Advice on using Portal Pages

Hello,
Here is our situation. We have a portal application, and logically, we have around
20 different "pages" that have the same layout (custom left nav, body in the center,
than a right hand nav that various portlets can be dropped in).
Functionality may be similar to this:
1. If a user views page X, we should show portlets A, B in the right nav.
2. If a user views page Y, we should show portlets C, D in the right nav.
3. etc.
So even though all the pages have the same layouts, they may place different portlets
in the right hand section.
It seems to me, that because of this desired functionality, we would have to use
a different Portal page for each of our pages (even though they all use the same
layout). Do we need different pages because we want different portal placements
in the right hand nav section?
Or is there a way to re-use the same page, and somehow programmatically state "If
we are viewing page X in the middle section, display portlets A, B on the right,
etc.".
I would like to avoid creating potentially dozens of portal pages because it may
be a maintainability issue.
Thanks,
Will Young

Will,
Can you explain your situation a little more. As far as I can tell you
have 3 sections of your site. A left nav that has no portlets, a body
full of portlets and a right side with portlets also?
Or does your body not contain portlets?
I'd like to help, and think I can but I'm not sure I understand
exactly your problem.

  • How to cache portal pages using VSAT

We have a big customer who is using portal via vSAT. on the other end of the vsat customer has caching box, which will cache all the GIF's, CSS, HTML and other static.
When we use portal through vSAT, Portal generates every page with pragma no-cache and because of this reason the caching box (on the other end of VSAT) ia not caching. And every user request is coming to 9iAs application server.
This is having huge impact on performance.. I am wondering if anybody have any tips to solve this problem.

  • Can I use a standard Portal page as Single Sign-On page?

    Hi all
IHAC that would like to be able to maintain the login page. I have told them that it might be difficult as the login page is a jsp file and not a standard portal page. So now I'm wondering if it would be possible to create a standard portal page with a standard login portlet and use this as a login page. I have tried creating a page and updated WWSSO_LS_CONFIGURATION_INFO$ but no luck :-(
    Environment: OracleAS 10g R2 (10.1.2.0.2)
    Thanks in advance
    Claus

    Yes. that makes sense :-)
I'm afraid that you will be unable to replace the current SSO JSP page with a portal page. The SSO JSP not only draws the login screen, it also generates the site2pstoretoken for you. This is necessary for the login process to complete.
What about having a public page with a page link to a customized portal page with login portlet to replace the SSO page?

  • How to load use an image library in the portal pages

    Hi,
How to load an image library in the portal ? Do I need to load images in an Apache directory and access them via URLs, or do I need to upload images to a specific portal page, and access these images via specific URL ?
    Thanks for your help,
    Jean-Christophe

Another easy method is to create a dedicated page in Portal and use it for the storage of images, flash objects.
Load the images as item type FILE and use the 'direct access' method (HOST:PORT/pls/<DAD>/docs/PAGE/<PG NAME>/<PAGE_NAME>/IMAGE.GIF)to access the file from a URL command.
This way all your images are protected in the database, easy to add and find (via search or by adding descriptions, categories etc) via role based security and in theory should be quicker to access (via the URL) due to the indexing capabilities of the database.
Place the images in a location that is not going to cause a page navigation issue such as in its own Page Group or as sibling page to your top level parent page etc.
    Hope this helps.

  • Advantages of using Portal in HCM implementation

    Dear all,
I need to implement HCM in one of our existing SAP ERP R3 4.7 systems. I also need to get my ESS to be published as a webpage for all my employees at different geographical locations. Please advice me on the advantages and dis-advantages of the scenarios explained below.
Scenario 1: Only using ITS (Internet Transaction Server)
I need to publish my portal page in the web, so I install HR support packages in the ERP system and also deploy the ESS component. I install a standalone ITS system on a separate machine and integrate the same with the ERP system. Now the HR-ESS component is distributed over the web through the ITS. SAP transactions are displayed over the web and the ESS component is used through a web browser.
Scenario 2: Using ITS and a Portal System
I implement the HR support packages in the ERP system, install and configure the ITS, implement a three system portal landscape (NW 04 EP 6.0 SR1) Publish the portal page over the web and enhance the ESS application through the same. Here the ERP system acts as the backend for the portal system.
I also have a doubt regarding the same. As SAP ERP R3 4.7 does not have an inbuilt ITS, is it necessary for me to install and configure a standalone ITS for the interconnectivity between the ERP and the Portal systems?
Kindly help me with the suggestions.
    Thank you

hello, the LM3S8962 microcontroller is a good sispositivos for developing applications of medium complexity, according to your questions:
    1. if you work applications with embedded systems will save labview time in prototyping, we know that if you work with a company specific microcontroller, you must learn the language with which you are working Asm, Basic, C, then if you change hardware again start adapting your code in the libraries of the new compiler. Labview does not happen.
    2. Labview only works with some microcontroller manufacturers and specific models.

