Adware in Safari, No VSearch Folder

After a few years of owning my Air, I suddenly have Adware/Malware in Safari and can't seem to get rid of it. I don't know why. A bunch of words are highlighted in blue and every single time I click on anything (not the highlighted words, obviously. Just my regular stuff) a new tab opens with spam. I've read other forums on this site and they suggest searching finder for VSearch folders/files. Mine has none. Can anyone help me figure out what is going on?
I don't often download applications to my computer and I'm super skeptical of anti-virus software downloads, so I don't know what to do or what services to trust.
Advice is appreciated.

  • Why is the contents of Safari's downloads folder different than the actual folder?

Why is the contents of Safari's downloads folder different than the actual folder that resides in my users folder?

Problem is if I delete that .plist I'll delete those downloads.  I'm still able to launch those downloads from that location so that tells that file is probably not corrupted. I need to be able to located that folder and transfer the downloads from it before I do anything like this.  So that begs the question, where is that folder located?  When I do a folder search I'm taken to a Downloads folder, but it's not the one that is showing up from within Safari as it's contents are too different.

  • Automatically changing Safari's downloads folder

I want to have a automator script which can automatically change Safari's downloads folder. How should i do?

If you don't mind using GUI Scripting, and provided Safari is already open, the following script should do the trick:
    set downloadsPath to "/POSIX/path/of/destination/folder"
    tell application "Safari" to activate
tell application "System Events" to tell process "Safari"
click menu item "Preferences…" of menu 1 of menu bar item "Safari" of menu bar 1
click button "General" of toolbar 1 of window 1
        tell window "General"
click pop up button 5 of group 1 of group 1 -- "Save downloaded files to:"
key code 125 -- down arrow
            keystroke return -- "Other…"
            keystroke downloadsPath & return
            delay 1
            tell sheet 1
if exists static text "The folder can’t be found." of sheet 1 then
display dialog "This folder can't be found:" & return & downloadsPath buttons {"OK"} default button 1 with icon 1 giving up after 10
click button "Cancel" of sheet 1
                    click button "Cancel"
                else
                    click button "Select"
                end if
            end tell
click button 1 -- close the window
        end tell
    end tell

  • Need help removing adware from Safari Version 7.0.5 (9537.77.4) Maverick System OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)

This adware renders system useless during while using web. Cannot perform even the simplest work that requires interaction on a website. (Except Apple). I have excellent Web Service. Other iMac and 4 IOS devices are not affected, and work well.

    Hello Apple community
    PLEASE I need your help!
I'm having an horrible experience with my Safari 7.1.2 ( iMac OS X 10.9.5)
Bare with me, here are my symptoms, and what I did so far looking for solutions online. None of them helped
This all started SUDDENLY, today. Although i DOWNLOADED a couple of apps last week  thinking i was upgrading my video app that wasn't working (I was prompted to do so but the video never ended up working!)
    My symptoms:
    - Ads are "glueing" themselves on my webpages... in different formats depending on the website i'm on (regular websites...)
    - pages are opening ups by themselves (see picture) :
    *directing to "d2bzz.resolve.sweepstakesghost.biz/?sov....." with a window saying "PC TECH SUPPORT Chat initiated. Specialist: Matt Folson Date: January 7, 2015";
To this i turned my Wifi off and then closed the page to avoid clicking on the OK button (yet now it's not asking anymore and just redirecting me without asking)
*directing to other supposedly technical support...
    - SELECTED WORDS become all caps, underlined, and in light blue with a link to an ad? (see picture above)
    - ALL of this are displaying a certain "Ad by PJS-4.2"
    My Solutions:
    1)
    I searched online and DOWNLOADED
-Clamsav: found items to remove and removed them and emptied my trash ---> Dindt work (see picture)
    - ADWARE Medic: found a couple of other items to delete and deleted them , emptied trash and restated computer ----> didn't work!
    Still same Symptoms!
    2)
I checked my extensions for Safari and only found 3 that I do use (and been using for quite a while). Just uninstalled them
    Still same symptoms!
    3)
I also looked for your files “Linc Davis” is referring to here in the forum but can't find any of them in my COMPUTER.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "VSearch" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator LOGIN password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/Jack.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then DELETE the following items in the same way:
    /Library/Application Support/VSearch
    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/Jack
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
    4)
I did an other search recommended by “Linc Davis”, about looking for     /Library/LaunchDaemons        in the Finder and I FOUND this:
    com.smithmicro.schedulerdaemon.plist
    com.MICROSOFT.office.licensing.helper.plist
    com.surteesstudios.hddfancontroldaemon.plist
    com.adobe.fpsaud.plist
    com.macpaw.CleanMyMac2.Agent.plist
    com.apple.aelwriter.plist
    com.adobe.SwitchBoard.plist
    com.apple.qmaster.qmasterd.plist
    com.adobe.versioncueCS3.plist
    com.bombich.ccc.plist
PLEASE PLEASE HELP what can I do to GET RID OF those?!!

