Advice on vinyl restoration

Any advice regarding dos and don'ts with vinyl restoration?
Apart from de-noising and removing pops and clicks, how common and/or desirable is it to equalize and/or compress? I am not thinking of good-sounding vinyl, but of old recordings that sound thin. Also, regarding live recordings, does anyone eliminate noises (i.e. clinking glasses, etc) or are they generally left in the recording for authenticity?

>Apart from de-noising and removing pops and clicks, how common and/or desirable is it to equalize and/or compress? I am not thinking of good-sounding vinyl, but of old recordings that sound thin.
It's not able to be determined as a matter of principle; you have to determine what works best in individual cases. If you think that you can make a material improvement to a recording, then there's absolutely no reason why not to, IMHO, but beware - not everybody agrees about this by any means.
>Also, regarding live recordings, does anyone eliminate noises (i.e. clinking glasses, etc) or are they generally left in the recording for authenticity?
It all depends on the recording, how intrusive the unwanted sound is, and whether you could remove the noises without detriment to the wanted sound (being able to do this well is rare, in my experience...). So most of the time they get left in. I don't know about 'authenticity', but it certainly adds to an air of verisimilitude, especially if an audience was present. But even when there isn't one, you still get problems with this. I regularly get plagued with organ action and wind noise, plus other noises-off, on recordings and even if I reduce some of these sounds, I wouldn't take them out altogether, even if I was able to. Because even though it's not 'wanted' sound in the strictest sense, it's a very real part of the
actual sound of the instrument - which some people like, and others don't. It's a no-win situation in many ways. Ho hum...

  • I was given some advice here to restore my macbook OS that was having a glitch I now realize was nothing, by sliding in the original OSX disk at start up and holding the C key down?

So now my problem is herindous, my mac is crashed and it says I need to click repair disk if repair fails back up and erase the disc?
I have limited access to anything and would like to know how to back it up if possible, I have bought a 500G seagate, but nothing seems to be working
I have the snow leopard disc in it and it is open with Disc Utility, the repair disc did not work so I need to back up and erase, BUT HOW?
Please any one with some competence as far as knowing what they are talking about so I can get off this DELL Windows laptop, It's miserable!
Please good reliable advice needed with step by step blows for recovery, I have the MAC OS X Installer  open showing both the Macintosh HD and the FreeAge Drive side by side,
Can I just load the Snow Leopard on the Freeagent and operate my computer like that to get by?
    HELP PLEASE?
Sound confusing, I have been at it over 18 hours now with all involved and pulling my hair out!
Sincerely grateful for some reliable advice from a mac expert!

Me again, I am not rushing here for the obvious reasons, I dont expect to hear from you tonight (so late) hopefully 2marrow.
Thinking closer about the way you worded it I dont think I actually booted of the disk, rather just able to access (Mac OS X Installer) that further allows me to access through clicking on (Utilities),
(Disc Utility). With it open to begin the (Erase) of the free agent drive,
I click on (erase) and the options open to be chosen of Format:
included in those options I don't have what you listed for me to choose, the available options are:
    Mac OS Extended (journaled)
    Mac OS Extended
    Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitave,journaled)
    Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitave)
    MS-DOS (FAT)
And under that is a space for Name: and it could be anything of my choise it by default automatically put in (FREEAGENT G)
fURTHER DOWN AVAILABLE OPTIONS TO CLICK ON ARE
Securiety Options: That compile 4 ranging from Don't Erase Data / to a 35-Pass Zero Out Data
And finally the slightly smaller space available for me to click on that says (ERASE....) and it starts the scrub I figure.
Now that would be the first part of two I would need to complete to hopefully get off this Dell from Windows Haties!
Step 2) It would be nice if I could just drag the Mac OS x install DVD to the FreeAgent and it would load it, and maybe it's possible?? I know everything about nothing! Famously.
But the next possible options back in (DISC Utility) when I am clicked on (The install DVD) are first aid,   erase,   and  Restore
Then other options open to click on depending on what is chosen?
I am sorry to be so handy cap needy, with my long history of (if there is anything worse that can happen it will happen to me) as it does and I have to accept the fact It can always be worse! I know yah it could, but then all mighty God would no longer have me the human hamster to bowel and toss around, and would get bored.
***************So I guess the first Mystery here is where's the (GUID) PARTITION option?*************************
Ihave found an option under (RAID) that makes more available striped, Mirriored, and Concentrated (RAID Types)
With (Format:) options the same as I listed above
I do understand if your too busy and unable to get back as well,

