Since adware is usually installed by legitimate software, most A-V software won't even report it and those that do are not designed to remove it all. Hopefully you have used AdwareMedic by now to identify and optionally remove it by now.
See the Apple solution at Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac.
To understand why this happened and how to avoid it in the future see John Galt’s How to install adware.
BTW, you need to update your profile as it says you are still running OS X 10.8.3.

I have purchases under an expired AOL account and very old Mac that I can no longer listen to on current versions of iTunes.  Previous version of iTunes accepted the music.  Now, I have a group of songs that will not sync to my iPod because it is associated with the old AOL account.  What do I do?

If you have an iBook G4, (PPC) you can't do much.
But if that is a MacBook (intel) you may be able to
upgrade the OS X, if the hardware is up to it...
Since there were about nine different build models
of MacBook (not powerpc iBook) to identify what
one you have would be the first step to knowing
what OS X and RAM upgrades it could use.
If the computer is not already at OS X 10.6.8,
it can't go online to get or use OS X 10.7.5. So,
when you more accurately describe the 'Book,
    detailed information is available.
When you find the serial number, there is a web
page that can be used to identify by serial no.
    http://www.powerbookmedic.com/identify-mac-serial.php
That'd be a first step. Or even the Model number
which should be visible on the outer case by hinge.
    Good luck & happy computing!

Does anybody know any software for the Mac that I can run round robin, single and double elimination tournaments?  I help run tournaments but using excel for pool play and the web for bracket play, but if wifi is not available I have no way of running brackets for prize play.  Can some one help point me in the direction of software that I can use locally on my Mac Pro.

  • How can I add new content in iDVD to a DVD-RW disc which has ample remaining free space? After preparing the new video for burning and clicking on Burn to iDVD, I get a window saying the disc's already recorded and that I can either Erase or Eject.

How can I add new content in iDVD to a DVD-RW disc with a video previously successfully recorded on it? (The disc has ample remaining free space.)
After preparing the new video for burning and clicking in the File menu on Burn to iDVD, I get a window saying the disc's already recorded and that I can either Erase or Eject. My assumption has been that iDVD would automatically find the free space and continue with the new recording from there. I'd be grateful if anyone can shine light on this.

There are, but not with a DVD written as a movie disk. It must be closed when completed, or it doesn't work.
Apple's built in Burn utility also automatically closes any data CD, DVD or Blu-ray disk you burn. Doesn't matter how much space is unused, you can't use it. You'd have to use a more advanced disk creation app, such as Toast Titanium. I then have the option of choosing to write the data as a session:
I can keep doing this until the disk is full. If I've written five sessions to the disk, when I put it in the drive, five CD/DVD icons will appear on the desktop since the OS will treat each session as if they are separate physical disks. At any point you choose Write Disk when writing a group of data, that means you're closing the disk, and again can't add anything after that. So if I had written two sessions, and the third was Write Disk, it's over. I can't put anything else on that disk.

5.3 gigs of saved messages that I can't erase ? Need Help to Erase ?

This is a know bug in how iOS is reporting your storage usage.  It is avtually an artifact from iOS 6 or possibly even iOS 5.  For now, the only way to get it to report correctly is to restore your device as "new" and re-install all your applications manually.  If you try to restore from a backup, the corrupt information will be restored along with the "good" information.
From what I recall, it has somethign to do wth the way iOS handles deleting attached images which were received via iMessage.  Something about the message is deleted, but the image is orphaned, and is no longer tied to the message, so you can't view it.  You might be able to view the images via the "search" capabilities, but I don'r know what that would do for you.

Not sure if it will help but if you had registered it with Apple you could try unregistering it.  To do this:
    Go to: https://supportprofile.apple.com/MySupportProfile.do
Log in if not already logged in.
Click on ">" to the right of the device you want to unregister
    Click "unregister"

  • App for accessing remote files on a mac that you can play in another app

    Hey all,
Anyone know of an app that will allow me to access files stored on a mac connected to the same wifi that I can play the file through another app in the iPhone without the file being transferred to the phone?
For example, I want to be able to access a m4v stored on my mac over wifi, within the iPhone, to be played with a video player that I can send to a TV with the composite cable.
I found NetPortal, which works quite well, but you need to transfer the file to your iphone and even then, it wont open with many apps. I tried transferring a m4v file to my phone and it only gave me goodreader as an app to open the file with. I could simply transfer the file I want to access using my USB cable to my iPhone much faster.
Simply, I want to be able to stream movies from my Mac, through my iPhone to a TV and I am finding it hard to find Apps that allow such a thing.
    Any suggestions?

