Advice on New Computer for Aperture

I was hoping to get some advice...I have been using Aperture for a few years. Now using v3. I currently have a MBpro and an Imac-both 3 years old. I use 3 managed  Aperture libraries - one that has all my travel, one for local work and one for an organization I work with. I just do better with 3 than one large. Right now I am at about 700GB and all 3 reside on a Rugged 1T drive. I backup to a 3T drive  and another 1T. So 3 copies in all...(A 4th copy for the 2 personal libs) I am not using Vaults. I do use Time Machine.
I do a lot of casual work in the living room on the MBP and I also use it when I travel or go out in the city. I do more serious editing on the 21" iMac. I move the Rugged between the laptop and iMac but it is now making me nervous as it disconnects too easily. I happen to be looking to upgrade my computer and am thinking of going to a one computer set up. A Retina 13" (which would be great for travel) and a desktop setup with a 27" monitor and keyborad etc. I will not be able to keep all the libaries on the laptop-(even if I max out with the 700GM flash memory, which is an expensive option.) But with 500 I could keep 2 on there. So, I would need to buy another portable drive if I want to continue to work in two places with access to all 3. Likely a Thunderbolt 2T if that exisists. At least with one computer I would not have to keep mounting and umounting the external drive-which seems to be causing issues. I am often getting Aperture messages for inconsistanceis - directly related to the Rugged drive unmounting by accident. I understnad my issue may be directly related to this particular Rugged drive/and or cable. It never has issues on the iMac-only the MB pro.
Can anyone speak to working between two locations and having to keep libraries on a portable drive? Aside from being nearly impossible to upgrade, is the Retina setup with an external  Thurderbolt monitor a smart one? Obviously I lose the glory of the R diplay when I do this.
If there  are other considerations for a 2 location setup, I am all ears.
Thanks!
NJ

I use both managed and reference libraries.
When I am working on a project between different computers, I maintain those on portable drives and they are managed libraries.  I just move the drives between different computers and open the library.  I could make them referenced.
Once I am done with the project, I import the library into my master library (I maintain a master library for each year), and once imported, I relocated my masters to a folder based system with a separate folder for each project.  I do this because it is easier to get to the master picture outside of the Aperture Library.  My current master libraries for the years 2011, 2012 and 2013 reside on an internal 2TB drive and I keep their size small by storing my referenced images on a Thunderbolt drive.  BUT, my libraries from 2001-2009 are stored on firewire drive with the images stored as referenced images on other firewire drives.
At the start of each year I create a folder structure on an external drive for storing my referenced images.  The top folder is the year called for example 2013 Pictures.  Inside this folder I create a series of folders, one for each month of the year plus Miscellaneous plus Misc Libraries.  I also add folders for things like the pictures I upload to Facebook, Photo.net, or the place I have things printed.  Inside each month of the year folder, as I complete projects, I create a folder with the project date (YYMMDD) and relocate the master files for the project to this folder.  This project folder can have subfolders, but I make sure it contains all of the working files related to the project.
Does this make any sense to you?

  • Is it better to set the admin account to other than myself on a new computer for security purposes?

    Hi all
On a new computer is it better to set the admin account to other than myself for security purposes? I am sure that I read some years ago that this was the best route to go down. What I am suggesting is that I will still administer the account but not as myself the user in my own name and also will it have any ramifications further down the line.
Will be using a new Macbook Pro running Lion (when it arrives)
With thanks in advance for any help and advice on this issue

when you get a new mac and set up an account, that account is designated as the admin account automatically.  Creating a second user account without admin privileges is fine to do, if you are afraid that you might accidentally do something harmful that requires admin access.  Make sure it is a second user account and not a guest account, as with a guest account, everything during a session under a guest account gets deleted after the session ends.

  • Ipad 2 or new computer for Garageband?  new home studio - Help

Any advice would be great.  I built a home studio loft in an old barn in my yard.  Problem is my main computer (imac) that I do all my work on has to stay in the house (we all use it - family)  SO .. I have to decide what to record on in the studio.  I have an ipad 2 ..  do I by the interface for it?  Use it to recoed, and then trasfer the garageband files /recordings from the ipad to my imac in the house ... and do my editing there?   Or do I look for a 3 year old macbook or some type of used Apple computer for the studio?
PS .. my set up curently is
imac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Garageband 09 ver. 5.1
    TASCAM US-144 usb audio interface
    MXL V63M - MIC
Then obviosly all my live instuments including a Roland TD4 drum kit (that is not easy to mix once recorded - kick drum)
My studio monitors or SAMSON USB Studio dock ... and they are not great
Any advice/coments on the equipment would be great too ..  thanks eveyone

if you already have it, try it and see how the workflow is.
the caution is that this too is a one way street: the new version of GB on the iMac will open the older files, but once you save them you won't be able to open the newly saved files on the old machnie in the old version of GB

  • Hooking up my iphone to a new computer for the first time....

My computer broke and isn't worth fixing so I can't access it again. My mom just bought her a new laptop so I just inherited the one she had been using (actually ended up working out great for me cause it's only a year old and nicer than mine that broke).  My new computer didn't have iTunes on it until I just installed it a few moments ago.
My question is whether or not I need to be concerned that my iPhone is gonna be erased the first time I plug it into this new computer?  I'm concerned I'll lose all my contacts, apps, photos, settings etc.  Just last week I backed up all my music and movies to my external drive, luckily I happened to do that right before the computer died so I'm not worried about that.
If it is a problem how do I stop it from erasing all that when it syncs?

