Advice required fo new SSD/HDD setup and OS/App re-install
Hi,
Over the last few weeks my HDD has been failing verification (4 times in the last fortnight ). I have used both Disk Utility and DiskWarrior to repair the drive and each time the outcome has been successful, only to have Verify Disk report errors a few days later.
I therefore decided to get a new drive. I've gone for a Crucial M-4 256GB SSD. However, as I do a lot of database work (MySQL mainly), I don't want to hammer the SSD with lots of writes. So I have also bought a WD 500GB hard disk (5,400rpm) together with a caddy for installing it into the DVD space. The caddy comes with an external enclosure so that i can slot my DVD drive into there instead and continue to use it via USB.
System details: MacBook Pro 6,2 mid-2010, i5 2.53 Ghz, 4GB DDR3, both internal and additional gfx card, matt hi-res screen, OS X 10.6.8, Time Machine on Iomega external firewire drive
In my mind, I will be allocating the following to each drive:
SSD - primary drive:
OS X 10.6.8
All my Apps and Utilities, documents etc
HDD - secondary drive:
MySQL data files
OS X swap file
Windows 7 partition
Questions:
1. Does this sound like a valid setup - ie is it doable?
2. Will the SDD automatically be picked up as the primary drive when OS X boots?
3. How best to install OS X? Should I do a system restore from Time Machine or take this opportunity to reinstall from scratch? Time spent on this is not a major issue as I have a backup latop to work on in the meantime
3. Can I actually install Win7 on a secondary drive with Bootcamp or would it need to be on the primary SSD?
4. If I can install Win7 onto the HDD, will that Win7 partition be bootable from Parallels 7? I've heard some people have difficulty with this using VMWare
5. Is it worth having the swap file on the secondary drive or should I leave it on the SSD?
6. If I upgrade to Lion/Mountain Lion, will the full disk encryption work with an SSD?
7. I know that I need to go into the DVD app to edit the path to the DVD drive form 'internal' to 'external'. However, does anytone know if games that require the drive to be inserted also work with external drives? Not a big deal if not as I only have 1 of these left.
Any additional advice most welcome
Thank you.

