Advice on recovery from hard disk error 301

Hi all,
I have a HP desktop PC, Pavilion HPE h8-1170d which is about 2.5 years+ old. The specifications are:
Intel Core i5 2500 with 8G RAM, 1TB SATA hard disk. I have recently installed a Radeon HD6670 graphics card as the original card gave problems. I have also upgraded to a Cooler Master 500W power supply.
Other details of my PC are listed here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02991104&tmp_track_link=ot_faqs/top_issues/en_u...
Recently, I experienced failure associated with the harddisk, indicating error 301. I managed to recover sufficiently (somehow) by using Microsoft's error checking tool for harddisk and now able to boot up and run. But I know I will have to replace it as it is a matter of time before the harddisk completely dies.
Before I go and buy a replacement harddisk, I hope I could know about the following:
1. I am not sure which version of SATA is my PC using. Can I just specify that I want a SATA harddisk, and not be concerned about their version of SATA ?
2. What is the best way to replace the harddisk from the software perspective ? Should I do an image copy from my current harddisk, if so, what is the easiest way to do this ? sorry, I have not done this before so need to ask such basic question. Would it make sense to connect the new harddisk first and then do the image ?
Thank you very much for any help !

Hi smtan,
A SATA III, 6 GB data transfer rate disk will work.
Your PC model was introduced by HP in 2011. It may have SATA II but a SATA III disk will be backwards compatible. If this is true you will be limited to 3 GB transfer rates.
One other consideration is HDD size. You should probably limit the HDD replacement size to 2 TB. Your PC probably has a legacy BIOS and your HP Recovery discs may not work on a HDD exceeding 2 TB.
You have a couple of choices on moving or installing Win 7 on your new HDD.
You can clone the existing install from the original HDD to the replacement HDD. You will need to use either: free disk imaging software or purchase this software. I have heard good things about Macrium Reflect free and EaseUS free.
You can GOOGLE for other choices.
Install the disk imaging/cloning software on the source HDD. Install the new HDD in your PC.
Run the cloning software and follow instructions on cloning the operating system to the new HDD.
Please see this article for instructions on cloning one HDD to another.
This article may interest you. Consider purchasing an SSD replacement drive. The performance increase is unbelievable. Many SSD manufacturers provide cloning software with the purchase. You also need to buy the desktop kit version. This includes a 3.5 inch adapter for installing the 2.5 inch SSD in the HDD cage.
There is a downside if you go SSD. Your HP recovery discs may not work because the replacement SSD will be less than 1 TB. There are ways around this. Please see this forum post on installing Win 7 without a disc. Let me know if you are interested.

  • Satellite A100 - data recovery from Hard Disk Drive

    Hi,
I have recently tried to help a friend with recovering data of his Toshiba Satelitte A100 that screen has died.
I thought this would be a simply task of removing the hard drive and putting it a HDD caddie and attaching it to another computer,
This does not seem to work.
I can put the hard drive back into the computer and i can hear the computer boot up and was able to see it with a LCD Screen. I have been able to remove the data this way so we are safe.
My question is why can we seem to remove the drive and see it on another computer?
I assume there must be some interface or format that the laptop may use for the recovery section and so cant be seen as a normal drive.
If I couldnt remove the data because say the motherboard died. Is there any way to be able to see the data on another computer.
    Email: [[email protected]]

    >I thought this would be a simply task of removing the hard drive and putting it a HDD caddie and attaching it to another computer
I have done this several times and it works perfectly.
I had full access to all saved data on all partitions.
Similar in on notebook with two HDDs.
I have Satellite A300 with two HDDs inside. On one HDD Ive installed WXP and on another Win7.
Each OS can see saved data on other HDD.
Maybe is there some problem with HDD or with HDD caddie.
Have you tried to connect this HDD to other notebooks to see if the problem is the same?