  • Adware on Safari

I have got MacKeeper adware and other junk on Safari. My Flash player won't work either. Can I uninstall Safari and reinstall it or is there an easier way to fix this?

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem. You may have installed a variant of the "VSearch" ad-injection malware.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. This procedure works as of now, as far as I know. It may not work in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for a more recent discussion, or start a new one.
The VSearch malware tries to hide itself by varying the names of the files it installs. To remove it, you must first identify the naming pattern.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder named "LaunchDaemons" may open. Look inside it for two files with names of the form
              com.something.daemon.plist
    and
               com.something.helper.plist
Here something is a variable word, which can be different in each case. So far it has always been a string of letters without punctuation, such as "cloud," "dot," "highway," "submarine," or "trusteddownloads." Sometimes the word is "apple," and then you must be especially careful not to delete the wrong files, because many built-in OS X files have similar names.
If you find these files, leave the LaunchDaemons folder open, and open the following folder in the same way:
    /Library/LaunchAgents
In this folder, there may be a file named
              com.something.agent.plist
where the word something is the same as before.
If you feel confident that you've identified the above files, back up all data, then drag just those three files—nothing else—to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Close the Finder windows and restart the computer.
Don't delete the "LaunchAgents" or "LaunchDaemons" folder or anything else inside either one.
The malware is now permanently inactivated, as long as you never reinstall it. You can stop here if you like, or you can remove two remaining components for the sake of completeness.
    Open this folder:
    /Library/Application Support
If it has a subfolder named just
               something
where something is the same word you saw before, drag that subfolder to the Trash and close the window.
Don't delete the "Application Support" folder or anything else inside it.
    Finally, in this folder:
    /System/Library/Frameworks
there may an item named exactly
                v.framework
It's actually a folder, though it has a different icon than usual. This item always has the above name. Drag it to the Trash and close the window.
Don't delete the "Frameworks" folder or anything else inside it.
If you didn't find the files or you're not sure about the identification, post what you found.
If in doubt, or if you have no backups, change nothing at all.
The trouble may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Then, still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

  • HT4650 how do you get rid of adware in safari that creates hyperlinks to product websites?

I use thepiratebay.se and utorrent and I'm afraid somehow I've let adware screw up my safari broswer. I have a website www.lucidocopper.com and I have noticed several words are now hyperlinked to 3rd party's product websites. Now I'm afraid it's affecting the uploading of pictures to my website. I have not downloaded anything and I'm not sure what to do. I'd deleted all unknowns from application folder and all wondershare files from my finder. Are there any anti adware or anti virus software for mac to install to protect me in the future and ferret out the issue?
    Cheers!

From the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ Extensions
If any extensions are installed, disable them and test.

  • Saving images from Safari to a folder of your own choosing....

... Other than desktop or another preset.
It's just that I'm more familiar with the Firefox/IE system on windows, i.e., you right-click, choose 'save as', pic your folder, etc... It's handy when you're grabbing a lot of different images with different destination folders in mind, and most of for sequential purposes... being able to give it a file-name, such as A01, A02 etc etc etc
Now, I don't seem to be able to do this on Safari, but surely there must be a way? Obviously, I know I can go to preferences>general>save downloa files to , but this is cumbersome when I want to save to one location for one file, another for the next, and most of, it doesn't allow me to name the files- I just have to go with whatever they happen to be called.
Is there any way around this? I'm at the point where I switch over to XP for this sort of activity, which is far from ideal.

