Adware on my MacBook Air?

Hi y'all!
I accidentally downloaded 'mplayerx' onto my MacBook Air and now whenever I use Google there are a ton of ads! Also, lots of times when I go to open a link, another ad website will pop-up. I'm a relatively new Apple user, so I was pretty sure I removed all traces of 'mplayerx' (it doesn't show up in my finder anymore) but I'm still getting all of these ads? Does anyone know how to completely rid my computer of mplayerx and all of the ads? Any and all suggestions welcome! Thanks so much!
Regards,
Anna

Click here and follow the instructions, or if desired, download and run Adware Medic. The second link is a direct download; if you're unable to download it, see this page.
MPlayerX itself is legitimate, but if obtained from a source other than the Mac App Store or the developer's site, may have adware packaged with it.

  • Adware virus on macbook air?

I wanted to watch movies online and it said I needed to download something in order to watch them, but when I did my computer froze so I just shut it off and now it says that I may have the Adware virus. HELP???

    You're being scammed.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Problems
If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide and AdwareMedic.
Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
    Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
    Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.

From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect everything targeting the Mac.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.

  • My Macbook air is running slow and adware pop up eveytime I search for somthing online. Help!

For the past week my Macbook air has been running slow and the are ads that pop up with everything I search for through firefox. I even try and open netflix on my laptop and an adware pop up comes up with it. There are many different pop ups but the one that follows is the one that pops up most. One day it is Mac OS browser warning the next day it is windows browser warning. Do I call the number on the pop up, it says I have a virus or is it a scam? help me, I don't know what to do.

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem. You may have installed a variant of the "VSearch" ad-injection malware.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. This procedure works as of now, as far as I know. It may not work in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for a more recent discussion, or start a new one.
The VSearch malware tries to hide itself by varying the names of the files it installs. To remove it, you must first identify the naming pattern.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder named "LaunchDaemons" may open. Look inside it for two files with names of the form
              com.something.daemon.plist
    and
               com.something.helper.plist
Here something is a variable string of characters, which can be different in each case. So far it has always been a string of letters without punctuation, such as "cloud," "dot," "highway," "submarine," or "trusteddownloads." Sometimes it's a meaningless string such as "e8dec5ae7fc75c28" rather than a word. Sometimes the string is "apple," and then you must be especially careful not to delete the wrong files, because many built-in OS X files have similar names.
If you find these files, leave the LaunchDaemons folder open, and open the following folder in the same way:
    /Library/LaunchAgents
In this folder, there may be a file named
              com.something.agent.plist
where the string something is the same as before.
If you feel confident that you've identified the above files, back up all data, then drag just those three files—nothing else—to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Close the Finder windows and restart the computer.
Don't delete the "LaunchAgents" or "LaunchDaemons" folder or anything else inside either one.
The malware is now permanently inactivated, as long as you never reinstall it. You can stop here if you like, or you can remove two remaining components for the sake of completeness.
    Open this folder:
    /Library/Application Support
If it has a subfolder named just
               something
where something is the same string you saw before, drag that subfolder to the Trash and close the window.
Don't delete the "Application Support" folder or anything else inside it.
    Finally, in this folder:
    /System/Library/Frameworks
there may an item named exactly
                v.framework
It's actually a folder, though it has a different icon than usual. This item always has the above name; it doesn't vary. Drag it to the Trash and close the window.
Don't delete the "Frameworks" folder or anything else inside it.
If you didn't find the files or you're not sure about the identification, post what you found.
If in doubt, or if you have no backups, change nothing at all.
The trouble may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Then, still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

  • Possible adware or virus on Macbook Air

My macbook air (purchased late 2013) runs extremely slow, the fan runs at a high rate, and a popup window opens for a computer cleaning site when I turn on my laptop.  I assume this means some kind of adware or maybe a virus?  What should I do?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be a series of messages in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
    [Process completed]
The messages won't be spaced equally apart in time, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it. Then go to the next step.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Macbook Air running extremely slow - kernel_task at 300% cpu usage

