Advice re: Moving 1 user acct., keeping another, but wiping

The details:
I have an iMac with 2 user accounts.
I have just purchased a new Mac Mini.
I want to move have my user account on the Mac Mini (this part I can do, mostly, via Migration Assistant).
I want to leave the other user account on the iMac - but, I want to wipe the iMac clean first and do a fresh OS install.
I do have a TimeMachine backup of the iMac.
The questions:
I assume I can reinstall any Mac App Store purchased apps via the Mac App Store -- what about apps that I downloaded elsewhere?Is there a way to also 'import' any license/registration info (and app preferences for that matter) that might be stored in the /Library directory (as opposed to ~/Library)?
The iMac has 10.8.4, but it didn't come with it -- 10.8 was purchased via the Mac App Store... how do I do a fresh/clean install?
Any tips or tricks that might be helpful given that I'd like to make the process as quick and painless as possible, and end up with both machines being setup relatively closely to how the iMac is now for each user?

Migrating using FireWire or ThunderBolt
It appears from the disclosure triangle in the image that you can choose accounts.
Still you should consider making and keeping a clone. There are many ways you can use it and IMO is the best backup to have. Cloning is the best way to transfer apps and supporting files, clean up the stuff you don't want and test the system before installing. So, I'd still stick with cloning and deleting then using migration assitant to rebuild your iMac.
As far as AppStore apps they will only be avaiable if you're using the same Apple ID on both machines. They will be under "Purchases"
To do a fresh install of 10.8.4 boot up holding command-r keys into your Recovery Volume. Then use Disk Utility to erase your drive, then choose "Reinstall OS X". This will be an "Internet Recovery" and will be very slow. But it will install the latest iteration of 10.8.

In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

I've just made another user acct and need to copy my Firefox bookmarks and passwords from my older user acct to my new one. How do I do this? Don't know if you need this info or not but just in case:

Advice on moving OAS 10.1.2.0.0 to 10.1.2.0.2 on another server

I am looking for advice on moving 2 Portal applications including 120 users and 3 external applications from one windows server to another (Windows Server 2003). The existing OAS version is 10.1.2.0.0, and the infrastructure database has been patched up to version 10.1.0.4.0. Both the Infrastructure and Middle Tier reside on the same server.
- What is the best way of moving the Portal applications including the 120 Portal users to the new server? Using Portal export / import and Transport Sets, or is there another preferred method? And what about the Portal users, what is the best method of recreating them on the new installation, keeping their users properties like password and password policies etc.?
- Is it a good idea to install OAS 10.1.2.0.2 on the new server to start using the newer version, or will that create problems when migrating the Portal applications including the Portal users? I belive the old Infrastructure database has to be patched up to version 10.1.0.4.2 before exporting the Page Groups from the old server, so the two Infrastructure databases use the same version. But is there any other issues / problems that I need to be aware of in the migration process?

Moving User's Home Directory from one Xserve to another

Does anyone know the procedure for moving users (Home Directory) from one server to another?
Is there an application that can do this?

I see your problem and I think I will soon have the same one.
I suppose one option would be to delete out the .plist. Then when the user logs in the server should recreate it. If the user had customized it they would of course lose any information.
You could also setup a loginhook that would just run the needed defaults write... and update them as needed. Actually I think that would be the easiest option. The only down side would be making sure every use logs in once before you remove the script.
Hmm I guess another option would be a script that loops through all the users accounts and runs the command as the user. sudo -u usershortname defaults... But I am not sure if this would have to be done on the server it self or if it could be done through a client.

Error after moving user to another organiz.l unit (Edir)

I am moving users to another org. units.
For 2 users, i keeep seeing the following error in /var/log/datasync/connectors/default.pipeline1.mobility-AppInterface.log:

Any idea?

If you are moving users around OUs/Orgs then you will need to remove them from the connector, wait for them to vanish, move user in eDirectory, re-add to connector. As far as I'm aware this is a limitation in all Datasync connectors that link to eDirectory.

How to keep Itunes playing music when switching from one user account to another?

On my old pc, that running XP, itunes would continue playing when I was switching from one user account to another.
Now I have a new PC running win8 and the music stops playing when I switch from one user account to another. I think Itunes is still running on the user that is not active, but the music is not coming out of the speekers.
Does anyone know how I can get the win8 pc to do as the old XP machine?

The steps below detail how to place an input chooser that will allow for the adjustment of your keyboard layout while on the login screen.
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
Click Users & Groups to display the pane (or choose User & Groups from the View menu).
If the lock icon in the lower-left corner of the window is closed, click it, then enter the name and password of an administrator to unlock it.
Click Login Options.
Select the "Show Input menu in login window" checkbox.
From the Apple menu, choose Log Out.
At the login window, click the Input menu (shows the name of the currently selected input source next to a keyboard icon) in the upper-right corner of the screen, then select the desired input source or keyboard layout. If you don't see the input source you are looking for, move the pointer over Other Input Sources, then select the input source from the complete list that appears.

How to fast-switch to another user while keeping iTune playing music

it's really bugging me as my wife is getting addict to iTune. I've to find a way to switch back to my logon to work on my own stuff. Please help.

