AE 2014: Effect Remains on Single Frame
Hey folks -
Summary: I've tried to remove an effect from a clip, but it seems to remain in one, single frame on that clip.
I've literally just started using AE on my new Mac Pro yesterday. "Neophyte" doesn't begin to describe me. :-) I have a chunk of a Pr timeline, consisting of 3 separate video clips opened in AE. The goal: add the "CC Scatter" effect to each of the 3 clips, to make them scatter into, and then out of existence. Someone suggested that I extend the effect on the third clip, so I went through and deleted all of the keyframes in that clip after the CC Scatter was reduced to 0.0. However, the effect remains on one frame. I've included a screen grab from AE, and highlighted the effect control showing that AE even thinks it should be 0.0. But the video is displaying partially scattered for some reason. You'll note an extra keyframe at the end of the clip; I put that there as an experiment, with the value set to 0.0, hoping it would force AE to remove the effect from that one frame. It didn't work.
My guess is that something's cached and needs to be nuked. If I save it and re-render it in Pr, that same scatter shows up in the exact frame. Is there something I can nuke or clear or some such to make that go away?
System: Mac Pro, 8-core, 64GB RAM, D700 GPUs
AE: CC 2014

I didn't initially see that in the Edit menu. Thanks much; that did the trick!

Mouse over HTML link causes single frame to display at top of page Netscape only
Having a wierd problem. When you run the mouse over HTML
links on the page a single frame of the flash movie apears at the
top center of the page. It only happens in netscape in firefox
mode. IE, Opera, and Firefox do not have the problem.

Thanks in Advance,
VorschThe problem goes away if i modify my .css file by removing
the
border: 1px solid #999999;
line from the "a:hover" style.
I ran my css file thru the validator at w3c and its fine. The
Page also validates as xhtml transitional.
and just a note the same file version is on my public server
and my testing server.
Has anyone ever seen this before?? I have several sites with
a:hover effects and flass media and have never run across this
before. -
Has anyone solved or worked around the After Effects CC red flash frame glitch?
I can't find any mention on any forums of the After Effects CC red flash frame glitch later than Feb. 2014. I just installed 12.2 (which was my first CC version) on my macpro and started getting the red flash frames randomly, but with increasing frequency, in my projects. I have never had this problem before on any previous computer or version for AE. The forums I've read have referenced ProRes source footage, outputs to ProRes, and lens blur. My project uses all of these things.
If there is a universally accepted solution/work around, I haven't seen it definitively. Do I not use ProRes source footage? Do I not render to ProRes 4444? Do I not use the lens blur effect? Do I give up and go back to CS6?Hi Keith,
I have the "same" issue with the red frames in AFX CC
I have seen them first, as I resized a prores4444 HD to a smaller format and saw the redframes in the preview window.
Setup in AFX: I created a comp from the HD Prores4444 footage and put this comp in a comp with resolution of 960x540.
The output format was again prores4444.
I shuttled through the clips in the small comp and I saw the red frames too.
When I switched to the HD comp at the same position everything was fine.
I "solved" the problem by flushing the cache, twice. Because after the first purge I was only able to render the first clip. The second one had the red frame problematic again.
Maybe It has something to do with hardware accelerated layers.
I'm using a MacPro running OSX 10.8.5 with a Nvidia GTX680.

Making a video with single frames
Hi,
I'd like to make a video with single frames.
One of my computergames is able to take 25 frames per second (or 30, 40 etc.). The game saves the frames in a folder. For one minute there are over 1000 frames.
Now I need to know, how I can tell After Effects that every 25 frames are one seconds.
I just want to make a movie of this game. This will be the easiest way if After Effects can handle with these single frames.
Is it possible? I will be very happy if some can explain me the way to realise my idea.
Sincerely,