  • Hard Disk Error Code 301

Can I replace/recover my hard drive after receiving error message "smart disk error 301"?  I have a HP G72-253NR Notebook PC, product # LG583UA. I've received the error message and now when I turn on my system it will not boot up and will automatically go to startup repair. I then get the message that "A hard disk problem is preventing Windows from starting".  This leads me to believe that my hard drive has completely failed.  My notebook is no longer under warranty and I need a quick inexpensive fix. Please help.

    Hi,
The 301 Smart error would indicate the drive is failing and needs to be replaced - this is also consistent with the start-up error.
Your notebook is listed as coming with a 640Gb Hard Drive, but considering there's little or no difference in cost, you can just as easily install a 750Gb HDD if you want a bit more space - the drive on the following link is an example that would be fine for your notebook.
    750Gb Hard Drive.
The procedure to replace the Hard Drive starts on Page 50 of your Maintenance & Service Guide.
Once done, simply use your Recovery DVDs to reinstall the Operating System on the new drive - this procedure is described in the HP document Here.
If you don't have your Recovery Discs, you can order a replacement set using the link below.
    Order HP Recovery Discs.
If you have any problem with this link, order them directly from HP.
If you live in the US, contact HP Here.
If you are in another part of the world, start Here.

  • Data recover from a hard drive error 301

Can anyone advise me of how to recover data from a hard drive error 301.  I have a pavilion dv7-4177 and i received the hard drive error code 301 two weeks after the warranty expired. I back up my data so I though but when tried to reload that data on a new hard drive it would not take. The damage hard drive will not load the OS now even in safe mode. Is there any way to retrieve this data from that hard drive.

    Hi,
One possible way to try and retrieve your files from a non-booting drive is to follow the process detailed in the link below.  The Ubuntu operating system CD you create can run from the CD alone ( ie it doesn't have to install on the Hard Drive ) and I've often found it to be successful in retrieving data even from a failing Hard Drive.  When you've created the CD, follow the instructions and see if you can back up your files.

I replaced the HD with the same model HD that the COMPAQ CQ58 came with because the old HD was shot - how that happend eludes me.

  • HP dv4-1225dx "Hard Disk Error" 3F1 on startup with eSATA HDD attached

The whole internet is void of information on this specific error code, so here it is, lo and behold, the ONLY English-language Google result for this error message:
    Hard Disk Error
Please run the Hard Disk Test in System Diagnostics.
    Error code:
    Hard Disk 1 (3F1)
    F2 System Diagnostics
For more information, please visit: (illegible due to colored text)
Specifically, the "Hard Disk 1 (3F1)" part, that's nowhere to be found online. Tons of pages about 3F0, apparently the primary hard disk. No, this is an error regarding the secondary hard disk, attached via eSATA.
Problem is, there's NOTHING wrong with the attached drive, other than this error on startup. No SMART failures. Comes up and works fine in Windows. Scanned 100% OK. It'd be nice if there were a way to bypass this error automatically, but I always have to hit F2, then Esc to abort its forced diagnostic routine.
It's a WD My Book Studio, 750gb, attached via eSATA. Doesn't happen if I leave it unplugged during startup... but SATA is a connection that likes to be present on startup. The system, as in the title, is a dv4-1225dx laptop, running Windows Home Server (Server 2003), but previously running Windows 7 Home Premium. Vista is evil.
It's also my home server, as of about yesterday (when I set it up and started getting this message). The system seems to crash pretty routinely over the past few days and every time it reboots, it hangs at that stupid "Hard Disk Error" message. Not a pretty sight when I'm away from home and want to access something, like my email. Is there a way around this message hanging the system?
edit: Not to mention the world's most buggy fan-control algorithm, worst heatpipe design on the planet, no AHCI mode control, and terrible system management (battery went dead on you at 40%? tough... remove battery to continue using your computer). LOOOOTS of bugs in this terrible BIOS.

