Advice on moving from workgroup to domain for very small network

Hello all,
I work for a small company and inherited the part time IT/Operations position and I want to understand the impact of changing from workgroup to domain.  I understand the process and I have set up small test domains before but I want to be certain I
understand this so I figured I better ask the pros.
The setup:
1 Desktop class system, recent i5 quad, 16GB RAM, 1TB HD with Server 2008 R2.  Current roles are File Sharing and WSUS.
3 Desktops running Win 7 Home
1 Desktop with win 7 Pro
1 Laptop with Vista Home
1 Laptop with Win 7
1 Laptop with Win 8 Pro
I have configured all devices to uses the WSUS for updates as they wanted these managed and this seems to be the easiest way.
Right now all users have an account on the server that is used to map to their shares.  I know that the home versions cannot join to a domain and with this small of a network I don't want to join any device to a domain as we have only one server and
it would not be reasonable to add more servers.
The thing is they want to setup local sharing of calendars and contacts, etc.  I have 2010 exchange server and it is required to be on a domain.
The Questions:
Can the domain still "act" as a workgroup and users still connect to the shares and exchange without being joined to the domain?  What is the impact on performance for this server?  Will the home version users still be able to connect to
the shares (I assume yes) and to the exchange through outlook?  Is there a better way to achieve the workgroup features of exchange without using exchange and not subscribing to Office 365?  We do not have an internet domain name for this business.
Does this matter for setting up a domain?
Anything you can think of that I should consider please feel free.
Thank you all for your advice.

Hi Paul,
You are very welcome, I am very glad that my suggestions helped.
For your first question, in a domain, the Domain Controller clearly has much more tasks to perform than a work group server, while it also has more management options for an administrator to better control his/her client machines.
In addition, domain acts as a central management solution will reduce the work of the administrator. For an example, under workgroup mode, if we have multiple servers which have shared resources, we need to create the same user
accounts on each of them, while in a domain, we only need to create accounts once on the DC, then all the accounts can be recognized across the whole domain, no matter how many servers and client machines are within it.
For the second question, yes, single lable domain name is not recommended, but it is allowed. Single lable domains are supported in
Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Exchange 2010, while single label DNS name resolution is also possible.
However, there are other Microsoft and third-party products which don’t support
single lable domains. My suggestion is don’t use it while it will cause you trouble.

  • Any advice on moving from iPad 3 (WiFi) to iPad 4 (WiFi+Cellular)

My new iPad is on it's way and I want to make sure that all of the content I have on my current iPad will move over to my new iPad.
I just synced and backed up using iTunes 11 on my MacBook Pro running 10.8.2.  So will I just have to restore from that backup to my new iPad?
What about podcasts that I have in Instacast?  I have about 5 GB of unlistened to podcasts that I want to make sure move over without problem.
Both iPads are 64 GB models, so I'm not moving from / to a different size device.
I'm moving to the cellular model because where I work they block personal hotspots and do not have WiFi throughout the building.
My current iPad runs iOS 6.0.1.  Should I ensure the new one is also running that version before doing the restore?
Anything else I should watch out for?
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

It will not let you restore if the new 4th generation iPad has an older version of iOS than the one you wish to restore from. However, it should already come with the latest version. I would recommend using iCloud for your backups. You can read more here:

  • Best font for very small type

I am working on a small pocket book. Any suggestions for a font and size to get the most words on a page with high readability?
    Joel

Nomina makes the Italian phonebook really legible with very small characters.
French PTT choose a standard font in a small size and of course most of the oldies asked for the big book because the small one was quite impossible to use.
As far as I know, PTT dropped the small book.
Recognizing that they choose a sad font was too simple, they prefer to say: these oldies are old fashioned, they don't accept changes.
I know that Nomina is the property of the Italian company but was it really impossible to buy the rights of use?
Remember, we are the country which claims at the face of the world: "Impossible n'est pas Français".
With public administrations, "Impossible" is too often "Possible".
I don't know if these remarks are politically correct

    Hello,
I'm currently doing some lab exercises in Packet Tracer.
I'm trying to setup a small network with 2x 3560 switches and 3 vlans. 1 vlan for network management, one vlan for servers and one vlan for users.
I'm running into issues where my lab exercises don't seem to work properly, and i'm not sure what im doing wrong. I learn fairly well "by example" and was wondering if anyone can point me to some examples of such a setup.

