AE CC - Ram Preview Flips and Offsets. HELP.

Having this problem on our MacPro late 2013 (The Trashcan).
It's the maxed out version with two AMD FirePro D700 3gb
OSX 10.9.2
AE CC 12.2.1.5
We're running SwitchResX to scale down screen resolution on our Dell 4K monitors
I have rebooted but nothing seems to help.

Hello - i am having the same problem in both AE CC and AE CC2014...***BOTH VERSIONS OF AE are fully updated
It was working fine last week, although ive had this problem once or twice before - but it has never lasted this long. In the past, i seem to remember just restarting my computer.
I too had installed SwitchRes X recently, so i thought that might be the problem - but ive uninstalled the software, and removed the prefpane in my system settings.
Also, Ive just installed the CUDA 6.5.46 update - yet in CC2014, it is not showing up in the Pref/Previews - it is showing up in AECC, but having the same RAM preview problems

  • CS6 RAM preview short and "needs 2 or more frames" errors

    Hello everyone,
I've been researching this one for over a week now and still haven't found a solution. The short story it is that my RAM preview is limited to only a few seconds regardless of work area, but I've got over 4Gb of RAM available and open for use. CPU is barely being used as well. I'm also intermittently getting the "After Effects Error: RAM Preview requires 2 or more frames to playback,"  which confuses me as I have 4Gb or ram available. RAM is still close to 4Gb during and after preview. This has been a repeated problem, not matter how many times the memory is purged, the RAM is free'd up with the Memory Clear App (as recommended in previous threads), or the computer is restarted. Memory and Cache have been optimized for best performance as well. Also, final renders are fine and have no problems. It's only with RAM preview and previewing the project that I'm having trouble. It seems to me that the project is being bottlenecked somewhere but not sure where or how. To open, here's the system I'm running it on. It may not be a brute but it should be enough to handle the work.
    System:
Program: Adobe After Effects CS6 (11.0.4.2
    System: Mid 2010 iMAC, 27-inch
Processor: 2.8 GHz Intel Core i5
    RAM:   8GB 1333 MHz DDR3 (two 4gb cards)
Graphics: ATI Radion HD 5750 1024 MB
    Software: OS X 10.9.4
Hard Drive: Western Digital WD Green 2TB Sata drive
                        -6.0 Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive
Project Specifics: (Has happened across other similar projects)
Project: Educational video with graphics, simple animations, and link to Premiere Pro timeline.
-33 layers (most are highlight boxes and animated arrows)
-13 small PNG images (Arrows and simple graphics with 1 3D layer)
                             -7 Short Compositions
                             -7 Text Layers
                             -5 shape layers
                             -1 Premiere Pro Timeline
    Composition Settings: 1280 x 720  at 23.976fps
    Project Location: Company Server
    Problems
-Ram preview only renders a few seconds, regardless of Work Area or "From Current Time" enabled.
-Fairly frequent, "After Effects Error: RAM preview requires two or more frames to playback."
-Scrolling through project is very pixelated.
When Problems Occurs: When trying to perform a RAM preview.
    Attempted Solutions:
    - Use of Memory Clean App to open up more RAM. (Makes little to no difference when problem is at peak.)
    - Shut down and restart computer (Does work for a short time but problem reappears within an hour)
    - Closing all apps and running just After Effects. (Little to no difference)
    - Turning off motion blur, turning on 3D draft and using Proxies to simplify project. (Little to no difference)
    - Purge: All Memory. (No difference)
    - Stopping any unnecessary processes in Activity Monitor. (No difference)
    Additional Information:
-Projects seem to take a little longer than normal to open. (1-2 min max.)
Thanks in advance for any support on this issue. It's been quite a stressful timesink.

