Advice on monitor purchase

I'm about to purchase a second display for use with my 27" imac in order to expand my work space.  Though the Apple Thunderbolt display is beautiful to look at, I don't need the iSight camera and I'm seeing several other monitors with the same if not better specs for the price.  I'd like some advice on whether to get the Apple Display, or if there are specific displays that can be suggested instead.  thanks in advance.

The email notification for your reply came in JUST as I was about to order the U2713HM.  It's still available and actually on sale at best buy for ~$200 less.  The Asus you mentioned was the only other competitor that was leaving me wondering.  I'm glad you specified that the stand quality is cheap.
I've read a couple reviews from customers that say there is an nnoying amount of ghosting when dragging windows around on the Dell.  Have you experienced this?  Will the Dell sit nicely next to my iMac's display?  Any other sepcifics you can give would be very much appreciated.  Thanks again!

  • Monitor purchasing advice for a MacPro owner.

    Hello everyone!
I want to purchase a new Apple 27" Display. Obviously I would like to buy a Thunderbolt display as it seems the LED display will be on its way out as soon as a TB MacPro is released. When they do release a MacPro with TB I am planning on buying one as I'm way past due on an update.
If I buy the TB display today I have no way of connecting it to my current MacPro. My MacPro has a DVI connection. From what I see there is no way to connect a TB display to my Mac since it doesn't support TB. So means I have no option but to buy the LED version of the monitor and run an adapter (like the Atlona AT-DP400) since my MacPro only has 2 DVI ports.
Once again, here's where the problem arises. When they do release a MacPro with TB (keeping my fingers crossed there will be one out late next year), how will I be able to use this LED monitor? I run a duel-monitor set-up. If I buy a TB monitor next year with the new Macpro I won't be able to use it since from what I understand you cannot plug the LED monitor into the back of the TB monitor and expect it to work.
So what to do? What is the best buying advice you could give someone in my situation? I had one of my 23" Cinema Displays die on me so I'm in the market for a display right away. I do Graphic Design so color is very important (so I don't want to buy a used 23" to get me by till a new MacPro is released since the color does degrade as time goes by.)
Also, what are your thoughts on a new MacPro? I know Apple stated they have something planned for late next year. Would it be rediculous to hope that it has 2 TB ports where I could plug a TB display into one and the LED into the other? Or is that just impossible as TB is suppose to be used as a daisychain? I don't know too much about TB. This is where opinions are welcome as I know that nobody knows what Apple has in store for the new MacPro.
I'm frazzled and want to make sure I spend my $999 wisely. Thank you so much in advance for your help.

That would be fantastic, I'll keep my fingers crossed as well. My current MacPro (6 years old) just isn't working very well with CS6 Photoshop (guess the ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512 MB isn't really supported.) Anyhow, thought it would be best to hold out until we see a MacPro with Thunderbolt before I buy a new one.
These new 27" Displays sure are nice though. I'm running it along side my 23" Cinema Display. Like people have mentioned, the glare is a bit distracting since I have windows behind me, but overall I'm very happy with it. I only wish I could set the resolution of the two monitors so when I drag a window from one monitor to the other the size of the window would stay the same.
    Thanks for your input!

  • First external monitor purchase. Need advice.

I am considering buying an external monitor for my Macbook. The monitor in question has a VGA input and a DVI-D input.
    1. Which is better: VGA or DVI-D ?
    2. I found Macbook to DVI-D and Macbook to VGA adapters. Unfortunately, these adapters are only 6 inches long.
    3. As I have never purchased a computer monitor before, I do not know if lcd monitors come with pc-to-monitors cables. In other words, are pc-to-monitor cables sold separately?
    4. If pc-to-monitor cables are sold separately, could anybody recommend a good place to buy pc-to-monitor cables ?
    Thanks in advance.