  • Standalone APs vs. Lightweight APs for very small sites

    Hello,
I am proposing a solution for a small site with 3 APs.
My question is whether is worth to have Lighweight solution for such small sites or should I go for standalone APs. ...WLC significalntly increase the price....
    Gorazd

I agree with the IOS setup.
You can configure Wireless Domain Infrastructure to make all APs aware of each others and also to improve roaming times.
Please check this Discussion for examples:

  • Pci compliance for very small biz using mac and ipad

I run a very SMALL business. We have one MacBook an iPad and an iPhone. We run everything through a second party merchant card processor/software (mindbody). However, according to the PCI compliance survey I just finished, I am supposed to run quarterly internal scans for vulnerabilities. Does antivirus software do this?
Also, what firewall settings do I need on my mac to be PCI compliant?
I know this may be a very simple question, but the PCI survey assumes everyone has an IT department with a ton of policies and procedures. Trying to figure out how to be compliant as a super small business without all that infrastructure.

Anti-virus software would not do PCI vulnerability scanning. You need specialized software to do that. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend specific software. My wife's small business was wrestling with PCI issues some time ago, and they're currently not doing any kind of internal scans. I don't know why not. They do get scanned externally periodically, to look for vulnerabilities in their setup that could allow people outside their network to gain access.
PCI compliance is a scam anyway. It doesn't prevent the numerous breaches that so many high-profile companies have been facing lately, and you can bet they're dotting their i's and crossing their t's with respect to PCI compliance. They have the budget to do so.
Your Mac should not need the firewall on. That shouldn't affect PCI compliance, if the Mac is properly configured and does not have any services open in System Preferences -> Sharing.

Hi, Thank you for your response.
I am actually based in the UK (might be on the wrong forum?) - but I had a look at a custom built site here.
The following are specs that I can afford. I could go a little higher too. Do you think these are suitable? If not what should I change?
Thank you very much in advance. (The case is InWin Centinal Buc Black Gaming Case.)

  • App Fails Moving from Development to Prod for Identical Environments

    All,
I know everyone says* this but, we really need resolution to this problem ASAP. We are in a situation wherein APEX Applications are thoroughly QAed and then, only after being delivered to Production, the same JavaScript calls that succeeded in Dev are Failing in production.
    Some Facts:
    1. APEX Version  4.1.1.00.23 Both Environments
       A. Dev was taken to 4.1.1.00.23 via two patches (12920544 and 13331096)
       B. Production was installed as 4.1.1.00.23 directly
    2. DB Versions
        A. Dev - 11.2.0.1
        B. Prod - 10.2.0.4
    3. PL/SQL Web Toolkit
       A. Dev - 10.1.2.0.8
       B. Prod - 10.1.2.0.6 (Upgraded from 10.1.2.05 using supplied owa in APEX install media)
    4. Both using the Oracle HTTP Server from FUSION MIDDLEWARE 11g with mod_plsql plugin.
    The Issue:
Using Internet Explorer 9 (works for Chrome, Safari and FireFox), the following is an example of a JavaScript call that fails only in Production.
dropDownMenuDiv = document.getElementsByClassName("dropDownMenu") [0];I am sure someone will respond to this post stating that it just isn't possible that the same code is failing in one environment and not in the other. Therefore, to explicitly test this, I wrapped the above code in this "if" block:
    If (document.getElementsByClassName)
       dropDownMenuDiv = document.getElementsByClassName("dropDownMenu") [0];
    else
       alert( 'getElementsByClassName is NOT Supported' );
}The EXACT same code executed in Dev and Prod (app export/import). In Dev, it works fine. In Production, it produces the "getElementsByClassName is NOT Supported" message box.
I know that there are some IE Specific workarounds for just this sort of thing but, I also know that IE9 should support this method. In fact, it is supporting this very method when the application is invoked in the Dev environment.
Can anyone please provide a reason/work around for this issue?
    -Joe

I have done the comparison and the only thing that I see that differs is the session ID.

  • I am moving from London to NYC for a year, will i be able to use my iPhone over there and insert a pay as you go sim?