Unfortunately the problem has come back again after an hour of use this morning. To show how much RAM I have available at the time the issue appears, I've included the Memory Clean window showing 4.44GB of ram available at the time of incident. It first happened a few minutes ago with roughly 1GB available, so I and purged all memory in After Effects and cleaned the RAM with the Memory Clear app, but still no such luck.  I've been working with the same actions and material all morning so nothing new was introduced to the project when the error occurred. The work I was performing at the time was animating highlight boxes over a screen capture, but again it seems to happen regardless of what I'm working on. I'm going to restart the computer and see how long it makes it before needing another reset. Any other ideas as to what it could be? Also, if there's any more information that might be helpful to solving the issue please let me know and I'll be happy to share. Thank you again for the support!
Szalam, thank you for the link. I had been to the page previously but am going back to watch them again to see if I missed something. If it is a bottleneck, I'm not sure where it could be as of yet.
And just to make sure I'm not making any other simple mistakes VVV

  • RAM Preview framerate and sound issues

The same story as usual. A beginner who can't get the framerate right or the sound to play in the RAM Preview. Well then:
    Ae CS6.11.0.0378, I think
    Demo version
    7,9 g ram allocatable
    Win7 proffesional
Only .avi and .mp4, can't tell much more than that
All other common factors can think of vary between the layers, with no difference.
Sound preview set to 10 minutes
    No mute-related settings activated
Sound and volume checked for each individual layer
I don't know what more to submit, there's probably a lot.
It's quite simple. No sound in the RAM preview, and it keeps freezing, not responding when I start it,  and playing at random speeds. The sound does play in sound preview. The framerate is set to auto.
That's about all I can think of. It probably needs a lot more detail required, but not anything I can think of.  Any help appreciated.

You can get the frame rate right by dragging a clip in question onto the Make Comp icon at the bottom of the project window.
If you're fooling around with time -- time stretch, time remapping, posterize time, time displacement -- or using Rotobrush or Warp Stabilizer -- you should know that AE doesn't like mp4's as the source video.  No telling about the avi.
There could also be compressed audio in the video files, and AE has never played nice with compressed audio.

  • After Effects Rendering Problem and RAM Preview Problem

I posted a question about this yesterday but I thought I would repost it with more detail!
I have a restless issue here with rendering and RAM preview. I am simply trying to create a viral ad which uses the cloning effect I achieved with masking for my college coursework and I have completed the process of creation but I have ran into problems. The RAM preview will only play up to a certain point then it will just stop and this effects the final render because it gets to the point in the rendering where the RAM preview stops and then a message will pop up saying the rendering has failed or something? (Screenshots Below)
I have tried RAM previewing just one of the three videos I am using and it still stops at the same point.
I am using .avi files and have tried converting to .mov, .mp4, .wmv all of which didn't work.
I am using After Effects CS4 ver 9.0.0.346
    My computer specs
AMD SEMPRON processor 2.7Ghz (single core)
2GB RAM (I know its not alot ;))
    ATI Radeon HD 5600 512mb
    Creative audigy 2 sound card
    Windows XP Serivice Pack 3
It's quite urgent and I hope someone can help!
    Cheers!

With just 2GB of RAM, I'm impressed that you can generate that much of a RAM preview.  RAM previews use RAM. When they run out, they stop.
Have you tried rendering the clip using the Render Queue.  If so, does it also report an error at a similar point?  If it renders correctly from the queue, you're done.  If it doesn't, you probably have a corrupt source file.

  • (MP) RAM Previews haven't worked reliably since February

I was really hoping the CC 2014 update would address this issue I've been experiencing since February, but the issue remains and if anything is worse than ever. Long story short, sometimes RAM previews work as expected (as in I press the RAM preview button and After Effects actually generates a RAM preview) and other times pressing the RAM preview button results in delays ranging from several seconds to several minutes or simply never doing anything at all. Sometimes, it's the horrendous "Initializing Background Processes this may take some time..." message, and other times it's "Rendering frame (MP) 2 of XXX requested" followed by...nothing ever happening. Try to imagine how frustrating this can be when on a deadline or with clients in the room.
I'd read that the size of your project can be a major factor in such delays. Well, I just started a brand new project that contains exactly one asset (a 1920x1080 22-second H264 video file), added a couple filters and clicked RAM Preview, only to be met with the "Rendering frame (MP) 2 of XXX requested" message and no frame ever rendered. Activity monitor showed 8 red "aeselflink (Not Responding) processes that didn't go away when I quit After Effects. I quit After Effects, logged out and back in, relaunched the project and RAM preview worked as expected. As I said, completely unreliable and unpredictable.
I need RAM Previews to work all of the time, not some of the time, and I need them to work with multi-processing enabled. I realize that disabling multi-processing for RAM previews resolves the up-front delays - but using only one of my eight CPUs is NOT a fix (considering each RAM preview would therefore take 8 times longer). Nor is rebooting and relaunching After Effects a dozen times per day a real solution, right?
My system is a 2013 New Mac Pro, 3Ghz 8-Core Intel Xeon E5, 32GB RAM, Dual D300 GPUs running Mac OS X 10.9.3 and purchased in January; I don't recall experiencing the issue prior to the February 13th AE update). The issue is present with both Adobe After Effects CC 12.2 and Adobe After Effects CC 2014 13.0. My Memory and Multi-Processing Preferences are in the attached image. I truly appreciate any help that can be offered. Thank you!

