Advice on where to keep photos

Besides using Time Machine, do most folks backup their photos elsewhere?
Since photos take up a lot of hard drive space, do most users store their photos on an external drive, or do they just use their computer's hard drive, and get more storage space or a bigger hard drive if needed?
I moved all my photos to a flash drive, and am finding that it takes forever to access the photos from there.

My Library lives on my Imac
It's backed up to two other hard drives every day - one by Time Machine, one by Carbon Copy Cloner
I keep a portable hard drive in my Car. That gets backed up to whenever I add new photos to the Library.
In a relatives house across town I keep another HD with the Library on it. That gets baked up twice a year - I'll be doing that chore this weekend.

Advice on Where to Keep My LR Photos

Earlier today I posted a question about moving my photos that I use with LR from an external drive to my computer's internal hard drive. Thinking was that this would then allow me to use the external drive for backup (which today I'm doing with DVDs).
But now I'm wondering if I should just leave the photos on the current external drive, and get a second drive for backup purposes (they've gotten pretty cheap), rather than introducing the photo files onto the computer's drive. The internal drive is 250gb, and isn't particularly full, but I'm just thinking that over time it may make more sense to leave that capacity free of NEF files, and keep them (and the backups) on external drives.
If I get second external drive, is it crazy to get a portable drive that can be kept out of the house, away from the "main" drive with all the "originals" on it?
Any thoughts here?
Also, what is the recommended number of pictures (if there is one) to limit a single catalog to?

Having over 1TeraByte of files, all I can say is that you MUST keep an offsite copy that you update regularly. If your hard drive crashes (and it eventually will), you want a backup SOMEWHERE.
I bought a 1TB external drive for $280 just last week... small change if I consider the amount of data involved and the sense of security that it provides. You can keep it at a friends house, your office, your rental storage, your safety deposit box, anywhere but the same location. At that point it becomes a simple backup issue, having nothing to do with LR.
Here is what I recommend that you do:
a) 'master' drives to keep your originals and your LR catalog backups.
b) 'backup' drives as needed to keep copies of your 'originals' drives
c) 'LR drive' to keep your catalogs and previews.
The biggest advantage to a separate LR drive is that you can easily move the catalog from one computer to another, something that is ridiculously complicated to keep organized if you are not keeping your catalog on an external drive. Also, you can take your whole catalog with you if needed... I am writing this at the Denver airport (coming back from a photo job) with LR running off a USB drive hooked up to my laptop... when I get home I will just move the originals to the 'originals' drive and point LR on this USB drive to the correct new location, and point the backup to the originals drive also.
How many catalogs?
Personally I think that putting all of your eggs in one basket is insane... I organize catalogs by general subject... it is much easier to keeping all the photos in one place when it comes to finding stuff.

I do NOT like using my credit card if I don't have to, and I went out of my way to go buy an Apple gift card, which I successfully redeemed into my Apple account. However, when I use the Apple "Cards" app, it will not let me use anything other than my credit card. I tried purchasing a card, hopefulling it would come out of my Apple store balance, but no such luck -- it came out of my credit card.
Apple is becoming more like Microsoft every day.

HT4927 When i upgraded from 9.2.3 to 9.3.1 I had migration issues, where most my photos ended up in a restored event called restored photos. But then they don't come up in faces anymore. So can i upgrade to 9.3.2 and then just rebuild my photo library ?

Best way is to restore your backup from before the problem, rebuild it and update it again

When viewing an album on the iPhone you can tap "Photos" at the bottom and that will show all photos by date. Unfortunately though it is all photos, not just the album you are currently viewing.
What I have done is the following. On the computer I have a main folder (e.g. iPhone photos) and then make sub-folders within that. Placing photos that will be synched to the iPhone into various subfolders gives quite a bit of organizational capablility. In iTunes when you select the main folder to sync, the sub-folders will show on the iPhone as separate albums. Beyond that, in one case where I really wanted a specific sort within an album I renamed the photos on the computer (something like A-picxxx, B-picxxx) so they sorted on the computer alphabetically in the order I want on the phone. That sort order was maintained after the sync.
Note that each time you sync using iTunes, the non-Camera Roll pictures on the phone will be set to match the current iTunes settings/photos -- so you can experiment.

If these were photos that were only in the Photostream folder of your Photos app, but not actually part of the Photostream itself, then the iCloud Photostream only holds the past 30 days of photos.
Use the iCloud Control Panel (if you're using Windows, download it here: iCloud for Windows - Apple Support), to see your actual iCloud Photostream.
Your device will hold the Photostream photos until they are removed, but you should never treat your device or the iCloud Photostream as permanent storage. You should be importing them to your computer on a regular basis for safe keeping.

Telling iPhoto where my original photos are

Hi Guys, so I have this problem. I have my original photos outside the iPhoto library folder. Just because I like to organise photos my way. The thing is that I want to move the iPhoto library folder and the folder where I keep my photos, to an external HD. When I do that and I point iPhoto to the moved librabry, the library itself works, with the albums inside, the thumbnails etc, but when I open a photo it asks me for the location of the original photo. I have thousands of photos and I don't want to tell iPhoto where each photo is manually. Is there a way to tell iPhoto what's the path to the originals folder?
I just did that for iTunes, as I also keep my music outside the iTunes folder, and iTunes found the new location automatically, which I think is pretty amazing.
Is there a way to do that for iPhoto? If you are confused I can try to explain better.

This is the largest single reason why I do not recommend running a Referenced Library.
When you run a Referenced Library iPhoto creates an alias to the file. However, aliases will not survive moving across volumes, and that's how your problem arises.
One possibility that some folks have managed, but others have failed: Download [FileBuddy|http://www.skytag.com> and try use it to resolve those aliases for you. If that fails then I'm afraid you'll be doing them one by one.
Why run a Referenced Library? Are you concerned about accessing your files? There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.

Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

With the desktop version of Lightroom CC, nothing is stored in the cloud, nothing can be accessed directly by Lightroom in the cloud, and the Lightroom CC program is installed locally on your computer. The creative cloud is used as a delivery system to provide you with updates and to validate that you are keeping your creative cloud account current. If you decide to do so, you can create collections of your images and share them in the cloud. And if you have a supported mobile device you can install Lightroom Mobile on that device and work on those images that have been shared in the cloud. But basic operation of Lightroom CC is no different than it has ever been.

Okay, Let's assume that Apple is indeed THAT foolish.......How does one get the photos from the phone to the PC and still use them?

The photos are still on your phone, and if enabled in your Photo Stream. They are not automatically transferred to your computer when syncing.

I am having an iphone 4 and it is not working. i am trying to restore it on itunes directly but it stays at waiting for iphone status with no errors and the iphone goes into a mode where it keeps restarting continuously with apple logo on the screen

the iphone goes from recovery mode to some other mode where it keeps restarting with apple logo flashing on the screen continuously. and there is no error in itunes at all which stays in "waiting for iphone" status

My daughter and I both have iphones. I created an account (not separate itunes) for her on my computer so she could sync her phone/itunes but not have it interfere with mine since we have WAY different taste in music. Creating a different computer profile should work if you have separate itunes accounts, too.
If you all use the same itunes account, you can turn on Home Sharing. That way you can all download the same content without having to pay for it again. Not sure how or if that works with separate itunes accounts.

If you have a dropbox account, there's a free app (probably more) that syncs photos to your dropbox account - picbox.
There's also PhotoSync that syncs photos to/from a number of different services and devices.

The iPhoto library should be in your user folder/Pictures unless it was moved.