I wondered if anyone can advise me on whether its possible to use my iPhone in NYC by getting a pay as you go sim in the US? Do companies offer pay as you go sims over there as i wont have a credit rating.
    Thanks!

The only supported GSM carrier in the US is AT&T. They will not permit the use of pre-paid SIM cards in the iPhone.
You can sign up for monthly post paid service with them and use it just fine (assuming your existing phone is legitimately unlocked).
You can get pre-paid service with T-Mobile or any number of other regional GSM carriers, but not all features of the phone may work properly (or at all).

  • Moving from directly connected external drive to a network share.

I've looked around and can't find a page on how to do this. I have an external drive hooked up to my iMac. I am using it for TM backups, so I have this directory on it (Backups.backupdb). There are also 2 sparsebundle images due to 2 other people in the office using this drive for TM backups.
I am going to be moving this external drive to a mini we have here, which would mean I now need to take the Backups.backupdb directory and convert it into a sparsebundle image, since I'll now be backing up over the network.
Is there a way to do that? I would really like to preserve my backups since it's pretty important for my work.
    Thanks.

no, there isn't. you'll have to start a new backup sequence using a sparse bundle when you move the TM drive to a remote computer.

  • Advice for Building Small Network Question

    Hello,
I am building a small network environment which will connect to a larger office, scalability is important.  We will begin having about 30 users which will all need VOIP services.  The VOIP services will be hosted by a cloud provider.  My question is as of now I am looking to obtain a Cisco 2921 ISR Router and then a Cisco 2960-X 48Gig POE, and my main question is I am confident the switch can handle the power and operation of the phones but just to make sure I should not run into any problems with the router as far as forwarding the data, correct?  Any other comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Joe

  • How do i generate any signal for very small frequency

    Hi,
I want to generate a sinusoidal waveform at f=0.01 Hz, which is a quasi-steady regime in pipe flow and is very important to generate such a small frequency-flow for me. However, when I enter the value of 0.01 to the related frequency blank and run the program, it always fails and give the same error which can be seen in the attachment "f=0.01.jpeg". When I go through the place where the error generates, I can not see any problem???
My other problem is that:    For frequency range between f=0.05 Hz and f=0.1 Hz, I can generate the waveform, but the vi always detect the same frequency as 0.1 Hz. For all entering frequency values of 0.05, 0.06, 0.07 Hz,the program detects the same frequency of 0.1 Hz. But, after f=0.1 Hz, the program detect the correct frequency which is entered. i.e.,if I enter 1 Hz, the program detect 1 Hz after executation of the program or for f=10 Hz, it can detect the same frequency of 10 Hz.
Could you please help me for my two problems?

    Hi Kyle A.,
How can I eliminate the small vibration/perturbation on the sinusoidal signal as shown in the jpg file that I now attached? Could you please help me? I think it is due to electrical noise (power line noise of 60 Hz). Thank you again.

  • ITunes Match account when moving from France to USA.

    Hi guys,
I'm moving from France to California for work in a few month. I have a french iTunes account / iTunes Match account.
I was wondering how to transfert them as a US account (for iTunes account I'm pretty sure it's easy, but I don't really know for iTunes Match Account).
Thanks for you help and Hayppy New year

You cannot transfer iTunes Store accounts across stores. If you will wish to use the US store you will have to switch over completely and start using that store. iTunes Match will have to be canceled and re-subscribed if you switch stores. See this User Tip for more information: How to Change Country with iTunes Match

I searched the internet for tips on how to do it, however most of the threads are really old (we are using CS 5.1) or not very helpful.
That's why I hope the adobe community can give me some advice on how to set up bridge for a small company network (~20 people).
    What we want to achieve:
Bridge uses the stock photo folder located on our server
All photos have tags, if someone changes a tag the other users also see the changed tag
If a new photo is added to the server, it shows up in the bridge of all users
Not everyone in the company is using macs -> everything should work cross-platform, also for the windows users
Not essential but would be pretty helpful: Since 90% of our photos are from iStock, a way to read the tags from iStock and insert them into our photos.
I know that there are other programs which are better suited for the management of photos, however we want to rely on an Adobe product for it and since Lightroom does not seem to be a good choice, we look forward to using Bridge.
Maybe someone else in here also uses bridge for the photo management in their company or knows how to set it up for a network. If so, I would be very grateful for an answer!