Your computer has mini-DVI then. MiniDisplayport is on the latest white MacBook.
The display port is to the right of the USB port in both images.
    Here's a link for the mini-DVI:

  • HT3964 connected new external monitor to macbook pro, was working but now have no power, black screen in laptop. monitor purchased with advice from tech and set up also. Worked fine for an hour and then quit

Have just connected a viewsonic external monitor to macbook pro 10.6.8, had everything up and running fine for about an hour then the macbook quit. No power (ws running off power source) Have I killed my macbook? Help!

    Aha, all is good.
    I went to Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Displays
    and to home/Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Displays
and deleted all SyncMaster.icc files. I did leave behind one SyncMaster file in the home/../Displays which had an old date and I new was ok.
Rebooted, plugged in SyncMaster, and a new icc file was automatically created in the /Library/../Displays folder.
    My display works normally, now.

  • Monitor Purchase Advice

About to upgrade to a new G5 (QuadCore or the Mid Range Model) It's also time to get a new monitor... Appreciate all feedback.
Would like to keep price to about $1000, Need:
    21" or better,
very good (out of box) color translation (monitor to local Desktop printers),
and excellent text clarity (My eyes are goin bleary).
Good Manufacturer support a big plus
Don't care if CRT or LCD (quality more important)
    thanks in advance,
    xandra

I just upgraded from an old white frame Apple LCD to this:
    http://www.viewsonic.com/products/desktopdisplays/lcddisplays/proseries/vp2130b/ #specs
I don't have it yet but will post a review for you once I get it and test it compared to my old Apple LCD, if you'd like.
This Viewsonic monitor can be found for under $1000 and if the specs are "True" they are a good run at the Apple Display. I'll post a review once I hook up the monitor and try it for a few days...I chose ground shipping because it was Free so give me a few days to post a review. The only loss is that I won't have a power button or prefs button on the monitor anymore because this monitor is DVI. I still can do the screen rotation with the ATI software but not with the Viewsonic software.
Something to look at though, Good Luck in your search.

  • Seeking advice - Walk-in purchase of iphone 4?

    Hi All,
I currently own the iphone 3G and when I got it, I waited in line at my local AT&T store for a couple of hours and ended up having to order it, but received it in a few days. That being said, I haven't had much too much experience with huge launches and being a walk-in customer hoping to purchase an iphone on the 24th.
I was hoping you all might have some advice about where you think I should try. The closest Apple store is 1.5 hours away, so I wasn't really planning on going there. I have a Best Buy, 2 radio shacks, 2 Walmarts, and 2 AT&T stores. I plan to call each of them on Wednesday to see if they have any idea if they'll even have phones available for walk-ins, but where would you all suggest trying to obtain a phone on the 24th? I know it's a long shot anywhere I go, but I was hoping people might have more experience or even some educated guesses about who would get more of the product? There has to be some kind of rhyme or reason, right? LOL
Thanks in advance for the help!

well AT&T stores are out of the question since they pushed back the walk in date to the 29th.

    Hi,
Check your outbound queue in SMQ2 if the error is there for more details. pricing error is related with the IPC so check if your IPC destinations are working in SM59.

  • Need advice on monitors

I am trying to purchase a monitor that will work with a MacBook Pro Retina (current model) and I am completely confused. I've seen people like the Dell Ultras or hate them. People complaining about lag time, etc. I just want a display that will give me 2560 x 1440, and I can surf the Net, do word processing, look at video and some very non expert working with photos. I may end up with an Air again, but I'm buying the monitor first, so I want to handle any possible future. I have the late 2012 iMac 27" right now, so something comparable without paying an arm and a leg.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    hey there,
ther are lots of options for studio monitors. how much do you plan to spend? "project-studio" type monitors start around $300.00/pr. & go up to about $1200.00/pr. Pro monitors start around $1600.00/pr. & go to $3,000.00+/pr.
i have a pr. of Alesis M-one MKii. i wouldn't use monitors w/ less than a 6.5 inch woofer & 60 watt amp to drive it. check out your local pro audio/music store.
    good luck.

  • Advice needed on purchase please!

