Advisor Dock Icon Customization

Hi, folks!
I have a new Pavillion dv6.  I love it! The Advisor Dock, however, is being stubborn.  I customize it the way I want, adding icons and removing them.  And that's terrific.  Until I restart my computer, when it resets itself.  Every time I turn my computer on, the dock goes back to its original configuration.  Any ideas?
Thanks!

It was in the Desktop forum, and was moved to the Notebook one.

  • How do i remove or move icon "customize dock" that can't be moved, deleted, selected, opened, etc.

    The "Customize Dock" icon (looks like a gear) seems indestructible.  I can't move it, select it, open it, delete it, etc.  It appears on all pages that I open in the foreground.

    Hello dlishan
    What operating system are you using? Please elaborate on what you mean by "customize dock"? Are you referring to "HP Advisor Dock Customization"?
    Also if you could, please attach a screenshot of the problem.

  • HP Advisor Dock - Customize Width and Scroll no longer working.

    Hi there,
    I've seen quite a few posts about not liking the Advisor Dock because it takes up space but I on the other hand quite like it. I put a lot of my shortcuts and icons there because it saves space and I could scroll between different icons just by swiping.
    Without going into too much detail, my HP advisor just updated itself and now the slide to scroll feature doesn't work. it just picks up an icon and drags it.
    Is there any way I can reenable this ? is there a config file somewhere?
    I noticed they changed the size of the bar as well, possibly to fit their new lines of products but I'd like to resize it back to the way it was also.
    Can you help?

    Hi eg1978
    Welcome to the HP Forums! I see that you are having issues with your two finger scrolling. I have a couple of things for you to try. This HP document Using and Configuring the TouchPad has a section on Turning individual gestures off and on and make sure that the two finger scrolling is enabled. If that does work then reinstall your Synaptics TouchPad Driver.

  • Disabling certain mail accounts from "new message count" in Mail dock icon

    Hi,
    I'd like to disable two of my mail accounts from affecting the new message count that appears over mail's dock icon. How might I do this?
    Thanks in advace

    the only option you have is to choose between all mailboxes and inbox, in mail>preferences>general
    other than that, you may want to look at plugins such as dockstar to do more customization of the notification features: http://www.ecamm.com/mac/dockstar/
    hope this helps

  • Change dock icon.

    Hello ,
    How can i change default dock icon of my carbon application to my choice.
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    Sunil Adhayaru.

    X11 has a menu named "Applications" in the menu bar. In there is an option to "Customize Menu…".
    In the window that appears, you can edit any of the commands just by double-clicking on the name, command, or shortcut.
    This will change what appears in the "Applications" menu, both in the menu bar for X11 and in the Dock menu for X11.

  • ICal dock icon wont update in Leopard

    My iCal dock icon has stopped updating the current date.
    I have dragged the icon off the dock and re-dragged a fresh version from the iCal application but this only works for the current day where again it will not update the next day.
    I have had Leopard for almost 2 months and this problem has only just started in the last week.

    Yes, I have the same problem as well. And it started happening after the recent software update. I have also tried the suggested solution - dragging out the icon and restarting, but it still doesn't work.
    When I upgraded to Leopard I was happy that everyday the iCal icon updated the date automatically, but I think the Tiger way of launching iCal at login and hiding its window would have to be the solution in Leopard as well

  • Hiding a program with no dock icon

    I am looking for a way to hide an application which is running without a dock icon.
    I have tried using spirited away but as soon as I hide the dock icon(space suit is the app in question)spirited away can no longer find the application.
    The reason for my enquiry is that space suit creates a window in expose called "SpaceSuitWin" which is taking up unnecessary space and at times making other window preview so small that they are indecipherable.
    Any feedback would be awesome, not sure if this is even possible but any work arounds or alternatives are welcome. Also a fairly novice user so any tech. solutions may need to be well explained.
    Thanks

    Find the info.plist file in the Application, and edit it.
    Put this:
    <key>LSUIElement</key>
    <string>1</string>
    just above the penultimate </dict> entry.
    You might have to move the application to update the registry. Then move it back. Relaunch.
    You need to be aware that this will also eliminate the menu bar, which might be problematic depending upon the application.

  • Mouse over dock icon no longer indicates "application not responding"

    A very convenient feature seems to be missing from Snow Leopard. In prior versions, if an application was not responding, holding the cursor over its dock icon would display "[Application] Not Responding" and also an option to Force Quit. This status message does not appear in Snow Leopard.
    Are we to assume that if we click and hold on a dock icon and "Force Quit" is presented as an option, that the application has stopped responding?
    Suggestions?

