Ae 13.1 graph editor unusable!

My graph editor has become completely useless. Can't grab any of the points and when I some how manage to they just snap into place with absolutely no control. Plus when I try to do a mass selection it's not even corresponding to where my cursor is.
Anyone else getting this issue?
Here is a video of what's happening:

This Graph Editor bug is fixed in the After Effects 2014.1.1 (13.1.1) update:

  • Un-editable curves in graph editor?

    Are the curves in the graph editor not supposed to be standard Beziers with standard editing techniques? I'm very good at controling Bezier curves in any application (including the pen tool in AE), but adjustment handles in the graph editor don't seem to follow the same rules.
    For example: if the starting control point is set to ease out, it has an adjustment handle to the right, which I can move horizontally only. There isn't any way of dragging the adjustment handle at an angle, to change the shape of the curve controlled by the point. If I click the control point with the convert pen tool (including Alt + clicking) the curve changes to a straight line. Alt + clicking the curve again doesn't change it to a draggable curve point. It also doesn't seem possible to drag a control point or adjustment handle with the convert pen tool, which is how I'd normally get a second adjustment handle or change a line into a curve.
    Creating points with the add pen tool also doesn't create control points that behave normally. The documentation makes no mention of any of this, and describes the curves as standard, editable Bezier paths. Everything else in AE CS4 seems to be working normally.
    Anyone have an idea?

    As Mylenium cleartly explained, the graph editor can display a value graph or a speed graph for any chosen property. By default the Graph Editor is set to auto-select which kind of graph to show for each property. In other words, it will pick the one that arguably it's the most useful in most cases. Since one could consider a motion path -the vector path you get in the Comp panel to represent position- as the most natural way of displaying position property values, the Graph Editor defaults to showing speed when you select position.
    Now, having control over speed is a great thing. But many people are confused because these handles don't rotate like normal bèzier handles do. Don't worry: they do not rotate, simply because as far as speed goes, rotating the handles doesn't mean anything.
    More info on this in AE Community help's section Controlling speed between keyframes.
    Another head-scrather is that the traditional value graph for position is limited in that you can't use normal bèzier handles in it because the XYZ values are tied together. New in CS4m you now have the ability so separate dimensions, ie get separate properties for position x, position y and position z. When you do that, you get the same vector controls in the Graph Editor.
    Take a look at Separate dimensions of Position to animate components individually in After Effects Community Help.

  • Graph Editor bug

    Hello there, I'm having some problems with the graph editor on After Effects CC 2014. It shows like in the images below, almost as if the software couldn't process the graph, and it slowly starts to get more curved. Also I can't edit or even barely see the anchors, and it shows the curves for all the animated parameters, even though the option "Show selected properties" is enabled. It happened twice so far, and is related to specific comps, I checked on other comps in the same project and they were working just fine. My only guess so far is that it happened in comps where I am using that new script/preset called Ouroboros, but I'm not sure it's related to that, since the bug appeared on other layers without that effect. Any one has any clue or had this problem before?

    Yes, expression evaluation can cause these behaviors and the script uses them extensively. Nothing wrong in that regard. The rest is unclear because you made your screenshots useless by clipping out the important info like the property names. Also full system info,exact graph editor options and all that will be required.

  • Anchor point in the Graph Editor and where are the Tips

    Hello All,
    What is the purpose of an anchor point in the Graph Editor when you have "Show Transform Box when multiple keyframes are Selected" engaged.   The pointer automatically turns into a PanBehind tool.   I moved it inside, outside, on the line and it doesn't seem to have any inpact on the scaling of the transform box.  Not only that, it pops back to the center when you switch from "Edit Speed Graph" and "Edit Value Graph"
    I haven't used the graph editor much, if ever and was also curious to know what/where are the graph tool tips.  I haven't seen any difference when Show Graph Tool Tips is selected.
    Thanks in advance
    on a mac   cs5.5

    OK, I see the Tool Tips are displayed when you hover over a keyframe or the path that is made.