    You're welcome.
Interestingly, Apple once had the behavior of that menu item reversed. That is, Control-clicking gave you the "Save Image As..." option, while holding down the Option key changed the menu item to "Save Image to the Desktop." They changed the behavior many versions of Safari ago, to some people's consternation. In Apple's defense, I think they were trying to make things easier and simpler for the less-experienced computer user, who might have trouble navigating the Save dialog box or figuring out where they had just downloaded a file.

  • Safari Forgets Download Folder

I have created a Safari downloads folder with a folder action script to automaticaly open certain files on download. The problem is Safari keeps forgetting the folder I set in Preferences and reverting to the Desktop for downloads. I have erased the preference files both in user and general with no effect. OS 10.4.4, nothing particularly weird running except Default Folder and Font Reserve. Thanks

Why create a folder with an action script? Maybe that's the cause of your problem. Just create one in your finder, put it where ever you want it and set it in your Safari prefs as the default dl-folder and then activate in the same window 'open safe files after downloading', or something like it, cause I'm using the dutch version of Safari. This never gave me any problems.

  • How to obtain Safari Icon (Favicons) folder?

After installing OS 10.4.11 (and Safari 3.0.4) update, the Icon folder (Home/Library/Safari/Icon) is now an alias. Neither SafariSpeed nor manual trashing of the alias Icon f deletes the Favicons. Both my backups were updated before I realized the problem. I reinstalled the 10.4.11 combo update but still have an alias Icon f. The accumulating Favicons is frustrating. How does one obtain an Icon folder?

    Hi,
As of Safari 3, web page icons are now stored in:
    /Users/YourUsername/Library/Safari/WebpageIcons.db

  • Safari problem - lock folder

My brother in law has a Safari problem with his MacBook. When launching Safari in the main account, it will lauch, open a window and quickly crash. After it crashed, a folder named "Lock" is created in the Users>(Main account)>Library>Safari folder. We tried deleted this folder and relaunching Safari, but Safari crashed upon launch and this lock folder is recreated. Safari works just fine in the other account, so it is definitely something unique to the main user file. Here a copy of the crash log, if that helps:

  • Safari 5 - Download folder

When I was using Safari 4 and I decided to download a piece of software, Safari allowed me to choose which folder I wished to save that particular file to. Since installing Safari 5 the download goes immediately to the \users\%%name\Downloads folder causing me to move the file to where I want it to be after the download is finished.
The Options menu only allows me to select a folder different from the Downloads folder. Have I missed a setting somewhere or is the download process limited in Safari 5?

I have the same concern. I want to choose what to do, I don't want the dumb computer to do it for me.
It is a logical thing to improve or add features to an update and not to hide or eliminate them.
I will go back to ver. 4

  • Adware in Safari Extension "Print Plus" by Slice Factory

I installed this extension called "Print Plus" from apple.com Safari extension page and noticed that when I was browsing amazon.com, I started getting popups for something called "Best Price" - which showed a balloon window with a link to another site.
At first I wasn't sure where this was coming from, but ended up at a page on a "Slice Factory" website that showed the best price discount finder extension and noticed that Print Plus was listed as another of their extensions. So I uninstalled the "Print Plus" extension and the ads went away.
This was easily reproducible by me - install the "Print Plus" extension, go to amazon.com and look at the Apple Battery Charger - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003XIJ566 - and you should get a pop up with an ad for another site. Uninstalled the extension and the popup ad went away.
So my advice is avoid all extensions by "Slice Factory".