Use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the present boot drive to a blank external drive, you can hold the option key and boot off this drive.
Option key or c key boot off the 10.6 install disk and use Disk Utility to Repair the internal drive, preferablly to Erase with Security Option Zero all Data, this will assist in mapping off bad sectors on the drive likely responsibel for your problems.
Reinstall 10.6 fresh and use the same log in name as before, Software update fully and install programs from original sources and lastly files from the clone.
Your drive should be fine after this, if it's still having problems then it's very likely a mechanical issue and needs to be replaced.
The caddy comes with an external enclosure so that i can slot my DVD drive into there instead and continue to use it via USB.
You can't boot or install OS X/Windows from a external optical drive is what I understand, so you will have to plan around that issue with bootable clones, Winclone etc.
Clones can be booted from and reversed cloned onto new internal drives, in a lot shorter time and safer than TimeMachine restores.
note: intalling a drive in the optical slot is a violation and disqualification of warranty/AppleCare
Time Machine on Iomega external firewire drive
TimeMachineo only restores, it's not a bootable clone drive.
Most commonly used backup methods
In my mind, I will be allocating the following to each drive:
SSD - primary drive:
OS X 10.6.8
All my Apps and Utilities, documents etc
HDD - secondary drive:
MySQL data files
OS X swap file
Windows 7 partition
Questions:
1. Does this sound like a valid setup - ie is it doable?
No, Windows BootCamp will have to go on the same boot drive as OS X.
The swap file of OS X should be on the SSD for speed, yes it will wear it out, but it employs wear leveling and likely by the time the SSD wears out your going to be buying a new machine anyway.
So on the SSD, OS X, Windows, Programs, basic user folders. This way if the hard drive has issues your up on the SSD.
On the hard drive place new folders with data there, like a storage drive.
2. Will the SDD automatically be picked up as the primary drive when OS X boots?
You set either Windows or OS X as the Startup Disk in System Preferences, and it is the only boot drive.
With OS X/Windows which you select which partition to boot from using the option key at boot.
You could also go with virtual machine software if your hardware demands with Windows isn't great or you can do both.
Windows in BootCamp or Virtual Machine?
3. How best to install OS X? Should I do a system restore from Time Machine or take this opportunity to reinstall from scratch? Time spent on this is not a major issue as I have a backup latop to work on in the meantime
Scratch and only return files manually, no restores or migrations. This way your free of corrupted data.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
3. Can I actually install Win7 on a secondary drive with Bootcamp or would it need to be on the primary SSD?
SSD primary.
4. If I can install Win7 onto the HDD, will that Win7 partition be bootable from Parallels 7? I've heard some people have difficulty with this using VMWare
VM software of Parrallels and VMFusion can copy the BootCamp Windows and uses it as a file in OS X, which one can save snapshots of that virtual machine file, especially useful for malware and only updating pristine copies of Windows so your not pwned.
5. Is it worth having the swap file on the secondary drive or should I leave it on the SSD?
SSD for speed, it's extra space for memory and the faster it is the better for your computer,
If your in the box, might as well max the RAM, that's even faster.
6. If I upgrade to Lion/Mountain Lion, will the full disk encryption work with an SSD?
Yes, but Filevault has serious drawbacks, first it does slow down your CPU as it has to encrypt and decrypt everything on the fly.
If you have trouble with your machine, you can't easily access the Filevaulted drive to recover files.
If you have some sensitive data, you should be using a Iron Key self encrypting USB or a similar external drive (has it own keypad or key), because johhny law, customs and Apple will need the password to search or fix your machine.
With the sensitive data on a external source, then you can use it with any machine.
If you want to keep your speed up, not have to buy all new versions of software and some third party hardware as there are no drivers, I suggest you stick with 10.6 on that machine, it will be around for quite some time.
http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
10.8 on new hardware is coming, decide then or when 10.9 rolls out, don't torture yourself with 10.7 on older hardware in my opinion.
does anytone know if games that require the drive to be inserted also work with external drives? Not a big deal if not as I only have 1 of these left.
Most games I know install and have their own copy protection not requiring a disk being inserted as it wears out that way also won't work with machines that don't have optical drives.
However I suspect if it has that sort of content protection that it won't work on external optical drives.
Likely a game that old won't work on 10.7 nor 10.8 anymore anyway, so you will have to give it up.
Be warned that 10.7 can cost you more money in upgraded software, PPC based programs of old will no longer work. Also drivers for older third party hardware, so beware before you upgrade.
CS5 doesn't work too well on 10.7 neither, so you'll have to go to CS6 for instance.

I have a new mac book air and somehow iPhoto was installed twice. Also, a second library was created and it became the default library. I attempted to switch to the original library but it won't open. what can I do to revert to the old library?
Both iPhotos open to a default library (#2) which has 300+ photos, I attempted to "switch to library" under the file tab in iPhoto and tried to choose "other library" which had most of my photos. When I attempt to open it, it doesn't do anything. I can see it and there are 2 libraries but it won't open.
Have you tried to open your old iPhoto library by double-clicking it directly, instead of using the File menu? That should work, if you are running iPhoto '11 and the library has been created by that version or an older version. DO you get an error message, if you select the library directly in the Finder?
I checked and it is the latest version of iPhoto.
Is it iPhoto '11, version 6.0.5? "Latest version" is ambiguous, because it will depend on your system version.
Where is your iPhoto Library stored? -