I purchased my Macbook Air roughly 15 months ago and it's performance has constantly been impressive since I purchased it - until roughly a fortnight ago. I came home from work one afternoon and it was running at a snails pace. I had recently upgraded to Yosemite though I'm unsure if this had anything to do with it. I had also recently installed FitBit software to sync to my new FitBit flex.
It has continued to run in this manner constantly since the problem began. It is ridiculously slow, every single request takes a very long time to respond. Logging in takes forever. When I click on an app to open it, the icon bounces for 30 seconds or more, and it's not a smooth bounce either, it's quite a jagged bounce!
I'm hoping someone is able to provide some advice, guidance or help. The laptop is no longer covered by the 12 month Manufacturer Warranty, and I did not purchase an Apple Care plan as no Apple product I've owned before has experienced issues like this.
This whole experience is killing me! I'm suspecting hardware failure and I'm just so sad that this could happen to the laptop I've loved so much since I bought it!
    The problem:
The kernel_task process is constantly running at 300% or higher cpu usage, with Activity Monitor indicating the processor is being maxed out by a system task. Also, the laptop's fan is constantly running at full capacity - from the moment the laptop turns on, or wakes up.
What I think the problem might be:
As a result of many, many Google searches, it appears that this behaviour may be due to the Macbook Air thinking it is overheating - and I will clarify here that it certainly is not. It is cool to touch, always, when this problem occurs. (yet the fan is almost taking off!). As a result of the MacBook Air thinking it's overheating, it not only is running the fan at a very high RPM (confirmed with iStat), but it also is intentionally choking the system with 'simple requests' in attempt to cool the computer down. Apparently this is a built-in feature of OS X. The kernel has priority over user tasks, causing all user tasks to be granted a lower priority, causing the computer to run INCREDIBLY SLOW. Even as I'm typing this, I'm about two sentences ahead of what is showing on the screen!
    Steps I have taken:
    - Read widely across the internet with every possible relevant search term I can think of
    - Downloaded iStat to see if any of the temperatures are too high (they all seemed fine..)
    - Disabled Bluetooth and Wifi. (no change)
    - Reset SMC (multiple times.., no change)
    - Reset PRAM (multiple times.., no change)
    - Drained the battery completely (2 or 3 times, no change)
    - Install Windows 7 on BootCamp in attempt to bypass the issue (CPU usage was 100% constantly in Windows also)
    - Uninstalled FitBit software (no change..)
    - Uninstalled other software I did not need (no change..)
    - Attempt to boot into Safe Mode / Recovery Mode (even in this modes, the same thing is happening)
    - Repaired Disk Permissions
    - Backed up all personal data
    - Used the built-in Internet Recovery mode to format my Macintosh HD and re-install a fresh copy of OS X (Mountain Lion). (no change…)
    - Re-upgrade to Yosemite (no change..)
I've downloaded EtreCheck and here is the output:
    Problem description:
OS X is running incredibly slow. kernel_task process is constantly using 300% and upward CPU usage.

    Hi,
I have an update so I thought I would share in case any other users are experiencing a similar problem.
I made an appointment with the Genius Bar at the Apple Store.
I went in and they ran a thorough diagnostic check on my Macbook Air and determined that the sensors were indeed faulty - several were providing no information "No reading" instead of providing a temperature. Thus, the Air was unaware of the temperature across multiple components.
Despite the laptop being outside the 12 Month Manufacturer Warranty, the Apple Store determined that it was covered under warranty through Australian Consumer Law - the laptop is now in for a complete repair under warranty at no cost to myself.
    I couldn't be happier.

      Dec 20, 2014, 02:15:38 PM Self test - passed

    Hi,
I have an update so I thought I would share in case any other users are experiencing a similar problem.

  • Yosemite made my macbook air slow. Please help.

Hello, my computer has been almost unusable for the past few weeks, I'm quite sure since I installed Yosemite. I read on another thread that I should run EtreCheck and start my own discussion. Here are the results, please help
    Problem description:
I installed Yosemite and now my  computer is crawling, the fan goes on for long periods and gets overheated. My hard drive was full but I migrated many of my files to dropbox and made sure to only selective sync files that were necessary on a regular basis.