  • Migrate a single Portal page.

I created a new single portal page in development environment, now I have to migrate it to our test environment. Usually, I do the same work again in test environment as I do in development. This really takes me a long time to do the duplicate task. So is there any easy way to do this migration?
    Thanks

    Hi Arnaud,
Don't recall that we ever investigated a threshold value where portal was not performing anymore. It also depends on other circumstances as well :
    - what kind of caching is used on the page, i.e. pages cached on system level for a period of 24 hours will generally perform well, even if they have a large number of file items. The performance penalty is paid by the person who needs to generate the page from the back-end database.
    - Are all files in a single region or are they divided over several regions. I seem to recall that we use a fetcher thread for each region.
    My advice :
Built a prototype, add file items to a page and start load tests. This will allow you to determine how many files can be added to a page without an unacceptable loss of performance.

  • Publishing content from reports server to a portal page

I have a system with Forms/Reports 6i in a client/server implementation. I have 6i reports server from this on the server tier. I have added 9iAS (minimal install) to get Portal and HTTP server. I have completed the configuration and I can have the portal page submit jobs to the reports server and they are displayed properly.
But I also wish to run reports from the application. This app submits jobs to the reports server via RWCLI60. I was hoping I could use 'File' as the destype and drop off content into a directory the web server knows about and then have a portal page that will generate links to the files. These could be pdf or html output.
Can anyone tell me if this is possible and provide a short list of steps to configure it? Thanks.

there is an example of this on dev2dev, see sample code, "redirect" example

  • How to change one iView to another in portal page by clicking the third one

    Hi all!
I have created four iViews: two speedometers with web application designer and two iViews with visual composer. I added the speedometers and a visual composer iView #1 to a portal page (default view). The requirement is that by clicking the speedometer #2, the visual composer iView #2 would replace visual composer iView #1 on the portal page. If the user then would select the speedometer #1 again by clicking it, visual composer iView #2 would replace #1 again and so on.
I have read article http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/50b65a5d-f397-2910-a78a-f5544f21c33b?QuickLink=index&overridelayout=true, but it is more about filtering VC iView values with BI web items. I don't need to filter anything, just to change one iView to another in a portal view by clicking a third one.
I have thought of placing two VC iView to a same portal page area and defining one of the to be visible and another hidden (by clicking speedometers these properties would change), but I haven't found the way how that could be done in portal. Is there a way to define some OnClick-method to change visibility parameters or url-address of another iView?
One solution might be¨on the other hand to transfer any value to VC by clicking a speedometer and to change the visibility of the VC iViews according to that value (the speedometer #1 should in that case transfer other value to VC than speedometer #2). I don't know if that is possible with speedometers - you can't reference any characteristics or variables with it.
If you have an idea, what would be the best way to accomplish this requirement, I would be very glad to hear about it! We are in VC 7.0.
    Points garanteed!
    Regards
    Sari

    Hi,
In the portal, create a page and place the iView having the three input fields on top. Place the second iView below. Keep differing the second iView for every page. In this way you can make the iView with 3 input fields only in the desired pages. You can use EPCF to invoke / navigate to another iView.

  • How to show or hide portlets dynamically on a Portal Page

    Dear All
    1. I have a Portal Page with One Portlet in the top having like 5 Buttons. Each button click should display a separate portlet in the bottom on this same page.
    2. I have Top Portlet. For bottom I have 5 Portlets P1, P2, P3, P4 and P5. On my .portal file, I dragged and dropped top portlet and all these 5 Portlets one below each other.
    3. Now, I am trying to use BackingFile approach at PageLevel/Portlet level, to get the details of button clicked in top portlet (like name etc), and then show only one portlet at a time in the bottom section (using portlet backingcontext show/hide APIs). I do need to compare the bottom portlets defintion_label etc. which is fine for now.
    Is this the right approach...?
Or do I have to use Portlet Custom Event approach. So top portlet will trigger event everytime button is clicked with some payload. And bottom 5 portlets listen to that event and show/hide accordingly. But in this approach, I have to attach backingfile to all the bottom portlets to listen to them.
All the portlets are Pageflow based Portlets. Any ideas or any other simpler approaches, are highly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Ravi Jegga