Triple Boot w/ SSD/HDD Setup
Hi guys,
I previously had a dual boot setup w/ windows 7. Recently, I upgraded my HD to a 500 gb WD caviar blue and moved it into an optibay along with putting in an intel 320 series SSD. I was wondering if it would be possible to triple boot with having my Mac OS install on the SSD and Ubuntu/Windows 7 on the HDD(therefore having 3 partitions on the HDD, one for my mac data(music, movies, etc.), one for windows, one for ubuntu) My SSD is 80 Gb and therefore would not be sufficient for accomadating all of the OSes so I would need to put it on the HDD. Another complication would be the fact that I am only able to use the external superdrive, but I have already made USB sticks of both OSes. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!Well, I haven't tried this, but... the documentation says if you have more than one internal disk you have to disable one of them. I also don't know if Boot Camp Assistant will work on a disk that doesn't have Mac OS X on it at all, or if it just has an MBR. I know it gets ****** with three or more (visible) partitions, and will not even let you download/create the support driver USB stick, which is b.s.
However, if you can figure out a combination that Boot Camp Assistant will be agreeable, BCA 4 has the ability to somehow make it possible to run a Windows install image from a USB stick on certain Apple hardware. This is mentioned on page 4, in the middle paragraph, of the 10.7 Boot Camp Install Setup document PDF. But even if your hardware could support this, BCA may not let you do it for other reasons which of course it won't tell you why. It just won't let you. (Per usual Apple's error messages are not at all useful.)
Otherwise, I think you're going to have to remove the SSD, put the HDD back where it was, put the superdrive back inside the computer - do your installations - and then redo the surgery to get back to SSD + HDD.
Windows and Ubuntu install drivers based on the computer used for installation. With Ubuntu you might be able to get around this by rebuilding the initrd/initramfs after you get the drive back into your laptop, but I don't know if you can successfully get Windows to cooperate by moving the drive from one computer to another.
Basically you have a very custom situation and Apple doesn't tend to support custom anything. They provide tools for an extremely narrow type of support and if you deviate from that standard - well, you're on your own. So you have to blaze your own path.

New to time capsule and need help with installing it?
I just bought a new 3tb time capsule and also new to apple routers I want to use this as my new wireless router how do I go about switching this out with my router now. Im using a linskys router now nothing special I think its only a 300Mbps the only problem is that we just had our new house complete and prewired with ethernet connection in every room and a security system that runs off of the router how do I go about switching that set up to the new time capsule? I know if I had to have the company come out to do it they charge a hefty fee which I know its that hard to do the only thing that's stopping me is that set up to the security system I don't want to screw that up???
Three different aspects
1. Set the form up to submit the data (XML or FDF), not the full PDF. You can import the data to the PDF on your end.
2. You can turn on Extended Reader Rights, but then limit the use/users to 500 by the EULA. The applicability of this option depends on your intended application. In a small office, it would be fine. For general web use you would likely exceed the limit and be in violation of the EULA.
3. There may be an e-mail problem, one reason that e-mail is not recommended for form submission (even if the manual discusses it). Again, in a controlled environment like an office it will probably work fine, but in a web setup it is best to use a web script. There are 2 problems with e-mail that both depend on the client system (YOU have no control, but will be blamed in any case). First, the client machine has to be set up as an active MAPI client. Many folks do not have this on. Second, some e-mail clients treat PDFs like text and the result is a corrupt e-mail submission, even if it makes to you.
If you have the possibility of web submission, do it. I suggest only having the form data submitted and not the form. -
Here is a strange problem I have with my Notes App which I am now using regularly in 10.8.2 since it syncs to all my Macs/iPad/iPhone:
I open the Notes App. I then wait for it to finish "Updating". I then add a New Note clicking the plus botton. As I type, after a couple of seconds it creates a new Note, so I have 2 notes. Then again as I keep typing - more notes. The "Top" Note has everything I typed and the ones below have 1 line less per Note! i.e. it saves a new note then moves on when I carry on typing!
This is a very strange problem and it is new to me - I have been using this App for the past few weeks with no problem. Thanks for this, it really helped. I had just upgraded to 10.8 on this and the Notes app was installed - so it synced to my other Notes accounts.
The strange thing was that the default was to my Hotmail account even though I also have iCloud and Gmail accounts set up, too.
I have followed your suggestion and now only have iCloud Notes - and this works perfectly.
Thanks! -
Can't open finder, appstore and other apps after installing updates
Hi,
I am using Mac book pro which I bought 3-4 years back. I have 8GB RAM. Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel core i5. Few days back I installed the updates and since then I am not able to open many applications like: Finder, App store and others. Some apps like Google Chrome, Microsoft word, Preview, etc are working fine. After the update I have OS X version 10.9.5 . I am not sure which version I had before update but it was Maverics and all apps were working perfectly.
When I try to open App store, it shows this error:
App Store cannot be opened because of a problem.
Check with the developer to make sure App Store works with this version of OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and OS X.
Click Report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple.
When Finder crashes, it shows this error in Error report:

Is is possible to get AppStore to scan Mac and import apps currently installed?
Hi,
I have a lot of Apps already installed on my Mac and l noticed that some are already in the App Store.
Is is possible to automatically scan my Mac and find any apps that area already in the App Store and then download them? So l don't have to go through all the apps l have and find them in the App Store manually then download them.
JustinThat wouldn't be an issue paying for apps just as long as you got a list of all the apps on your system with the option to download the free ones and to pay and download the others.
The App store only works with Snow Leopard so you could make it so this scanning app also only worked on Snow Leopard to solve that issue.
Hmm, any developers out there want to create a script to do this -
Question regarding SSD/HDD setup in late 2011 MBP
Sorry to start a new thread about this topic but I couldn't find the information I needed.
I'm about to install a 256gb SSD in place of the standard 500gb HDD in my late 2011 MBP, replacing the optical drive with the existing HDD. I don't really want to do a clean install, so I'm planning on using carbon copy cloner.
My question is how do I clone only the necessary files (my 400gb of data won't all fit on the SSD)?
I'm planning on putting all apps, system files, both libraries and the shared folder on the SSD, with music, docs, movies, photos and downloads remaining on the HDD.
Is it as simple as:
-select all necessary folders in CCC and clone to SSD
-boot from SSD
-delete cloned files from HDD
-redirect itunes etc to new paths
Thanks in advance.I have a MacBook Pro 2.4ghz (MacBookPro8,2) (Late 2011) .. would you be able to tell me based on these screenshots if I would be okay putting a 6G SSD in my optical drive bay? Thank you!!

SSD HDD setup in Early 2011 - SSD Read Only?
So I recently upgraded my Early 2011 MBP with a 240 gb Sandisk Extreme SSD and a Seagate Maximus XT 750gb 7200 RPM drive. I installed Mountain Lion as a clean install on the SSD and moved my Users folder to the HDD by doing the advanced options thing I had been hearing about in a few other threads.
Now all of a sudden my SSD is Read Only and it won't let me change the permissions (nor repair the permissions in Disk Utility) which is odd because I am te admin (and only user on the comp)
When I changed the users folder I added a second Admin account (admin 1 is just MY NAME and Admin 2 was named MY NAME - TEST) so I wonder if that has anything to do with it,
I would really like to not have to format all over again so any help with this would be great. ThanksThank you-
I think SATA II speeds might be adequate for my needs- much faster than the stock HDD, and the OS, Program and file handling capabilities of the Fusion Drive setup might be worth it. I guess I'll just have to try it, see if it works at all...
Of course, the speed gain is important, but perhaps only if long term reliability is maintained-
Thanks again-