I already have that setup at home. I want to be able to use this when I am on the road.
I already use StreamToMe and Airvideo, but sometimes the quality is quite bad, which is mainly cause by my low upload speed. So I am looking for higher quality alternatives. I carry around a macbook air a lot so I figured I could store lots of movies for on the road to be played on other's tvs when were taking it easy.
I am always so amused by responses on this forum. The solution is always to buy something.

  • Home media server for mac, that you can also get to remotely.  Any ideas?  I am out of space on my macbook pro hard drive and appletv.  Need some sort of media server for delivery to macs, ipods, ipads, etc.  Any suggestions?

    Hi,
I have been using my macbook pro as a home media server, hosting most content on the macbook with ipod touch, ipads, and appletv streaming/sharing content.  I have run out of space on both the macbook pro and the apple tv and am looking to moving the content to a home media server.  Any thoughts/suggestions?  I'd like something that I can access remotely too.  I have an old slingbox and also have a static IP address.
Any thoughts/suggestions would be most welcome!

Don't worry I've sorted it! I just had to turn off Reminders as well in iCloud. Calendar then worked fine, even when I turned Calendar and Reminders back on.

  • New Mac w/Leopard can I erase 10.5 and replace w/10.4?

Just bought a new MacPro 2.66 etc. I have a powerBk G4 w/10.4 The new mac has 10.5 installed from Fac. Can I erase this and reinstall w/10.4? Is this ok to do?
The truth is, I have a lot of software running 10.4 and IT IS STABLE. I am not sure I want the hassel of upgradeing, spending more $ and time to deal w/problems right now. Busy, busy busy.

    Rocketshipjack
I wish I could help you, but I ran into problems when I tried to re-install 10.4 on my iMac G5 2.1 ghz. Like quite a few Mac users, I have run into various problems/issues. When installing Leopard, I did an "Erase & Install", but still experienced several of the issues others on this board has mentioned.
So, to get back that happy and content feeling I have had since I switched to Mac a few years ago, I decided to re-install Tiger. But - no way.
When rebooting my iMac with the Tiger installation DVD, it after a while replaced the grey apple in the boot-up window with an icon showing a forbidden sign (you know, the "O" with a slash through it).
A little frustrated, I ejected the DVD, continued the boot and then tried again. Same thing - full stop and I was not allowed to continue. I may mention that I am not talking about an upgrade/downgrade install - I didn´t even get to the point where you can begin the installation and make a choice.
I then restarted with the Leopard DVD and from the menu found the disk utilities and erased the disk (no turning back now - lol), hoping it would wipe Leopard and leave the disk clean enough for Tiger to be installed.
With the Tiger DVD in the computer, I restarted again. With a sinking feeling I got the same "forbidden" sign in the boot-up window. That is when I was becoming a little sad, since I had run of options (at least the options I knew about).
I managed to eject the Tiger DVD and had no choice but to reinstall Leopard. However, now I suddenly got the choice to "Install OS X for the first time" during the setup process. Since all my stuff was erased anyway (yes, of course it was backed up when I started ), I chose this option.
And the funny thing is that I have a feeling that Leopard works slightly better now. If it is due to the erasing of the disk or the fact that I installed the 10.5.1 directly after installing 10.5, I cannot tell. But it feels a bit better than it did the first time.
Why I was not allowed to reinstall Tiger, even after erasing Leopard first and on a computer that originally came with Tiger, I cannot tell. I may mention that I also did reset the pram, but it made no difference.
Again - maybe not helpful, but wanted to share my experience since I know your feeling
    All the best,
    Espen

  • I have found Adware.Adpopup on my Mac.  How can I get rid of it?

Two days ago every time I open Safari I am getting heaps of adds and pages opening when I click on anything;  In addition, I noticed that a lot of the words now are blue with two lines under them and they are ads.  My Anti-virus has detected Adware.Adpopup  but I cant seem to figure out how to get rid of it!  Any suggestions?