Rick, please read my third paragraph. While yes - disabling multi-processing helps, effectively turning my computer into a one-processor machine instead of an 8-processor machine is not a solution.
And I experience these long delays even with NO filters or 3rd party effects whatsoever. I just rendered an animation that was nothing more than a couple sliding illustrator layers with a 3D camera move and the render took 3 full minutes to get beyond "initializing background processes, this may take some time...". This just after a fresh launch of Adobe After Effects.

  • Ram Preview only part of Composition

Might be a stupid question but I couldn't find it anywhere in the help files, do I have to RAM Preview from the current time to the end of the composition?  Is there a way I can preview say.....the next 5 seconds?
Just trying to sync audio and graphics and there has to be a better way to do it than RAM Preview over and over.
    Thanks in advance,

Here's a pretty handy thing to know: when you scrub your audio to find just the right point on your timeline, make sure the Caps Lock key is ON.  This prevents the video in the comp from updating, and it's a snap to find the right place in the audio.
Then put a marker on the timeline: Shift-0 thru Shift-9 on the ALPHANUMERIC part of the keyboard, not the numeric keypad.  You can then jump to the marker, just by hitting the 0 thru 9 keys, using the  ALPHANUMERIC part of the keyboard, not the numeric keypad.
    No RAM Preview necessary!
Want to re-use those timeline markers?  Just drag 'em off way to the right in their little "timeline marker house"... I forget its proper name.  It's so difficult to remember such trivial little things without a proper graphic map of the AE interface.  Adobe USED to print them, y'know...

  • After Effects CS6 error: RAM Preview needs 2 or more frames to playback - any ideas please?

