Advice transferring data from MBP to MBP via Thunderbolt

does anyone have advice for the best way to transfer "specific" user data from one Mac to another?  i just want to copy all the stuff needed to sync my iPhone (i.e. iTunes library & iPhoto library), without bringing the old Account over to the destination machine.
i'm sure i'm making it more difficult that it needs to be, but i've been browsing the web for a solution and all the advice seems to be for people setting up a brand new machine, out of the box, BEFORE establishing a new account (and all the system data that comes with it).  i've already set up an account & i only want the mission critical data.
for example, have you ever used Apple's Migration Assistant to transfer data from one Mac to another, AFTER establishing a new account on the destination machine?  if my memory serves, the last time i did it, i ended up with two different Login Accounts. one of which i never used again (i know i can delete it afterwards, but that approach feels inelegant).
i know i can use Target Disk Mode to "drag & drop" the files needed, but that makes me worry that i'll run in to problems (possibly with user permissions, or even apps that i've already installed outside of the realm of iOS syncing).  for example i put 1Password & Dropbox on the destination machine, so if i use Migration Assistant to copy the entire Applications folder, am I going to have 1Password & Dropbox data stored in 2 locations?).  i imagine dropbox is "system wide" whereas 1Password is an account-specific app.
thanks in advance if you offer feedback

For iTunes, your best bet may be Home Sharing, per  iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer.
For iPhoto, you should be able to use Target Disk mode and just copy the iPhoto library.  The user account on the new Mac may have read rights to the iPhoto library on the old Mac, allowing you to copy it directly.
If it doesn't, you should be able to log on to the old Mac and copy the iPhoto library to the special Shared user account in the Users folder at the top level of the drive.  Then start the old Mac in Target Disk mode, log on to the new one, and copy from the Users/Shared folder.

Yes, it's by far the best, easiest, fastest, and most reliable way to set up a new Mac just like the old one, with all the same user accounts, data, settings and preferences.  It's called Setup Assistant (see Using Setup Assistant on Mountain Lion or Lion for the gory details).

Yes, exactly.  Migration Assistant is very similar to Setup Assistant, but must be run from an Admin user account, and can't add to an existing account.  If you want to transfer an entire account, you can still do so, and if you need more than your iTunes and iPhoto data, that's probably your best bet.
If you don't already have things like Mail, Contacts, and Calendar set up, you'll find it rather tedious to set them up again manually, or to copy the data.

Probably not;  it depends on where you installed those apps.  Both Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant copy apps from the top-level Applications folder from the old Mac to the top-level Applications folder on the new Mac, plus some supporting files.  It only transfers apps that don't already exist, so it doesn't replace newer versions with older ones.
If you don't use one of those to transfer your Applications, and just drag and drop them, some won't work properly.  That's because "complex" apps (typically, the ones that come with their own installers) also install additional "helper" apps and/or various support files in other locations, usually inside the top-level Library folder.  If you don't know find and copy those, too, the apps may not work properly or at all.  The Assistants do copy those apps and files nearly all the time (there are a few apps that place things in places they shouldn't).
Bottom line:   Migration Assistant is probably your best, easiest, most reliable option.

  • Transferring Data from old iMac to new iMac via Firewire

I am having difficulty transferring data from my old iMac to my new iMac via firewire. Per the instructions contained in migration assistant, when I hold down the letter "T" key during startup of the "old" mac the firewire symbol does not appear. Given that the firewire symbol does not appear I am unable to proceed with the transfer. Of note, my new Mac is the '09 24" iMac and my old iMac is the early 2006 model with the 17" screen. Incidentally, I am using the following cable contained in the attached link along with the adaptor (400) with respect to my old iMac.

    Can anyone help?