  • Macbook air freezes with spinning wheel

So, my Macbook Air has suddenly started to freeze and leave me with the dreaded spinning wheel of death. Sometimes I get 10mins into a session, and sometimes the freezing will occur as soon as I log in. I have tried to log in in safe mode, but I also get the SWOD here as well! My details are as follows:
    Problem description:

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

When I say the freezing happened suddenly, I can recount to a few occasions over the past couple of weeks where I have been watching netflix and around halfway through the program I was watching, I'd get the SPWOD and need to do a hard reboot. The major issues started this morning which I can't link to the installation or update of any programs. I have managed to update to Yosemite today - however that hasn't fixed the problem. In saying this though, the system has been stable for around the last hour, but I've only opened Safari and no other programs.

  • My MacBook Air is running very slowly and has difficulty staying connected to wifi networks.

  • Yosemite slowing down macbook air performance

Ever since upgrading to yosemite, my 2011 macbook air 11' has been very noticeably sluggish compared to how it was with mavericks. At first i thought it might be from some conflicts from the previous OS, so I did a completely fresh install with yosemite, but it's still dragging and sluggish, especially with any kind of graphics intensive process. I know the air isn't supposed to be a marvel at graphics performance, but I never had these performance issues with mavericks.
Is yosemite just too resource heavy for my macbook air? I wonder if I'd just be better off going back to mavericks. However, if there's some kind of settings I need to adjust, I'd be happy to experiment. I've already tried the 'reduce transparency' trick, but it didn't do much (not that I noticed anyways).

Gatekeeper is described here: OS X: About Gatekeeper  - Apple Support. It is only one defense to protect you from inadvertently installing malware, and an effective defense does not rely upon only one method.
... I can use software that isn't officially "identified" by apple, even though it is trusted.
Apple's philosophy is such that a Mac user with Admin privileges always has control over what he or she installs. As I wrote Gatekeeper will serve to protect you against inadvertently installing malware, including the adware that is affecting your Mac. Adware does not get installed on its own - it requires your explicit permission, which you provided by supplying your Admin name and password. When that dialog appears, it should be expected, not a surprise, and its implications should be clearly understood. By providing your credentials OS X concludes you know what you're doing and the reason you're doing it. Determining the "trusted" aspect of software thereby falls to you.
In your case, by choosing the "anywhere" option you effectively circumvented this basic OS X security feature.
The problem with adware is that it relies upon deception to convince you that it's legitimate software offered for some beneficial purpose, when in fact all it will do is interfere with your normal activity and possibly crash your Mac.
Is there anything I can do to possibly identify which apps may be slowing my system down?
Yes, although you installed quite a number of them. For troubleshooting, read below the line that follows the end of this post.
An EtreCheck report generated on a Mac as it ships from Apple will show no entries under Kernel Extensions, Launch Agents, User Launch Agents, Safari Extensions, 3rd Party Preference Panes, etc. Everything that appears under those headings is there because you installed them. As I wrote it's a user's responsibility to understand the specific benefits they are intended to convey, the effects they will have, and the means of uninstalling them should they result in unacceptable performance - which was your original complaint.
It's also possible that the slowdowns are not caused by software, but given the extent to which your system has been modified, hardware failure is less likely than incompatible or poorly implemented software.
... anything that isn't officially "identified" by apple is adware?
Although OS X incorporates specific prohibitions against installing common malware, they can hardly attempt to classify specific user-installed modifications as adware. The only certain way to do that would be to prevent user-installed system modifications altogether, in the same manner as they do with iOS (iPads and iPhones).
Adware's appearance changes approximately every day. Their pathetic developers are desperate to change its appearance in an effort to continue their deceptive tactics, and a simple change of a file name precludes a reliable automated means of intercepting it. That's the reason it's incumbent upon Mac users to educate themselves about its appearance so that they are not so easily gulled into installing some junk. Gatekeeper merely helps you understand that's what you'd be doing.
Back up your Mac if  you have not already done so. To learn how to to that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.
If your Mac is momentarily unresponsive, consider the following.
Launch the Console app - it is in your Utilities folder. You can find it by selecting Utilities from the Finder's Go menu.
If the log list column on the left is not already displayed, show the log list by selecting Show Log List from Console's View menu. Select Show Toolbar if it is not already shown.
Locate system.log in the list and select it. Many date and time-stamped entries will appear, hundreds of them, and you must find the entries relevant to your Mac's problem.
To do that click the Clear Display button in the Toolbar. All previously displayed log entries will be disappear.
Next: Perform whatever actions cause the Mac to exhibit the slow behavior. If the problem is caused by errors logged by the system, the Console window will show them being recorded in system.log.
One or more of them, along with their time stamps, may reveal the reason for the problem you describe.
Copy and paste those log entries in a reply. If hundreds of the same repetitive messages appear, please edit them before posting. There should be no need for more than a few log entries.
Most of the entries will be cryptic but will contain information you might consider personal such as your Mac's name. If you do not want that information to appear, delete or obscure it when posting your reply. Leave enough information so that the entries can be deciphered.