You could just restart. It should warn you that another user is logged in, but still allow you to override.
While not technically "logging them out" you can kill their windowserver process in Activity Monitor. I don't know, but I would think the Restart option would be more elegant for that user wrt open documents.

Copying files from admin acct to new user acct

hello, i read in the new macworld that i should try to avoid using the admin acct as a daily user. so i'm taking there advice. the problem i have is when i create another user, its settings are reverted back to when you first installed os x. i don't want this. i tried copying my users folder from my admin acct but whn i switch over to my new user acct the settings are still set to default.
at first i put them in the shared folder with my admin acct and when i switched over to the new user that folder didn't give me access. what am i doing wrong?

There is a far easier way to do this without having to move files between user accounts:
1) Go to System Preferences -> Accounts and make a new admin account
2) Go to System Preferences -> Accounts -> your original account, and un-check "Allow user to administer this computer"

I understand this is going off of maintenance, but we are tied to this version
based on the portal we are using.
Would like to verify a procedure I've been using to
move users from one partition to another. Over the past year,
I've moved roughly 5000 accts (out of about 57K) using the "mboxutil -r"
command. Out of the 5000, a handful have had issues with 'disappearing'
INBOX - all have been using the MS Outlook mail client.
I asked our portal software support about this and they said this method
was not supported while the user was still had a imap session going and that
mailbox corruption could occur. They pointed me to #1 on page 642 of the
MS Admin Guide - sure enough, it's there and I don't know why I never really
noticed that first part. I was hoping to use this method to move users from
our old SAN to a new one, with the mboxutil running all during the day/night.
So, with this information, I'll probably just move users during the wee hours,
letting them know ahead of time to not use their account during those hours.
1) Is there anything else I should know about mboxutil rename? To this date,
it's worked well, with the exception of the Outlook email clients.
2) I came accross the MoveUser command, but that seems more for moving
to another server. However, it sounds like this can be done while the user
is logged on. Is this true?

There is an existing RFE (request for enhancement) to have the user automatically disconnected from IMAP when a move (mboxutil -r) is performed (RFE #6499681). Is this true?As you say this utility is more for moving users across systems which is a much different operation as the underlying store database doesn't change as it does during a mboxutil -r operation. The idea is that the move can be performed online (the user see's the 'old' account) and when they reconnect they will be connected to the 'new' account.

Transfer music from one user account to another on the SAME mac?

My family (wife, son, daughter, and me) share an imac but we all have our own user accounts. Our entire itunes music library is in one user account and is getting to the point of being unmanageable.
Can I move some of my itunes library (e.g., my son's music) to another user account on the same iMac? Some songs were imported from CD and others were purchased from my Apple ID number.
It's my understanding that an ipod can only be synced with one itunes library at a time, but I thought Apple also restricted the usage of music bought from itunes to a finite number of computers. If this is true, I think I would be able to transfer a group of songs from one user account to another so long as the user accounts were on the same computer.
I was told that I could just drag the songs into a shared folder and then log into his account and drop them in iTunes.
Some specific questions:
1) Can I move all music files (CD and purchased) to the shared folder for dropping into his account?
2)The purchased ones were purchased under MY apple ID which I do not want to give him access to. Should I create one for him or just have him use mine and wait for my password. I would like to put an allowance on his new ID number and keep it separate from mine. Would that make a difference in the future if I wanted to use one of his songs on my iPod or in an iMovie project?
I just reinstalled my Lepoard OS X and put all my data back. I did not deauthorize anything before I did this. Did I need to? Or is even a clean install on the SAME machine ok and seen as the same authorization?

You can give him copies of song files, either by using a shared folder, or by putting the copies on a USB flash drive from which he can copy them to his own iTunes library.
Any DRM-protected tracks that you have purchased from Apple can only be played if the user has authorization to the account(s) from which the tracks were purchased. Authorization requires physical access to the computer and knowledge of the password, and you can figure it from there!

How to copy all tables, triggers, etc from one user schema to another

Hello everybody!
I am searching for a QUERY or Stored Procedure to copy the tables of one user schema to another schema.
Should look kind of: Copy (Select * from all_objects where owner = 'UserIwantToCopyFrom') to user = 'UserIwantToCopyTO'
I am sure that my example is rubbish but I tried to explain what I want to do.
So is there a chance to do that within sql-code? I have to build a template of a user schema with hundreds of tables, triggers, etc and copy it to several other user schemas.

How to force user to goto another Required Page

Hello,
In my application, I have split my forms into 14 pages, my input forms are split up into add New records only and updates only. On the Adding New records form, how do I force the user onto another required screen? The first page is required, one is required if the user selects yes on the first screen and the other page is always required. I was going to put everything on one page that is required, but that will make the page too busy. After the user clicks next or save, it writes to the database. Is there a better way of doing this?

I am trying to come up with the quickest solution to this problem. It seems like if I go with the mutiple page solution, I will have recode most of my application. If I go with the single page solution, I am just moving fields over from another page and deleting the page. I think I will just go with the single page solution. But this does give me problems, since I am trying to use a Select list with a redirect back to the same page, it will reset all the entered data back to null, I can't use select list with Submit, since I need a Category selected with a deficiency, it will error out. I have tried to use Select with a Branch, but it goes to the next page, instead of staying on the same page. I understand that with a Select with a Branch I can have it save state. Please advise.
