Advice on Linux support for some chipsets (or vice versa :) )

I'm considering to buy a new Core 2 CPU and the P35 chipset is recommended by many, but experienced only with Windows. I read for lots of troubles with the ICH9 (kernel crashes etc) over the net. I want also to make an RAID 1 or 5, depending on my finances :0
So I wonder if someone who has some relevant experience could give me a piece of advice about what chipset to choose.

Moved to Kernel & Hardware.

Is it possible to add in kernel's PKGBUILD patch http://www.linuxant.com/alsa-driver/als … 19-3.patch for improving support for Conexant chipsets and the HSF driver?

You better file a bug report for it: http://bugs.archlinux.org/

The new functions were relatively late additions, therefore they could not be added to the User Guide. They are addressed in the Release Notes. The most current version of the Release Notes can be found attached to the top post in this thread:

  • Creative silently trying to drop support for some X-FI products?

I intended to look for any updates on their support page but to my surprise the X-FI Platinum (yes, the one with hardware decoding of various 5. formats) was not listed anymore. Though I found it through: 'If your product is not listed above, please click here.' at the very bottom. So we got an official Windows 7 driver with this, and other cards, that increases shutdown time with up to 5 minutes for 9 months, and now this? I am close to being speechless.
So just to be clear here, I am not saying they are, I am saying what it starting to point towards. It doesn't inspire confidence or quality at all and on top of the last few years it's just too much. Sadly Creative seems to think they don't want customers that know how things work. We're too much trouble and not easy enough cashcows? But the only thing we want is are bug fixed and stable working drivers in operating system Creative has announced to support. Granted I understand that this may not be easy, but don't announce support for products you cannot get to work 00% your selfs.
Thank you for the efforts Creative, but it's fallen short and only almost working so far in Vista and W7. I don't see how anyone should buy your products with the quality (I've tested a few things more then just your sounds cards) you're aiming for if this is Creatives answer to it's consumers.

    Well said.
I'm sick and tired of Creative. No response - no new drivers - nothing but silence. Maybe it's time to get the media on this. Maybe that will force Creative to come with some sort of statement about their lack of support.
I can think of several news media that might find this situation very interesting!.
Unfortunately, I don't think even media attention can move Creative to do anything about anything except make more hollow promises.
Remember all the media attention surrounding the Daniel_k incident in March/April 2008 It woke Creative up for a little bit, they made a bunch of vague promises, and now they are back to sleep again.
Guess you're right but it seems like a much bigger story than the Daniel incident.
The Daniel_K incident wasn't solely about Creative stepping on a community driver modder, it was also about the years of neglect Creative had towards their sound card users. Those years of neglect had the effect of building a silent anger towards Creative amongst it's user base, we were all ready to blow, we just needed a spark. The letter from Creative to Daniel K was that spark.
Sort of like how WW started...

  • Linux support for SB Live 24 bit on my MSI K8N SLI Plati

With my motherboard MSI K8N SLI Platinum I've an integrated SB Li've 24 bit that however has one jack for MIC and one different for LINE-IN.
This is GREAT, however under Linux my LINE-IN doesn't work, due to lack of informations to how to implement this feature.

not only yes. but heck yes. I use D.) All of the above on every AVR micro I have (including the ATmega168).  sparkfun.com has a really good tutorial for getting started. I suggest it. (it is a windows tutorial, but the exact same software works the same on any PC.) One benefit of this tutorial is that it provides a fantastic skeleton makefile for all of your future AVR programming needs.
oh yeah, and AVRFreaks.com is another really good resource.  I do quite a bit of work with AVR micro's. so if you ever have any specific questions feel free to PM me.

  • Access linux file system from windows and vice versa

    Friends
Do anyone of you have any idea about how to access linux file system from windows using java. Thanx in advance.
    Regards
    Rakesh

"Accessing" is vague. Do you want to read? write? Both?
Here are two ways I'll mention.
    1. Write an ftp client for the "cleint" computer. I beleive java has some framework functions for doing this.
    2. Write java RMI client and server to open, read or write, and close a file. Pass a byte array parameter containing each block of data.

  • Screen automatically darkens, the flashes then darkens again and stays dark for a while and vice versa.....can anyone help or do I need to send it in for a check?

Hi, please would some one help? My screen, usually after I have moved my macbook pro, suddenly darkens and the lightens and flashes beteen the two sometimes for long periods of time...I've tried to calibrate and turn off the ambient lighting adjustment but this doesn't help as the screen remains darkened. Is this a solvable problem or should I send it in for repair?