    Hi everyone,
    I'm running After Effects CS6 (11.0.4.2) on a MacBook Pro 2.8Ghz with 16GB RAM (Mac OS 10.9.4)
As a test, I created a 3 and a half minute Sequence in Adobe Premiere CS6, and then imported this into After Effects CS6, and placed it on the AE timeline.
This footage involves a couple of 1920x1080p footage movies, some psds and a large number of JPGs exported from two videos arranged as a sequence in two layers in Premiere, one on top of the other. So all in all for a Premiere / After Effects file I'd say it's reasonably heavy.
I then did a RAM Preview with Multiprocessing switched off - the 3 and a half minute sequence loaded into RAM, taking about 1min 30seconds, and played back in realtime at 25fps. This worked fine with 3,4,5 and 6 GB RAM available to other applications in the Memory Preferences. All things considered I think this is quite good. I can make changes, reclick the RAM Preview icon and my changes load into RAM and it previews ok.
My only 'complaint' is how long the RAM Preview takes to load up the whole thing.
I've been reading up on Multiprocessing and decided to try this to see if I can speed up the time it takes my RAM Preview to load up.
So I looked at some recommendations from Adobe and read information on various forums including this one.
My settings in the Memory Preferences are currently
    • 6GB reserved for other applications
    • Reduce cache size when system is low on memory - unticked
    • After Effects Multiprocessing - ticked
    • Installed CPUs (processor cores) - 8
    • CPUs reserved for other applications - 6
    • RAM allocation per background CPU - 3GB
    • Actual CPUs that will be used - 2
This combination takes about 25 seconds to load up my 3 and a half minute sequence which I thought was pretty amazing.
I then pressed the stop button and then the play button - so now just playing the sequence briefly.
And also added a new layer - into the timeline - just a simple shape.
Then I tried a RAM Preview again.
I found I could load up part of the sequence but not load the whole thing into RAM.
I kept trying to get a RAM Preview and got this message
"After Effects error: RAM Preview needs 2 or more frames to playback" which seems to prevent RAM Preview from working.
Eventually I quit and restarted After Effects and the problem went away temporarily and then came back when I tried again.
I tried various changes to the Memory Preferences - trying 3GB available for other applications. This gave 13GB of my 16GB RAM to After Effects.
This made it take slightly longer for the After Effects error to appear but it still appeared.
I tried ticking Reduce Cache size in the Memory Prefs  - the After Effects error still appeared, so having read this is supposed to make the issue better I now leave it untucked, but as far as I can see ticked or untucked, it makes no difference, the problem remains.
    I've since tried -
Making 2,3,4,5 and 6 CPUs available for other applications.
Changing the Background RAM allocation per background CPU to 0.75GB, 1GB, 1.5GB, 2GB and 3GB
    Lots of combinations.
But in the end, I always get the "After Effects error: RAM Preview needs 2 or more frames to playback" error.
It might take less or more time for the message to show up, depending on the combination of settings, but in the end I always got the same message appearing.
And I notice that I can RAM Preview less and less of the timeline. i.e. it becomes more blue than it does green and will load in only a small section of the timeline as opposed to the whole thing.
Reading further, I tried Edit > Purge > Image Cache and Edit > Purge > All Memory but still get the error message.
I also tried ensuring there were no other applications running e.g. Safari or Chrome or Firefox. And certainly not Photoshop or Premiere etc.
Reading even further, I tried two Memory management applications - 'Memory Clean' and 'Purge.'
Neither has had any effect - the After Effects error still appears.
Then I went back into the Memory and Multiprocessing Preferences.
I unticked Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously. And now the RAM Preview loads the whole 3 and half minute sequence in entirety, taking about 1 and half minutes to do so. It's working as perfectly as if I'd just quit and re-opened the application.
Then I went back into the Memory and Multiprocessing Preferences.
I reticked Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously.
The chose Edit > Purge > All
And tried a RAM Preview again. It loaded up in 25 seconds, but then, as previously, the error message came.
I tried Edit > Purge All - no effect.
And I tried going into the Media and Disk Cache Preferences and clicked Empty Disk Cache - still the problem remains.
I understand from my reading that After Effects CS6 11.0.2 was intended to fix this issue but I'm on 11.0.4 and as far as I can tell, I still have it - assuming it's the same thing.
As far as I can see, not using Multiprocessing allows me to work without these errors but take a bit longer to load the RAM Preview.
However I'd like to be able to use Multiprocessing as it seems it can potentially speeds things up quite a lot. I realise I could just not use it and AE would work, but I'd rather be able to make use of a feature of the software if possible, especially if it will speed things up and make optimum use of the my computer's hardware.
I've downloaded a trial copy of After Effects CC 2014. I'm still testing it but as far as I can see the RAM Preview error appears in this version of AE as well, but can take bit longer to show up in my experience.
Thanks everyone - if anyone has any thoughts or advice I'd appreciate hearing your opinions.
    Kind regards,
    John

You need to have much more RAM reserved for other applications and more CPUs reserved for other applications. Your current settings are crippling your performance.
    Read these:

After you have adjusted your settings according to the recommendations on those pages, restart your computer and try again.

