Advice on Linux financial software

What do people recommend for home budgeting financial software on Linux and why do you think it stacks up better than others? (KMyMoney2 and Gnucash 2.0 are both in the Arch Linux repositories, and others are ready to be installed in the user supported repositories.) I'm just curious on how people feel about these packages, what there experiences have been like, are they stable, and so on.

I made it up from scratch, it isn't anything fancy though. Here is a quick explanation of what it is:

I then have a sheet that gives me the current balance for each account, and then adds the current accounts (I have two), adds the savings accounts (I have two also), and subtracts the credit card balances, and gives me a final grand total.
The final sheet is a chart, and what I do is every Monday, I enter the current balance of each account. This way, I can see where my money is going on a weekly basis (weekly is enough for me) and I can see if I'm spending too much

Hi. I'm a graphic design freelancer and I need to purchase some sort of financial software for the mac. I need to create invoices, track charges, and even track my personal charges as well. Can anyone recommend the best software? I know quickbooks is available, but I'm not sure how great this program is. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

This is a bash on Quicken reply. I have struggled with Quicken (currently Q07) for many, many years (back into the 90's). I counted 13 different sets of Quicken datasets which have been left hanging on my various hard drives over these years as I found out through different support calls that I would have to discard a corrupted database and start over.
Last year, I was told by Quicken support during a call I paid for that I had too many accounts and the database was too large. (This has been a common tech support comment for me) I've only tried to use Quicken for personal finance tracking, no securities tracking and the heavier features (thank goodness). The call ended with an all too familiar bottom line which was that the backups were all bad so they didn't help. The support person couldn't figure out how I could utlize the backup data so in the end, I re-entered the previous year so that I could get my taxes done and search for another program. I've researched enough to know I was lucky to not move to Quicken Express as was once advised. Apparently that software doesn't allow an export in the event you would find a different software.
The good news is that I just upgraded to Mountain Lion. As you may know, Quicken in any version does not work with this OS. I've finally found a perfect reason staring me in the face to never struggle to use Quicken again. Now to find a better option. Money has many features that seem like what I need for handling 5 or 6 bank accounts and credit cards. Has anyone experienced SEE software? It too seems to have decent features.

Financial software for personal use?

I just bought my blackberry bold yesterday and I'm not sure which financial software to use.
Has anyone used Ascendo or any of the other money management programs? Which ones do you prefer?
I'm looking for something that's more for personal use than business expenses etc.

You mean Quicken '07, I assume? There is no Mac version of Quicken '08. I use both Quicken '07 and MoneyDance. The latter is still rough around the edges, but I support it since I'd like to see some real competition in the field given Intuit's legendary second-class treatment of Mac users and the Mac platform (charging more for less features and almost never fixing bugs).
Plus I think it's slimy to intentionally BREAK online features after a version is three years old like Quicken does. I fully understand desupporting an old version, but intentionally disabling functionality (in the consumer software world) is just crummy on another level. I've also used the beta of the replacement for Quicken '07, and it's pretty lousy so far.

Financial Software

I am looking for financial software for the mac. Is there software that will import my Microsoft Money (.mny) files directly? What is best financial software to keep checking and other accounts in order?

If Microsoft Money can export to tab delimited text files, that would be best, because then, you can import into any spreadsheet, including http://www.neooffice.org/
The advantage of spreadsheets is that formatting is completely user customizable, and the accuracy of the calculations are never in doubt. The problem with using money specific software, is that in many cases, it will not allow you to create accounts from scratch, having to import from incompatible banks, and open you up to the security issues of showing money data over the internet of your accounts. Quicken required a lot of customizing for features it tried to autocomplete when it rounded data the wrong way, and it just was a pain for me. I finally settled for using everything on a spreadsheet.

Best financial software for Intel Macs

I see to my disgust that Intuit just released a new version of Quicken that is not universal binary. That being the case, what is the best home financial software for Intel Macs?

Just to be sure I am understanding you - you are saying you are miffed because Quicken missed the chance to go Universal Binary. That is understandable, but I just wanted to make sure you knew that it still runs on Intel macs.
I am running the newest release on my Macbook and to be honest Quicken just isn't one of those apps that is going to benefit from more speed.
My frustration has always been that Quicken dumbs down the functionality for the Mac version. Still the case with this last release.
That said, Quicken is still the best buy for my money (sorry couldn't resist!) and runs well via on the Intel macs.
The best solution and the one I am moving toward is to load XP on Parallels and run the PC version of Quicken that way.
Best of all worlds I would say.

Looking for Financial Software?

Does anyone have a good financial software program for new Macbook? have used Quicken for years to track investments but the Quicken Essentials for Mac doesn't do the job. Any ideas?

I just downloaded my Quicken for Mac 2007 files to iBank. The download worked OK though some of my Quicken categories, subcategories and money amounts got mangled. I had to go back to Quicken (which I did not trash) to correct the problems.
I'm not overly happy with the choices of "Reports" available. I like to do "Category Summary" reports for tax purposes, etc. Unfortunately, iBank only provides "Detail Reports" and one of mine is 53 pages long; not very useful.
I'm 1 day into the 30 day trial. I'm not yet sold.

Linux & learning software. your tips/tricks/experiences w/ studying.