Lots of weird Single-Frame offset errors lately
Hi Everyone,
I have been fighting some mighty germlins of late. At first, I though the issue was isolated, but it appears to be spreading - or at least not as isolated as I first thought.
The problems began when I was asked to employ the use of the CC Twister plugin on a project for use as a text transition. When I initially set it up, it worked great, but I found I needed to adjust the timing. When I dragged a keyframe to facilitate this, I found that the text would either not resolve where it should, instead animating up to the upper left corner (0,0) or if it didn't resolve there, it would simply pop up there for a single frame at some point during the transition. I found that changing ANYTHING would cause this... even if I kept the timing alone and disabled the layer's track matte; and I didn't have to undo, I could just put the property back like it was and it would work again. Obviously, I tried deleting the effect, and applying it anew - same results... I then tried cleaning all the cache files, applying the effect anew once more, and again... same results. There was no rhyme or reason to it... nothing that appeared to be driving the issue. In fact, at one point I could RAM preview the comp, and it looked correct, but the problem would pop up again when rendering... despite changing nothing in the comp. So, I simply had to presume that this effect had a bug of some sort, rendering it useless pending an update.
So then, last night, I had a similar issue during rendering with Trapcode Form. Whenever I would do quarter or half res previews, things were working as expected... then I'd do a full res export and some of the forms would jump wildly from one frame to the next... always for just one frame, but often several scattered individual frames would be effected. When I'd go back into the comp after the render, the errors were 'baked in' as though they has always been there... though they most definitely had not. In this case, the issue started when I enabled multi-processing (it was never on in the first example with CC Twister above). It occured to me that in THAT case, since one core might be rendering a frame two or three frames ahead of another core, and said core therefore perhaps didn't have the necessary data from the preceeding frame, the position would be incorrectly calulated. A similar phenomenon occurs in C4D with certain generators when rendering out of sequence, necessitating baking of the solution.... Whether or not this is the case, the fact that the error actually affected the comp post render is really unsettling. After turning off Multi-Processing, I was able to to export a clean full-res render without any issue. So, I thought it odd that I was having similar issues with entirely different circumstances at play, but again had to assume these were isolated and that THIS issue was simply a matter of the notoriously unstable AE multi-processing rearing once more its not ready for prime time head.
That brings me to today. I was asked by my client to give a little subtle movement to the text layers in my scene. I wanted to try a couple of things... a subtle wiggle on the text layer itself, or using the similar function from the plugin Sure Target, in case they wanted the movement to be on more elements than just the text, I could easily add new elements to the movement by making them 3D layers. So I made 2 new comps to test, find the right settings, and decide if there was a technique I preferred. On the text layer itself, I was able to apply the wiggle with some experession controls, no problems at all. In my second comp, when I employed the use of Sure Target (which itself uses thw Wiggle Experssion with controls), I found that my text would, at some random frame, suddenly pop over to X-0, and nothing I could would prevent it.
So there it is... 3 different situations in the last few days... different variables at play in each one, but a similar issue. The only commonality here is that all 3 issues involved 3rd party plugins, though all from different companies (Cycore, Red Giant, and Video Copilot), so maybe there is something to that... but there has to be more to it.
My next step is to try and replicate these issues at home, just to rule out the very unlikely possibility that this machine is the culprit.
Appogies for the length of this post - I know that will prevent some of you from reading it, but for those who do and can perhaps offer some theories or insights, I truly appreciate it.

FWIW the system I am using is a 2013 iMac 3.4GHz i7 with 16GB of RAM running OSX 10.8.4 and the latest version of Creative Cloud.Hi Guys,
Thanks for the repsonses. Todd, my versions for everything are as follows:
After Effects 12.0.0.404
FORM 2.0.5
Cycore Effects HD 1.7.5
CC Twister 1.6
There are no updates available for AE, the version we have of FORM is actually higher than what they have on their update pafe (they list 2.0.4), and the Cycore stuff is integtrated now, so I would expect any updates along those lines to be delivered via CC desktop.
So, whatever is causing the issue(s), I don't think versions are behind it. Even though the cache bugs that Mylenium referenced have been tended too, perhaps not all the bugs have been squashed. When I'm back in that project, I will try disabling the cache and fast previews to see if it makes a difference. -
Slow video down to single frame, pause a few seconds, then speed back up?
I'm working with a video clip where I'd like to show a single frame for a few seconds. I think I can figure out how to slow down the video for a second or two surrounding the desired frame, but I can't figure out how to pause or freeze it at that point.
I'd like it to be fairly smooth on the slowdown, stop, and start up, I'll also have the audio slow down and stop, I think it will be a neat effect.
Any good ideas?
iMac 20" Mac OS X (10.4.10)I'd like it to be fairly smooth on the slowdown, stop, and start up
A possibility is to use the Time Remap free filter. Use the default Mode (Variable Speed) and keyframe the Speed control from 100% to 0% on the frame you want still, and back to 100%. You can also use the Smooth contextual command on the 0% keyframe to get a smooth speed change.
What the filter does not do, though, is to change the audio speed...

