
Also, Windows 8 isn't compatible with Boot Camp, so you should wait until Apple launches updated Boot Camp drivers, or install Windows 7 on your computer

  • Upgrading Early 2009 Mac Pro to Yosemite

I need an upgrading for dummies tutorial   I want to upgrade some applications that I use and can not do that with Mountain Lion which is currently on my Early 2009 Mac Pro. (Processor 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon - Memory 12 GB - Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB - OSX 10.8.5). My monitor is a NEC MultiSync P221W and I use Spectraview II to calibrate. I also have an older Dell monitor attached that I only use for palettes, etc.
I have discovered I can not upgrade to Mavericks and will need to go to Yosemite. I am nervous about the process and undecided what is the best way to tackle this. I assume I will first need to do a full backup and do have a bootable drive that I can use. Can I then just install Yosemite or is it best to do a clean install? I have heard so many negative things about installing Yosemite that I am really uncertain of the best way to tackle this. I am particularly concerned about the reports of system slow down.I have an even older MacBook Pro that is also running Mountain Lion but I have no plans to attempt an upgrade on it. It has had problems since it was fairly new and right now I use an external keyboard and a mouse because using the track pad or keyboard on the laptop cause it to lock up. (Long story and multiple rebuilds during and after Apple Care). So at this point the only machine I am concerned about is the desktop. I use it mainly for Photoshop and Lightroom and Quicken. If someone can give me some advice I would be most appreciative. I am an older gal with casual computer knowledge, living out in the sticks and really have no one available for help. Thanks in advance

Depending on how hard you push your system, size of files you work with.
You may want to look into 5,1 firmware; a W3690 or X5690 3.4GHz 6-core even to help more.

  • MacBook (Early 2009) - Screen freezes (hang) when playing music or video

    Hi,
I have an strange problem with MacBook (Early 2009). Whenever I play music using ITunes or DVD with IDVD or even watch a video on youtube, my macbook will hang suddenly and a strange sound will come out.
To recover from this problem, i have to power off the system and power on the system again.
Initially, I thought it is related to iTunes but the same problem occurs even i use other alternatives (e.g. songbird) for playing of songs.
    Please kindly advice me.
    Thank you.
    Michael.

I have a similar problem since the last update 10,5,7.
Always when I connect my iPod80GB the computer hangs, the problem only exist when running Mac OS X. It won't happen while running windows.
The same problem when I connect an external hard drive the computer hangs aswell (Mac OS X) (not in windows).
My personal feeling is that there are serious bugs in the last program update.

  • Slow iMac from early 2009

I am wondering if there is anything I can do to help my early 2009 iMac: it seems to be really slow lately, especially when I use iPhoto '09 v8.1.2. Even loading things on Safari v7.1 seems to take longer than it used to. I have Mavericks OSX v10.9.5, I'm not sure it that is part of the problem or not. And now Yosemite OSX is out and I'm reluctant to install it while I'm having these issues already. Any advice?
    Thank you!

  • Hard drive for mac mini early 2009 model

    Hi,
My hard drive stopped working, and I would like to purchase a new one.
After checking with several vendors, I could not get an official answer if their drive is supported by Mac Mini early 2009 model.
Can you please advice what hard drive vendors/models do you know are supported?
    Thanks

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The Mac mini uses a 2'5" hard disk, and near all of these hard disks will work with your computer. You can buy the hard disk in OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/
If you want more information, you can only use 9.5 mm hard drives, so search them in OWC and you will find hard drives that will work with your computer. HGST drives have a good reputation and work very well

  • MBP Early 2009 17" HDD 'clicking'

I have a MBP 17" that was manufactured in early 2009 that is making clicking sounds. Originally the macbook made the noise constantly, a gentle click-click sound and not booting up. It just showed a grey screen with an icon that it could not find the files. After opening the base and holding the macbook close to my ear, I found that the hard drive was making the noise and replaced it with a brand new upgrade. Googling my problem also highlighted the fact that my old hard drive was one of those that was liable to a manufacturing defect that left the chemicals used during the disk manufacture process would break down after several years, rendering the drive useless. I then reloaded OSX and all seemed fine until after less than 2 months the noise started again. This time it only started after the PC had been on for several minutes. It also showed up with several messages that it needed the disk to be verified. When I click verify, the macbook would freeze and I would have to hold the power button to reboot the mac.
As my problem has once again reappeared, I am thinking that there could be a more serious underlying issue with the motherboard. I don't think that it is a problem with the memory based upon the MacBooks performance. Could anyone that has experienced this problem give me any further advice, before I go to the boss and explain the likely hood that a new MBP will have to be purchased, as a new logic board would cost over £500?

If I were you, I would probably take the machine to your local Apple Store and have them give it some testing and a diagnosis for repair. I'm betting that they will tell you that you need a new hard drive - and you very well might - but it's rather unusual to have two drives fail so closely together.
Which drive did you use for the replacement? There are some 'known bad' drives for Macs...
    Clinton

  • IMac early 2009 with Yosemite running really really slow

    Hi,
Would appreciate some expert advice on this. My iMac has been extremely slow and lag-gy the past few months. Noticeable after I upgraded to Yosemite (perhaps not the smartest thing I did last year).
What should I do now? Upgrade RAM? Free up hard drive? Buy a new computer?
    thanks

When you have the slowdown, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Can I use a Geforce GTX570 on Early 2009 MacPro running Mavericks

    ...fairly new to all this so please bear with me;
I have bought an early 2009 MacPro with a single Geforce GTX570 graphics card which is running fine on Mac OS10.7.5
I would like to start video editing and color grading using Final Cut Pro 10.1 and DaVinci Resolve lite 10.1 (and Resolve 11 when it is released in the near future)
A system requirement for Final Cut Pro 10 is OSX10.9 (Mavericks).
So, the question I am trying to answer is; can I upgrade the OS to Mavericks and will the Geforce GTX570 work with it?
I'm not sure where to start to find the answer, the NVIDIA Geforce support site wasn't very helpful and I haven't real
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks

Geforce GTX570 works well with Mavericks. Take a look at this https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4391012?start=45&tstart=0

  • How can i install 8 gb ram on a mac mini early 2009 when it says i dont need the EFI firmware 2.1?i can only install 4 gb but the side of OWC says i can install 8 gb? what to do?

i have a mac mini early 2009 and i want to install 8 gb ram but it doesn,t work.
it says on the OWC site that i have to install the EFI firmware 2.1 update but it won,t let me,it says(the mac mini)that i don,t need this update.
my kernel is 32bit but my EFI is 64 bit,how can i install 64 bit so i can use the 8GB cause with 32 bit i can,t use more than 4gb ram

    Check your computer's EFI Boot ROM version;
    1. From the Apple () menu, choose About This Mac
    2. Click More Info Under Contents
    3. Select Hardware
    If your Mac mini's Boot ROM version is the following or more recent, then you do not need the update to use 8 GB of RAM;
    Boot ROM Version: MM31.0081.B06

  • Early 2009 MacBook Air. On startup no keyboard or mouse me to login. Neither is the USB working so I cannot use an external mouse or keyboard either.

Early 2009 MacBook Air. On startup no keyboard or mouse me to login. Neither is the USB working so I cannot use an external mouse or keyboard either. If I keep restarting the machine suddenly sometime I get mouse and keyboard control and I am able to login and work. After sometime though mouse and keyboard Control is lost again and the machine hangs.
Lately another problem has cropped up. Now the machine starts up and seems to work for longer time but I have no 0 key and USB everything else is fine.
    What could be the issue

    1. Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    2. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
