Advise on using Branch office server as backup
Hello and thanks for assistance,
The site in question has four physical servers and two virtual servers. They have the following major functions. Server A is a DC/DNS server as well as hosting DFS files. Server B holds exchange server 2012A and the replica partner for DFS, Server C
has two virtual servers installed. First one is exchange 2012B and second one is the antivirus server. Server D is a DC and a witness server. It also holds WSUS. Backup is taking as long as 12 hours. I had an idea of moving Server C and D offsite and configuring
them as branch office servers using VPN. Then all data including mail will be offsite and eliminate the need for backups. All servers of course have RAID1 so my concern really is not hardware related but disaster recovery in the event of fire, flood, ect.
I know this idea may be full of holes but that is why I am posting this for your opinions. There are about 50 workstations in the network. The client is very dependent on the network.
Thanks
Ronald C. Pope
Hi Ronald,
Of course you can create offsite Exchange server and DC. The connection performance may be an issue as you must use site-to-site VPN incase you need a failover.
Both topics are discussed a lot in Exchange and DC forum:

Minimum number of users to warrant a branch office server
I'd suggest that it's nothing to do with the number of users, but rather what type and amount of work is going on. It could also be affected by a number of other issues; the speed of available Internet connection, how much support you have to provide, how far away from other officesetc. However, as an exampleI had a small site with about 7 staff using PCs and another 20+ staff working in a workshop; I set them up with a coupleof servers due to the work that was going on at that site. I had planned to virtualize these, but left before I got around to it.They wereproviding AD, DHCP, DNS, CA, Print Services to 3 printers, local file store, some database apps and a specialist bar code printer. We also had separate web filtering, a local PBX linked back to a central controller. Because it was a long way to travel to reach, we tried to make...
We have a branch office, currently housing 10 staff.
The office is to be expanded to 16.
Currently staff are using thin clients and logging into our Citrix Xenapp 6.5 server every day
The server comfortably copes with the 10 heads so far and is licenced to handle 20 concurrent connections.
What is the minimum number of heads before you would recommend adding a server to a branch office?

Branch office VPN connetion backup via 3G
Hello,
I have a security VPN architecture made of a couple redundant ASA in main office as a Hub and 880 serie routers as remote spokes.
I would like to have connectivity redundancy in order to have my spoke routers always connected to the hub.
I tought of using 887 ADSL router with 3G interface as backup but I don't have a clear idea of how I can make an automatic redundancy.
Do you have any document in where i can read any example?
I would like to have a primary VPN link via ATM interface and a secondary link on demand by 3G interface (public dynamic ip).
If necessary i can also think of changing the ASAs with new routers.
Thanks all
JohnnyAnyone have update for me?

Hi there i am having an issue that has popped up recently i have a DC at a branch office that is connected to the main office DC via a Persistent Demand Dial connection in RRAS. Everything was working properly according to me until i found out that the Network
Admin who manages the branch office network failed to notify me that client machines weren't getting IP addresses from the DHCP server. This server was recently installed and wasn't fully implemented till about a week ago when i configured the Demand Dial
connection in RRAS up until that point it just had a regular old VPN connection to the main office while we worked out the kinks with a few things. the things ive tried so far to get DHCP working are as followed
1.Rebooted the branch office server (MULTIPLE TIMES)
2. Uninstalled the DHCP Role and re-installed it....To my surprise 1 client managed to get a ip on its lan adapter after DHCP was re-installed but nothing else
3. Disconnected the connection between the main office DC and the Branch office DC as i figured the main office DC DHCP server might be interfering with the branch office DC DHCP Server but nothing happened
4. Unauthorized and Reauthorized the main office DHCP server and the branch office DHCP server nothing changed
5. sifted through multiple log files on both servers and found noting in fact DHCP logs are empty on both servers
6. restored backups of the DHCP servers from when they were working
7. came here cause im out of ideas and im pulling my hair out
here are the current statistics from the problem server

Id like to add that RRAS was getting IP addresses from the problem server up until the point i uninstalled the role and re-installed it

Branch Office Mail Server?
I have Mac OS X providing mail services to about 100 users at a main office. We are opening a branch office with 20-30 users. I'm wondering if it is possible to setup another mail server for the branch office using the same domain. The users at the branch office are moderately heavy users who will often deal with lots of attachments. I would like them to have an IMAP server that is local to them for better performance and to reduce traffic on the main office network.
I thought I'd give it a try. There's a field called "Mail Server" on the mail tab of WGM for each user. I put the address of the branch office server in that field. However, the main office server keeps the messages in its own mailstore. So, what's this field for? It doesn't seem to do anything.
I see a way to accomplish this by editing the postfix alias file for each user and adding a line for each branch office user like branchofficeuser: [email protected] but that wouldn't be so nice if I ever have to turn over administration of these servers to someone else.
Is there any way to distribute mail for users of the same domain across more than one IMAP server without resorting to entering aliases to subdomains for each user?x