OK so I plan on making the switch to Mac! Using an old PC desktop right now and plan on getting a portable. The Mac will be my main computer for everyday activities like email, word processing, internet, but I also want to record with it. I plan on getting an Apogee Duet to use with a couple condenser mics and record acoustic guitars and vocals. I'll start with Garageband and hopefully graduate to Logic Express or Logic one day. I don't play games but I do have lots of photos to import onto the Mac and would do general photo editing on them. I also want to take advantage of iMovie and iDVD with little video clips. So...is the Macbook (black one) sufficient or do I need the MBP for what I plan to do? I don't want to spend the extra money if I don't need to...
Second thing - every forum/website I have looked at all highlight the same problems with the MB and MBP - disc drives sticking, fan and overheating issues, faulty displays and so on. It's got me second guessing my purchase but I really want the Mac to record with, and I'm sick of Windows. I realize every computer is not perfect but from what I can tell there is an enormous amount of dissatisfaction with these issues. What's more is that people actually seem to acknowledge the problems but oddly many seem to accept them just because it's an Apple. I really don't want to shell out so much money to experience a major problem after a few weeks of use. I live in a rural area and taking it to a store is not really doable for me.
    Any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
This is a troubleshooting forum. Therefore the majority of the issues you see here are due to the rare lemon, and people still facing a learning curve with computers not knowing what they are doing which may create more issues than solve them. Most people with Macs are very satisfied and don't see these issues. People are too quick to blame the computer or the operating system when the issue is they are doing repairs to systems that otherwise are not broken and then breaking them in the process. If they had just followed some simple rules issues like these would not happen.
So the best thing to do when migrating you to the Mac is to get you started on the right step. If you want to have room to upgrade to Logic Pro a MacBook Pro is probably wiser than a MacBook. You'll have more expansion room in terms of peripherals. The lack of an Express/34 port and a Firewire 800 port really weaken the strength of a simple MacBook when it comes to people in the audio and video editing industry. It is nice to be able to add drives to different buses so editing is faster. Express/34 SATA/II cards are even faster than USB or Firewire when adding an external hard drive.
In the beginning a MacBook is not a bad option, but given where you want to go, don't cheat yourself by only getting a MacBook.

  • Advice needed on purchasing a DVD burner

I'm looking to purchase a used or a new external DVD burner as my eMac came with a CD-RW optical drive, and I would like to ask for your help/advice. Which burners as well as authoring and burning software are considered to be "the best?" (Ideally the burner would come with authoring and burning software.) Any particular vendors I should look into? Thank you for your time.

When I added a DVD+/-R/W to my office Quicksilver G4, I picked a LaCie P5 Porsche from Small Dog Electronics; comes with Toast, easy to set up, and works fine.

  • Need advice on iMac purchase

    Hello all,
Here I am, still sitting on my Late 2006 iMac that has ran flawlessly since I got it.  I'm updated to 10.7, but as you all know that's as far as I'm going with the OS on this machine.  I was going to pick up a new Mac earlier this year, but decided that I had better wait until the new ones were announced in October.  Since the October release announcement and going back and forth, I've decided that the removal of the optical drive from the new units, at least for now, has steered me away from them.  I'd also like to see how the super-thin design pans out in the long run.  I'm not entirely confident in knowing that much hardware is seated so closely to the screen - seems like a bad idea.  But, I'm not an engineer and the folks at Apple usually tend to be a little smarter than me at these things, so time will tell I suppose.
I've considered purchasing the Mid-2011 27" model from the refurbished end, but I've been reading some concerns about them.  Yellowing screens, screens mysteriously going blank and some sort of dust collecting anomaly.  Am I missing anything commonly complained about on these??  I think this computer is a better fit for me, but I'm curious to hear about others' experiences with refurbished products from Apple.  They offer the same warranty as a new machine, but I'm guessing that many of these refurbished units are going to be returns from the before-mentioned issues.  I'm wondering if they may have them panned out.  I suppose there isn't much that can be done about dust collecting behind the screen, but the yellowing and screen going blank should be fixable issues without re-engineering (it would seem).
As you can likely tell from my 2006 iMac still being in use, I don't have a huge demand for resources, but I like to be up to date.  Some light video compiling (family stuff), somewhat more intensive photography (Photoshop) and regular e-mail and web are basically the extent of my uses.  Some gaming might occur on occassion, but I usually stick to my consoles for that.
Considering my concerns and uses, would the refurb May 2011 27" be a good move for me?  Or shall I perhaps consider a Mac Mini with an external display instead?  Mac Pro would be nice, but I'm not dropping that kind of cash for a computer at this time.  I like the small footprint of the iMac.  I can make do with a Mini.  Hadn't considered it before now.  Thanks in advance for any suggestions.  I just like to run these types of questions by the community before I make a purchase.  Points are usually raised that I hadn't previously considered.

