Advice on Installing Windows 7 on a MBP 17"

Need some advice on install Windows 7 (barebones) on a Mac 17" MBP.
It is possible to instaall Windows 7 with out all the crap that MS has in Winows 7 and does it play nice once you do have it installed with ParallelsDesktop-7.0.15054.722853 or would I be better at installing VirtualBox instead.
The only reason I'm going this route after almost five years or running straight Mac is that there are still backward sites on the net that don't recognize Safari, FF or Chrome as alternatives to IE as well as Corel and their thinking that PaintShop Pro is'nt good enough for the Mac Platform.
Any help would be appriciated. I probably won't be able to join in the conversation as is I'm on the road for thenext few day.

Well, my 2cts would be to check out the forums of the different VM's  and see what or if any one is having issues with what you may be using or thinking about using.
You might be thinking of a "computer bundle" version of Windows, (Dell, HP, etc,) yeah """without all the crap that MS has in Winows 7""" they do come with a bunch of "Trial" stuff, but the standalone version, to me anyway, doesn't seem to have near as much.
About the only major drawback with a VM is it shares the computers resources like ram, processor, etc, so the larger applications may not work because of it.
For me I'm in Windows long enough to have a physical copy via Boot Camp (I need the hardware) and I use Parallels (I use BC for the VM) for the temporary/quick things like reading a .docx or some silly thing I get and have to have it translated or accessing a web site that needs IE.
The one thing that sticks out for me with Parallels (6.x) is they have a "Coherence Mode" that runs in the background, any Windows items you click on in the Mac OS side, will just open instead of "Booting" into the full VM. Won't work with the "Mega" applications but for the few times you may need it it's fine.
I really can't give you more info on Parallels as I forget I even have it to use most of the time. (got it as a package bundle, couldn't pass it up, I would have bought one of them anyway.)

First, you can install Microsoft's Security Essentials in the Win 7 VM and keep it up-to-date. Second, you can turn off Sharing in Fusion's System Settings to keep the VM environment separate from your Mac. Third, you can look into Sophos Anti-Virus http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/sophos-antivirus-for-mac-home-ed ition/download.aspx for the Mac host.

  • Unable to install windows 8 on 2013 MBP

So I got windows 8.1 DVD for running windows on my MBP 2013 with OS mavericks 9.1. But I'm stuck with this screen. I don't even know why I can't click "Install or remove winodws 7 or later version" it's greyed out wheather windows 8.1 DVD is coonected or even with iso version of it. I know it needs to be checked to get windows 8.
I called apple customer service but they didnt help me saying windows 8.1 is not supported.. I see many people running windows 8.1 on Mac without problem.
Please teach me how to slove this problem and install windows 8.1 on MBP 2013
I have two bootcamps in disk utility, i bet it's because I tried to bootcamp a few times and I cant seem to remove it. Should I delete them to get windows 8.1? I never did partition setting or something like that. I can't even reach that setting since that "insatll or remove windows 7 or later version" is greyed out in bootcamp assiatant. Please help!

with (DVD, no USB), it goes like this when I click continue. After putting the USB stick to Macbook Pro, its the same as I showed you picture last time, that state. Even without DVD.

  • How do I create a bootable USB Drive to install Windows 7 on a MBP Retina

I'm trying to install Windows 7 on a MBP Retina.(I'm running Mountain Lion)  I followed BootCamp's directions to create a bootable copy of Windows on a USB Flash Drive.  When I go to install, Boot Camp creates the partition, but I get a Windows black screen that says that "there is no bootable drive - hit any key".  I have to force shut down, because hitting any key does nothing.  I tried the Bootcamp directions at least 3 times, but have been unable to get the USB Drive to start up the Install program.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Joe

Disconnect all external drives. Only have the the USB flash drive connected.

  • Installing Windows 7 on a MBP in clamp mode

Hi - my MBP screen is broken so I use an external monitor all the time - as in Clamp mode.
I'm trying to install Windows 7 on a MBP 10.8.2 Intel 2.85 Duo.
Bootcamp partitions the drive, then the computer restarts - but nothing happens - no output to the monitor.
Is there any way to install W7 on a MBP using an external monitor only?
    Thanks for any help.

  • Problem installing Windows 8.1 on MBP

Ok so I was having bluetooth issue in Windows 7, which is a different issue, so I decided to try Windows 8.1 Pro X64
Using boot camp I get to the part where Windows is asking where to install.
I choose Drive 0 Partition 4: Boot Camp and format it.
Once that is done I click next and I get a message at the bottom saying:
"Setup was unable to use the existing partition because the system volume does not contain the required free space."
Is this talking about the EFI partition? The EFI partition is showing 1mb of free space
There is also another partition: Drive 0 Partition 3 that has 619MB and 0 free.
Also this is an ISO from a Microsoft MSDN account not the regular one.
I think I may try Windows 8 instead and see if that works. Any idea?