How do I export a file to mov? I always get just a single frame.
I don't work in flash. So excuse my ignorance. I have a flash file that I want to import to After Effects. Everytime I try exporting it only exports a single frame and everytime I publish it I only get an html file. I'm getting fustrated! This should be straight forward!
Here's the file...

do you have any movieclips on the main timeline? (if yes, change them to graphic symbols and retest.) -
AE only doing single frame render
Hi, I have been using After Effects extensively for about a year now with no problems. I currently have two separate projects I am working on simutaneously. When I tried to prerender the AE files from one of my projects last night, nothing appeared to happen for a long while, then it eventually rendered a single-frame .avi video file. I shut down the computer for the night and tried again today, still doing the same thing.
I tried rendering AE files from the other project, and it works fine. Could this be a setting? I don't recall doing anything different that would cause such a strange setting, it seems to have just started in the middle of a project. Please help.
Oh, and yes, I do have the entire time-line selected.> Oh, and yes, I do have the entire time-line selected.<
Selected where?
You may have chosen a single frame render setting. Your output module or render may e set to work area nad you have somehow set a beginning and ending that spas only one frame. -
Hi,
I want to give the user the ability to navigate around an FMS-streamed video and adjust the playhead while remaining in a paused state. The video should just play the single frame that corresponds to the current playhead position. I can see that NetStream.play(...) gives me the ability to display only a single frame, but I can't find the equivalent in OSMF. Is there one?
Thanks,
KIrkI might be misunderstanding your use case, but I don't think you need to do anything special to display that single frame while seeking. Rather, you just need to call MediaPlayer.seek every time the playhead changes due to the user scrubbing. The seek method is designed so that subsequent calls will take precedence over the initial call, which enables a constant update of the current frame while seeking.
The ExamplePlayer sample app (source code here) exhibits this behavior. -
Converting a single frame swf to a gif
I have a couple of really cool animated 'shockwave flash
movie windows projector' images that i would love to convert into
animated gif's so that I can edit them to work in a theme I'm
designing for my sony ericsson w580i. I was finally able to convert
the exe files into swf's... but that didn't really do me any
good... same issue. Also upon further scrutiny I discovered that
both animated file types have only 1 frame! What should I do?!
Please help!!I've experienced the same thing sometime long in the past,
and I probably did a frame by frame Print Screen to get around it.
If it's single frame swf, then that's probably all you're going to
get is one frame as an output.
You may be able to incorporate a jpeg encoder of some sort to
take snapshots as the piece animates in some form of loop fashion,
but I'm not savvy in that dept. -
How to use single frame in a page
Hello, i would like to now how to make a frame in a page
without having two or more, i was used to work with GoLive and
there i could use the grid an put a single frame and make links to
other pages that would open in that frame, it worked wel for me,
but since I switched from golive to dreamweaver CS3 i am not able
to do so. Is there some one how could tel me how to do so, since i
use a lot of single frames in my pages,
greetingswhy are you wanting to use single frames?
They allow having the initial frame address stay in the
address bar, and not
show the linked page's address. The problems they cause
usually override any
value.
Or- if we aren't using the same words the same way, please
give an example
site of what you want to do.

HT200044 how to export a single frame in 10.0.6 - I cannot find option?
With 10.0.5 There was an option on "share" to pick a single frame from the timeline and export the image as a JPEG or other formats. I do not find this option on the new version.
It works now, you need to go back to share and a new option is available that was created by the step you mentioned, listed as share frame one -- when selected, this allows for exporting the frame to the desktop!
Thanks.