Thanks for the link, it helps clarify that there's a difference between "3F1" and "301" - hard disk error and SMART error. In other words, it's reporting a generic "Error", not even that the drive may be/is failing.
In this case, the drive isn't failing, at all. It's a BIOS bug.
I put the drive on an ExpressCard eSATA controller, and it works fine. Unfortunately, since I'm the only one using this sort of configuration and getting this error, I imagine there won't be any work done to fix the bug

  • Hard disk error on Toshiba Satellite A505 56980

    Hello,
Windows keeps bringing up a notification that the hard disk on my Toshiba laptop(A505 56980) has errors. It recommends for me to get hardware technical support to determine if the disk can be repaired or needs to be replaced.
My disk name is TOSHIBA MK5055GSX and I have only one volume C:\ drive.
I am running my antivirus scan just to make sure I don't have any active viruses or trojans damaging my hard drive. My computer freezes for a few seconds on and off. Not sure if this is related to the hard disk error.
I have backed up all my info and also created system recovery disk. I also have the recovery disks from when I got the laptop.
My question is how do I go about diagnosing the hard disk error and geting it fixed? What is the warranty for hard disks? I bought this laptop beginning of last year.
I appreciate any help I can get to resolve this problem.
    Thanks

Perhaps your model name/number is Satellite A505-S6980?
    Satellite A505-S6980 Specifications
    Satellite A505-S6980 Downloads
Restart your system, when you see the Toshiba logo start pressing the F8 key repeatedly until you enter the Advanced Boot Options Menu, choose 'Repair Your Computer'.
This should take you to the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRe)
Select 'Command Prompt', and type in this command, hit the 'Enter' key, and restart your computer:
       chkdsk c: /r
This will check your hard drive, try to recover any corrupted files/data it can, and repair any problems it can. It takes a while to run anyway. But, if there are problems with your hard drive, it could take many hours. Just keep checking back, it will give a report as it goes, and when it's finished.
Let us know the results. Good luck.

There are 2 ways of running a test on your hard drive . One way is through BIOS (F10) and other is through HP System diagnostics(F2). How exactly was test initiated from your end ?
The SMART imminent failure for Hard drive is an indication that your Hard drive is on verge of failure or might fail anytime depending on usage. I would recommend you to backup your files immediately because your hard drive might die at any moment and I'm pretty sure its needs to be replaced.
Kindly check the instructions over here in order to run the test for your hard drive

  • SMART Hard Disk Error - Replace Hard Drive?

A couple of days ago I recieved an error when I started my computer (HP Pavilion dv6-6071eo), saying "SMART Hard Disk Error" followed by a message telling me that the SMART hard disk check has detected and imminent failure. It told me to backup my files and then press F2 and run a hard disk test. On the last row it displayed "Hard Disk 1 (301)". I tried to run the hard disk test, which failed instantly. I also ran the BIOS hard disk test. It passed the short test without problems and then stopped rather shortly after the long test started with the error "Hard Disk 1 Full 305". My computer has also been running slowly over the last week. From what I've read so far it seems I have to replace my Hard Drive. Is this correct? If yes, would this be a suitable (functional) replacement: http://www.dustinhome.se/product/5010151237/western-digital-black-2-5-320gb-7200rpm-sata-300-16mb/#intcmp=searchProvider_dacsa. Also, would it be worth it (and possible) upgrading to an SSD for noise and heat reduction, which is a problem with this laptop (and several other simular laptops from HP) compared to other laptops. Also, it might be good to mention my warranty has expired.

Have you checked to see if there is any free space left on the hard drive? A full hard drive will make the system run very slowly and it can also keep the system from working properly if it is full enough. The fact that you pass the short test means there is nothing major mechanically wrong with the drive. Just right click on the icon for the main drive likely C:\ in "Computer: and select "properties". If the drive is not actually full then I suggest replacing it. Yes, if you can afford an SSD there is no question that is the way to go. There is nothing not good about an ssd other than an occasional struggle to install it. I have been using ssds for a while and I have never had the installation problems we often see reported here but don't be dissuaded, we are here to help .