I want to install window 8.1 on my iMac by using bootcamp and i have a problem.
First, I have created a bootable USB stick with window 8.1. I started bootcamp assistant and i notice that i have only 2 options: don't have create a window 7 or later version install disk.
From iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011) - Technical Specifications, you have a iMac with a built-in Optical drive.
    Slot-loading 8x SuperDrive with 4x double-layer burning (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
From Boot Camp 5.1: Frequently asked questions - Apple Support
Can I install Windows from an ISO image?
To find out if your Mac supports that feature, open Boot Camp Assistant, then click the Continue button. If you see a checkbox labeled “Create a Windows 7 or later install disk,” your Mac can install Windows from an ISO image.
Is your iMac Optical drive not working?
So I googling the internet a lot then I found it on youtube. I change the plist file in boot camp assistant by deleting pre and add code on terminal. Then i got a first option(create a window 7 or later version install disk).
I made again a bootable usb stick with window 8.1 from ISO with the bootcamp assistant first option.
This creates a new set of problems and on older Macs does not work very well. Bootcamp Assistant sets the Mac NVRAM to boot from the Optical drive.
Then when i restarted the Mac keeping the ALT-Option pressed it was only Macintosh HD , recovery-10.10 and EFI Boot.
Why i don't have window partition? I'm so confused. What i've miss?
EFI Boot is the Windows installer.
On your Mac, you need to use both a USB and a Physical DVD to install Windows.

  • Wanting to Install Windows 7 on my MBP......

I've recently bought a copy of Windows 7 and I wanted to install on my MBP as there are some applications that I use for work that do not work on OSX. I opened the Boot Camp set up assistant and created a 32Gb partition on my 250Gb hard drive called Windows 7. Then as per instructions I inserted the 64bit version of the Windows 7 disk.
This is where I encountered issues. When I tried to install Windows 7 it said that my partition was not in the required NTFS format. Therefore I existed the process and tried to delete the Windows 7 partition that I have created, however it is not letting me do so.
When I now open the Boot Camp assistant, I get an error message stating 'the startup disk must be formatted as a single OS extended (journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows'.
Therefore I have the following questions:
    1. How can I delete the 32Gb Windows 7 partition that I have created (I have tried via disk utility but to no avail).
    2. How can I create a new partition in the required NTFS format for the Windows 7 installation (I do not believe that boot camp gave me this option, and it also only referred to Windows XP and Vista - no mention of Windows 7)
    3. Are there any other pitfalls I should be aware of when installing Windows 7
Thanks in advance for all assistance.

    Hi MacMiner,
while usually the correct way to remove your Windows partition is to use the BootCamp Assistant again which should give you the option to remove the made Windows partition and revert back to one OSX volume.
After that's done a reboot of your Mac might be advisable. After the reboot use the BootCamp Assistant again to make the Windows partition and then install the (hopefully correct) version of Windows.
Only if that's not working (whatever the reason) :
    1) boot your Mac from your OSX install DVD
    2) choose your language and then 'ignore' (cancel) the installation
    3) from the Top Menu (Utilities) start Disk Utility (DU)
    4) in DU click on your harddisk (not any partition) in the left pane (the first item listed)
    5) in the right pane use the 'Partition'-Tab
    6) click to highlight on the ex-Windows partition you want to delete
    7) click on the small '-' Button at the bottom
That should delete your former Windows partition
    After that's done successfully
    8) Drag the partition separator line until it encompasses the entire drive and then select apply.
    9) Quit Disk Utility
    10) reboot your Mac from your harddisk.
Since you are 'fumbling' with your OSX partition you should consider having/making a backup of it before trying the a.m. procedure. Just in case.
The BootCamp Installation Guide (to be found here http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/ ) pages 8 to 10 shows you when to reformat the WIndows partition to NTFS.
Since OSX can not do this you have to do this during the Windows installation.
IMHO, no more pitfalls to be there...
    Regards
    Stefan

    every thing is so amazing
The divers work in Parallels because Parallels is creating drivers for virtual hardware. Parallels is not using your computer's hardware it is creating virtual hardware. There still are no Windows 8 Bootcamp drivers. Bootcamp uses your computer's actual hardware.

  • Worth installing Windows 7 before selling MBP?

I'm planning to sell my MacBook Pro 13 (mid-2010) on eBay UK.  I can install Windows 7 Professional alongside OS X for about £25, but is that likely to be financially worthwhile?  Is a dual boot machine likely to be more in demand?  Or should I just do a clean install of Snow Leopard from the original disk and forget about Windows?

Thanks.  I've read that page, and also How to prepare your Mac for sale, by Thomas Reed.  It seems a pity that recent versions of OS X are tied to your Apple ID in that way.  I'd rather be able to offer a clean install of Yosemite (as some people on eBay do!), but yes, I will do a clean install of Snow Leopard instead.