  • TS3992 Okay followed your advice cleared and restored because apps would not download.  Restore was successful, however error is "Unable to Download Application" done or retry!  So now what?

Okay followed your advice on previous page to reset iPod Touch and restore because apps would not download updates.  Restore was successful, however app starts to load goes half way then freezes. Error message is "Unable to Download Application" Done or Retry buttons.  Neither one works.  So now what?  I have several financial apps that I need.  Please help!  Researched on net and seems to be a common problem.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
There seems to be rather more of this type of issue being reported currently, than there normally is, there may well be a problem with the servers. I would be inclined to wait a while, then try again later.

  • Help/advice needed - cannot restore iPod!

My iPod was working fine, until I tried to update it! Then my computer froze, and the iPod just showed the 'Do Not Disconnect' for hours. The iPod icon wasn't showing up in iTunes or on my desktop, so I disconnected it, and now I just get the little folder and exclamation point icon.
I have followed all the advice on the various Apple documents,, but every time I try to restore it, the update doesn't seem to recognise the iPod, and keeps telling me 'Plug in iPod', even though it is plugged in. I have tried using different USB ports, and the iPod does show up in My Computer (as Drive F), but the updater refuses to recognise it.
    I have tried -
    Resetting iPod
    Putting it into Disk Mode
Have reinstalled Itunes, and redownloaded the iPod updater. Have also tried using old updaters, as well as reinstalling off the original CD that came with the iPod.
Have installed Service Pack 2, run Scan Disk, disconnected firewalls, AVG anti-virus etc.
My iPod is fully charged, but when I turn it on I keep getting the Apple logo, then the folder/exclamation point icon.
    Any help/advice much appreciated!
    Thank you

Somebody please help. I'm trying hard not to sand in line at Sam's Club to return a 3 years old item. LOL. But at least I have this option. I'm grandfathered into their old return anytime policy.
I've tried formatting it, I can't even format it. Anybody?

  • Soliciting advice before attempting restore from backup

I sent my iMac into the shop (Tekserve in NYC) to swap out the original HD for a more spacious SSD. Tekserve advised they could not transfer the data over to the new drive. I had upgraded the drive to Yosemite and did a Time Machine backup the night before sending the machine in. What are the recommended steps to follow to help ensure the restore process goes well?

    Follow steps below.

  • Need some quick advice on a restore with Time Machine

I have just had my MacBook Pro wiped and reinstalled as there was a problem with the way it would 'see' the battery (there was an intermittent fault).
I think that this has been solved now. So now I want to reinstall the whole Time Machine backup = but NOT the faulty base settings (the Operating system, etc). Everything - applications, folders, settings , files etc. How do I do this?

  • 3rd gen touch rebooting constantly after DFU restore

I've spent a lot of time googling this problem, and found some advice in the forums here but nothing quite like my problem, so I joined up so I could hopefully get an answer.
I have a 3rd gen 32 GB, not jailbroken, that keeps restarting itself when plugged in. The battery died on it the other day and when I tried plugging it in to a computer to charge, it gave me the iTunes and USB logo saying that it needed to be restored.
I have gotten it into DFU mode and restored it, and got the messasge that it has been restored and to leave it plugged in. Then it restarted, stayed on the Apple logo for 20 or 30 seconds, went black, and started the reboot process again.
If I unplug it, it still will only make it to this point and then go black, but will only come back on when I hold the buttons down.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

You restored your computer without making sure everything was backed up?
The ipod touch will sync with one library at a time. a system restore constitutes a new library.
You should use your backup copy to put the music back. the ipod touch music sync is one way - computer to ipod.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup ( bad idea), then you can transfer itunes purchases from the ipod - without syncing - File>Transfer Purchases
At your risk, you can try a 3rd party program ( not endorsed or supported by Apple).