SSD & HDD setup - knowing how to split OS & Apps + Docs over two drives
Hi
I have a new 128GB SDD drive I want to use in my Mac as well as a SATAII 1TB hard drive I have already. I already run Snow Leopard and Lion due to hardware not supported by Lion I still need to use. As Mountain Lion is coming out soon, I have read about keeping the OS and Apps on an SDD drive and Data on a separate larger standard HDD (as much cheaper than an SSD is).
I use Lion for probably 90% of the time and Snow Leopard for the other 10%.
What would be the best way to do this. I am happy to start off again with a clean install, only transferring the files I need from an external hard drive to my internal HD together with backed up emails etc. I can't see why I would use Lion by the end of July when Mountain Lion is out, unless any of my other hardware is not supported by it.
If anyone has already done this or know of any websites with this info on, please let me know. I have already checked a few websites, but not found the info I need.
Thanks in advance.
MattThanks Bill. We see so many systems with a raid0 boot drive nowadays, I didn't even consider it to be an issue. Noel Carboni on the Photoshop forum is proud of his multi drive SSD raid0 that he uses for _everything_, although Noel is only a Photoshop guy, and software engineer. I also have an MSI laptop that came as standard with two SSDs in a raid0 for the boot drive (MSI GT70).
Regards recovery tools, I have Shadow Protect, but have not used its boot drive image feature up to now. I don't know if that would cover me for a lost boot drive?
BTW I have worked out how and when to install the drivers. I am also committed to the two drives now, so just have to decide how to use them. -
Required help on ASA basic setup and configuration
Hi,
I am very very new to Security/Firewall domain, As I have gone through lot of documents and understood there must be one outside interface and atleast one or multiple inside interfaces depends on the requirement. I have attached a high level design, it shows how ASAs tobe connected to Aggre/Dist. Switches and how DMZ are conneccted to ASA via L2 Switches. Could any one help me on this how to configure and what are basic configuration required to eastablish the network and it works. I need two inside networks one is for dmz servers and another one is other servers to be advertise to outside DC.When you say NK501 that it is a typo and that it should be N5K01 (for nexus 5000 switch 1?)
So if these are nexus switches, and I assume you are looking for active/standby configuration on the ASA for HA. Your configuration would be something like the following if you want full redundancy.

New Comp. Setup and Partitioning
Hello, when you get a new mac, is everything already installed? I want to install a partion dividing the drive into two volumes [mac os x, and documents], as well as not install some drivers, languages, and programs.
So if everything is pre-installed, I would have to select the 'erase and install' option?
thxHi rgd22;
You never told us exactly what model Mac you are getting so I will cover all bases. Rather then partitioning I would say if your Mac has slots for internal disks then use an internal instead of a partition. If not, then use and external disk for your documents instead of a partition.

Can't install newer versions of iTunes and can't un-install current version
HELP!
That's a good start to my first post I think lol... hey at least I'm still laughing, even though I feel like crying!
I am having (probably similar to many from what I can see from this forum and also from google search) problems updating my iTunes to the latets version.
Whenever I start to install the new version I get a message pop up saying that iTunes64.msi can't be located, even though it does exist in the default filepath it throws up anyway.
After doing some Google searches I saw that a way around this might be to use the Windows Unintaller Utility, however, I have yet to actually find this utility, particularly as Microsoft now appear to have removed all traces of it from their site as it seemd to be causing other issues.
Next I found an article on Apple that said that if I am having the problems that I have stated above then I should unistall various apple software items in a particular order with iTunes being the first on the list.
This is where I am now stuck! I can't un-install iTunes from Control Panel as it says that it isn't installed! Of course it is installed, however, it would appear that something somewhere is corrupt and it doesn't actually think it is really installed (I think my PC is suffering a sual personality... maybe that's what dual core really means lol).
The corrupt nature of my iTunes installation would also seem to be borne out by the fact that the icon in the list of installed programs for iTunes is not the normal icon but a blank (unrecognised) icon.
I am now clean out of ideas as I can't do any of the "normal" things to remove and re-install iTunes and so I could really use some help/advice.Hi Katrina
Thanks for confirming my suspicions on the use of (or rather not) of the utility on Windows 7.
I also tried as you suggested to run the iTune64.msi file from it's location... it almost looked like it was working but then came up with the usual message saying it couldn't find the .msi file.
I even tried copying the file to another location but it still hit the usual error
I have a horrible suspicion that I am not going to get this sorted short of doing a complete re-install of my OS (which I don't fancy doing, particularly as at least iTunes is functioning anyway).
I am already planning to move away from Windows PCs and move onto a Mac in the very near future, so hopefully in the intervening time Apple won't release a critical udate to iTunes that means I need to update to continue certain functionality.
Roll on Mac-Day for methinks
Of course if anyone else can think of any solutions for me to try in the meantime then I would be more than grateful to hear from them and to give it a whirl.
