Advice please! Installed Leopard update...now can't connect to certain site

Hi and thanks in advance for any help.
I updated Leopard (10.5.3) and Safari (3.1.1) with the apple patch a couple of days ago. After install, my MBP wouldn't connect to certain sites like Google or Yahoo. This happens for Safari, Firefox, and IE. Today, Google works but not GMAIL. The other sites remain inaccessible; I get the message "can't open page _ because it can't find the server _"
After the install and restart, I didn't change anything.
There are no firewalls in place.
I tried using openDNS and configuring the IP addresses.
Rebooted the MBP and the Router and AirPort Extreme.
Moved the System Config folder to the desktop and starting the browsers.
Also, my Mail can't access my GMail account.
Nothing has worked and I'm near my wits end.
I have a PC desktop that connects fine to everything so I don't think it's my ISP or the router.
I'm hoping for some help here in lieu of subjecting myself to phone **** or driving all the way to the Apple store.

Hi
Welcome to Apple Discussions
Seems like you covered most bases.
Rebooted the MBP and the Router and AirPort Extreme
If you didn't do so, unplug the router and AE. Wait about a minute, then plug-in again. Try Safari or another browser again. If no go I suggest reapplying the 10.5.3 Combo Update. Do not use the computer during the Install. Also, plug in the laptop.
When complete, "repair permissions" using Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.

  • Can't Connect To Certain Sites iPod Touch 2nd Gen

    Hello.
I have an iPod Touch 2nd Generation, and I use an Arris modem to connect to the Internet. I do not have a router.
I've recently moved to a new location. I had to switch to a different ISP and modem. The internet has been working completely fine on all of my devices connected to the modem wirelessly except for my iPod Touch.
The best way I can describe the problem is: I cannot connect to certain sites. Due to Apple's complete abandonment of the older iPod Touch generations, I don't use it for anything but Facebook for when I am home and don't want to be sitting at the computer. That being said, there are only 3 sites I can report not working. Google, YouTube and Facebook all don't work for me. However, I have on rare occasion actually been able to connect to Google even though I haven't changed any settings. I can confirm that Reddit and Yahoo do work. I haven't tried other sites. The message I get when I try to connect to these sites is, "Safari could not open the page because the server stopped responding."
The steps I have taken so far (that I can remember) in hopes of fixing this problem are listed below:
Restored my iPod via iTunes to factory settings.
Restored my iPod to previously backed up data.
Reset network settings in iPod settings.
Disconnected and reconnected to modem wireless signal.
Turned off iPod and held down Home and Power button for 10 seconds or so.
Downloaded Facebook Messenger app to attempt to log in that way (did not work).
    Reset modem.
    Probably some other things too.
I would appreciate any help you fine folks over here could provide as I have no other options to turn to.
    Thanks a lot.

Unfortunately, I have no other available networks to test it on. I can say that it was working before I moved. I can connect to the sites completely fine on all other devices connected to the same network. Unless there is some setting on the modem that specifically stops only my iPod Touch I figured it was something on the iPod causing the problem.

  • T41 re-installed Windows XP, now can't connect to Internet

I recently re-installed windows XP, but now I can not connect to the internet. I downloaded an Ethernet Intel Pro driver, however when following the steps to complete installation, I do not have any options under "Network Controllers" it says this driver is not found.
Can someone please advise what drivers need to be installed in order to connect to the internet again via ethernet and wireless?

  • Update - Now can't connect

I did the iOS 8 update this morning, and now my iPad can't connect to the Internet.  I've reset everything more than once, deleted and re-entered, but nothing works.  My iPad was working perfectly before the update.  Is there a way to roll back the update since the bugs don't seem to be worked out of it?

i'm getting the same error trying to connect to either my imac or a lacie 2big ethernet raid drive. the first time i got this error was after connecting my other ibook to the imac as one of my other users. since then, my main ibook throws this error on every connect attempt.
weird thing is the mount succeeds. the shared files are accessible. the mount can even be "ejected". but each connect throws this "error code -35" popup. additionally, none of my machines has spaces in its system name or in its shared directories. just simple names like store2big, itunes, jeeeem, etc. most baffling.

  • Installed OS update now can't print from Canon MF4500 series

Have just updated to 10.8.5 and triend to install new printer drivers for Canon MF4580dn printer but drivers aren't recognised and I cannot print

Not quite sure what you mean by the drivers aren't recognised but if you mean the MF4500 is not listed in the Add Printer window, then this can happen sometimes and often the simple solution is to restart the Mac.
If this is not what you mean then can you provide more information please.