  • Graph editor showing 2 separate curves

    hi.
    suddenly my graph editeor began to show 2 separate dimensions for x and y, even though the Separte Dimensions button is turned off. How to i get back the single curve for x and y in graph editor?

    Click the "Select graph type" button (the one just after the eye on your image) and in the menu choose "Edit Speed Graph".
    You'll get the speed graph back (instead of value graph).

  • Can't pull the yellow handles in Graph Editor up and down

    I'm trying to fidn a solution for over an hour already.
    I can't pull the yellow handles in Graph Editor anywhere like I see it in all the Tutorials. I can only pull it left or right and make it longer or shorter. But when I try to pull it up, the entire point will go up as well.

    Thanks a lot for an answer Appreciate it.
    No but.. it doesn't work on any.. tried the value graph, speed graph.. or whatever.. I tried it all and none of them worked.... mhh..

  • After effects speed data in graph editor not coherent

    Hi, im animating the typical bouncing ball, and i have activated separate dimenstions to animate X,Y separate.  So i add two keys on the X value that has a constant speed, then i animate the Y value, but i notice that the speed goes below zero in the graph editor and i dont understand it..
    Should it not be Zero as the ball stops? (Green line)
    Here you have an image with my situation:

    You're making animating a bounce much too difficult. Way too much room for funky behavior.
    Set your layer at it's starting point, set a position keyframe, then move the layer to it's ending point but keep it at exactly the same height (y value). Now add this expression and adjust the Frequency, amplitude, and decay to get the path you want. The amplitude is the number of pixels you want the ball to fall.
    freq = 1.0; //oscillations per second
    amplitude =  90;
    decay =  .5;
    posCos = Math.abs(Math.cos(freq*time*2*Math.PI));
    y = amplitude*posCos/Math.exp(decay*time);
    position - [0,y]
    Your graph will then look like this:
    and you'll have a much more realistic bounce.
    Thank Dan Ebberts for the expression with a very slight modification by me. BTW, save this as an animation preset and you've always got it when you need it.

  • Struts Page Flow Editor Unusably Slow

    I find the Struts page flow editor unusably slow.
    Opening a diagram takes ~ 30 s
    Dropping something from the component palette takes 10s
    Just selecting something takes 1-2 seconds.
    Moving objects on the diagram takes so long it looks as if nothing is happening so you end up trying to move things twice.
    All the diagrammers are slow, but this one is appalling.

    I have plenty of RAM free

  • CS4: Graph Editor video Tutorials?

    Hi All,
    I've been looking for intermediate/advanced video tutorials for the Graph Editor in AE, particularly in how it applies to Time Remapping. There's a few things out there but they seem to be very basic, includng the stuff from Lynda.com. Mostly for use with Time Remapping, I want to learn the Graph Editor inside and out. Anyone know of any good sources? Thanks.

    Thank you for the useful link. The motion aspect of the Graph Editor is very straight forward, much like the graph editor in Lightwave.  It is when editing time remapping keyframes in the Graph Editor where things can be somewhat unpredictable or counterintuitive. For example: a 1 minute video clip. I may want to speed up and slow down different portions of the clip while leaving other portions unchanged.
    It took me a while to figure out what was going on with time remapping. In order for the net length of the video clip to remain the same, if you speed up a portion of the clip, then other portions of the clip must necessarily expand (slow down) so the overall length of the clip is the same. However this may be an unwanted byproduct.
    For instance, Let's say I have a video clip of exactly 30 seconds. I want to slow down the middle 10 seconds. So I set a time keyframe at 10 seconds (keyframe 1) and a time keyframe at 20 seconds (keyframe 2). I now move keyframe 1 back to the 5 second mark, and keyframe 2 forward to the 25 second mark. That portion of the video (between 5 and 25 seconds) now plays slowly as expect. However the first and last 5 seconds of the video are now playing quickly, because as we can see in the Graph Editor, the speed of the first and last 5 seconds have been moved up, or "squashed" to accomodate the slower, middle section of the time remapped video. I hope I'm being clear.
    The only way I've found to correct this is to first allot more overall time for the clip in Composition Settings, and then extend the tail (and/or the beginning) of the video clip. Then keyframe 1 must be selected with keyframe 0 (the first keyframe added by enabling Time Remapping) and moved back together, and keyframe 2 must be selected with last keyframe and moved together as well. As a result, the beginning and ending 5 seconds of the clip will now play at the proper, normal speed.
    The process can get more complex, though, when time remapping a much longer clip, where numerous time remapping transitions will be occurring. Is the only solution to split up the clip, do the time remapping on the now several existing layers, and then move everything around until it looks fluid?
    I may be missing something, but it seems to me that there should be some sort of "intelligent" feature added to Time Remapping that could recognize  unchanged portions of a clip, and expand the time settings of the project, etc. to automatically accomodate for this.

