Advice on Oracle Patches/Oracle Support

I'd like some advice here... I am of the opinion to NEVER apply an Oracle patch without getting direction to do so from Oracle Support to correct an existing issue. I have some colleagues who believe we should apply certain patches based on success they have had in other environments and do so without involving Oracle Support.
Can someone please offer some guidance here on what might be the best practice?
Thanks

Personally, it would depend on the "we" you're referring to and on the environment...
If you're an application vendor that knows that your product hits a particular bug relatively frequently or you've got home-grown apps that hit multiple databases in your organization that all hit a particular bug relatively frequently because of known similarities in architecture/ design/ implementation, I'd have no problems applying a patchset to all the systems. If you find that it's easier to maintain a bunch of different databases if they all run identical patchsets, I could also see that argument as potentially having some merit.
On the other hand, if you're talking to someone that wants to apply a patch because it solved a problem at some other site that may or may not resemble your site, I'd probably steer clear.

    Hi ,
You can execute few commands from SAP level, suppose for example if you don't have access to Operating system. But it will be executed  under sidadm user.Opatch utility will executed under orasid user ( concerns if you have Unix flavour ) .
I have used this and it gives the result.

  • Oracle To End Support for Java 7

No More Free Updates for Java 7 after April 2015
Users must sign long-term support deals or migrate to Java 8 to avoid 'enormous headache and disruption to millions of applications'
Public updates for Java 7 -- including bug and security fixes -- will end this month, a situation that one security advocate says could impact millions of applications.
"As outlined in the Oracle JDK [Java Development Kit] Support Roadmap, after April 2015, Oracle will not post further updates of Java SE [Standard Edition] 7 to its public download sites," Oracle's Java SE Support Roadmap states. "Customers who need continued access to critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for Java SE 7 or older versions can get long-term support through Oracle Java SE Support. The process of migrating users from Java 7 to Java 8 through the auto update feature is expected to take place after the January 2015 CPU release."
[ The art of programming is changing rapidly. We help you navigate what's hot in programming and what's going cold and give insights into the technologies that are changing how developers work. | Keep up with hot topics in app dev with InfoWorld's Application Development newsletter. ]
Oracle released Java SE 7 in July 2011; Java SE 8 was released in March 2014. Java, particularly on the client side, has been beset by security issues in recent years. But Oracle has taken many steps to address the issues and stressed that most of the problems dated back several years, before Oracle took over Java from Sun in 2010.
Still, the impact of Oracle's cessation of public updates could be severe, an official at security firm Waratek, believes. Oracle's "rapid" end-of-life schedule for Java versions is great for innovation and language evolution, Waratek CTO John Matthew Holt said in an emailed statement. "However, there is a dangerous tradeoff; now millions of Java 7 applications will have to defend themselves against code-level vulnerabilities without the benefit of future fixes." Holt advocates either upgrades to Java 8 or use of Java Run-time Application Self Protection (RASP) technologies (Waratek is a RASP vendor).
This week's security update from Oracle, meanwhile, marks the "proverbial 'end of the road' for Java 7 application security, Holt said. "After today, the only version of the Java Platform which will receive public security updates is Java 8.  This is huge news, and it is going to cause enormous headache and disruption to millions of application owners around the world."
Contacted Tuesday afternoon for a comment on the end of public updates for Java SE 7, by late evening Oracle had not yet responded.
The April 2015 Critical Patch Update released Tuesday by Oracle provides 98 new fixes for security issues across a wide range of product families, said Eric Maurice in an Oracle blog post. These range from Oracle Database to Oracle Fusion Middleware, Java SE, and MySQL. Fourteen of the security fixes are for Java SE.

Java 7 has already been dead for quite a while. While you could still use it for Java apps on your system, Apple blocked its use in browsers long ago. You have to install version 8 if you need Java support for the web.

    Igor,
Since you've encountered undocumented errors, your repository upgrade has failed. You'll want to leave the repository as is for troublshooting, if at all possible, and log a TAR with support if you haven't already. They'll ask you to upload your upgrade log file and your upgrade tmp directory.

  • Oracle Patch Base and Parameter Maintenace for BO installations

SAP publishes a set of recommended Oracle Patches and Parameter settings for Oracle Database operation on all OLAP and OLTP systems.  Do the bug patches and database parameter values recommended apply to Business Objects installations that leverage Oracle or are there different requirements for BO application installations which are configured to use an Oracle database?  If so, where can I find the following information?
    Alan

I would suggest to look the Support platforms documentation of your BOBJ version.

  • Install the oracle patch with OPatch

    Hi:
the error "ORA 3106" happened when the BW system was drawing out the
data from the CRM system . I found the note "1005758 - ORA 3106 in
Oracle 10.2.0.2",so I downloaded the oracle patch p5092134 and p6646850. I upgraded the opatch version to 10.2.0.2.5 and executed the
command "opatch apply " in the patch "6646850" folder, but the process
stopped at the phase "Backing up files affected by the patch '6646850'

  • Oracle field length error after Oracle patch update

    Dear All,
We have an ABAP program wherein we are inserting records in an external (non-SAP) Oracle DB
by means of native SQL. On 22/08/2010, we had updated an Oracle patch in the production server.
After the patch was updated, the program has started throwing error:
An SQL error has occurred: ORA-12899: value too
    large for column
    "CELLAPPS"."AWLTBLMESSAGES"."MESSAGETEXT" (actual:
    438, maximum: 350)#ORA-06512: at line 1
The message text variable has only 219 characters. After some observations, i found that all the data is
converted into exactly double the length after this oracle patch update.
    Please help.
    Thanks.

    Hello,
Which is your NLS for your SAP and the external databases?
    SELECT VALUE FROM V$NLS_PARAMETERS WHERE PARAMETER = 'NLS_CHARACTERSET';
What is your DBCO Conn. Info field?
What is the result if you set the remote connection in DBCO as per SAP note [808505|http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/808505]?
