ADVICE ON RAM/MBP FREEZING, ANYTHING??

My mid 2012 Macbook Pro (13 inch, purchase in November) has been having many many problems lately. First, I knew something was going to drive me insane when the laptop would freeze randomly, causing me to restart the laptop by holding the power button. Once I tried to do that, it would beep three times, pause and beep again. I'm aware its a RAM problem (a loose RAM slot?). I just don't know how to go about to repair this or if that is it for sure?
Now, I can't turn on my laptop without the beeps. Even if it does pass the beeping, it would freeze at once my desktop loads, or after ~5 minutes of browsing the web, it would freeze, and have pink or green vertical lines across the screen, forcing me to force shut down the computer. I also noticed the top left corner, or even the top of my macbook being very hot in the 5 minutes of use.
I've brought it to the apple store and they temporarily repair it and when i bring it home the problems persists. I also don't have apple care warranty anymore so it's just annoying to have to pay for any further repair, especially if it won't be worth it and if I might as well buy a new macbook. (and honestly, no one has the money to do that, and i'm a college student....)
I actually just never dropped/ have accidental damage to my laptop so the fact that my macbook is acting up in literally less than two years just ****** me off. I just need advice as to what I should do, possible repairs, or just WHY MY LAPTOP IS DOING THIS?????

Hi there jmechan24,
You may want to try the troubleshooting steps outlined in the article below. You may need to reseat (remove and reinstall) the RAM, but this may only be a temporary fix based on what you described.
Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1367
If your computer won't turn on, try each of these steps:
Verify you have a good connection from your Mac to the wall outlet by confirming the power cord and adapter if present are securely connected and plugged in. To check if the wall outlet is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.
If the wall outlet is working and you continue to have no power try another power cord or adapter if available. If it works you may need a replacement cord or adapter.
Note: See Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters for further troubleshooting with MagSafe adapters.
Disconnect all accessories that are plugged in to the computer, such as a printer, hub, or other mobile device.
If your Mac supports user-installable memory, solid state drive, or hard drive, and you recently installed any of these, make sure they are installed correctly and are compatible with your computer. If possible, reinstall the original memory or drive into the computer to find out if the behavior persists afterwards.

If you are still unable to start up your computer after trying each of these steps, visit an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for further diagnosis. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail Store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).Note: Diagnostic fees may apply for issues not covered under warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan (APP).

  • MBP Freezing Troubles

    Hello,
This I wrote a few weeks ago about my 1st generation MBP freezing with minimal applications running. Therefore, I upgraded from 1G of RAM to 2G. I've definitely noticed improvements in my Page-Ins and Page Outs. However when running minimal programs, I now notice my MBP still freezes after an 1 1/2 hour of use. The rainbow rarely shows. I repaired my permissions prior to the last freezing episode. Is there anything else I should look at?
I'm running a MBP w/ 2G of RAM 2.0GHz Core Duo, 500 GB WD Hard Drive (Installed appx. a year ago)

Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job.
I would do a Disk Repair at least once a month. If you really want your Mac to stay in top shape, I would recommend DiskWarrior. It is the best at directory repairs. It rebuilds then actually replaces your old directory. I feel every Mac owner should have a copy.
Make sure you get the disk so you can boot up on it to run repairs. You can also install it on another drive and run it from there to repair this one. DW works faster that way.
I use DW once a month to try and catch errors in my system from getting too far out of hand.

This got so bad, that I reformatted my entire drive, reinstalled all of the Apple programs from scratch, and then only select third party ones that I always use (Microsoft Office, OmniFocus, Firefox, Evernote).  That's about it.  The main program that constantly stalls out, though, is Apple Mail. I have 80% of my hard drive free (240GB out of 300GB).  I cannot figure it out, and it's driving me nuts.  Any suggestions?

Dear Hampton, I have exactly the same problem with my MacBook Pro and it seems to be a RAM problem. I took it to the Genius Bar and sadly the truth, which the Genius bar guys were reluctant to admit, is that there are issues with the way the OS manages RAM, failing to clear Inactive memory and keep Free memory at a healthy level. If you go to the Activity Monitor and check the system memory I bet you will find that whenever you're seeing the "Exited: Killed: 9" lines one after the other as posted, you Free Memory would have been gobbled up by Inactive Memory. Extra memory would seem to be the permanent solution, sadly, and Apple charge an arm and a leg for it. Or you may have to live like I am at the moment, i.e. having the Activity Monitor permanently on the dock to keep an eye on Inactive Memory. When Inactive Memory gets too big I launch Terminal (Utilities) and type "purge." It frees up memory by clearig Inactive memory so that your machine's memory is as fresh as it is soon after you've started it. Good luck

    hi there!
in february i bought my MBP and have sometimes software crashes of MAIL, SAFARI, iDVD..... I thought there were the normal problems after APPLE changed to the INTEL processors, but sometimes (once in a week) my MBP freezes for 2 seconds and reboot. I run the hardware test and everythings seems to be fine
can somebody help me? thanks a lot!

    Hi bfunky,
Try resetting the usual suspects, PRAM, PMU, etc.
If that doesn't resolve anything maybe it's time to take it by an Apple store to have it checked out..

  • Need advice on RAM i need for MacBook Pro Retina? Will 4GB Be Enough?