Branch office WDS still pullinh image from main site
Hi,
I'm trying to configure a WDS on our branch site.
what i did was open a new folder named DeployFilesFromMaster on the branch office server and replicate the DeploymentShare from main to branch office using DFS.
then i installed WDS services on the branch office and add a Boot Image (taken from DeployFilesFromMaster)
next i configured, under Scope Option on the DHCP server, options 66 (giving the ip address of the branch WDS), and option 67 (giving the path \Boot\x64\wdsnbp.com).
now when I'm booting a computer into PXE it start working, but when pressing F8 and use the netstat command i see it has a session to my main office deploy server instead to the branch office.
what do i need to change?
when looking in the branch office server, there is ofcourse the DeployFilesFromMaster folder and there is another folder named DeploymentShare that was made while installiing the WDS server, and there is a wdsnbp.com file as well. how do I know, when DHCP
direct me to the boot file name, that it direct me to the right file, or it doesnt matter.
thanks for your helpThe variable WDSSERVER is a variable that is figured out by MDT when booting a machine using the boot image created by Microsoft Deployment Toolkit. Therefore it is not available in Windows.
If you want different WSUS servers depending on location of the client you can use for instance this technique in CustomSettings.ini. This will point clients on a specific subnet to a specific WSUS server.

Content Server - MaxDB Backup Strategy
Hello Experts,
I am new to MaxDB and Content Server. Please help me to my below queries which will be very helpful to me.
1. I have installed content server 6.40 MaxDB 7.6.
2. I have installed DBStudio for MaxDb Administration.
3. I have installed ADINT/TSM Client as I need to use IBM TSM server for backup/restore.
Please provide me the steps to do backup/restore of MaxDb database using TSM.
Thank you again.

Karthick EswaranLars,
You are very quick. Working on Sunday as well!
I have checked the location /usr/tivoli/tsm/adint64/temp but there is nothing in that location.
But how did you identify that this is the issue with TSM Client?
Where will be the log file stored for MaxDB and TSM Client?
Please let me know how to check whether the pipe is created or not?
After changing the backup script to :

How take Branch offices backup centrally through DPM 2012 Server
Hi
I have one HQ and 200 branch offices. I want to take the backup of 200 branch offices centrally through DPM 2012 server.
To achieve this solution what procedure i have to follow. Shall i go with one DPM server at HQ or i have to configured each DPM server at branch offices.
I have 3 MBS link in each offices.
Thanks and Regards DeepakI'm not sure there is a simple, easy answer. It depends on what you want to achieve via the DPM protection. My two cents is to have your DPM servers for the branch offices running at your HQ location so your backups are "offsite". This
will protect you in the event a branch office is lost. All protection elements except for BMR are pretty efficient with DPM and you can compress the traffic from your branch locations.
You can have multiple DPM servers at HQ and balance your server protection load across that farm.
You may want to have a DPM server at a branch location that protects some of your HQ servers to provide an offsite backup for HQ resources.
Be careful with BMR backups across WAN links. The BMR sends the entire BMR backup every time. And the BMR backup can include multiple drives if you happened to have installed applications on something other than the system drive (C:). You
can get a list of all the drives that will be included in the BMR backup by running this command on a server: "wbadmin start backup -allcritical -backuptarget:\\localhost\c$". Just hit CTRL-C after it shows you the drives that will be included.
You'll need to run the DPM backup across a private link or via site-to-site tunnels. I don't recommend trying to do a DPM backup with a firewall between the two sites. I'm sure it could be done...but I don't recommend it.