  • Graph editor

    After Effect's timeline curve editor, in 3D, SUCKS! It keeps getting worse every year. It can't even perform simple position tasks. The curve always projects pass the intended keyframe and there is no way of customizing it.
    Any one else have extreme frustrations with the pointless curve editor that is in After Effects. After Effects crew, you need to take a lesson from the Maya crew. Their curve editor is amazing. I can't get anything done with YOUR curve editor. Especially when I am working in 3D.

    Right-click on the position values and choose to Separate Dimensions.
    That should help somewhat.

  • Is it possible to scale values in the graph editor?

    Ive animated a layers position over about 150 frames with lots of keyframes but I wanted to 'amplify' the existing motion a little.
    It will take ages to tweak the individual keyframes so I wondered if there was a numeric way of selecting the keys and scaling their value by a percentage or similar.
    Im able to do this in my 3D app and wondered if AFX had a similar function. The 'Edit Value Graph' doesnt appear to allow for a numeric adjustment.
    Thanks

    In the case of (non-separated) position, the bounding box doesn't offer the same transform controls in the value graph as for other properties.
    You do get the transform box for position keyframes. when you separate dimensions.
    Note that even if you don't need to separate XYZ for position, you can do that briefly to use the transform box, and then join the dimensions back together.

  • Dent/dip in motion graph between keyframes

    I've noticed that ever since upgrading to AE7, I occasionally get this strange dip/dent in the line/curve between keyframes that I can't seem to get rid of.
    Commonly, it occurs like this:
    I set a keyframe at the first frame, then move the layer/item and set another keyframe at (say) frame 30. Everything's fine... Then I move to (say) frame 40, move the item, and set a keyframe. When I look at the graph, rather than the usual line going from one keyframe to the other, I have a kink/dent in the line going from keyframe 2 and 3, as if a keyframe of a different value was place in between the two keyframes.
    I've tried toggling linear/bezier interpolation, and even removed and redid each of the keyframes, yet nothing gets rid of the kink.
    Has anyone else experienced this, and does anyone know why this is happening? This has prevented me from finishing even simple animations, because there doesn't seem to be any way to fix it.
    I never had this problem with previous versions, so I'm really puzzled by what is causing this. Just 3 keyframes, and it does it... nothing else complex or unusual.

    I think what you're talking about is bounce or rebound. If you change the spatial interpolation from bezier or auto bezier to linear the bounce will go away. You can't change spatial interpolation directly in the timeline graph editor. You change it by going to Keyframe Interpolation by right clicking (or Control + click on a one button mouse mac) on your selected keyframes in the timeline window and picking Keyframe Interpolation or by using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl/Cmnd + Alt/Option + K, or by going to Animation>Keyframe Interpolation from the menu bar.
    While the graph editor will give you an indication of the position of the layer, you can only manipulate the time values in the Timeline Window. In the Composition window, you can only adjust the spatial (position, rotation) property. If you look closely at the keyframes in the Composition window before you change spatial interpolation, you'll see bezier handles on the path. They are really difficult to see on a straight path, but they are there. Changing Spatial Interpolation to linear will get rid of these handles, but you can also do it manually by holding down the G key while hovering close to the motion path and when the cursor changes to an open arrow you grab the path bezier handle and drag it to the keyframe.
    Hope this helps. It's a rather common problem that's easily solved once you realize that you're adjusting the when in the timeline and the where in the comp window.
