Advice on SATA HDx2 + IDE DVD+RW setup

Was hoping someone out here could help me.  I have the 915G combo.  Updated the BIOS and Intel driver to the latest versions.
I have 2 SATA hard drives (Samsung SP1614C 160GB connect to SATA1, and a Seagate Barracuda ST3200822AS 200GB connected to SATA2).  I had both running just fine using the BIOS IDE setting: ATA/IDE [Compatible] - [SATA Only].  As a point of interest, I was never able to get [Enhanced]-[AHCI] to work - I would get the initial run screen, it would show 'Windows Loading' for a few seconds, then the system would always reboot.  When I updated the firmware, the option to set [ACHI] disappeared.
I just got an NEC 3500A DVD+RW.  I connected this to IDE1 with the MASTER jumper set on the DVD writer.  Before I updated the firmware, I had the [ACHI] option under [Enhanced].  It appeared to recognize both SATA hard disks and the DVD writer.  But like before, it would get to a windows loading screen then reboot.  So I updated the firmware and the [ACHI] option disappeared and I was only left with [IDE] as an option under ATA/IDE [Enhanced].  This setting appears to work ok... but I don't quite understand this option and I'm afraid I might be crippling the speed of my SATA hard disks? (am I reducing the hard disks to ATA speeds with this setting?)
The other setting I then tried, was the ATA/IDE [Compatible] - [SATAPri,PATASec].  However, when I did this, only my first SATA hard disk plugged into SATA1 was recognized as a master, the 2nd SATA hard drive (even when I tried to plug it into SATA3 or SATA4 slots) was not seen in the BIOS, and the DVD-writer would come up as 'master' or 'slave' depending on which jumper setting I had on it.
Any advice would be appreciated!

Fixed my problem by fitting the DVD's as IDE devices and setting PATA.

  • DKA790GX Plat with SATA + IDE DVD drives

I have been running my mb with 2 x SATA HDs and 2 x IDE DVD. No problem.
In (re)building on older computer I had the need for an IDE DVD drive as the SATA was too new so I swapped out one of the IDE from my DKA790GX.
Now I can get the SATA DVD to work fine  on the DKA790GX but NOT the IDE. It seems to be working OK as it makes all the same noises as the SATA when I put in a disk. I have tried moving Jumpers and different IDE cable but can not get it to work.
In itself it is no big deal but I kinda like having an IDE around as it has got me out of scrapes a couple of times.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Perhaps it got damaged during the move. Have you tested it in your other system lately?
Thank you for the polite and quick answering! We would however like some more info. about the system you are talking about. PSU, processor, memory, graphics card.

  • 785GTM-E45 SATA (AHCI) HDD and IDE DVD drive cannot be used together

I have bought 785GTM-E45, and installed a sata hdd and a IDE dvd drive on it.  the sata is set to ahci mode.  After install xp using f6 method and install all the drivers, I cannot find the dvd drive at all in windows.  I have to go into bios to set the sata ports back to IDE model to make the dvd appear again.
Anyone knows the reason?  It looks like a bios bug.  I am using the new v8 bios.

It is just annoying that this board has so many issues.  No vcore change, no gpu voltage change, v8 bios will freeze if entering processor details, and the issue in this current topic.  I have used at least three other brands' boards and never had any issue before.  Oh my, MSI...

  • Annoying IDE DVD Drive problem...

    Hi
I just put together a new gaming system yesterday. However I've been having an annoying problem so far with my IDE LG DVD writer not being able to read CDs/DVDs properly.
I try to install different games/programs and after a lil while I'll get an error saying"FileError: retry?" I have tried using the setup files with autorun disabled.
    My specs are-
    MSI K8n NEO4 Mobo
    1 Gig Corsair Ram
    300 Gig SATA MAxtor HD
    256mb XFX GF 7800GT
    A64 3500+
So here is what I've tried so far.
Opened up the case drive set to master, plugged into master IDE cable, verified this in the BIOS.
Windows installed fine on the same dvd writer drive with no errors at all. It seems only after installing the Nforce IDE drivers that this occurred. I tried removing just the Nforce IDE drivers using add/remove programs but the problem still persists. I am sure this dvd writer works as it works in other computers and successfully installed windows onto the machine, I then tried reinstalling windows a second time just to make sure...same problem. When the Nforce driver was installed I checked and it said ultradma 33. I put it in PIO and the same problem continued.
I know for a fact my cds are good as they are all originals and work in other machines with no scratches.
After removing the Nforce IDE drivers the Windows IDE drivers installed and I rebooted, same problem.
I am really stumped here all I have in the PC are 1 SATA Hard Drive and 1 IDE DVD writer connected to their respective master cables and proper jumper settings...everything looks good in the BIOS.
One other thing I also have an external USB 2.0 Dvd Writer, I use this on another machine. I tried it as well in the machine and I get the same problem. I know it isn't the USB connection since I have other devices on the USB that work fine.
    Any ideas? :S