The iMac is a very good all-purpose machine, and I purchase just about all of my Macs refurbushed. The reliability is at least as good as a new machine, with the same warranty.
About "yellowing screen." This is a relatively rare situation, and should be immediately detectable. Your only option would be to return the unit as defective; the replacement would, hopefully, remedy the problem. Reject any unit that doesn't look outstanding.
I also believe that it's best to wait a year until the super-thin iMacs roll out the kinks, but I'm not as bullish about using a Mini with an external monitor. A regular iMac will likely have a more balanced mix of features, which will be ideal with your modest needs. A refurb 2011 iMac is a good machine that's easy to like.
Honestly, I'm not familiar with the dust issue.

  • Need Advice WRT iPod Purchase - Which Model?

I've never considered buying an iPod before, but I've been making a lot of business trips by car in the past couple of years, so having music to play all long the way would be A Good Thing. But, which model to buy???
I don't think I'll have the need to play videos, but I like the idea of having an info screen. I'm not sure the Shuffle is for me, because I'd like to have more control over what's playing and what to play next. But I can't imagine having more than 6 or 10 albums stored at any given time. My tastes in music just aren't that broad.
However, I have thought about the option an 80GB iPod would give me. That is, I could copy all of the installer disc images for all of the Final Cut Studio discs and the latest updates to the OS and support apps. Then when I'm on a Final Cut system support call, I'd have all the files I'd need in a very small package, rather than a large firewire drive.
    So, advice anyone? Thanks.

Thank you. Yes, I'm familiar with that type of FW drive. That would be buying two new devices. Not out of the question, but if I could get by with one, it would be a bonus.
The iPod nano, huh? I assume the display on those will help me see what's playing and what song I can choose to play next, right?

  • Advice asked  for purchasing an intel iMac

    Hello, everybody,
after 4.5 years i'm up to my next iMac, and have a question for advice: with my last iMac (G5, 1.8 GHz) i had a troubled relationship: after 18 months, it started to behave badly, and had two logic board exchanges within a very short time. Thanks to Apple, they were made under a LB replacement programme, so no cost for me (well, the replacement needed for several weeks when my iMac was in "hospital" was at my charge...) Now, the PSU shows signs of weakness... for my taste too early.
I know many others had problems with this model (and with the PSU), after all, Apple launched a fairly vast replacement programme.
My question: how is the Intel iMac? Is it similar to the old G5, or is it more reliable? i love the design of the iMac, the quality of its screen, and the system altogether - but would like to avoid a similar experience.
Any comment would be greatly appreciated.
    thomas

    Hi, Kenichi,
thanks for your comment. I installed everything of my old iMac on the new one i got yesterday night, and it seems to be a still nicer machine. Also the old G5 machine was nice, but had these stupid logic board problems, which caused me some severe problems 2 years ago. but since the LB got replaced (twice) by Apple under their exchange programme, not the normal warranty, it was running again very nicely. I hope that this intel machine is doing it the same way, and without need for changing hardware...
I thought the G5 was a slim machine, but the new one is even slimmer... Great!
    Thanks again for responding.
