ADVICE REQ: File Server Options for Small Workgroup

Some friends of mine work at my local Newspaper. They have about 8 Macs with 4-5 of them doing Indesign and Photoshop work on files stored on a server. Right now they currently have an 800 MHz G4 with an external Firewire hard drived shared via the free SharePoints software. Performance is acceptable to them but today the firewire drive decided not to mount so they were hooped. I got it back up and running for them but they are wondering if they should be considering a new server.
Can anyone make any recommendations? Basically, they store ALL of their working files on the server volume - Indesign Documents, Digital Photos, ad layouts, everything. They do not use the server for anything else other than common storage. As I said, speed is not really as much of an issue as reliability.
For what they're doing, I'm guessing they don't need an Xserve or Mac Pro and probably don't even need to run OS X Server since they're getting by just find with the client version and the freeware SharePoints software. But, I would appreciate your advice.
Thanks,
Larry Jorgenson

Kevin,
They are running Retrospect backing up the Firewire Drive to another Firewire drive every night. On Monday, they swap the backup drive out with another and take it offsite. In case of a fire, they would lose maximum one week of data. In case of a hardware failure, they would lose less than 24 hours. For them, I think this is a pretty good strategy. I already had to restore their data from a backup about 1 year ago so I know they appreciate the need to have a functional backup system.
Thanks,
Larry

  • Small office file server options

    Hi all,
I'm having a nightmare getting decent answers from the web and businesses about this, so thought I'd try the forum..
    Here is our situation,
We are a small business with 2 mac mini's, 2 macbook laptops and another macbook pro laptop who is remote. (the remote laptop is not a deal breaker)
We are beginning to have a nightmare with file storage, everyone is saving their own work to their own workstation and it's becoming difficult to share files etc.
Basically, our requirements for a solution are:
    - Sensible file server, allowing all on-site computers to use the server as a main file storage
    - Something I can back all computers up with from time machine
    - Useful to restrict certain users to certain files
    - Useful to have external access to files when off site and via the likes of iPad etc.
I've looked in a NAS Raid drive and the OsX Lion Server and also the Time capsule and am just so confused at what to buy.
Although the calendar sharing options etc. on the server would be useful, we can also do this via icloud. It's mainly the file access that is such a problem.
I wonder whether a time capsule would be good enough as a file server - which we then back up to the cloud to secure the data.
I really need a definitive answers here as buying a server is a significant investment.
    Please help!
    Thanks

Time Capsule could be enough for your small business at the moment. But don't you want to look into the future a bit as well? Time Capsule is for sale with 2 and 3TB hard disks which will be really enough right now but upgrading the disk won't be easy (or won't work at all) .
A Mac Mini Server + Thunderbold external hard disk is much more expensive but you're more secure in the future. Diskspace is easily upgraded if nessersary and you're also having the power of OSX Lion Server on your Mac Mini Server.
I want to leave it here and will be awaiting your reply. How much do you want to spend?

  • Peoplesoft Change assistant File server options

    Hi All,
I am pretty new to change assistant, I am configuring Change assistant and it seems my configuration are in correct. CA is able to find app/web,database not able to find my File server.
I am using Peopletools version -8.52.12, Detailed steps given below,
    Tools, Options, Environment Management
Clikc -(View) Opens -Environment Management hub summary for the environments.
    Its shows
    Database Name- DBXYAB
    File Server- No
    Database Server- Yes
    Application Server- Yes
    Web server- Yes
Is there a way to find, what the issue will be and trouble shooting tips, if any.

Given your stated configuration, it should identify the machine running CA as the file server. Worst case, you just have to manually copy files into the file server from the zip file. This is only necessary for your own development purposes. The app and process scheduler servers will use the versions deployed to ps_app_home/ps_home.