  • IPod corrupt, wont restore properly.

    Hello,
I've read through some of the FAQs and the questions posted on the board, but nothing seemed to help my problem.
I am using a Fifth generation iPod (photo). A few days ago when i plugged my iPod onto my comp, iTunes recognised it to be corrupted and adviced me to restore it. So i did, following which i was asked to plug my iPod to an external power supply. I did that as well. Then i plugged the iPod back into the pc to sync songs from iTunes into the iPod. However, iTunes still recognised it as corrupted. And then i go through the same process again and again.
I went to an authorised service centre today, they managed to restore it and sync some songs into the iPod. But when i plugged the iPod into my comp, it said it was Macintosh-formatted or something, and asked to restore the iPod. I did that and now i'm back at where i was, the whole reformatting cycle.
    Please help!
Before anyone asks, i just updated iTunes, and during the restore process 2, i allowed the bar to fill up first before removing it from the external plug.

*it said it was Macintosh-formatted or something, and asked to restore the iPod.*
The service center probably used a Mac to restore it. They should have asked you first.
Have you tried the basics? Did EVERYTHING work the way that it should have? If not, provide details.

  • How to full restore OS X state to a specific date from Time Machine backup?

Hello! Could someone please advice how to restore the state of my iMac to a specific date?
    NOT to the latest backup?

The only way I found to make a full restoration of OS X to specific date from a TM backup is to launch OS X in recovery mode (Cmd+R during startup) and then choose "Recover from Time Machine". Full restoration took approx 2 hours.
Dislike it very much. During my being a Windows user I could roll back in a matter of minutes with system utilities

  • IPhone 4S opening App Store in iPad's version.

So this is how it looks :<

Since you were so bold to Restore before, and since I am on a roll of giving bad advice, you could Restore again using iTunes and when asked at end of Restore to Set up iPhone as New. See if this helps, then use iTunes to Restore from Back Up to get your data back. See if anyone else has some good advice for you.

  • Some of my music won't download to my iphone.

I have 300 songs on my iTunes library and when I try to sync the music to my iPhone only 128 songs get synced onto it. Then this thing pops up and it says "error (-69)" And I made sure all the songs are checked and everything and I tryed restoring it a few times so I don't know what to do. I've never had problems downloading those songs either, like they were on my phone but now they won't download on it..

This is usually a bad file error:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302684
Hard discs can go bad, and it's quite possible yours is failing and having issues with this. My advice is to restore those songs from your backup and try again (but also check out your hard drive completely with a utility to make sure there aren't other problems with it).

  • Error message came up when i tried to upload music onto iPod

When I went to upload songs onto my ipod, itunes told me that there wasn't enough space on my ipod to hold all of my songs. i thought nothing of it so i just deleted some of the songs i didn't listen to anymore.
i went to re-upload my music and an error message popped up stating: "Songs on ipod cannot be synced because all of the playlists selected for syncing no longer exist".
    Any advice?
Would restoring my iPod fix this problem?
    Thanks!!!

i went to re-upload my music and an error message popped up stating: "Songs on ipod cannot be synced because all of the playlists selected for syncing no longer exist".
Plug the ipod in, and when it connects to iTunes go into your "Music" tab for the iPod.
Under "Sync Music" you will currently have "Selected playlists" selected. In the box under that, uncheck any playlists that currently do not exist in your iTunes Sourcelist.
At this point you could either select playlists that you do want to sync to the ipod ... or, if you've trimmed your library enough, you could just select "All songs and playlists" (up under "Sync Music"). Now click the Apply button and you should be syncing again.

