Advice on Oracle DBA Associate (OCA) Certification

Hi, All
i'm a newbie to Oracle. I was given a task of passing Cetrtification Exam 1z0-042 for
Oracle DBA (OCA - Oracle Certified Associate)
which is the lowest certification level for an Oracle DBA.
My Q: what Edition of Oracle database should I use in my preparation for the Exam: Oracle Express Edition OR Oracle Standard (enterprise?) Edition?
I started to use E-learning materials from Oracle and I see that most of the examples are given referencing Oracle Enterprise manager, which is not the part of Oracle Express Edition [if i'm wrong pls correct me]
Thank you in advance for your help

For DBA learning, you'll want to use Enterprise Edition with all the bells and whistles (partitioning, RAC, bitmap indexes, you name it). Its free to download for this sort of purpose.
Check out www.dizwell.com for articles on installing Enterprise Edition (through VMWare or directly) on various platforms.

i am very keen to pursue my career in dba but not getting a good break in that.
so i am looking forward to do some courses in that from hyderabad,as linux ...oracle 10g DBA...RAC.present i just know oracle 9i
At present i just know about wilshire ...
so please tell me will it be worth going in this direction to go to hyderabad ...do course dedicatedly and then can i be able to move in production database showing some dba experience.
or do you know some other best institutes in hyderabad...some those can also provide placement.Hyderabad is a choice because its affordable to me...courses over there are cheaper.
please guys do suggest me..as i really need a genuiine advice.
thank you so much in advance

    Xaheer,user8740508
Can you point me where the OP has mentioned that he wants an institute name to be given to him? And the claims you guys are doing about these institutes being the best ones, what's the authenticity of that? Are these Oracle Education Partners, are they under the WDP program or merely just a training center providing trainings? Please stop putting names of the institutes just like that and remove the references and emails given!
    @OP,
If you want to do training, I would suggest that you first of all get a good discussion done that what modules you want to get trained upon? I wouldn't suggest you to go to any XYZ institute but would rather ask you to do a self learning first. Start reading with the documentation and also install the latest version of Oracle(11g) on your home machine. Do give a call to Oracle University india at this number and have a discussion about what and how you should persue about the training. You can call either at 1800 425 8877 or at this number +91 80 4108 4709.

    Regards,
ManojI am confused to. 1z0-047 is an SQL exam.
In essence there is no time limiit, however all certifications will eventually be retired as they reach end of life.
Oracle will try to give 3 months notices of retirements ... from a practical point of view 10g DBA and 11g DBA certifications paths will very likely be good for more than a couple of years from now.

    - Visit [http://www.oracle.com/education/certification]
    - Visit [http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=151] and drill down from there.
---- The exam course page also gives recomended oracle training.
    ---- See [http://blogs.oracle.com/certification/2009/05/the_route_you_choose.html]
You should also evaluate why you are chooses 10g DBA OCA rather than 11g DBA OCA. There can be good reasons for this.
Please note that if you continue with the next DBA certiifcation on that route (10g DBA OCP ) you will need to have an approved attended a hands on course (for that certification) from an approved institution (Oracle University is the safest bet).

  • Oracle 11g OCA certification

I am newbie .I would like to know a good book for Oracle 11g OCA certification ,1Z0-051 and 1Z0-052(with lesser number of mistakes).Appreciate a response.

I can tell you from personal experience that it is extraordinarily difficult to write a technical book with zero defects. Spell-checkers and grammar checkers produce huge numbers of false positives when looking for standard (i.e. non technical) errors. Technical errors are easy to introduce -- forget to add a 'Not' in a sentence, or something similar -- and hard to detect afterward. When I read through my study guides looking for errors, I tend to see what I meant to write.
That said, such defects are normally a tiny fraction of the information contained within certification manuals. A couple of reviews on the Oracle Press 1Z0-052 book written by John Watson mention a couple of errors and then imply the book is filled with more. I've read the book and it is very informative. It contains hundreds of pieces of information and contains about ten errors -- all mentioned in the errata on the McGraw Hill site. The books is good preparation for the text and for learning the basics of being an Oracle DBA.
As Aman indicated, using more than one source is a good way to help to detect inaccuracies. I believe in always using multiple sources and the documentation is generally a good option for that.

From the title of your post you seem to be seeking an PL/SQLOCA certification (obained by fr instance 1z0-051 + 1z0-144 (though there are other options).
However the exams you mentaion typically refer to DBA Certifications.

My rule of thumb is the higher the better.  So on that basis go for 12c rather than 11g.  And your certification will remain active for longer.
However to get to DBA OCP level you will need to submit an approved authorised training course at some point.  So its best to plan for that early.  If you get your training paid for no problem. If you have to have cheap 11g WDP training nearby or you already have a course which is accepted for 11g then that is valid reasons to to go for 11g.
Anyway if you study for your SQL exam first it's not a decision you have to make right away.
The are my personal opinions only.
.... Its also worth mentioning the 1z0-0[56]3 exam for OCP is a lot about backups ..... and from your background to get into DBA work that could be a critical dealbreaker.
.... And its also worth mentioning one or two of the exams satisfying the 12c approved list are 2 day courses and therefore (relatively) cheaper.