  • File Server Migration - For ORG A Forest to ORG B Forest ( Need to create and Map Security Group automatically on new Migrated Folders - Please Help

I have two forest With Trust works Fine .
    I have file server in ORG – A ( Forest ) with 2003 R2 Standard
    I have a File server in ORG  - B ( Forest ) With Windows server 2012 ( New Server for Migration )
I have 1000 + folders with each different permission sets on ORG-A. We are using Security groups for providing permission on the share Folders on ORG A
I need to Migrate  all the folders from ORG – A to ORG – B.
I am looking for an automated method of creating Security Groups on AD during the Migration, Once the Migration is Done, I can add the required users to the security groups manually.
    Example.
Folder 1 on ORG – A has Security Group Called SEC-FOLDER1-ORGA
I need an automated method of Copying the files to ORG – B and Creating a new security Groups on ORG –B Forest with the same permission on parent and child Folders. I shall Add the users manually to the Group.
    Output Looks Like
Folder 1 on ORG – B has Permission called SEC-FOLDER1-ORGB ( New Security Group )
Also I need a summarized report of security Group Mapping, Example – Which security Group on ORGA is mapped with Security Group Of ORGB

    Hi,
I think you can try ADMT to migrate your user group to target domain/forest first. Once user groups are migrated, you can use Robocopy to copy files with permission - that permission will continue be recognized in new domain as you migrated already.

  • Configure DHCP Server options for Internet Sharing?

    Good morning, all.
I have a Sprint (Sierra 595U) AirCard internet connection, which I'm sharing over my AirPort (using OS X's built-in Internet Sharing) to several Windows clients in my office. I see that when Sharing is enabled, en1 takes on the address 10.0.2.1 by default, as well as the role of default gateway/router and DHCP server for the Windows clients.
My question is: Can I configure the IP addresses and DHCP options for Internet Sharing to another address/mask scheme?
Just like I changed my home wireless network away from the default 192.168.1.0/24 for security reasons, I'd like to do the same here.
    Thanks and Regards,

  • Web Server Options for APEX Installation on Oracle Database 10g

Hi. We are installation a APEX on a test server that is running Oracle Database 10g 10.2.0.4.0. As I understand it there are two Web Server Options:
    1) Oracle HTTP Server (Apache)
    2) Oracle Application Express Listener
Do both of these work for Oracle Database 10g 10.2.0.4.0? I thought I remember reading somewhere that only the Oracle Application Express Listener would only work with database version 11 or higher.

Do both of these work for Oracle Database 10g 10.2.0.4.0?Yes.
I thought I remember reading somewhere that only the Oracle Application Express Listener would only work with database version 11 or higher. No, that restriction (with the exception of 10g XE) applies to the third web server option which you haven't mentioned: Embedded PL/SQL Gateway (EPG), as discussed in your previous thread: +{thread:id=2201975}+

  • Add a file size option for TIF export

I would like to have an option to set (uncompressed) file size (or alternatively size in MPix) for a TIF file and have lightroom set the pixel dimensions accordingly. The reason is that many libraries specify a file size requirement. If all your images are cropped the same then working out the dimensions is simple, but if they are all different shapes then it becomes a real pain as you have to work out the dimensions for each one.
Something somewhat similar has been mentioned for jpeg output, to allow you to specify file size and have lightroom adjust quality to achieve the filesize you want (leaving pixel dimensions fixed).
    ...rob

If by filesize you mean dimensions (e.g. cropped), then that is built into Lr5 - via smart collection, not library filter.
If you mean actual source file size (e.g. in bytes), that requires either:
    * John Ellis' AnyFilter, or
    * Jeffrey Friedl's Data Explorer.
(if there are others, I don't know about them)
I have plugins for lotsa things, but not everything .
    Cheers,

  • Movie file save options for Windows

  • Adobe options for small school ICT lab

I am looking to set up a ICT lab at my school with 5 iMacs for multiple users.  What is the best way to put the Adobe Suite onto those?  Do I need a site license or do I buy 5 separate licenses?

You would need Device licensing if you have a specific number of computers with multiple users.
An individual license is tied to an unique Adobe ID so can only be used by that individual.
    Hope that helps.

  • Wich kernel suits for small file server / gateway+Python?

In short: are kernel-beyond or emission special features (latence, stability, ...) worth for a LAN file server? for a gateway + Python (Zope/Plone) PC? and for a gateway that do router/firewall/proxy behind a Linksys router/FW?
    Details:
We've got a PIV 1,7GHz with 512 to 1024 Mb sdram as a file server for <10 PCs (rsync, (duplicity), Samba, tar, gunzip, vsftpd).
Compiled kernel26-emission wain's PKGBUILD without X ; it takes just 7 Mb RAM after boot with sshd & vsftpd started
2nd PC is a Pentium II 350MHz with 192 Mb sdram on 2 smal SCSI HDDs
It serves as a router/firewall/DHCP & DNS server with ADSL connection, & hosts a Python (Zope/Plone) server that likes RAM & CPU.
Now runs Arch Linux with a custom kernel-2.6.15-archck kernel.