  • Nokia PC Suite support for Outlook and Thunderbird

    Hi,
I am currently using the Microsoft Outlook 2007 combined with Nokia PC Suite to synchronize the contents of the Outlook with my Nokia N73 smartphone. I am now considering to switch e-mail client from Microsoft Outlook to the Mozilla Thunderbird. So my question is then, is Nokia PC Suite compatible with Mozilla Thunderbird?
I have in fact already installed Thunderbird, but it is not available as an option anywhere in the settings for Nokia PC Suite. All I can find in the Nokia PC Suite settings is a tab called "Microsoft Outlook" where I can choose the different Outlook profiles or change settings. In my humble opinion there should be a new tab added called "Thunderbird" or similar right next to the "Microsoft Outlook" tab in the settings for Nokia PC Suite after installing another e-mail client such as the Mozilla Thunderbird.
I know that there is this option to choose what e-mail client to use upon installing Nokia PC Suite, where I have chosen Outlook. Does this mean that I have to reinstall Nokia PC Suite to get this choice to choose e-mail client to use? If I do reinstall Nokia PC Suite, will I even get to this option at all? Since I am only reinstalling Nokia PC Suite and it is already configured once to be used with Outlook, I'm thinking that maybe this option will not even appear upon reinstalling Nokia PC Suite.
I don't have a clear memory of it but I think I once reinstalled Nokia PC Suite for some reason and I was not presented with this option to choose e-mail client as the first time I installed it. So this may require complete uninstallation and deletion of files and Windows registry for Nokia PC Suite, and then a fresh installation of it to get to this window where to choose e-mail client.
Even when and if I get to that window, it's no guarantee that I will be able to choose Thunderbird even thou it's installed. Why? Because I know from experience that commercial and proprietary software like Nokia PC Suite tends to only support the industry standard platforms and systems and applications, or de-facto industry standards like the extensively used Microsoft Outlook and other Microsoft products. I know by experience that such software as Nokia PC Suite love to lick Microsoft's **bleep**. Don't you think?... or don't you know? You disagree? Well lay it on me, tell me what you think!
I would love to be able to synchronize my mobile phone with my computer, even if I may use a Linux or other nix-like operating system. But if Nokia PC Suite doesn't even support e-mail clients other then Microsoft Outlook, such as the Thunderbird, then it's probably too much to ask for a Linux support for Nokia PC Suite. Or is it?... does Nokia PC Suite support Linux?...

    Thanks for your answers!
By this time I have made a clean install of Windows Vista at least three times, and on one occasion I remembered to check this this thesis of mine that I mentioned above. So for the purpose of testing if it's true that the Nokia PC Suite installation process or Nokia PC Sync configuration wizard does not present the user with the option to choose Mozilla Thunderbird as e-mail client, I have done the following.
I have made a completely clean, out of the box installation of Windows Vista on the computer (retail version, non-custom branded Vista version). After installing the needed and important drivers for the system and other software required for the proper operation of the system and few other software, I went on installing Microsoft Office with Outlook 2007 as one of the first software applications. Then I installed Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Thunderbird. After I had done that, I installed the Nokia PC Suite.
As my thesis predicted, after successfully installing Nokia PC Suite and the Nokia PC Sync configuration wizard was started, I was not presented with the option to choose Mozilla Thunderbird as my e-mail client, even thou both Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird were installed prior to or before Nokia PC Sync. In other words, if this was a limitation of the Nokia PC Suite or it's installer, where it does not recognize e-mail clients that are installed after Nokia PC Suite itself, then installing the e-mail clients in this order should make Nokia PC Suite recognize it. But it did not, or at least as long as the Mozilla Thunderbird is concerned. Thus, this proves my thesis - Nokia PC Suite is currently not compatible with Mozilla Thunderbird. And Mobile Sensei Petrib confirms this also.
Here follows a screenshot of the actual Nokia PC Sync configuration wizard.
    http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/9803/nokiapcsyncsd3.jpg
I'm afraid we will have to bear with this. I personally don't believe that there will ever be any official release of Nokia PC Suite that will have full support (or any at all) for other e-mail clients then just Microsoft Outlook and Lotus, or that there will be any official Linux or nix-like version of it. Not today, not in next five years, and not in one thousand light-years from today. We can hope, but the odds are pointing in the opposite direction.
So bear with Microsoft Outlook, and the Windows **bleep**. No pay, no play! Unfortunately... fortunate for Microsoft, Nokia, and others alike, but unfortunate for us end users.

  • Support for Olympus E-M5 Mark II

Lightroom 5.7 isn't recognising RAW files from the new Olympus E-M5 Mark II. Has anyone found a solution please?
    GIna

That hypothetical GM truck that might not be usable at all due to lack of fuel availability is not a good analogy for a new camera such as the E-M5 II, which (while it waits for Lightroom support) performs perfectly fine when producing jpeg files and even can manage to function by having the ORF files processed in Oly Viewer (provided gratis by Oly). BTW, if Oly (and other camera makers) sold cameras as though they were "intended to work" in 3rd-party software such as Lightroom, they'd probably not be keeping the details of their raw demosaicing under proprietary wraps. If you have a gripe with that  (proprietary raw) state of affairs. then I'm with you. But it seems the finger pointing should be at the camera manufacturers, not Adobe (unless you know something Adobe could be doing --but is not-- to change the way things work).
I received my E-M1 back in October 2013 (more than a month after it had begun shipping) and I seem to recall that the E-M1's supporting Lr update (5.3) came in December.  I was pleasantly surprised...just a 6-week wait. Others (earlier adopters) had been waiting nearly 3 months. Does that make it "right"? Eh, no one twisted anyones arm to buy when they (and I) did.
Finally, even if Adobe had support for our new camera ready just hours after the model was introduced, I think they'd be justified in deciding to delay (at least somewhat) any Lr update until they could also  include support for some number of other, recently issued models. Getting a timely ( and probably unique) update for every new camera would be nice, and perhaps it would actually happen for certain CaNikon models; but it doesn't seem practical with new cameras coming along "thick and fast". I certainly  don't expect any special treatment my Oly digicams, with their very modest market share.

  • A video codec or support for a compressed format (ZEN

i was wondering if creative could include support for some form of compressed video format in the next firmware release for the Creative Zen V Plus. i ask this as the supplied video converter uses incredibly large amounts of space even for a small video file since the avi is uncompressed (afaik)
could support possibly be added for wmv or something as that is relati'vely small and it would be great if the player could support it.
please reply as this is a very common 'issue' for most owners of this mp3 player.

PSE 4 does do 16 bit - although there are a limited number of things you can do at that depth.
It has essentially no support for actions.