    Hi Todd
Not sure why that wouldn't work, but it could be that cable and adapter setup as the Early Core Duo only supports firewire 400.
You should try a 9 to 6 Pin Bilingual FireWire Cable:

  • When transferring HR data from ECC to CRM via change pointers

When transferring HR data from ECC to CRM via change pointers ,certain data is getting earsed in CRM
paricularly the last name and first name of BUT000
Do you have any idea why this could be happening
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Kittu,
Change pointers. Change pointers are R/3 objects that mark changes to SAP master data. Change pointers are managed by mechanisms in a Shared Master Data (SMD) tool and are based on Change Document (CD) objects. CD objects record the changes occurring to master data at a field level. These changes are stored in tables CDHDR (header table) and CDPOS (detail table). ALE configuration provides a link between CD objects and change pointers. Internal mechanisms update tables BDCP and BDCPS, which host the change pointers. While CD objects are application-data-specific, the processing status of change pointers is message-type-specific. Also, the ALE change pointers are activated first at a general level and then at the message-type level.
    use this links kittu.

  • I recently purchased a MacBook Pro and transferred data from my MacBook via Ethernet cable. I did not consolidate my accounts and kept using my MacBook. Can I update the data transfer now using Ethernet and can I consolidate my accounts?

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro and transferred data from my MacBook using Migration Assistant via Ethernet cable.  I was confused about consolidating my accounts, so I continued to use my old MacBook.  Can I now update the data transfer using the same process and begin using my new MacBook Pro exclusively?  How do I consolidate my existing accounts?
    Thank you.

Of course. It does everything it did before Yosemite. You just won't be able to send or receive SMS messages with it.

  • Transferring data from my time machine after system software update, but my computer seems to be stuck on "create your account"

Have just been uploading snow leopard as the pre step to getting lion and have been transferring data from my time machine, but my computer seems to be stuck on "create your account"

    I found a solution!
Perhaps this is just temporary, but I have my display up and working again.
Although the symptoms are different were a bit different, the solution here worked:
    http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/120259/grey-screen-after-login-blue-scr een-of-death-from-cmdr
As I was able to connect to my HD via an external monitor, in the finder, I went to:
    1. Macintosh HD --> System --> Library --> Extensions
    2. From there I moved all of the files that started with ADM and ATI (19 in total for me) to a folder on my desktop. (You will need to enter your admin password for this)
    3. Next was a restart.
    4. Then my display started working again.
    5. After that, I transferred the files back into my Extensions folder.
    6. I then did another restart with my fingers crossed and breath held. It worked.
Also... During the last few days of trying to find a fix, I restored a Mavericks backup to my computer away from Yosemite.
I'm very sure this problem occurred when I put my MBP to sleep, disconnected the power in its sleep, while something was connected to a USB port and unplugging the USB device (for me an iPhone charger) while the MBP was closed.
I hope this helps the next person.

  • Transferring data from external hard drive to new replacement Macbook Pro...

    Hello,
Apple have arranged to give me a replacement Macbook Pro due to faults with hardware on the one I am currently using. I will be going to pick up the replacement Macbook Pro tomorrow morning.
As a complete novice I just wanted to check that I have backed up the data from my current laptop onto my Iomega external hard drive properly, as I am slightly nervous about losing all my work and not being able to transfer all my files onto my new Macbook Pro tomorrow.
I did a back up using time machine earlier today which took quite a long time and seemed to go successfully. Is this the right thing to have done to save all data from my current laptop onto the external hard drive?
Will transferring data from the external hard drive onto my new Macbook Pro be a simple task?
Will I have to reinstall all my software such as Logic and Pro Tools? Also will my preferences and settings for music software be changed?
    I'd greatly appreciate any advice.
    Thanks,
    Deena