Your problem is in the nvidia drivers ... you should not uninstall the drivers via add/remove programs but instead go to system >> hardware >> IDE >> properties >> update driver >> choose a driver >> ms or "native", then reboot (in English slightly other wordings might be used).

  • Using IDE DVD drives on a MSI P67A-GD65 motherboard

I am upgrading from a previous build and I want to keep my 2 slot loading DVD/R drives, but they are both IDE.
I tried using a PCI to IDE card from Bytech but that didn't work well.  I think my best chance will be with a SATA to IDE converter.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

You mean (flat cable) P-ATA drives? IDE can be associated as both S-ATA & P-ATA drives. Search the net for suitable converters & adapters. Maybe keep the old system for a backup rig. Upgrading to newer systems using older parts & PSU's is often not such a good idea.

  • 975X PUE: SATA vs IDE Combinations: 2+2, 4, or 1+3?

    Hello,
I searched but didn't find info.  For a new build with a 975X PUE, what is the optimal configuration of IDE/SATA drives.  I want to have a configuation like:
    DRIVE                 PURPOSE                    SATA or IDE?
    C:                     VISTA OS                            ?
    D:                     Data drive                   2 SATA, RAID1
    E:                     Backup for Data                    ?
My question is:   Should I use SATA for drives C and E or IDE?   Or one of each?   Is there a general rule for which is preferred?   All things being equal, I prefer SATA since cables are smaller.
    Thx.
    Scott
    PS   C and E will likely be single-drive, non-RAID.

I thought perhaps there would be a difference data rates between the IDE/SATA, which arise only when you reach a specific # of SATA drives--in which case it might be better to begin using IDE.  Looks like I was wrong.  Thx.
    Scott
SATA II 300 has 3.0 Gbit/sec available per port, so the number of SATA ports used should not make a difference. There is a theoretical advantage in using SATA, as it is a serial connection instead of a parallel connection with PATA.
Furthermore, because of your RAID 1 setup, you will be using AHCI mode for the onboard Intel controller. The Intel Matrix Storage driver (used for AHCI mode) might give you a couple percents extra drive performance over an IDE interface, even when using single drives.
So SATA would be the way to go...

  • P35 Neo2-fr cannot unable to show IDE Dvd-rw in XP

Hi guys, i have 2 SATA hdd, 1 Sata DVD-rw and 1 IDE dvd-rw drives.

  • 1 SATA + 3 IDE Config help please

    Hi, I have an 865PE - Neo2 - LS.
Currently I have 1 SATA HD configured as the first boot device  + a CDRW and a DVD on IDE2.
I would like to add a second standard IDE HD for some extra storage but try as I might I cannot get the bios to recognise the second drive.
I guess what I am asking is this:
1 is it possible to have the following config on this board
    1 SATA
    1 IDE HD
    1 IDE DVD
    1 IDE CDRW
    2. If so, could some kind soul tell me how......PLEASE
    Thanks
    Aus

    AUS,
I personally have the following drives running on my MSI 865PE Neo 2 S mobo without any problem...:
    1 x DVD-Writer(IDE 1, Master),
    1 x DVD(IDE 1, Slave),
    1 x Seagate 80GB HDD(IDE2, Master),
    1 x Maxtor 80GB HDD(IDE2, Slave),
    1 x Seagate 120GB HDD(SATA 1).
    I'm using this config:
    ATA OnChip Operate Mode: Native
    ATA Config: SATA
    PATA Keep Enabled: Yes
    PATA Channel Selection: Both
And running in Win2k SP 4, AMIBIOS v1.0
Check and make sure that you are not using any old IDE cable for the HDD and make sure that you did set to either Master or Slave mode, not Cable Select and make sure that you are getting power from the +12v molex connector that plugged to the HDD.