    Hi Everyone,
Basically I am currently saving up for my MacBook Pro Retina(13") and I need some advice about RAM. I am a 14 year old student who is starting there GCSE's in September and I have no idea how much RAM i will need; I will be using my new MacBook on video editing(not intensive just in iMovie), GarageBand(occasional), Safari and iLife and I am a little worried that 4GB of RAM is not going to be enough to handle this. I know that I cannot upgrade the RAM after i have purchased the Mac but I don't really want to pay over £200/$300 just for extra storage and RAM when i don't really need it, what do you all think? any ideas?☺️

Because memory is not upgradeable, you should get as much as you can afford. 4 GBs is a minimal requirements. I would suggest at least 8 GBs. The same goes of SSD storage space. Get more if you can. At least 256 GBs if you can afford it. Remember it is not what you will do tomorrow, but a couple of years from now that really matters.

  • Please help: My MBP freezes when not connected to a power supply.

When I am working on my MBP (specs below) without it connected to the power supply, it will freeze every once in a while. I have no option but to hold down the power button to do a hard restart – and then it takes a good five minutes to boot back up.
Does anyone know what the problem might be? It NEVER freezes when it is connected to power.
BTW – the MBP freezes randomly, *sometimes the battery will be near full, sometimes only half full,* so I don't think it has to do with the amount of power left in the battery.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

there is definitely a problem Apple must solve, i have this issue too.
here is a thread i started

  • Unable to restart, MBP freezes 9 times out of 10

My MBP freezes on start up or rebooting. I have tried zapping PRAM.Ran disc repair utility and disc is ok. The MacBook Pro Firmware update 1.0 installs but on restart the firmware fails to update as the computer freezes. Is there any solution? At my wits end. No software changes recently. Startup freezes have only been an increasing problem over the last 5 days. Now the computer is consistently freezing. Could it be Norton antivirus? Any hope?

Hi, Lauren. Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your hard drive is just way too full to function properly.
Check and see if you may have one or more Previous System folders on the iBook. If so, delete them and empty the Trash, and see if that gets you some breathing room.
You need to keep at least 15% of the total capacity of the hard drive as available space for proper functioning of the drive.
Here is a link to an article which gives some pointers on freeing up space:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/freeingspace.html
Also, the warranties on a hard drive are usually three years, so if the hard drive is the original one, it's likely running on borrowed time. Are you keeping a current backup in case that drive fails? If not, you need to be doing that.

  • SR MBP freezes intermittently.

    Hi,
My SR MBP freezes occasionally. Te only option is to hold the power button until it restarts. My wife has had to remove the battery to get it to restart - twice.
I've tried using the disk utilities and no hardware problems were reported. How do I 'repair permissions'? Is that likely to help?
Any suggestions? There does not appear to be a common cause of the crashes.
    Thanks in advance.

One thing to check is the battery itself, and make sure it isn't swollen or distorted and exerting pressure on the trackpad from below. I believe the battery runs hotter when the Mac is on battery alone, and this might possibly be a factor.
    Good luck!

  • 2007 MBP freezes, Ran hardware test got error code 4MEM/11/40000000:505c99b0 Help?

Hi all, my 2007 MBP freezes and requires me to hold power button to restart. It's happening somewhat frequently. ( installed new SSD and new battery in the last 2 months)
I ran the quick hardware test ( am running the extended one now) and recieve the following error code  4MEM/11/40000000:505c99b0
Hoped to squeeze another year or two out of this old warrior. Any ideas what this code might be?
    Thanks

This is a memory error of some sort. We don't have the Rosetta stone for these errors, so I don't know what the rest means.

  • MBP freezes / hangs when connecting LCD via DisplayPort

Time and time again, my new unibody MBP freezes, when i connect my LCD TV via displayport adapter plus dvi>hdmi cable.
The same setup worked flawlessly with my old MBP back in the days and 80% of the time it also works on my new mbp.... but sometimes, upon connecting the cable to the MBP the screen just locks up. the music keeps playing, thekeyboard light stays on but nothing moves on the screen. i have to switch the mbp off and on again, which to me doesnt feel very comfortable....
    anybody else with those problems?

Just wanted to chime in to say that I have the same problem:
    MacBook Unibody with Backlit Keyboard
    Mini DisplayPort to DVI-D adapter
    SyncMaster 243T 24" LCD
Every 3-4 times, when plugging or unplugging my MacBook to or from the adapter, the screen freezes and I have to hard reboot.
Any solutions? Rebuilding permissions, zapping PRAM/NVRAM, resetting the SMC, etc., do not help, of course.

  • My MBP freezes on login

My MBP freezes when I get to the login page. I put in my user and pswd and hit login then I get the spinning beachball it goes away and the back and login buttons are grayed out. I can retype my password but nothing happens.
I booted in safe mode and checked for the adobe cue in startup items but it was not there. I also remove remote desktop.
When i got to system prefrences/accounts and click on login items it freezes and I have to force quit.
    Any ideas???

In safe mode, try repairing disk permissions under disk utility (applications>utilies>disk utility). You can try an archive and install too, that'll take an hour but it'll work (it reinstalls the OS with all your current files and programs intact).
You can also take it to the apple store and they can reboot it from an external hard drive. Find your closest store at apple.com/retail and sign up for a genius appointment, you might have to wait until midnight and sign up for one tomorrow.

    Please advise,

Those are not actual crash reports, but messages that crash reports were logged. The actual crash reports will be found for specific processes that crashed such as the Installer or an application.
Information that you should look at would be the console log entries at the time of a crash or a kernel panic log entry if you experienced a kernel panic.
In your case you most likely updated over a system that was already defective. I suggest doing the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