    So if I click and hold a dock icon and "Force Quit" is shown instead of "Quit" would that indicate that the particular application is in the midst of some process and simply unable to respond?
    Should I simply allow more time for the app to finish whatever it's doing?
    it could be either. sometimes an application is busy and is showing as not responding but will come out of it after a while. but sometimes it's truly hanging and then you have to force quit it to get rid of it. there is no way to tell just by looking at the dock. give it a bit of time and if it's still not responding then force quit. but if it's happening all the time then you may have problems with your system.
    In particular, here, I've launched DiskWarrior 4.2 on a Mini (via Screen Sharing from my Mac Pro) in an attempt to rebuild directory on a My Book 1TB external drive connected by FireWire, which Disk Utility indicates needs repair but DU cannot repair. Ideas?
    so what does disk warrior say when you try to rebuild the directory? and you should also verify the internal drive on the mini too.

  • Is there a way to open a new tab/window by clicking the Safari dock icon?

    Is there a way to open a new tab or window by clicking the Safari dock icon? Right now, the default behavior seems to be that Safari simply un-minimizes or displays the last window in focus.
    I want to be able to quickly fire up a new tab or window in Safari when it is out of focus, such as when Finder is in focus. The workaround right now is to right-click on the Safari dock icon, and select "New Window", or to allow the last window in focus to appear, and cmd+t or cmd+n. But this is too many steps over the course of a day for a highly frequented task like this.

    I'm glad that helped. Thanks for posting back.
    ... when I save this as an application as "run only", it's relatively quick to run, but there's a delay to load... I assume it's opening Script Editor every time?
    As long as the script is saved as an application -- Run Only or not -- it should definitely not cause the Script Editor to open. You can verify this by closing the Script Editor application altogether prior to clicking on the docked script icon that you saved. You should notice that the Script Editor does not open when the script is run.
    FWIW, I went back and saved a version of the script as a Run Only app, and I didn't notice any difference between it and the original, which was saved without the Run Only option checked. The delay that you're noticing might be accounted for by the fact that the script, because it was saved as an application, will be activated just as any other standalone application would be. This happens prior to Safari being activated. Watch your menu bar when clicking on the docked script icon and you should see the name of the saved script app appear for a split second before Safari gets activated.
    The only time I can think of that you might wish to save the script as a Run Only application would be if you wanted to conceal the script for some reason. If, for example you were publishing the script as a part of an application release and didn't want its contents known, or you didn't want an end user to be able to edit the script, you might select the Save As > Run Only option. To illustrate this, try dragging and dropping a script saved as a Run Only application onto the Script Editor's icon. You should see a warning dialog to this effect:
    *Unable to read the file because the script is not editable (it was saved as run-only).*
    Whereas if you drag a script that was not saved as a Run Only app onto the Script Editor's icon, the script should open in the Editor, and it can be edited.
    I played around with the "stay open" option for saving the script as an application, but it appears I have to close the app and reopen it before I can get it to work a second time.
    The Stay Open option is appropriate for scripts which use an "On Idle" handler, which really wouldn't apply in this case. Check out more on Idle Handlers here and here.
    Is there a faster way to use this multiple times throughout the day?
    One way you might speed up the action would be to save the script +as a script+ by choosing Save As > File Format: script from the Script Editor's File menu. The resulting script can then be activated by assigning a hot key to it using one of several 3rd-party keyboard shortcut programs available on the Internet. (I used Spark, assigned a function key to the script I posted earlier, and found the action to run significantly faster.)
    Good luck.

  • 10.6.8 Unable to click in text boxes or on utility menu at top of screen, Dock icons lead to containing folders instead of programs

    As stated in my subject, periodically I become unable to click in text boxes (in my browser, addresses/search) and am also unable to click on the various icons in the utility bar at the top of the screen such as bluetooth and volume control etc.  Also, when this occurs if I click on Applications or one of my Dock icons it leads to the containing folder as a destination instead of the program itself.  It resolves itself after awhile, but I can fix it immediately by unplugging my mouse and plugging it back in.  At that point, everything works fine as if nothing ever happened.  What is strange to me is that it fazes in and out, while being able to return to being fully operational.