Let me correct myself, the key that is needed is called "aliasIP> One message on the net seems to imply that one could use something like :
    <key>aliasIP</key>
    <string>wan.ip.number.178</string>
for a dynamic IP address. Can anyone confirm this?

  • Setting up permissions on a central file server...

I am setting up a central file server in a small network enviornment where the users will share a drive and jobs on the drive. Problem I am having is if I set up seperate users and one group that they all belong to, when someone creates a job in there home directory and then copies it to the server, the rest of the users access it as read only. I need them to be able to read and write to each others folders. Any solution other than creating one user that they all share (since that kind of defeates the perpose).
    Thanks in advance,
    Larry

The solution to your problem depends on whether you want to use ACLs or not.
If you are managing a server, you should crack open the manuals- the answer to your question lies within those pages. To point you in the right direction.....
If ACLs are NOT enabled for the volume. When you click the Share Point in WorkGroup Manager, then click the Protocols tab, you will see a check box for "Inherit Permissions from Parent". This is what you want.
If this option is greyed, then you DO have ACLs enabled for the volume.
The explanations for this are not short and managing a server requires reading, research and frustration.
ACLs work more reliably than the Posix 'inherit' permissions option does.
    That said....
A user of this forum put together an excellent guide to ACLs. Here's the link:

  • Extreme as File Server vs. Mac Mini G4

    Hello all,
I have an iMac 24" 2008 and a Macbook White 2010 which I use for work both at home and away. I have all my work files and databases on an external hard disk plugged into the Airport Extreme as a file server. I can also access this when away from home using Macbook and MobileMe. I also have an Airport Express to extend the network at home. Currently reaching 8.4MB speeds on a 10mb connection over wireless.
Recently the iMac has been taking it's time to connect to the HD to such an extent that I get frustrated and pull the HD from the Airport and plug it direct into the iMac just so I can work. The Macbook doesn't seem to have a problem connecting to it.
I also have an old Mac Mini G4 which I tried to use as a file server before but found it slow also.
Given the choice, what would you opt for? Mac Mini again as server or Airport Extreme with HD? The HD I use is a portable Maxtor 160Gb but I also have a Lacie Starck 1tb that I currently have plugged into the iMac as a Time Machine.
I just want a simple file server option with fast access!!!
    Lewis

RAID is not backup.  Software RAID and hardware RAID are the same thing operation wise.  The only difference is that you need your Mac Mini to do the managing and controlling of the RAID array as opposed to the dedicated RAID controller with the hardware option.  With 2 drives on your server, you usually have 2 RAID choices -- Stripe (Raid 0) or Mirror (Raid 1).  If you set up your Mini with software RAID 1, then what this does is whenever your first drive is being written with data, the second drive is mirrored with the same data.  In the event of a boot drive failure, you can still boot from your second drive.  You can achieve the same thing somewhat with Carbon Copy Cloner, but it is not as seamless as RAID 1.  Raid 0 stripe mode essentially doubles your hard drive throughput, but because the Sandy Bridge Intel Core i series chip is a powerful and efficient CPU, there won't be a huge latency lag associated with previous software RAID setup.
Dual Core vs Quad Core is really dependent on software used.  If you use Handbrake a lot which takes advantage of the multi-core of the Quad Core, then Quad will be faster than Dual Core.  However, some Mac software are not multi-core aware.  In this case, a fast Dual Core with Turbo Boost engaged will be FASTER than a Quad of a slower clock speed in single process type application, but the newer Core i5 can run up to 4 threads, simulating somewhat 4 virtual cores, so really it is application and usage dependent.
I recently purchased a Mac Mini Core i5 2.3Ghz to deal with more HD video work and upgraded it to take a second SSD drive.  It is way cheaper than the Apple BTO option, plus I get to choose which fast SSD drive I want in.  With a SSD drive installed, the Mini just flies.  The Mini did not dissappoint me with iMovie 11 and editing plus finalizing.  For the cost to performance and power usage aspect, the Mini with Core i5/i7 option is a viable path.