  • Installed Leopard Update, Now Second Monitor Not Recognized

Is there any way to remove the 1.3 update? I now cannot use my second monitor and when I tried to use time machine, well you can guess what happened. The system froze as soon as I clicked on the icon.
I just switched to a Mac and I am starting to regret the decision.

    Carl, try a couple things....
    1) Startup your computer holding SHIFT down. This may take a while to startup. When it's done, simply restart again. Test your system.
    2) Zap the PRAM by holding down CMD-SHIFT-P-R as your computer starts up. Release those keys when you hear the second startup chime. Then test your system again.
    3) Repair Disk Permissions using DISK UTILITY in your Utilities folder.
    4) Reset the System Memory Unit by simply shutting the computer down, unplugging EVERYTHING from the computer (specially the power cord) and let it set for 5-10 minutes. Then plug everything back in and restart.
It will not hurt to try these steps. It's worth a shot. Good luck!

  • I've just installed Maverick and now can't open iPhoto. I have 9.2.1 currently installed. Am terrified I'm going to lose photos as they weren't all backed up. What do I do? Please help...

I've just installed Maverick and now can't open iphoto. I have 9.2.1 currently installed. Please help - am terrified I've lost my photos as they weren't all backed up.

    Pogs78,
first things first — buy an external drive to use as a Time Machine backup destination and make a back up. That way, you won’t lose anything which is currently on your MacBook Pro.

  • Installed Lion.  Now can't get iPhoto to install/update

Installed Lion.  Now can't get latest update to iPhoto to install.

When all else fails... RESTART and try again.
Luckily, there is always more than one way to download/install software...

  • Just installed Leopard and now I can't send an e-mail

I just finished installing Leopard and now I can't send or forward an e-mail. It wont even let me click on send. I'm not getting any error messages either. Anyone know why I can't send an e-mail?

Since upgrading to Leopard, we have had trouble sending email. Usually couldn't but sometimes it would allow an outgoing message. Hours spent with tier 2 tech support, at Apple, AT&T and Netopia. All Mail settings were verified as correct. I saw a possible solution somewhere else in this discussion forum and tried it. Now Mail is working fine, with consistent email sending. Solution for us was to get the DNS numbers from AT&T and enter them on the Mac under System Preferences/Network/Advanced/DNS. The only DNS number listed there was the one for our Netopia 3347 modem. I clicked the + and added both the Primary and Secondary DNS numbers provided by AT&T. Clicked "OK", "Apply". Then I rebooted--don't know if that was necessary--but now email sends easily and so far no more "server does not support authentication" error messages. It was an easy solution, so it's worth a try.

  • I upgraded to Lion and now Safari doesn't work and the updater hangs so I can't install the updates. Can anyone help me with this?

I upgraded to Lion and now Safari hangs up and the updater hangs up so I can't install the update. Can anyone help?

    Reinstalling Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Installed Leopard and now MacBook can not run on battery

I installed Leopard and now if it is disconnected from the power it will shut down immediately. It worked fine before.. How do I fix?

You might try to reset the SMC (System Management Controller) and/or PRAM (Parameter Random Access Memory). Mac OS X: What's stored in PRAM?

  • HT204408 Purchased FaceTime ver 1.0.4 for iMac running Snow Leopard. Now can't activate.

Purchased FaceTime ver 1.0.4 for iMac running Snow Leopard. Now can't activate.
Get the message "Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again"
On Apple Support page titled: FaceTime, Game Center, Messages: Toubleshooting sign in issues
all items in Resolution list are OK, e.g., have an active Internet connection, have a valid Apple ID and verified, etc.

    Thank you for the reply.
As my father-in-law's MacBook (10.6.8) with FaceTime 1.0.4 is not at hand now, I can not check it for myself right away.
    But my understanding is :
    (1) FaceTime 1.0.5 update is free for download for the OSX 10.6 users who have already purchased and installed FaceTime 1.0.4 or earlier.
    (2) The OSX 10.6 users who want to start using FaceTime from now, need to purchase the 1.0.5 for $0.99 (just as other OSX 10.6 users did before).
The latter (2) is because OSX 10.6 does not include FaceTime which was not ready at the time of its release. Due to some accounting regulation, Apple chose to sell the FaceTime to OSX 10.6 users at the mimimum price rather than to add the function afterward for free.
That means every OSX 10.6 user who wants to use FaceTime has to pay $0.99 at some point of time, but I believe Apple is not so greedy to charge the same software twice to fix its bug.
I guess the screen shot you posted might be taken either by a non-OSX 10.6 Mac, or by OSX 10.6 Mac without FaceTime installed. If you see the same page by a OSX 10.6 Mac with FaceTime alreay installed, it will look diffrently.
Anyway, I may be wrong, but I will check it with my father-in-laws' MacBook hopefully this afternoon.