  • 955X Platinum - use SATA as IDE or RAID ?

    Hello everyone,
I just received my new MSI 955X Platinum motherboard today. The boot-up screen looks quite horrible! Is there any way to change it?
Now, I want to install Windows XP on my WD 36GB SATA 10,000 RPM hard drive. What will give me optimal performance - setting the SATA in IDE  mode or in RAID mode ? From what I understand, setting it as an IDE HDD does not need the RAID driver floppy during the intial stages of Windows XP setup. RAID mode will require the RAID driver floppy.
Also, can the VIA SATA controller be mapped as IDE as well ?
    Thanks for your time.
    Regards,
    Kamran

Yes, you can disable the boot up screen in the BIOS. But if you thought of changing it to something else, hmm you must hack the BIOS code, which I don't recommend.
1 SATA drive? definitely set as IDE. RAID is for stacking up multiple HDDs together as a single logical drive.

  • P35 Neo2 BIOS Settings to run Dual Boot SATA and IDE HD's

    Hi,
I was having intermittent problems with a Gigeabyte so upgraded M/B.
I have an IDE "caddy" with 2 Dual boot HD's (Linux Grub booting XP on sda1 and Fedora9 on sda2), and had no problems with either HD's on old M/B.
The old M/B also had  SATA sockets which I installed a 250GB drive as my main setup.  Dual boot again with same setup.  I set the SATA to "auto" and it detected and ran when no IDE caddy was inserted.
Everything ran OK but I had very intermittent CRC failures that I could not isolate, so I upgrade 2 days ago.
Without inserting any IDE drives I can boot the SATA drive OK into Linux OK  (it also detects an ext3 partition on a seperate /backup partition so the IDE interface works).
If I now try and boot the XP on my SATA drive,  I get the dreaded blue screen.
I assume this is due to me having XP installed without the AHCI support as detailed in other (long) thread showing how to overcome this problem!?
I would also like to know if and I can just boot from my IDE drive (with no SATA's connected),   because even though it seems to detect the PATA HD OK,  I cannot get it to boot from either of them!  I know these HD's have not changed as I have checked both of them on the SATA OS and both Logical volumes are still there and the relevant boot flags are both set.
Even though I have a bit of a complex setup,  this may well be a very simple case of BIOS settings (sorry).
    FYI:
I have a A7345 IMS V1.8 012408 BIOS and my two IDE drives are both dual boot with XP on the first partition.
Both Linux partitions are formatted using Logical Volume Management  (LVM).
    Thanks for your time
Any help/pointers would be appreciated as I am not absolutely sure that the M/B is functional or not.

Thanks for the info,  I am now a bit clearer as to what is happening!
I removed known good IDE HD from caddie and put it directly on the IDE cable (after removing the old non LVM linux IDE disk that was on it).
The newly connected HD was initialized OK and I can see both SAT and IDE disks listed with F11.
On trying to boot from the IDE,  it starts up and decompresses the image,  BUT cannot seem to find the LVM Volume group 03 (which is where my /boot partition is located).
It then gives in and after a while,  boots back to the SATA OK (where the bootloader is also inside the LVM so I can't see why the LVM IDE disk is a problem but the LVM SATA boots OK).
I do remember (late last night) trying with just IDE drive and of course it just hung because it did not have any alternative to boot!
    Any other observations/suggestions?
Apologies its late here and I will not be back for a few hours!
    Regards

  • Sata or IDE hard drive in MBP?

    Hi all,
I have a MacBook Pro 2007 Intel core duo 2.4 which has decided not to boot up anymore. I have been informed from a tech guy at work that it is most probably the logic board. So have decided to transfer my photos/movies/music files from the hard drive and on to my wife MBP under a different user.
I have been told that the easiest way to do so is by making my hard drive into an external one and then connect it to a new computer and drag the wanted files across e.g  photos/movies/music (this is possible right???). However I don't know if the hard drive is SATA or IDE nor what the dimensions are of the physical drive, therefore I don't know what enclosure/caddie to buy.
Any advice on the enclosure or other ways of getting my file off what be great.