    Have you tried adding the following css selector to your css file.
    .nav-bar a {
        text-align: center;
    or insert it in the <style> tag you have on the page:
      <style type="text/css">
      body {
        margin-left: 200px;
      .n {
        text-align: center;
    .nav-bar a {
        text-align: center;
      </style>

  • Can't stop the dock icon bouncing when there is an "alert" from Thunderbird

    I posted this question on the MozillaZine forum, but no-one there answered so I thought I'd try here.
    I'm using Thunderbird 2.0.0.14 for my email. Is there a way to stop the dock icon bouncing when there is an "alert"? These happen relatively frequently in connection with my Yahoo account, and every time the icon bounces until I go to Thunderbird and click "ok" on the alert box. This is slowly driving me nuts. I have disabled the "animate dock icon" setting for new mail, and for my whole system when programs start or open, but it hasn't had any effect on the behaviour of the icon with regards to alerts.
    Thanks.
    C

    Sorry, I am not trying to be difficult. I'm just lost.
    Hey, no problem, really... we're here trying to help & just need to find out what is needed to help!
    You really should right click on the whole Thubderbird folder and Archive it first, so we can go back if need be.
    Then, it appears that if you just recreate the account, with the name, email, server, and smtp, then everything comes back for that account... at least for global accounts.
    If you wish to hold off on this then just move the original .js back and start T-Bird again, then I can search for a way to edit the existing .js file, because for some reason, when you change your prefs back, it's not changing that file like it should.

  • Updated apps break links with dock icons (Mac OS)

    When apps are updated via the CC desktop app, they sometimes (not always) come down with a new name which causes the link in the dock to break.
    This would be a nuisance with one or two apps, but when a CC user has (like I do) a dozen icons in their dock it means that every major update requires several broken dock icons to be replaced. And if (like me) the user has more than one login on their machine (for separate personal and business workspaces) then the nuisance is doubled.
    For example, I have just downloaded "Adobe Edge Animate CC 2014.1", which has removed the earlier version leaving an orphaned dock icon ("Adobe Edge Animate CC 2014"), for the sake of adding ".1" to the file name.
    As a general principle, version numbers do not belong in an application name; there is a perfectly good field in the file info window for version number which is where practically every other vendor puts theirs.
    This comes on top of the muddle of versions which has meant there are three "current" versions of some apps, for instance Photoshop (CS6, CC and CC 2014).
    The other problem with your system is that in a few short months "CC 2014" apps will be outdated, if not in practise, certainly in name.
    Some creative brains need to be exercised on this, don’t leave it to the nerds.

    If it happens in a new user you may be able to repair this with the 10.5.4 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
    Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

  • Thin black horizontal lines on 24" iMac screen/transparent dock icons

    I have a 24" 3.06 GHz iMac (purchased in August 2008) and noticed after about a half hour of running basic programs (Mail, iTunes, Firefox) I start to get horizontal lines near the top and bottom of my screen. Then if I watch a full screen video I can see my dock icons look almost transparent through the video. I took my iMac into the Apple store last month and told them about it and they kept it for 3 days and ran their "tests" and stressed the computer out to get it to do it for them but they couldn't replicate the problem. They suggested that it might be my cordless phone is too close to the screen and the frequency of the cordless phone could be causing the problem but I tried moving the phone and it still does it. When the display is off for hours and I turn it back on the lines are not there, but once I have it on for a half hour they come back and don't go away until I power off or sleep the display. I've attached a few pics of what I'm experiencing. Thank you very much.

    Since the Apple Store folks could not replicate the problem, you may want to consider a cause that is part of your particular environment.
    For example, if you use a power strip (surge suppressor), what else is connected to the same power strip? Is it possible that you may have too many power-hungry devices connected to the same single wall outlet, and the iMac is not getting sufficient power? Or maybe it's some electrical interference with another device on the same circuit? As a test, try disconnecting everything else, and see if the problem recurs, or connect the iMac directly to a wall outlet by itself to see if the problem recurs.
    Try moving the iMac to a different location in your home and running it to see if the problem recurs.

  • OSX: FF running, but no windows open - clicking on the dock icon should open a new window.

    Running OSX 10.5.8, FF3.6.10. If I close all FF windows, but leave FF running, I should be able to open a new FF window by clicking the dock icon. This doesn't work - it just brings FF to the front, but no windows open. Any ideas how I can fix this?

    Is an external display connected and turned off? If not, open Mission Control. Do you see the window(s) in any other spaces?

  • Dock icons (except finder) have been replaced by question marks (?'s)

    Hi - I was recently creating some user accounts and trying to set up some file sharing, although, when I returned to my account the dock icons had all been replaced by ?'s and I can't seem to use any of the programs.

    Further to this, I have fixed the problem. I had inadvertantly taken away my own permission to access the applications folder and everything in it. Once I reinstated my permission, the question marks disappeared leaving everything as it was. Problem solved.