I'm a college/university student and find myself using my laptop a lot for studying lately. I use it mainly as a substitute for pen and paper so I'm wondering how I could make even better use of the PC/laptop while learning.
Enter thread. I'm really curious as to how you use/used linux while learning/studying.
Did you
* find learning software that generally helped you a lot with your learning experience?
* develop a particular organizational system for your documents?
Or maybe you found a very satisfying way to document lectures with LaTeX/OpenOffice and/or keep backups of all your documents?
One thing I found very useful over the last weeks is Dropbox. I always have 3 automatically synchronized copies of my documents (one on the homeserver/PC, one on my laptop and one on the Dropbox servers).
Personally, I'm studying law and when I was planning on using MS Windows I found that there exists a lot of probably very useful software. Among them a commercial application that would create a virtual filing system for documents that you could even automate to a certain extent (it could file with dates, field of law, name of lecture/professor et al). Another application would let you create virtual file/index cards, keep track of whether of not you learned them, when you learned them, if you got the answer right and it would also tell you when best to learn older cards again.
I never got to really test those apps because I didn't have a laptop back then.
Later I forgot about them and these days I just want to use (arch) linux as I'm so comfortable with it.
That's it from me for now. I'll try to find out if there are linux equivalents of the depicted software. If you already know some don't hesitate to tell me

I love learning languages and I have the following workflow:
I use an application called Anki. It is a spaced repetition software (SRS) that helps you remembering things. It has a nice community and the software itself is very effective. I think every student who has to remember for a long time what he learned (language learners, law or medical students for example) would find it extremely useful.
When I'm travelling by public transport I study my new material, make notes about it on my Android phone etc. I can keep my phone in sync with my desktop computer easily with Dropbox. I put the new material into Anki when I get home. I record the grammar points I studied in a LibreOffice spreadsheet and I also have a list of the grammar points I want to learn next. I always do my Anki repetition before putting in new grammar or vocab.
With this workflow for example I have learned more than 3000 Japanese characters in a little less than 5 months and I have no problem remembering them. I was also able to learn and remember thousands of words in a relatively short time and study grammar much much more effectively than I would have done in a normal language course.

NI488.2 linux driver software not working

I have installed and uninstalled and re-installed several times NI 488.2 driver for linux. Version 2.5 - in SUSE Linux 10.1.
When selecting troubleshooting, it says the software wasn't installed correctly and says to re-boot and install sofware again. The GPIB explorer sees the card, but I can't get past the troubleshooting box that says to reinstall the software. When I uninstall, the nikal and nipal do not totally uninstall. I looked at the knowledge database and followed the directions on uninstalling, however the UNINSTALL in the /usr/local/natinst/ni4882 directory do not exist, evan after I re-installed the driver again. I don' t know where to go from here to figure out why the software is not installed correctly. Can you direct me in the right direction to correct whatever problem may exist?

This is a screen capture of when I uninstall the driver. I've done this before. Apparently, it doesn't totally uninstall and I'm wondering if that has something to do with my installations not working properly. However, I get no errors when I install the driver. In answer to your other questions - the driver is running just fine on another linux machine. I believe there is something in my linux installation causing this, but I'm not quite sure what it is, and where to start poking around. I also believe the problem is in the installation of the sofware, not the hardware, since that is the error I receive.

I found a problem in the knowledge database about uninstalling earlier when I was attempting to fix this problem. It follows. I do not have uninstall scipts in these directories after installation of the software. So, I'm not sure if there's a problem in my installation, or if these just don't exist anymore. But, in any case, I can't uninstall everything.
This is what I saw in the knowledge base:

Uninstallation scripts ship with the NI-488.2 version 2.5 driver for Linux. The uninstallation is componentized, so you will have to run multiple scripts if you wish to completely remove the driver from your system. To uninstall NI-488.2, run the following commands as root:

/usr/local/natinst/ni4882/UNINSTALL-util
/usr/local/natinst/ni4882/UNINSTALL-driver
Additionally, NI-KAL as well as an additional NI support library are installed with NI-488.2 version 2.5 but may be required by other NI programs. If you do not need any additional NI software, run the following uninstallation scripts:
/usr/local/natinst/nikal/bin/UNINSTALL
/usr/local/natinst/nipal/bin/UNINSTALL

The NI-488.2 installer also installs the LabVIEW Runtime Engine. Depending on the Linux distribution, you will need to either remove this via RPM or by deleting the shared object from /usr/local/lib.
So, still looking for more suggestions. I have attempted all you said to do. And still have the same problem.

Need Advice on Multisession burning software

What financial software would you recommend?

I just migrated from a PC (Windows 7) to a MBA. I have about 3 years of Quicken 2004 data in QDF format and I'm looking to get them imported into a reliable and solid financial program. I've heard that Quicken Essentials and Quicken for Mac are pretty much horrible so I guess that route is a no go.
Here are the features I need:
Ability to import QDF files
Ability to customize categories
Ability to add bank accounts/investment accounts/asset and liability accounts
Ability to backup and export data
That's what I'm looking for right now.
Now, I'm deciding between Mint and iBank:
Mint
- free (can't beat that)
- has supposedly rave reviews
- doesn't have customizeable reviews
- can't import old Quicken data
- everything stored online so potential risk there
- inability to backup/download data
iBank
- at a first glance, can do everything I need
- but is expensive ($60)
- and user reviews are quite "meh" (3/5) stars
Well, what are your thoughts and is there any other software that I should consider?

Quicken Essentials is reported as horrible; Quicken for Mac - not so much!
Depending on how you use your Windows version, Quicken for Mac may be just fine for your needs.
For $15, why not just try it:

You will have to EXPORT your Windows Accounts in QIF and then set them up in Mac and then import the QIF file.
You could always continue with Quicken for Windows with Windows installed in Bootcamp or Parallels.

DI XI Rel.2 is out of Support and you cant download it anymore. I would recommend you migrate to Data Services XI 3.2 or attend the Ramp- Up for Data Services 4.0
Maybe you contact your SAP Sales Rep. for both steps.