  • OCA Certification Inquiry

    Hi,
I am preparing to give OCA certification.
And this may sound to be a stupid question but I have a doubt.
OCA certification as a whole consists of two parts right
    1Z0-051 - SQL Fundamentals I
    1Z0-052 - Oracle DBA Fundamentals I
Are the above two separate certifications? Is it that passing these above certifications only will grant me OCA certification.
If yes then do we have to give them at the same time or there can be gap between them(If gap then how much it would be).
Also could you please let me know the cost of the above two certifications.
    Thanks you,
    Anshul

OCA certification as a whole consists of two parts rightRight.
Are the above two separate certifications? No. They are separate tests. The two tests together will grant you the Oracle Database 11g Administrator Certified Associate certification.
If yes then do we have to give them at the same time or there can be gap between themThey can be taken at widely separated times. There is no time limit beyond the retirement of the exams. You might take 051 tomorrow and 052 three years from now.
Also could you please let me know the cost of the above two certifications.1Z0-051: $125 US
    1Z0-052: $195 US

  • Chubb Institute - Oracle DBA

I'm looking for feedback and experience with Chubb Institute, particularly with their DBA course. Here are the questions I'd like answers to:
    1) How would you rate Chubb Institute, as both a school and a jumping off point to a new career?
    2) Were the courses hands on enough, were the instructors knowledgeable in there respective fields?
    3) As I'll explain below I'm making a career change at 40 years old. I get the impression from the adviser at Chubb, that many of the students are making career changes from other fields. I'd like to hear the experience of those that have done just this.
    4) Originally I had contacted them regarding their Java programming course. They advised against it saying that for the foreseeable future the field is not looking promising for entry level programmers, and felt that the DBA program would be my best bet. Any thoughts.
    5) Can you recomend any forums or web sites for those pursuing a DBA ?
For the last 15 years I've been employed as an aircraft mechanic. My company recently made the decision to relocate to another state. Rather then relocate with them I'm contemplating making a career change. Basically I've gone as far as possible with my present occupation, have grown tiered of it and look forward to doing something new. I've always been interested in computing, and feel that a career in computers would give me the challenges and opportunities I'm looking for. I have been pursuing a Computer Science degree (associates) at the local community college, but have always felt that their program was too academic and did not provide enough hands on experience. Additionally I've already taken most of my computer courses but still have about 2 or 3 semesters (part time) worth of general academic courses. The Chubb Oracle DBA course will take about a year going part time. I feel that spending the next year with intensive hands on experience, would better serve my purpose then spending that year taking trig and biology. With the above said I'd like to hear your experiences or advice.

hey i have started my OCP certification course ....im moving base to the States in a couple of months .... i the scenario for DBAs really good out there?

  • Is a Oracle SQL Expert a certification?

I was looking at the Oracle Certified Associate on 11g.  Within that there are lots of tests.  Some of those are SQL Fundmentals 1Z0-051.  Another one is 047 SQL Expert.
Are these individual classes, within the OCA, certifications as well?  Or, are they only classes to get to the OCA?  Thanks.

It's a little difficult to follow the thread of your questions.
Oracle Database 11g Administrator Certified Associate is the 11G DBA OCA certification.
This certification requires that you pass a SQL exam.
Either of the exams 1Z0-051 (SQL Fundamentals) or 1Z0-047 (SQL Expert) will meet the SQL requirement for the certification.
Oracle University has classes that can help prepare you for either of the exams, but taking a class is not required to earn the OCA certification.

  • 1Z0-051 without OCA certification

    Hi everyone.
I am currently a university student with a great interest in SQL. As a result, I intend to take the SQL Fundamentals qualifications (1Z0-051). I believe passing this exam alone is not sufficient to get an OCA certification, but I am not really interested in becoming a DBA later, I can see myself as a developer instead. I know that there is a SQL Expert qualification too, but I believe I do not have the neccessary experience to pass that exam yet, so I am starting with 1Z0-051. My question is, even though it does not give me a certification, is there still a way it can be placed on my CV so that the employer can track it down/check its validity? Do I get an ID or some sort of code after passing the exam, which can be used for others to look my results up online?
    Thank you,
    All the best,
    D

... I am not really interested in becoming a DBA later, I can see myself as a developer instead.
Just a SQL developer?  If you take (and pass) the exam 1Z0-144 after 1Z0-051, you will become an OCA PL/SQL developer.  That will be a verifiable Oracle certification.
...is there still a way it can be placed on my CV so that the employer can track it down/check its validity? Do I get an ID or some sort of code after passing the exam, which can be used for others to look my results up online?
You can certainly put on your CV that you passed the Oracle SQL Fundamentals exam.  You will get a PDF of the test results that you can show to an employer if they ask.  However, the only options in CertView on publishing credentials to third parties is for certifications, not test results.

  • Guys i did my OCA Certification. KIndly suggest me as what i should do now for a good job in india beside completing OCP certification?

I want to work and i need to know what are the scopes & what i should do to get a good job which has further growth and what courses can i do beside OCP certification. I am confused so kindly help me. Also, i completed my OCA 6 months before does it effect in getting jobs?

As Phillippe indicates -- which OCA you mean makes a big difference.  My guess is you are referring to the DBA OCP, but I could be wrong.  I have written a number of articles targeted to people looking to start their Oracle career.  Links to four of them are below:
