Advice on setup of new mini w/4 Tb LaCie 2Big thunderbolt drive

I'd like to use this primarily as a photo editing workstation. It will be connected to a 27" Thunderbolt Display and will be wirelessly networked to a 4th generation time capsule. It will use Aperture, Photoshop and Lightroom applications and I would like to explore the  possible setup options I may have available.

The LaCie 2Big comes pre-formatted as HFS+ Journaled, and is already pre-configured as a striped RAID set (RAID 0) for maximum performance. This is mentioned in the online manual for this device. The price for speed is lost redundancy.
If you want greater data protection through drive redundancy, then LaCie suggests reconfiguring the 2Big into a mirrored RAID set (RAID 1) using Disk Utility. As your data is written to the first drive, it is automatically written to the second drive. If one drive fails, the data remains duplicated on the surviving drive.
With the preceding redundancy, you may wish to relegate TimeCapsule to just backing up your home directory. If you sought triple-redundancy for your media work, TimeCapsule would be spending significant time backing up those large, changing Lightroom catalogs via wireless.
I believe that the Thunderbolt display has its own internal Thunderbolt cable, in addition to the Thunderbolt port. Certainly does not state a Thunderbolt cable is included. You would need to purchase an additional Thunderbolt cable for the LaCie 2Big. Then, it probaby would be your preference as to Thunderbolt chaining.
If you haven't already, the mini should have 8 - 16GB of memory. This will bring the HD4000 up to 512MB VRAM.
Paired with the quad-core i7 and a SSD for the system disk would make for a snappy unit, especially for thread-aware applications like Photoshop.

  • TS3297 Hi, I've setup my new mini ipad today, restored a backup from icloud and all is fine.  However, when I try to download my music, they almost completely download then an error message pops up saying "unable to download songs" - can anyone help pleas

Hi, I've setup my new mini ipad today, restored a backup from icloud and all is fine.  However, when I try to download my music, they almost completely download then an error message pops up saying "unable to download songs" - can anyone help please?

So it appears iCloud/iTunes Match isn't the issue - the error message would seem to be complaining about where the music is being downloaded to. So with this in mind:
In iTunes select Preferences and select Advanced. The iTunes media folder should be set to /Users/<your account>/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music. <your account> would be whatever your user account is. If you see something else there I'd guessing it is a folder you don't have permission to write to.

  • Can I run an external display off the new LaCie 2Big Thunderbolt.

I currently run FCP 7 on a brand new MacBook Pro. I use the Thunderbolt port into a Thunderbolt to VGA adapter (third party) to run an external Asis 27" display. It all works quite well. But...
Right now I use a LaCie d2 Firewire 800 external HD as my scratch but would like to upgrade to the new LaCie 2Big Thunderbolt. I want to then run my external display (still using the adapter) off the second Thunderbolt port on the 2Big. Is this possible? My local Apple authorized store was very sceptical although they had never tested it, in fact, they haven't even sold a 2Big yet.
Has anyone done this? Am I going in the right direction. I don't want to pop for the 2Big (+$500) and find out the setup can't be done.
    Thanks

Yes, I've demo'd this a lot.  Thunderbolt out of a computer, to the drive, looped to a monitor.  AND!!  Thunderbolt to an AJA IoXT for broadcast monitoring, back out to the drive, then the drive to a computer display.
Boggles the mind, but it works

  • How do I setup a new Mini IPad using ICloud backup from my IPad 2?

I have an ipad2 which has cloud backup - I have bought an IPad mini an d when I tried to setup using the backup from Cloud, because the Mini did not have the latest iOS, it would not allow the backup. I then used iTunes to setup and upgraded the software, but now I would like to access Cloud so that I can restore the Apps, photos, music, and data. Do I have to reset the Mini, and if so, will the upgraded iOS be retained so I can access the Cloud. Alternatively if I synch with my computer, is that going to be the most efficient method.

  • Firewire 800 port on new MBP not mounting Lacie rugged 500GB drive

    Hi all
I've just purchased the new MBP 17" and my Lacie Rugged 500GB drive will not mount.
It will mount over USB though.
I've tried three different FW800 cables and no result.
There are some posts around 10.5.7 update issues, but I've tried everything listed and no dice.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I had a Western Digital My Passport Studio model like that. It has nothing to do with cables or your laptop. It has to do with manufacturers who fail to adhere to the proper power standards for the interface. Basically, if the drive demands more power then the port will give, it is never going to work.
I returned my WD to Apple for a refund, and instead tried a SeaGate FreeAgent Go firewire 800 drive. It has worked flawlessly over Firewire on my MacBook Pro, and it even came with both a Fire 800 cable, a firewire 800-to-400 cable, a USB cable, and a special USB power cable so you could draw additional power off the USB ports if a firewire 800 port wasn't putting out sufficient power. That's why I bought it - figured one way or another it had to be able to work on bus power (even if it had taken both the firewire and USB bus in combo to do it).
Another option I've had good luck with in the past is OWC Mercury on the Go drives (eshop.macsales.com). These have always worked fine on bus power for me, but they also have an optional external power supply too, just in case.

  • Use iPod Touch 4th gen iTunes backup to setup a new iPad Mini 1 - issues

    Hi all,
I've just used my Pod Touch 4th gen iTunes backup to setup a new iPad Mini 1 but none of the apps were installed on the iPad mini. Only the default apps are installed.
None of the photos from the camera roll were installed either, apart from a few 'screen shots' I have taken.
iPod Touch is iOS 6.1.6 and the iPad mini is 8.1
There was a warning advising that some of the apps in the iPod backup might not be compatible with the iPad.
If it makes a difference, I'm using one Apple ID for the App store and another one for iCloud. When I was prompted for the Apple ID during setup on the Mini, I entered the iCloud ID.
Interestingly, when I went into the App store on the Mini it showed the ID I use for that rather than the iCloud one, which seemed good.
Is this what I should expect to happen in this situation or am I doing something wrong ?
    Many thanks. Mark

I've managed to get the apps loaded without having to do it manualy !! :-)
It was a case of RTFM - I forgot to do a 'Sync' after restoring the 4G's iTunes backup into the iPad.
Transfer content from an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to a new device - Apple Support
For some unknown reason, the Camera Roll images and Videos still weren't restored to the new device.
This is not too much of an issue because I've exported them out of the 4G using the awesome 'Photo Sync' app. Despite it's name it actually does an 'export'and not a sync, which I think makes image management easier on the PC side

By mistake i setup my new iPad mini with my iPad instead of a new iPad what can i do?
I use them for diferentes Things what can i do to reverse my mistake???

Go into the settings, reset, erase all content and settings. Which puts it back to 'out of box' state, then go back in and go through your set up but this time choose the 'set up as new' option.

  • IPad 2, restore & setup as new, then restore from backup?

    Confused yet? I am!
So here we go, yes, I'm new to the forum, I've had my iPad 2 since Oct. 2011. And No, this problem isn't in my head.
Last week, I finally updated to iOS 5.1.1, and I deeply regret doing so. I had NO issue before the update, and now, my battery is garbage.
I used to be able to go 2 - 3 days before having to charge and that's with an average of 4 hours a day. Now, after just a few hours (5) I have to charge and it takes forever. I've been working with Apple, but they having given me an option I'm happy with.
    1) Mail my unit back to them to switch out with a refurb. I am against this option as I like my unit. I didn't originally buy a refurb and I should have to accept one now. The screen on my unit is perfect, no bleed or dead pixels. I've taken immaculate care of mine and I'm afraid I'll get a unit I'm not happy with. Plus, it will be running iOS 6, which I'm not ready for.
Option two is...and this needs to be done whether I return my unit or not, is a restore and setup as new. Which means I would loose all my information buried deep within my apps. This would also install iOS 6 on my unit.
    My question is this...
If I do a Restore, Setup as new, can I then go back in and do a restore from back up, to put all my stuff back in its place.
I'd love to hear from anyone that has any insight, suggestions, experience, or comments about this.
    How did you handle it?
    What was the outcome?
Did you involve Apple in the resolution?
    Or,
Is it just not worth dealing with and I should just keep using it until it won't take a charge.
I know there have been a million posts about this, and I've read a lot of them, but I just haven't found a solution yet.
And before anyone states the obvious, ALL locations are off, all email accounts are set to manual, there are no notifications set.
In the past week, I've done 3 reset all settings, drained battery until system shut down, and did an uninterrupted full charge.
I've reset network settings. I make sure apps are closed by double tapping Home button, and done a hard reset by holding power button and home button until apple icon appears. I'm at a loss, and don't know what else to do.

First, make sure you are using the most current version of iTunes 11.1.3 (8).  Second, what version of iOS 7 was your old phone running, i.e. 7.0, 7.0.1, 7.0.2? If your back-up was made with a version of iOS that is newer than the version on your new phone, it will not sync. For example, if your back-up was of a phone running iOS 7.0.4, and your new phone was running 7.0.2 out of the box, the back up will not sync to the new phone until it is updated to iOS 7.0.4.

  • "Setup as new" - will it erase it?

I am sure I'd previously connected my iPad Mini to this laptop, but iTunes is giving me the "Welcome to your new iPad".
I've spent ages googling this and...
Half of the Internet says that 'Setup as new' does nothing but tell it you don't want to use a backup to set it up. Which makes sense.
The rest of the Internet is adamant that it will wipe everything and that you should right click and transfer purchases (however, this is not an option if its wanting you to set it up as new - just Eject or Restore from Backup).
I'm tempted to go with Setup as new, but there are even people on this board who say it wipes it blank...

    Setup as New
    1. Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and settings
    2. You'll be asked twice to confirm
    3. You'll see Apple logo and progress bar
    4. You'll see a big iPad logo on screen
    5. Configuration start
    6. Set language
    7. Set country
    8. Select Network and input Password>Join
    9. Enable Location Service>Next
    10. You'll be given 3 options (a) Setup as New iPad (b) Restore from iCloud Backup (c) Restore from iTune Backup
    11. Select Setup as New iPad

  • Did restore, pc froze, rebooted, auto-synced to another account-needed to "setup as new" - how to get contacts back?!

okay...2 days ago the iPhone 4 vibrated for a good 45 min. did a hard reboot on the phone, stopped vibrating, locked on call screen, can't answer or recieve calls. Talked to a tech support last night. Was told to do a restore, saved all of what we could beforehand and after it was done with restoring to click on "Setup as new" opt. I did so, my pc froze while it was syncing the apps through iTunes so I had to reboot. Without realizing I didn't unplug the phone it auto-Synced into another iTunes account and contacts, etc. I NEED the previous contacts that were saved last night on this phone! How do I back to "set up as new"? or get those contacts back?!

    Hi Becki ..
You need to "authorize" the Mac.
Launch iTunes on the Mac then from the iTunes menu bar top of your screen click Store > Authorize This Computer.
Now, using the same Apple ID as you used to purchased iTunes media originally, you should be able to sync all your content.

  • Can I use my old MAC MINI as a hard drive, or do I need to transfer all the data to a new Mini?

I would like to get the new MAC MINI, but I was wondering whether I could somehow just keep my old mac mini as a storage drive and continue to use its DVD drive since the new mini doesn't have one.  Has anyone out there done this?  If not, what is the best way to transfer data from one mini to another?

  • I'm trying to setup my new iphone and the Apple ID it asks for is my friends old Apple ID that she no longer has access to. How can I fix this?

I'm trying to setup my new iphone and the Apple ID it asks for is my friends old Apple ID that she no longer has access to. How can I fix this so I can use my new phone? The first step asks for my iCloud info but then asks for my friends after I agree to the terms.

The iPhone is new, has never been used. When asked if I want to set it up as a new phone, restore from an iTunes backup, or my iCloud backup I selected iCloud. It then askes for me to sign in with my Apple ID, I then agree to the terms, then it asks for me to sign into my friends Apple ID. She and I have used each other's computers in the past so I assume this is where her information is coming from. The problem is she no longer had that email or Apple ID and has no way of gaining access to it and therefor I am unable to proceed.
I suppose my question is, how can I remove her information from mine so I can setup my new phone using iCloud. Also, I have already checked my Apple ID online and nowhere on my account is her information listed.

  • Migration woes (mail in particular) PPC iMac w/ 10.3.9 to new Mini w/10.5.4

Me: mac user for 20 years.. web master, and unix not-quite-guru .. so don't be shy and no need to use small words in suggesting a remedy.. at this point I'll hexedit raw HD sectors if I have to...
Mother has an aging iMac, Power PC, one of the "lamp" style.. which has only a CDRW drive, so w got her a new Intel Mac Mini for xmas.
Brought a Firewire cable along and figured Migration Asst would do the job, read a few web pages about it last week in preparation, or so I thought.
Booted her new Mini and opted to transfer data from another Mac... as directed, I rebooted the old iMac with T and saw the Firewire symbol dance around its screen.. I believe at some point it settled into the center and stopped moving.
The new Mini would not recognize it.. giving an error message along the lines of "there are no OS X volumes".. which is patently untrue since she is running 10.3.9 on the iMac (there is an old 9.2.2 System folder there too). 10.3.9 was selected as the "blessed" Startup folder.
So I saw the ethernet option and thought "aha, we'll skin this cat that way instead".. connected the ethernet cable and got the helpful instruction to insert the Install Disc #1 and copy Setup Asst over to the old iMac and then enter a 6? digit code to authenticate.. ok, nice idea, except the install disc is a DVD (dual layer at that I think) and the old iMac can't read DVD (smack some co-op at Apple for not considering that).. even worse, despite 15 minutes of searching I could not simply find this application anywhere on the Apple site for download directly to the old iMac....
so abandoning those ideas, I found a knowledgebase article about migrating manually.. so I continued the new user acct setup on the Mini and got that finished.. then launched the migration asst on the new Mini (from the Utilities folder) and it took quite a while, but finally the HD in the iMac appeared (the old iMac has one and only one drive, the original internal one).
So I copied her photos, music, addr book, ical, mail, bookmarks, keychains, etc info over.. and per the KB I copied the mail plist file from prefs.. the KB says that is all I would need and Mail "will do the rest"...
Not so much... I can see her saved mail folders on the new Mini.. .and I can see in Finder and in Terminal that they should contain old mail (~50 MB worth, these folders exist and are very non-empty).... but inside Mail, no messages appear at all, nor her Inbox (ie. mail she had downloaded already on the old iMac, but not yet saved to a folder, nor deleted)
I am totally at wits end.. ideas?

So in the end, I erased all the Mail I copied over originally, and the prefs file, and started a new acct with her info and imported all her old mailboxes (having saved her old Inbox to a "savedinbox" mailbox, in case Inbox importing didn't work).
Gotta say, couldn't have been more disappointed with the Migration Assistant, which in the end did not a bloody thing for the transition. Thankfully her usage of the old iMac was simple and not that many files... one would think it would be the easy and ideal case for Migration assistant to handle.
I'm marking this as answered only b/c I'm not going back to do this again.. she is up and working and I won't know if any proposed solution actually works.

  • HoW DO YOU SETUP A NEW wINDOW 7 64 BIT PC FOR ITUNES AND MOVE EVERYTHING OVER FROM AN OLD PC

How do you setup a new windox 7 64 bit pc for itunes (which documetns folder does the file need placed in and then move everything over from your old pc (which is windows xp)?

I am pretty disappointed in the lack of documentation.
This is the Apple Support page for Boot Camp:
    http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
No mention anywhere of Lion, of 4.0/4.01
In the past, 10.6.6+ was suppose to - and sometimes did - provide for a download drivers from within Boot Camp Assistant program, in order to save them to flash or such (that should be about 1GB, too large for CD). Some macs req'd a USB-DVD or other driver that was needed pre-install of Winidows
You don't install Apple drivers until after Windows is installed otherwise,
It is possible for me, with a tower, to run w/o needing any drivers from Apple. But with laptops, mini, you do need some drivers from Apple for graphics, internet, wireless, SMC support.
And right now, loading any Apple support Tech Note articles is very very slow.
People keep asking why Apple can't post 3.0 or 4.0 like they do the updates. Only logic is to force t he download from inside OS X or from an OS X DVD. Otherwise would be here, and avoid all the trouble. they aren't of use on a PC, and any PC motherboard vendor does post their support software for download.

  • HT1535 I just started my new mini IPad, and when I clicked the network, my connect to iTunes went off, now I can't move on or get that connect to iTunes back on the screen so that I keep going

IT is so frustrating, because I cannot go further without being connected to iTunes..it's a brand new mini IPad, and I gave the network and then the iTunes thing to press to connect disappeared...HELP!

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