Proper Configuration of DNS server for our new branch office
Hi All,
Our new office will setup a new branch office with a routed network link to our HO. In HO, we have 2 domain controllers configured as AD and DNS just for fail over scenarios.
How will we configure the DNS server of our 3rd domain controller which we will placed in the new branch office. What would be the proper settings of DNS server integrated to AD to work well especially to have a successful replication and communication to
the 2 DC's located in HO?Hi,
If you have multiple DC's in that site i would recommend using any of the partner DC's IP addresses as preferred one and secondary DNS IP to pointing to itself. Dont use loopback addresses configure it with actual IP addresses.
If you have only one server in branch office point itself as the primary DNS and HO DC as secondary and tertiary.
Make sure that all clients in your branch site are pointing to the branch DC as primary DNS server.
Regards,
Rafic

Advise Requested - Building a Home Server using Solaris 10
I'm currently a Wintel sysadmin, and I'm relatively new to Unix. I know the basics, and I have been reading up on it. I'll be taking a the 200 level Sun class in August or September. I'll be working with Solaris on an increased basis at work very soon. Since I've been thinking of building a home server for some time I thought it would be a good opportunity (and challenge) to teach myself Solaris by building a server with Solaris 10 for Intel processors.
I would like to setup a server with a RAID mirror. It's mostly going to be a Samba file server, Apache web server, and backup server for all of my home Windows Vista PCs. I'll likely put in two 1 terabite HDDs in it. I might also use it as a VPN server for my home network eventually as a I learn more.
Does anyone have suggestions they could give me on hardware? I prefer to build an ATX compliant clone.
So far this is the motherboard I'm considering:
http://www.mwave.com/mwave/skusearch.hmx?&scriteria=BA23931
ANY ADVISE would be greatly appreciated!!!!Change your SSH port to something other than 22! Make sure your ssh keys use passphrases. You can setup keychain (ssh-agent) on the server and clients to keep keys in memory if you desire without constantly retyping (and for automated backups).

Synchronizing multiple Mac Mini Server Open Directories across branch offices
Greetings from Central Asia -
The non-profit that I work with has been undergoing a long-overdue IT upgrade and we recently purchased some Mac Mini Servers (still running Snow Leopard Server) to act as the core of our network across our 3 offices in 3 different cities.
We have employees moving between offices regularly, so I'm hoping to find a way to synchronize our user database between our head office and our branch offices instead of creating separate databases in each location. We use RADIUS and pfSense with a CaptivePortal for controlling who has internet access as well as have file shares, so keeping user database management to a minimum is an ideal.
I come from a mostly Microsoft Domain background with regards to these things so I'm not entirely sure where to start. Hopefully some hopeful folks here will steer me in the right direction!
I have a (mostly) unrelated question though - OS X Server seems to have two separate user databases - the "local" DB and the LDAP/OpenDirectory DB. Is there a way to make these function together? When creating users and assigning them to groups, which is best practice to use? How do I give an LDAP/OD user login rights to the server?
Thanks in advance,
TimI would prefer to keep the two databases seperate, with the local database providing a few specific users with access when OD is inaccessable.
The local database is basically a self-hosted LDAP server.
The local and OD databases do function with the appearance of one single user account presentation at login and for typical operations, too.
Do keep all of the usernames unique; the local users, as well as the OD users.
For your configuration, the usual pattern here is one or more open directory replicas in each lobe of the network.
These replicas then coordinate with the master copy among themselves. You'll have one distributed copy, but the lobes won't be tied to authentication across what may or may not be an entirely stable network; users authenticate off the local replica.
There are also folks that use Microsoft Active Directory as the back-end for Mac OS X, as well; there are various means to this end, including what is known as the magic triangle configuration.
As for learning more about OD, I'd read the Snow Leopard Server Open Directory administration documentation as a starting point. The Lion Server documentation is thin.
The Mac Enterprise Mailing List archives can also be enlightening; that's probably the most concentrated source of information on more complex management environments. -
Advise on using DBMS_XA with multiple branches under one global transaction
Dear all
I need some advise on using DBMS_XA from PL/SQL with tightly coupled multiple branches under one global transaction. Basically, I've successfully written some PL/SQL code that in 3 different sessions attaches to 3 different branches of one global transaction and before ending each branch they can see each others uncommitted data. So far so good.
However, I'm not sure I completely understand how each branch must call xa_end, xa_prepare and xa_commit correctly using two phase commit and my calls result in errors like:
ORA-24767: transaction branch prepare returns read-only (XA error code 3 = Transaction was read-only and has been committed)
ORA-24756: transaction does not exist (XA error code -4 = XID is not valid)
ORA-02051: another session or branch in same transaction failed or finalized
This is the structure of my programs (3 SQL*Plus sessions):
main: Uses xid 123|0 (branch 0 of global transaction 123). This should be the coordinator that commits using two phase commit across the 3 branches
m1.xa_start tmnoflags
m2.DML
m3.Wait for thread A + B to manually be started and run xa_end
m4.xa_end tmsuccess
m5.xa_prepare
m6.xa_commit false
thread A: Uses xid 123|A (branch A of global transaction 123)
a1.xa_start tmnoflags
a2.DML -- thread A can see main and thread B's data
a3.xa_end tmsuccess
a4.xa_prepare -- required?
a5.Should we also call xa_commit false?
thread B: Uses xid 123|B (branch B of global transaction 123)
b1.xa_start tmnoflags
b2.DML -- thread B can see main and thread A's data
b3.xa_end tmsuccess
b4.xa_prepare -- required?
b5.Should we also call xa_commit false?
The failing steps are:
m5
m6
a4
a5
b4
b5
Before starting calling xa_end I see 3 rows in V$GLOBAL_TRANSACTION, eg (hex 7B = decimal 123):
FORMATID GLOBALID BRANCHID BRANCHES REFCOUNT PREPARECOUNT STATE FLAGS COUPLING
203348753 0000007B 00000000000000000000000000000000 3 3 0 ACTIVE 0 TIGHTLY COUPLED
203348753 0000007B 0000000000000000000000000000000A 3 3 0 ACTIVE 0 TIGHTLY COUPLED
203348753 0000007B 0000000000000000000000000000000B 3 3 0 ACTIVE 0 TIGHTLY COUPLED
Thanks a lot in advance.
Cheers
FinnOK, I've figured it out. This is poorly documented as it's not well explained how to handle the various return codes. Turns out that all but the last xa_prepare calls return dbms_xa.xa_rdonly (tightly coupled branches are combined -- "read only" optimization), the last one returns dbms_xa.xa_ok and this is when you should call xa_commit.
Now my next problem is that DBMS_XA doesn't work from within jobs (DBMS_JOB and DBMS_SCHEDULER), which makes it very difficult to use DBMS_XA. My purpose of using DBMS_XA is to coordinate work across multiple sessions in one transaction but if I can't easily create the multiple sessions, I'm stuck.
When called from a job, xa_start throws:
ORA-24789: start not allowed in recursive call
on Oracle 11.2. In Oracle 11.1 it works, but xa_end fails with
ORA-25352: no current transaction
so I guess in fact the xa_start call didn't really work either, even though it returned tm_ok.
I'm now trying to find a workaround on how to use DBMS_XA from within jobs, please comment if you have any suggestions. Or if you have any suggestions on other means of establishing the concurrent sessions (I wouldn't like to resort to external programs that need username/password to connect as password management would be a security issue).
Thanks in advance.
Cheers