    Well it's like this.
If your problem on the Mac didn't affect the software or the TimeMachine backup, then restoring from that using SetupAssistant (when you first set up a new Mac it will ask you to restore) should go fine.
HOWEVER, if there are software issues on the Mac that also transferred to the TimeMachine drive, that will only transfer them back onto your new computer.
You can't very easily just pick out the things you want to restore from TimeMachine with, it doesn't give that fine detail of control, and if it's really messed up, it might not restore anything at all.
The golden rule of backups is to maintain two separate and easily accessible hardware copies of your data off the machine at all times.
Since you don't know for sure if the TimeMachine restore is going to work as intended, and your only other source is going to disappear, I'd advise a additional backup of your Music, Documents, Pictures and Movie folders etc., to another regular external drive via regular drag and drop copy methods.
The operating system and programs can all be reinstalled from fresh sources on the new machine, provided you have the AppleID and password, license codes for your programs, email passwords and any other necessary information to re-establish the license on the new machine.
(In some cases licensed software HAS NOT transferred to a new machine with a TimeMachine restore and had to be reinstalled)
Some times you have to contact the developer or "uninstall" the licensed program so it sends a signal to their servers that the program has been removed, else your license code may not work on the new machine.
You might decide the new machine would be better off with a fresh install of your programs that you know are 100% compatible with Lion etc., leaving a lot of older stuff you installed over the years off the new machine, if you restore from TimeMachine, you don't have this option. You pretty much get all the crap along for the ride,
If your new machine gets all crapped up, then restoring Lion is going to going to be a tough challenge, as you need a strong reliable Internet connection to download a fresh copy of Lion from Apple servers (no more disks). Once you do that, then somehow you have to use third party software ($$) to cherry pick your files out of TimeMachines trap. More headaches than you anticpated, and likely a charge by a specialist.
So I'd advise another hard drive with a copy of just your files, just in case a crap-up occurs
You can restore Lion yourself if it craps up, install programs from fresh sources as you know how to do, use the old license codes and then return your files manually exactly back into their same Music, Pictures, Documents, and Movies (etc, not Library) folders as before.
The key to this manual method is to make sure to use the same user name as before, so all your file location data pathnames retained by program files like iTunes to where the songs are located on the drive, are matched. Once you open these programs and restablish the links in OS X, then you can move them around.
Some tricks, if you use iPhoto, you can right click "show package contents" and inside is a folder with your Originals, copy that out and you can reimport your pictures into the new iPhoto Library on the new machine.
So use TM if you dare, but prepared to do things manually is my opinion.
TM restores have not been all that reliable or dependable, the more messed up your machine is, the worst the restore seems to be.
    Good Luck

  • How do you stop 'Transferring Data from...' in toolbar on first page of a website - eventually stops but takes a minute then loases some images on a site when complete - other browsers are fine.

Only happens on index page of website - Firefox repeatedly says 'connecting to site/transfering data from site in the status bar for about a minute before finally 'done', then some images on the index page are missing. All other browsers are fine - how do you turn off this problem in Firefox - there is nothing to download on the index page, already displayed but can't continue unless you jump to another page in the site. Searched web and many references to this but no definate answer. Code is same on all pages of site, just the index page which hangs.

  • I have recently transferred data from my old Mac to my new one. The result was good, but I have 2 users now, whose data I want to merge into 1 single user, so to avoid having to switch from one user to the other to view and use certain files. How to do it

I have recently transferred data from my old Mac to my new one. The result was good, but I have 2 users now, whose data I want to merge into 1 single user, so to avoid having to switch from one user to the other to view and use certain files. How to do it?

    Here's an easy way:
Pick the user that you want to eliminate (making sure that the remaining user has administrator privileges) and move all of the data that you want to keep into the Shared folder. Reboot or log out and login to the user you want to keep. Copy all the data from the Shared folder into your account - placing it neatly in folders (Documents, Music, Movies, etc.).
Once the data is moved, log into the account you want to delete just once more to make certain that you've grabbed all the data you want to keep. Log out and log back into your admin account and go to System Preferences>Users & Groups and delete the 'old' user.
    That should do it.

i just bought a new macbook w/ mtn lion. when i transferred data from my old macbook over, it created another user name (i called it "old computer"). That's actually good--I'm not going to be accessing old files frequently--except for music, which i want on my new user name. How do i move files from my "old comp" account to my new one? Is there a way to easily move large #'s of files, or just one by one? Unless you transfer the files from Setup Assistant, Migration Assistant creates a new user with the data.
To transfer the files to your first user, you have to log on this new user, and copy all your files to /Users/Shard folder. This is a folder where you can put the files you want to share between two or more users, and all users can read and write in it.
After copying the files, go to your first user, open /Users/Shared folder, and copy the files to your user folders. If you migrated applications, you must know that they are stored in a common folder (/Applications), so you don't have to transfer them. To open /Users/Shared folder, open Go menu (in the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type the folder