What's the simplest way to export a single frame from an animated gif as gif?
i have an animated gif and wish to save a single frame as a non-animated gif.
in the past i've been achieving this by deleting all the frames i don't wish to export and deleting them before exerting, this seems very clumsy though so i figure there's a more sensible solution in there somewhere, but where? Thanks, Bill! Actually version 9 looks a little clearer than that, as it has two bold clear white paddles to mark the edge of the work area.
I was a little frustrated at first, because whatever I did, it still took a year and exported the entire video.
Then:
I caught sight of this teeny tiny box waiting for a tick from me, which said:
Share Work area Bar Only
We have lift-off
Thanks again. So much quicker than all that deleting ahnd hoping you don't accidentally say "yes" when prompted to save changes! -
In this topic I'm not interested in security or data remanence (for such things we can turn to e.g. Wilders Security Forums).
I'm interested solely in best practice approaches to dealing with bad blocks on hard disks.
I read potentially conflicting information. Examples:
… 7-way write (not just zero all, it does NOT do a reliable safe job mapping out bad blocks) …
— https://discussions.apple.com/message/8191915#8191915 (2008-09-29)
… In theory zero all might find weak or bad blocks but there are better tools …
— https://discussions.apple.com/message/11199777#11199777 (2010-03-09)
… substitution will happen on the first re-write with Zeroes. More passes just takes longer.
— https://discussions.apple.com/message/12414270#12414270 (2010-10-12)
For bad block purposes alone I can't imagine seven overwrites being any more effective than a single pass of zeros.
Please, can anyone elaborate?
Anecdotally, I did find that a Disk Utility single pass of zeros seemed to make good (good enough for a particular purpose) a disk that was previously unreliable (a disk drive that had been dropped).@MrHoffman
As well pointed your answers are, you are not answering the original question, and regarding consumer device hard drives your answers are missleading.
Consumer device hard drives ONLY remap a bad sector on write. That means regardless how many spare capacity the drive has, it will NEVER remap the sector. That means you ALWAYS have a bad file containing a bad sector.
In other words YOU would throw away an otherwise fully functional drive. That might be reasonable in a big enterprise where it is cheaper to replace the drive and let the RAID system take care of it.
However on an iMac or MacBook (Pro) an ordinary user can not replace the drive himself, so on top of the drive costs he has to pay the repair bill (for a drive that likely STILL is in perfect shape, except for the one 'not yet' remaped bad block)
You simply miss the point that the drive can have still one million good reserve blocks, but will never remap the affected block in a particular email or particular song or particular calendar. So as soon as the file affected is READ the machine hangs, all other processes more or less hang at the same moment they try to perform I/O because the process trying to read the bad block is blocking in the kernal. This happens regardless how many free reserve blocks you have, as the bad block never gets reallocated, unless it is written to it. And your email program wont rewrite an email that is 4 years old for you ... because it is not programmed to realize a certain file needs to be rewritten to get rid of a bad block.
@Graham Perrin
You are similar stubborn in not realizing that your original question is awnsered.
A bad block gets remapped on write.
So obviously it happens at the first write.
How do you come to the strange idea that writing several times makes a difference? How do you come to the strange idea that the bytes you write make a difference? Suppose block 1234 is bad. And the blocks 100,000,000 to 100,000,999 are reserve blocks. When you write '********' to block 1234 the hard drive (firmware) will remap it to e.g. 100,000,101. All subsequent writes will go to the same NEW block. So why do you ask if doing it several times will 'improve' this? After all the awnsers here you should have realized: your question makes no sense as soon as you have understood how remapping works (is supposed to work). And no: it does not matter if you write a sequence od zeros, of '0's or of '1's or of 1s or of your social security number or just 'help me I'm hold prisoner in a software forum'.
I would try to find a software that finds which file is affected, then try to read the bad block until you in fact have read it (that works surprisngly often but may take any time from a few mins to hours) ... in other words you need a software that tries to read the file and copies it completely, so even the bad block is read (hopefully) successful. Then write the whole data to a new file and delete the old one (deleting will free the bad block and ar some later time something will be written there and cause a remap).
Writing zeros into the bad block basically only helps if you don't care that the affected file is corrupted afterwards. E.g. in case of a movie the player might crash after trying to display the affected area. E.g. if you know the affected file is a text file, it would make more sense to write a bunch of '-' signs, as they are readable while zero bytes are not (a text file is not supposed to contain zero bytes)
Hope that helped ;) -
How do I position to panels in a single frame?
Hi,
Can someone tell me how i can position two panels in a single frame using the BorderLayout class.
I have included my code below. When it is run it shows two JPanels positioned at the top and the bottom, a text area to the right, a panel in the center and a panel on the left. I want to get the panel on the left - the yellow panel - to be positioned in the lower third of the center panel. I have tried to use the BorderLayout.SOUTH statement - but this positions the panel across the very bottom which causes the bottom JPanel and part of the text area to disappear.
Can anyone help with this please???
Many thanks