In regards to iTunes content, an iPhone can be synced or manually managed with music and videos with an iTunes library on a single computer only, and photos can be transferred from a single computer only.
When transferring iTunes content and photos from another computer, all iTunes content and photos transferred from a different computer will be erased from the iPhone first.
Photos transferred from your computer are optimized for viewing on your iPhone as part of the iTunes sync/transfer process. The original resolution of these photos is reduced on your iPhone. All photos on your computer and all photos transferred from your computer to your iPhone should be included with your computer's backup along with all other important data, which should include your iTunes library as well.
Backing up your iTunes library per the instructions included with this link and transferring the backup to a new or different computer will prevent any iTunes content from being erased from your iPhone first when transferring iTunes content from a new or different computer.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751
iTunes includes an option to transfer iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store from an iDevice but this is for iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store only.
First you need to authorize the new or different computer with your iTunes account with iTunes if you haven't already done so. With your iPhone connected to iTunes and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone.
You can use a 3rd party paid utility such as this one to transfer photos from your iPhone that were transferred from your former computer, but the original resolution of these photos will be lost, and such utilities are not supported by Apple.

Contacts are designed to be synced with a supported address book application on your computer. If you aren't doing so, contacts on your iPhone are not touched when syncing your iPhone with iTunes on a new or different computer. If you are syncing contacts with a supported address book application on your computer and the supported address book application on the computer is empty, before the first sync for this data enter one contact in the supported address book application on your computer. This will provide a merge prompt with the first sync for this data, which you want to select.

  • How do I transfer the music content on my old IPOD (click wheel) to Itunes in my new computer for subsequent transfer to a new IPOD

How do I transfer music on my old IPOD( click wheel) to Itunes on my new computer(Windows 8) for further transfer to a new IPOD nano

If you purchased all of the songs through itunes store, please follow these steps:
    1. Open up Itunes and Click on Itunes Store
    2. Once you're in the Itunes Store look to right side of the screen and you should see the word "purchased". Click purchased and you'll be sent to a purchase screen.
    3. Click on "All Songs" and then it will show all the songs you've downloaded. From there you just hit the button that looks like a cloud with an arrow on it, and it will download all the songs all over again.
If you didn't purchase them through Itunes, then you'll have to download software that will strip the songs from your iPod onto your computer. And here is a guide about how to transfer iPod music. Hope it helps. Feel free to email me if you need further help.

  • Setting up iTunes on new computer for two users

I just got a new Windows 7 laptop and I'm trying to figure out how to transfer two distinct user libraries to the new computer.
A little background: My wife and I have been using the same computer for years with different user accounts - she had her 30 GB iPod with all her music, and I had my 80 GB iPod with all my music and playlists. All of our music, however, has been saved and configured to work with an external hard drive (E:\iTunes).
I'm keeping the external hard drive with the new computer, and since all the file paths are configured to match up with E:\iTunes, it seems like it should be really easy to make the switch to the new computer. But so far it isn't.
I installed iTunes 9 on my new computer and set the default file path to the E: drive, enabled my iPod for disk use, and tried synching my iPod, but the only songs that transferred were those that I had purchased via the iTunes store -- which wasn't very many.
What am I doing wrong? What do I need to do so that when I plug in my iPod the iTunes on my new computer replicates my old library, playlists and all? I don't want to manually copy over the entire E:\iTunes folder because there are a lot of tunes on there that I don't want or need -- files that I will eventually have to upload for my wife's account and her iPod.
Any help the users on this forum can offer would be appreciated. Thanks!

It depends on whether the entire iTunes folder, including all the library files, are on the external drive, or that drive contains only the music.
First, resetting the location of the iTunes Music folder in the iTunes preferences, by itself, only sets where future purchases and imports go. In and of itself it won't reset where iTunes looks for tracks already in the iTunes library. That's all contained in your former library files. If those were on the old computer and no longer available, use the Add Folder to Library command in iTunes and select the folder on the external drive that contains the tracks. That will get them into iTunes, though you'll have lost all your playlists, ratings, and playcounts (which are also in the iTunes library files).
If the iTunes library files are also on the external drive, launch iTunes while holding down the Shift key and navigate to and select the folder containing the library file.
If the library files were on the old computer but you still have access to it, you may be able to copy the library file to the same place on your new computer, presuming the path to the external drive remains the same.
    Hope this helps.

  • Using my new computer for my ipod music

I just bought a new computer but I have an ipod that is full of my music. How can I use my new computer as the main source for my ipod library without losing all the songs on my ipod now?

    hi adugan,
for future posts you are probably better to get results from here:
    iPod Discussions
but what I had to do when I got my new computer is this:
plug my iPod into my older computer( the one that is authorized with the iPod ) and dump all the songs back to iTunes ( only the ones that are not already there ). once you are SURE you have back-up'd your iPod tunes then go to next step.
start itunes and plug your iPod into your computer, when itunes prompts you to erase or delete and use this ipod on this computer, accepted it. Make sure you check to see if there is any updates for your iPod using iTunes iPod Tabs.
    Hope this helps...

  • Need new computer for high graphic gaming without breaking the bank, any suggestions?

Hi I've asked before about upgrading my current laptop, which the only bad thing about is the graphics card.  Now I have given up on that (unless you do know a way) and am searching for a new computer, laptop or desktop, it doesn't matter to me.  But I just need one that will be able to play high graphic games and costs as low as possible.  So if you have any suggestions please leave the name of it or a link to it, thanks.

What's your highest limit possible to spend?
Gaming on a laptop is a bad idea and a complete waste of money because PC games requires almost yearly upgrades just to keep up with the gaming requirements.
My suggestion for gaming on a laptop is nothing below $1500-$2000. Anything below that is a waste of money and you will be having to buy a new laptop every other year just to play games.
The lowest that I would even recommend is this Asus.