You installed the "DownLite" trojan, perhaps under a different name. Remove it as follows.
Malware is constantly changing to get around the defenses against it. The instructions in this comment are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "VSearch" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/Jack.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
    /Library/Application Support/VSearch
    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/Jack
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot" or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
This trojan is distributed on illegal websites that traffic in pirated movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect much worse to happen in the future.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the DownLite developer has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing, has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight is inexcusable and has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • How to tell my Mac that Windows can be booted?

    Hey! Hello again.
I have found myself in a very stressing situation: I can`t boot windows.
Windows can't be recognized as an OS right now.
I got a windows partition using bootcamp and I was happy with it for almost a year, but recently(the last week) I installed Avast and I don't know what happened, it deleted some file that allowed windows to load and when the windows loading screen ended, it always made my Mac to restart.
So, tired of seeing which files were required to make windows start, I created another windows partition with Disk Utility (boot camp didn't allow me).
And the plan was to have all my files on the new windows and then delete the "corrupted" one. But I'm a GENIUS (sarcasm), I didn't consider that the first windows partition was "official" and made by Boot Camp, so, now, the new Windows can't even appear on the white screen when choosing OS's.
I press Alt (option) on the white screen and only Snow Leopard appears. The only way I see to solve my problem is to backup my files on an external HD and delete the partitions (except for mac, of course).
I added a picture to show the mess I created, don't flame me, I'm experimenting.

    Wrong course of action.
    Should have uninstalled
    rollback (restore points)
    boot from Windows DVD
    you can't create more partitions
you could have just done a new install and reformatted the old partition
then setup backup system image for restore in the future
undo what you did and try a new direction.

  • Why are there folders on my mac that i can't open. says i don't have permission! its is mine

There is a folder I have found on my HD. called user templates. It tells me I don't have permission to open this? This is my computer! Why can't i open it?

FireFox can't open lots of files it isn't suposed to. DMG is opened by the Mac osx as a virtual volume file you just drag the FireFox icon to where you want it installed. Check your desktop for a FireFox volume... like a drive. Double click the DMG file if it is not there. This is how Mac works it has nothing to do with FireFox, many apps install this way!

  • How do I make sure my child can't see my books now that I can't erase it from her device?

I Erased them and clicked "hideicloud books" but all she has to do is switch it and they're all back.

when I could open iPhoto the library had tripled... photos from years ago from my iPhone and iPhoto had somehow come back onto it (even though I deleted them), the "faces" files had turned into their own photos, photos tripled (some smaller versions some bigger), and loads of random clip art and images I had never seen was on it. There was over 40,000 photos. It was so weird
Nothing weird. That happens when you import one iPhoto Library into another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
    As for deletions:
Drag the image from the Event to the iPhoto Trash. Empty it. Then Empty the System Trash. That removes it from the hard disk.
If that has failed in the past it was due to the Library being corrupted.
    Hello from Clare.

  • How do I erase an older Western Digital 1TB mirrored hard drive? Newer drives can be erased via a WD Utility, but the WD site says to "ask Apple" about the older ones.

I have a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.7.5.  The hard drive is approx. six years old - a Western Digital for Macs, mirrored with 1TB on each half.
Because the drive is "infected" with Time Machine backups that I can't erase, I have removed all important files from the drive and now want to wipe it clean.  I've done this with new drives, via the WD Utility that came with the drive, but the older drive doesn't have such a utility.  The WD site only has a protocol for PCs.
I find nothing on the Apple site itself.  Can you community members help??
(I've tried various ways of deleting the Time Machine backups, but nothing has worked.  The instructions for that, which I read on a community support site, were too advanced for me to understand.  A Mac IT guy tried to erase the backups, but he didn't know how either.  So that is why I'm erasing the drive totally.  I've learned my lesson and have a dedicated Time Machine drive now.)

    Please be clear:
This is a mirrored RAID that you use as the startup disk?
You now have a different startup disk and wish to erase the RAID mirror?
Do you wish to continue using the RAID for backup?
If all you want to do is erase the RAID to get rid or the Time Machine backups, the use Disk Utility to erase the mirror disk mounted on the Desktop.