For a laptop drive, you will need a 2.5 inch enclosure although ebay will list them probably as a laptop hard drive caddy.
If your drive is IDE, the drive will look like this:
    http://www.mp3car.com/attachments/general-mp3car-discussion/5576d1097012581-50-p in-laptop-ide-convertor-ata5.jpg
It it's SATA (which I suspect it may be) it will look like this:
    http://www.datarecoverytutorial.com/wp-images/recover-data-from-laptop/laptop-sa ta-hard-drive.jpg
The physical size of the drives are both the same, but if it IS IDE, then it may have a convertor attached to it that looks like this:
    http://l.thegreatchai.com/ide_laptop.jpg
When you buy the caddy, you will likely have to remove this convertor to plug it in. It just pulls off, but make sure do it gently because you don't want to bend or break the pins of the drive itself.
By the way, buy the caddy off eBay and do not spend more than £5/$5. It will likely come with a USB cable and carry case.

  • SATA Emulation: IDE to AHCI. Is it safe?

    Hi there,
A newbie here. I just bought HP Z230 workstation with preinstalled Windows7. The machine has one 250GB SSD. I have made a clean install of Windows 8.1 and now I connected another SSD (Samsung EVO 500 GB). What bothers me is that Samsung Magician tells me that EVO is running in IDE or RAID mode (no AHCI). Is it safe for me to go to HP Setup utility/STORAGE OPTIONS and change Emulation from IDE to AHCI? I obviously do not want to cause any harm. EVO will be used just for data storage.
    Current settings:
    eSATA Port: Disabled
    SATA Emulation: IDE
    Removable media Boot: Enabled
    Max eSATA Speed: 1.5 Gbps
While there, is it safe to enable eSATA Port and increase Max eSATA Speed to 3Gbps (using external Verbatim 53029 500GB from time to time) Thank you!

The mobo was released very long time ago (it doesn?t even support SATA II lol) and BIOS update would likely to solve the BSOD problems but there's no way I'm risking it lol.
My system is running perfectly (well, near perfect lol) and haven?t suffered from any virus attack for more then two years (however, I am aware of the risks)
I'm trying to keep my system in order until next July where I have to perform a major upgrade and install Vista Home Premium (OEM version of cause) but until then, I?m stuck with SPa.
PS: I know IE7 and WMP requires SP2 but I don?t use those anyway lol.Message Edited by XVN5 on -05-200606:4 AM

  • P35 Neo - detecting SATA and IDE

i just bought the new mainboard P35 Neo, i mount it and is everything done and intalled with Windows XP professional.
i was thinking changing to ubuntu and/or trying Windows Vista, BUT... i got a problem:
    1) my DVD drive are not detected by my mainboard  ,in the manual says "Due to the IDE1 & SATA7 is controlled by Marvell 88SE6111, the BIOS will not detect the IDE & SATA device and will not show the status"
is it possible to be detected? so i can boot with windows vista dvd or with ubuntu dvd to format the disk and to install a new OS.
my computer configuration (if this helps  :azn: ):
     - Intel Duo-Core 2 at 2.13GHz - 1066MHz FSB - 4 MB L2 Cache
     - Graphic Card - Asus EN8600GT
     - 2 Gbs Memory DDR2
     - 320 Gbs HD SATA
     - mouse keyboard and screen  LOL
     - and OF COURSE the mainboard MSI P35 Neo

    Hello!
I am having the exact problem the topic starter has, so i figured i should just continue this topic.
    Here goes.
    My system:
    -MSI P35 Neo, BIOS 1.0
    -Intel Core Duo 2 E6750
    -Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X2048-6400C4
-XFX GeForce 8800 GTS 320 Mt
    -Antec Earthpower 500W
    -2x Samsung SpinPoint T166 500GB SATA (SATA 1&2)
-Samsung DVD+/-RW DL RAM 18X IDE Bulk (IDE Master)
-Windows Vista (once it gets installed)
This system was build from scratch, so i don't have an existing OS.
If i go to BIOS i see my 2x SATA hard drives and the IDE DVD drive in the boot Sequence menu, But once i try to launch the vista installation it appears the DVD drive in not recognized. I can check this by pressing F11 during boot and the DVD drive is not listed, only the hard drives are there.
    So my questions would be:
    1) Is it possible to somehow start the OS installation with this configuration?
    2) If not, would it help if i replaced the IDE burner with a SATA DVD Burner?
    3) Would an BIOS update to 1.3 have any effect on the DVD Drive being detected?
    4) If it came to that, what would be the best method to update the BIOS? I don't have an Floppy drive mounted or an OS for that matter.
Those are some questions that come to mind, so ill update if I figure out more of them.