  • Recovery advice advice after installing windows

    Hi all,
Not really a noob, but this a noob question so is best placed here, so don't need to presume I dont know anything.
Right so I wanted to play the South Park game (it's awesome btw) so had to install windows. I thought I know il just remove my SSD and install windows on a different one (HDD2) and il be able to dual boot just by swapping the drives out. Unfortunately I did not have the foresight to remove my second (HDD1) and despite being told to install on the new drive (HDD2) windows decided to install it's boot loader onto my main storage drive (HDD1) (which must have been sda1 (or whatever the window equivalent is.)
My drives are partitioned as follows:
    SSD: / (maybe /boot)
    HDD1: /home /var swap
    HDD2: Windows.
My first thoughts were that grub had been ovrewritten however I can choose to boot from the SSD and grub will come up however nothing happens when ArchLinux is selected. I am in the process of finding a spare SATA cable as I suppose the best way to do this is to connect all 3 drives and setup true dual boot. I plan to just go ahead with all 3 drives connected boot into a live cd, chroot then do 'grub-install' and 'os-prober' and I believe that should solve it. I am only posting here really for certainty that I'm not being dumb and going to break everything as I have alot of data on the HDD1 drive.
    Cheers, Oli

That game works perfectly under Linux with Wine.

  • Installing Windows 7 on 2011 MBP without Boot Camp

I have a mid (late?) 2011 MBP 15" I got in August. I instantly installed a seperate parition with Snow Leopard on it, because I really dislike Lion. I still have the Lion and Recovery partition, just incase. I've done all my Windows needs through VM's, but I just got a device that will only work natively, through dual booting. However, because I already have the Lion/Snow Leopard paritions, Boot Camp is just yelling at me. I have no idea where else to get the support drivers, I figured maybe they're on the Recovery partition and will show up in Windows (it's supposed to be the "install disc"). So I made a small FAT partition in Disk Utility, booted the windows install disc, followed through the prompts, then when it came to select a disk, It said I couldn't select that partition because the disk is of the GPT partition style. I tried to click format, didn't seem to do anything.. Why is it giving me this error? Doesn't Windows 7 support GPT and EFI now? And where can I find the support drivers since Boot Camp won't let me download them?

Windows 7 supports BIOS and UEFI 2.x firmware. Apple's hardware uses Intel EFI 1.10 even on new 2011 hardware, and that EFI is not supported by Windows 7. Apple provides an EFI compatibility support module (a CSM) which bridges between EFI and a BIOS they provide. This CSM-BIOS boot mode is what's used for supporting Windows 7 bootability.
Windows booting BIOS mode expects the boot disk to have an MBR. When booting UEFI mode, it expects the boot disk to be GPT. This presents the small problem that for a single drive to have both a Windows BIOS installation, and a Mac OS EFI installation, the disk needs both MBR and GPT partition schemes. This is a non-standard situation according to the UEFI spec.
A conforming GPT disk also has an MBR, but with a single special entry, a protective entry. Sometimes this is called the Protective MBR because its sole job is to present the disk as completely allocated to legacy MBR applications that know nothing about GPT. Bootcamp Assistant, when it resizes a disk, alters both the GPT to reflect the new partition being created for Windows, and it creates a hybrid MBR - which is an MBR that has more than one entry.
This is what the Windows installer wants in order to proceed: an MBR entry for the space allocated for Windows installation. When you create a FAT partition in Disk Utility, it only makes an entry for it in the GPT, it does not make an entry for it in the MBR.
Because hybrid MBRs are non-standard, and considered flakey and dangerous, there is a rather narrow path for them to be as safe as they can be. Given your new partition layout because you have two Mac OS installations on it, Bootcamp Assistant may not want to proceed.

  • Can I install windows 7 using my MBP on my new Mac Mini

I have a MBP that runs both Lion and Windows7 via bootcamp.   I just got a mac mini.  I would love to bootcamp that drive and load windows 7 as well.   But I cheaped out and did not get an external DVD drive.   Can I load Win 7 via my MBP's HD in either Lion or Win 7.   Or can I put the DVD files on a separate HD and have it boot from that (not sure if that is possible)
    OR....
Should I just fork out another $79 for a DVD drive?

Yes you can, you can even have 2 users on the Windows side, his n hers

  • Installing Windows 7 on MBP from USB key?

    Hello all,
I've searched all around the internet, but I just can't seem to find a straight answer to this question:
Is it possible to install Windows 7 on an MBP with a USB key? Before you answer, read my process to see where I'm having trouble.
I want to install the Windows 7 beta on my MBP, but DVD media isn't available to me. I do, however, have a 4gb USB key. I've formatted the key with my XP install (through Parallels) to be bootable, and loaded the Windows 7 install on it. When I tried to use Boot Camp, the assistant asked me for a CD/DVD, so I figured that option is out.
My next attempt was to install rEFIx, which did show the USB key as a viable boot option, and even let me select the efi file to boot the Windows 7 installer. However, when I try to load it, I get a complaint:
    Starting legacy loader
    Using load options 'USB'
Error: Not Found returned from legacy loader
The firmware refused to boot from the selected volume. Note that external hard drives are not well-supported by Apple's firmware for legacy OS booting.
So now I am stuck. Can anyone offer me any advice regarding this matter? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Windows normally cannot be installed nor boot from a USB or any external drive. This is a Windows problem. There are methods for installing and booting Windows from USB devices, but you will need to do some searching to find sites that detail the process. It's not likely you'll find much on Windows 7 because it's beta software, and not supported for installation on a Mac.