    Hi Kevin
    1. Thanks a lot for the pointers. I will go with Events. So for bottom Portlets, I will use the same BackingFile. But still it is going to be custom Event. Because only one portlet will be shown. So its like my payload will be portlet def label. In Backing File, I will compare this payload with actual dynamic value and if same, show or hide that portlet. Please let me know if this is correct approach.
    2. Now each one of the Bottom Portlets is a complex pageflow portlet with many buttons of their own. So everytime a button is clicked or action is invoked, the Backing File gets called. And I had to somehow know that the same portlet has to be shown or the show/hide logic should not be called. Is there any way, where backing file gets called or just listen for Events triggered only from main top portlet.
Thanks for the other message, where looks like you already gave lots of pointers. I will go through them.
I will design and test this out and will keep you posted with my results.
    Thanks a lot again

  • Refreshing a single portlet rather than the whole portal page

    Ok, here's my situation.
I have two pdk portlets on my portal that communicate through page parameters. Portlet A has a bunch of search fields, a customer drop-down list, parts drop-down list, division, etc. Portlet B takes those parameters, queries the database, and displays the results. I would like to be able to refresh portlet B without reloading the whole portal page.
I have onchange events on all of my drop-downs that will do a javascript post back to portal, which will in turn set my page parameters, and I see there is a 'refreshPortlet' function in a javascript file that portal provides that will refresh a single portlet based on a portletReferenceId. It is normally called when a refresh button is clicked in the portlet header, but I don't see any reason I can't call it after my javascript post, that is, if I had the portletReferenceId for the other portlet. I thought about making a hidden html table on the page that, I could fill with the portlet names and ids for each portlet as they load, that way I could reference that list from any portlet. The problem is I can't figure out where the ids are coming from. Based on the code behind the button, the function is looking for something like this 646_701285_646_1_701271, but the closest thing I can come up with is this 676114_POSTCONTENTPORTLET_467414915 which I got from PortletRenderRequest.getPortletInstance().getInstanceName(). As you can see, it's not even close. Does anyone know where the correct id could be coming from? It's got to be available to me somewhere, doesn't it?
The only other option I can think of to accomplish my goal is to use straight up ajax to display portlet B, but that kind of defeats the purpose of portal doesn't it?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Doug

You can use Ctrl+F4 to close the current tab. I don't think that you can change the Alt+F4 action with Keyconfig.

  • Copy a file from server to the client - URLConnection to a Portal page

    Hello:
I have an application running on the client side. When the app startup it must open a file which is at the server side, to be more specific, the file is at KM content of the portal.
I try to read it with URLConnection to copy the file from the server to the client, the app will do it, but "Server returned HTTP response code: 401 for URL:"
If you copy&paste the url's file directly on the browser (http://host:port/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/com.sap.km.cm.docs/ImagenesIM/file.txt) a login popup (look and feel windows) is display. After entering the user and psw the file is open without problem.
Any idea what can I use or how do it ?.
I think that probably I have to move the app to a was directory instead of portal directory.
The app is execute via *.jnlp with a link at a portal page.
Thanks a lot for your time.

    Javier,
401 means authentication error, i.e. your application is not authenticated to KM.
What you can do? Actually, it depends. Check current cookies in your application, probably there are SSO coockie or J2EE authentication cookie. You may try to set this cookies in URLConnection (via addHeader). Otherwise you have to supply authentication creadentials to URLConnection (also via addHeader, most probably, via Basic HTTP authentication scheme).

  • How can i create a simple netweaver portal page that shows text and images?

    Hi,
i have a simple question or maybe it's not so simple.
I am completly new to SAP Netweaver 2004s Portal. At the moment i'm trying to understand the struture of the whole thing. I already know how to create roles, worksets and pages and i know how to combine the different elements so a user can acces them.
And now i want to create a simple portal page that shows text and images. Is it possible to create such a simple page with the portal content studio? What iView do i have to use?
(I just want to create a start page with a welcome text on it.)

    Marc
Considering that you would any ways go ahead with complex development from this simple start page I recommend create a Web dynpro Iview for your start page (include the Iview in your page).
For putting the contents use Netweaver Developer studio to build a simple start page application and put your static text on that Iview.
Please go through the following log after your NWDS development is over - This will make you comfortable for further challenging work.