  • My macbook air keeps getting adds on every website

I have a 2014 macbook air and every time I go onto a website on safari an add pops up in another window when I click on a link on the website(the links I click on are not adds). I close out of the adds multiple times and they still keep popping up. Most of the adds are for cleaning your macbook. And I don't click on the adds ever I always close them out but they always come back. It's gotten to the point where I can't navigate on a website because the adds are blocking the links.

An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.

If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using ClamXAV. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for this recommendation.)

  • Macbook Air Safari (Mac OS X 10.6.8) won't connect to Google, Yahoo, or Facebook but yet allows other websites to connect.  Help!

My daughter's Macbook Air Safari (using Mac OS X 10.6.8) won't allow her to connect to Google, Yahoo and Facebook.  It will for some reason allow for Bing searches and connections to specific other websites.  The wifi seems to be connected fine.  We have done the "reset Safari" excercise and updated for the most recent software updates.  Also did the good old shut down and restart but no go.  Does anyone have any other suggestions or seen this problem before?
    Thanks!

There may be a redirect issue if an adware software has been
installed by accident or by intent; usually if someone goes to a
web site where questionable downloads of software are free,
there may be (included, added to) the packet you get, adware
    or perhaps even malware.
So, if this is the case, the symptoms you say are part of this
experience may be related to an adware or other badware
running in the background. A 'cleanmymac' or 'mackeeper'
can also mess up a Mac computer, & they are not advised.
Several posts to the ASC discussions are about these kinds
of things and many point back to a user going to some web
site and downloading something. A click can do it.
A way to help find some evidence of certain kinds of add-ons
(outside of looking into the Browser's add-ons and see about
deleting those that relate to odd behavior, or badware) such
as adware, one could get and use this free utility & get a
report of general system info, and then post it online to see
if someone can spot some of the characteristics adware or
other malware may have included in the system.
There is another way to get a more lengthy report than etrecheck
as Linc Davis has posted, that uses more detailed effort on the
part of the user, in order to get a larger fuller report.
This is the short and easy way to look for a few clues that may
be addressed through using advice in TheSafeMac guide.
    •EtreCheck: (also click on read-more)

The report from the above may be helpful along with info in the
site below. Note there are other guides in TheSafeMac, too.
    •Adware Removal Guide:

Hopefully the issue with the browser can be resolved in one
of up to three/four different ways, depending on what it is.
PS: recent updates to some OS X versions, etc do not
include update to Snow Leopard; only later systems.
    {by the time I write all this, you may already have a reply}
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Safari cannot open the page because the server is not responding, MacBook Air (late 2013) 1.7 GHz

I'm no longer able to listen to a specific radio station on my 13" MacBook Air (mid-2013) via Safari.  I've been listening to this specific radio station using Safari every day for a long time, but for some reason, now, when I click on the appropriate button to listen to the radio, when the new window pops-up, the error message appears that says, "Safari can't open the page because the server where this page is located isn't responding."
Please note that yesterday, I cleared the history and website data, as I had to clean out adware off of my computer (per Mackeeper, which I'm no longer using of course, and per Safari's new thesmartsearch.net that was overriding my search preference of google).  To clean out the adware, I used AdwareMedic.
Any ideas?  Thank you in advance for any help.
    13" MacBook Air (mid-2013), 1.7GHz dual-core Intel i7, 512GB flash storage; 4MB L3 Cache; 8GB of onboard storage 1600Mhz DDR3

Thanks for the update. You might also consider using iTunes and Internet Radio:
Not all radio stations are available though, since they want you to see advertisements in addition to listening to them