Have never had Price Blink installed (or any extension of that ilk), only Print Plus, and it was never actually used. As I mentioned before the Print Plus localstorage file seems to contain the answers. The reason I got immediate results on the one machine and delayed results on the other has to do with the fact that uninstalling the Print Plus extension does not delete the file in ~Library/Safari/LocalStorage.
*At this point, I can pretty much guarantee that if you install Print Plus 1.0.2.0 eventually you will begin to see the adware balloons* (I mentioned the Apple Battery Charger at amazon.com before, but started getting it on other items (also at amazon.com) when testing it on another machine) - *took about an hour or so* (plus a reboot, but don't know if that matters) *for the balloons to start showing up on a second machine after I installed Print Plus on that, yesterday.*
I've ended up deleting all Slice Factory extensions (I was using a Dictionary extension on another computer, it didn't exhibit the behavior, but just don't want to chance it. Also deleted their files from ~Library/Safari/LocalStorage/ as well.
The posts on macrumors.com that I linked to above claim that they notified Apple about this at the beginning of the month (the posts were around the 7th and 8th of March) - I notified them yesterday about this as well (through the "we don't respond to every request...." page.
I'm not computer illiterate, PriceBlink was never installed by me. Just for laughs, install Print Plus, leave it in for a few hours and see if you don't get the balloons also.

  • Removing adware from Safari

Yesterday, I clicked on a certain pic on FB and started getting all sorts of adware popups all over my screen when I'm on Safari.  Is there a way to remove them or must I get my computer serviced?

Check the links below for options to remove the Adware.
    The Easy, safe, effective method:
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/index.php
If you are comfortable doing manual file removals use the somewhat more difficult method:

Also read the articles below to be more prepared for the next time there is an issue on your computer.

  • Did someone make Adware for Safari!!? Getting pop-ups!!

I have two websites that I have set to open all the time. MacRumors and my local TV station. All of a sudden I've been getting the same kind of pop-ups on both sites. I emailed each and they said that there shouldn't be any pop-ups. I don't block pop-ups because I need them for Fed-Ex shipping. I started going to some other sites that I frequent and I'm still getting these random pop-ups that I never got before. I think I have some app in my mac that's doing this. Anyone know how to figure it out?

I never got a chance to test changing the DNS Servers because the pop-ups suddenly stopped. But I noticed a big slow down in my web surfing. Pages loading really slow so I started researching and actually changed my DNS Servers to openDNS (your suggestion) I actually changed my router first and then I saw those same openDNS numbers come up in my computer so I thought all was well. I tried surfing and it was still slow so I went back into network prefs and the servers back to 85.255.115.27 and 85.255.112.217!! I'm just leaning about this stuff so I don't know if that's normal. Anyway I hit the plus button and add the OpenDNS numbers to the list. The 85.255.112.217 were greyed out so I couldn't hit the minus button and remove them. I found that interesting because the OpenDNS site says to write down and delete the old numbers.
By accident I noticed that I have this message showing up every minute in my Console Messages log:
com.apple.launchd[1] (0x10bfb0.cron5126): Could not setup Mach task special port 9: (os/kern) no access
So I started looking into that and found this in a forum:
"I did a bit of research, and there don't appear to be any figuring out exactly WHY cron is generating an error for launchd, but it does appear to match each time a cron job is run. On my system it was happening every minute.
However, the reason cron was running every minute, was to run the following script:
    * * * * \"/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/QuickTime.xpt\">/dev/null 2>&1
The '* * * * *' says to run every minute, and the script is a trojan, which may or may not affect your internet connection. It attempts to redirect your DNS (domain name service) to a pair of servers in eastern europe.
If you have this entry in your crontab, or particularly in your root crontab, delete the script, and another script in the same directory 'plugins.settings', then delete the crontab entry. If you want more info, do a google search on 'QuickTime.xpt' and you've find more than you ever wanted to know.
To check for the crontab entry, use 'sudo crontab -l' (that's a lowercase "L") from a terminal, and if the entry is there, and nothing else, just delete the crontab file via 'sudo crontab -r' and if there are other lines you wish to keep, use 'sudo crontab -e' to edit the crontab file. Knowledge of 'vi' or 'emacs' may be required to edit the file. If you don't know what any of this means, please ask for help from a local Mac expert, a unix expert, or your local Apple Store's Genius Bar.
Hope this helps someone. I'm glad I took the time to sort this out."
So now I'm wondering if I have a trojan or if those DNS numbers were from embarq?