  • ITunes logo and usb cord showing on iPad 2 after iOS 8.02 update

I updated my iPad 2 last night with ios8.02.   Immediately after the update, my iPad was frozen with the iTunes logo and power cord.  When I conned to iTunes, the error message says my iPad is set to recovery mode and when selecting the option to restore, the message "Are you sure you want to restore the iPad “iPad” to its factory settings? All of your media and other data will be erased, and the newest version of the iPad software will be installed" appears.
Well, I obviously do not want to lose the last photos of my mother who passed away on July 1st, not to mention the countless things included in the full 64 GB hard drive, so I called Apple support. Their advice was to restore and hope iCloud backup has the data.
I'm on hold right now waiting for a "Senior Advisor" to provide a solution.  I have been on hold for 49 min 58 seconds.
Does anyone have a fixe to this un-vetted upgrade release gaff? Whoever authorized this release needs to leave Apple and apply for a job selling popcorn with the LA Clippers.

    Hi,
I had the same problem for the past 24 hours.
I found the below advice resolved my problem completely.
Basically, rebooted mbp, restored iPad from previous back up = iPad 3 back to normal.
    Phew...that was a tad frightening !
    Hope it helps you....

  • Safari no longer works after iOS 8.2 update.

I installed the iOS 8.2 update and Safari will not work at all.  If I tap a bookmark, it just freezes.  If I manually enter a search term or a url it doesn't respond at all.  I read about some other (not the same) issues with Safari and the common advice was to restore from an iCloud backup, which I have done, to no avail.  Anyone else having the same issue?  Anyone else able to RESOLVE the same issue, and if so, HOW??

Do this and it should be back up and running.
    1. Backup your iphone to itunes.
    2. Then unplug the iphone from the computer and turn off your iphone
    3. Hold the home button (while the iphone is off) and plug the iphone back to the computer
    4. Restore the iphone using itunes via recovery mode (this will install a fresh set of firmware on your iphone)
    5. Put your files back on your iphone and that will work

  • How to improve the screen and audio quality on my Satellite c655-s5132

I recently bought a used Satellite C655-S5132 laptop.  Although this machine is designed to run on Windows 7, it came equipped with Windows XP.  The machine runs OK except for the screen which shows a distorted image and the sound which is tinny and low volume.
I suspect this is due to a software shortcoming rather than a defect in any of the hardware.  The image distortion may be due to the fact that this laptop comes with a wide screen with an aspect ratio of 6:9, whereas the Windows XP operating system that is currently installed on this laptop is set at an aspect ratio of 4:3 and doesn't allow me to switch to the other aspect ratio.
As a result, the image fills the entire screen but appears to be stretched horizontally.  As for the audio, I checked the volume settings and they are all set at their upper limit.
    I have done the following:
    1.  I did a system check which shows that there are 2 drivers that need to be updated: video controller and video controller (VGA compatible).  But when I prompt the machine to install updated drivers it gives me a failure code 28 "device not installed properly".
    2. I ran 2 driver software programs: one shows that for both video controllers "the manufacturer is unknown" and "drivers are not installed", and the second shows that the driver is installed but needs to be updated.
    3. Searched the web for the right drivers and found that for this machine running on Windows XP (32 bit), Intel produces a graphic driver, GMA 4500.
    4. I tried to download this driver from the Intel website but the installation process failed. Perhaps it failed because Toshiba has specified a custom version of this graphic driver that can only be downloaded from its own website.
    5. I searched the Toshiba website but was unable to identify the drivers for sound and image for this machine.
Could anyone help me find the right drivers on the Toshiba website that would allow me to: (i) change the setting for the aspect ratio and in doing so get rid of the image distortion, as well as improve the overal picture quality, and (ii) increase the audio volume and improve the overall sound quality?
    Thank you.

My advice is to restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media. All the drivers and utilities are properly preinstalled. Windows is preactivated.
You can obtain recovery discs from Toshiba. Scroll down to Get Recovery Media here .
For instructions, see the section Restoring from recovery DVDs/media, which begins on p. 71 of the User's Guide.