I am using MS Office 2010 and Windows XP Professional, can I use iCloud for backup of my files and documents? I am planning to transition to a Mac so using the iCloud seems to make the most sence.
No, it is not a backup method at all. If you delete a sync'd file on any device, you delete it permanently from iCloud. That by its very essence is not a backup solution therefore. A backup solution does not automatically and simultaneiously delete the file everywhere when it is deleted from the original source.
iCloud is strictly a syncronization tool for using files on multiple internet connected devices. -
Branch Office Direct Printing - server offline?
Hi All,
We are implementing Branch Office Direct Printing and I have a question about when the server is down or, in the case of a WAN connection to/from the branch going down, the client being unable to reach the server.
I could have sworn I originally read about Windows 8/2012 being smart enough to send the print job straight from the client to the printer in cases where it can't talk to the server, but now I seem unable to locate that information. Is that indeed
the case (hopefully)?
Thanks,
WesBranch Office Direct Printing may benefit your organization in the following ways:
Client computers running Windows Server 2012 obtain printer information from the print server, but send the
print jobs directly to the printer. The print data no longer travels to the central server and then back to the branch office printer.
The printer information is cached in the branch office, so that if the print server is unavailable for some
reason (for example if the WAN link to the data center is down), then it is still possible for the user to print.
The client computer renders the print job before sending it to the printer. The major difference between Branch Office Direct
Printing and Client-Side Rendering (CSR) is that Branch Office Direct Printing does not send the print job to the server. Instead the job is sent directly to the printer, resulting
in a significant reduction in network bandwidth usage when the printers are centrally managed.

Branch Office - Mobile Server connection problem
Branch Office is successfully installed on a XP-PC inclusive the services are started, Mobile -Server is installed on a remote Server. After login with user and password in http://localhost/webtogo/ "Branch Office Web" it takes a while (we think in case of synchronization) but then we get the message at the left side of the browser "javax.servlet.ServletException: Could not get Automatic Sync Status"
We think its a problem of the connection to the Mobile-Server but we have no Idea, how we can solve this problem because we can't verify the problem. There is no firewall and no restriction in our network.
We hope that anybody has an idea!BTW. How may concurrent user can be support by Oracle9iLite?