  • After Effects Ram Preview Drops Frames , Using Strangely Too Much Ram

    System Specs :
         CPU : Core i7 4770k
         Memory : 16 GB DDRIII
         Graphic Card : GTX 770 4GB RAM
         Storage : 256 GB SSD + 2 TB HDD
         OS : Windows 7 SP1
         Using After Effects CC 12.2.1.5
NOTE : NOT ANY ADDITIONAL HARDWARE IS ATTACHED TO MY PC . NO SOUND RELATED EQUIPMENT NOR CAPTURE CARD NOR ANY THING ELSE
    Hi there
As you Already Don't know I'm an After effects Specialist Using it for quite long time . There is an Ancient Problem with CS6 CC versions . I have a short Small size 1080p Video , about 8 MB , I drag it into project panel and then put it into timeline hence it creates a sequence . There are no Effects and nothing added to timeline , just a small simple video . The Strange Problem is when I click "0" for ram preview , The video starts playing and the green bar above timeline starts to fill . When Ram preview Finishes and plays the video from beginning I See there are several frames Between which are not being loaded to Ram ! The video plays RGB color bar instead of main video and when I check the Green bar above Timeline I see that those frames are being dropped and there is no Green bar above them !
I have had this problem several times before but this time it is too important and the problem should be solved . What is obvious is that some frames are not being rendered or are being deleted after render !
Another Strange problem is that when I open Task manager , It shows AE uses around 10 GB ! of RAM when I press "0" for Ram previewing this video !
So there is a Logical explanation here , Somehow when I do ram preview this video it uses extra ordinary too much ram so AE is unable to load the full video (8 MB) into Ram and hence deletes some of frames .
most of my videos have not this problem and use acceptable amount of ram .I've had this issue with some of my videos till now .
Listen carefully : "This has nothing to do with AE preferences or low memory or plugins . because there is nothing wrong with any individual components of may hardware or software . I have far more than enough RAM for a 8MB video . My Memory has no hardware or software problem . I tested them and if there was any problem with memory or other hardware that should have affected other applications . I have the most recent AE version . I have the most Recent windows updates and drivers . I have a Clean virus free system , and as a computer engineer this strange AE problem is rarely caused by viruses , trust me . I have not any hardware instead of ones a normal PC has . I have not any problem with my whole entire system configuration because I have benchmarked my PC with several up to date softwares . I have tested my PC with almost any STRESS TESTING solutions available for really long period of time , 3 days by IDA64 . Not any driver conflict , dll missing , registry problem have been discovered , as I know perfectly how to solve them ."
I asked some of my friend whom are expert in AE . I handed them my videos and Watched ALL OF THEM HAD THE SAME ISSUE ! So the problem isn't related to my Local PC . What i believe is that there is some malfunctioning or miss coded part in AE source code that decides to reserve such a huge strange amount of ram for such a tiny 8MB video . The point is that the AE works fine , no crash or any problem report . So the AE it Self decides to allocate such huge amount of ram and thinks it is correct ! So I think this is a work around that AE developers in adobe are using to bypass a problem or conflict ! by Using more amount of RAM . I think that there might be some miss understanding between the AE and my installed codec . I installed MEGA CODEC PACK on my PC to enable some new codec supports , and so are some of Windows default de/encoders changed to new ones . I think there shouldn't be any problem But there is something wrong between AE and de/encoder modules !
Please any one with any suggestion , I really appreciate your advices .

    ###UPDATED###
Well thank you guys for your patience ...
as you considered I forgot to mention the codec itself and other stuff ...
The video is in 1080p , 35 sec long , it is a green screen shot , this video is directly downloaded from YouTube and plays perfectly on all tested PCs . here are detailed info :

    Format profile                          : Base Media
    File size                                 : 8.55 MiB

    Scan type                                 : Progressive
NOTICE : This video is just for testing the lighting and etc , and so the Sampling and other specs are not considered for broadcast .
I think you hit the point ! Thats K-lite codec pack installed on every machine which the video is tested on ! The point is whats wrong with it ?! I have had never ever any problem with this codec pack !!!
The deadly question : So what are the alternative ways to work with codecs that AE doesn't support ?! because installing codec looks simple and sufficient !

  • Ram preview not playing from first frame

Anyone else having problems with Ram preview playing back from a different spot in the timeline OTHER than the first frame? I have seen this happening consistently since the latest update (2014.2). I checked my preferences, and made sure nothing is accidentally selected to play from the last keyframe or something odd. But no. I am on a Mac Pro, running Yosemite, I googled this, and haven't seen anything. I haven't trashed my preferences yet, because I'm not sure it's a preference issue, and god...if I have to rebuild my render setting one more time...
So to give you more detail.
    - I hit "0" on my number pad to launch a ram preview
    - It LOOKS like it's rendering each frame in order
    - When I hit "0" again to playback, it starts from a random location usually about 2 - 5 seconds from the beginning of the timeline.
    - It will loop back and then play from the start of the timeline.
It's not using the current time indicator line or anything that would make sense. It's random, but near the start. I suspect it's pulling keyframe information from a nested pre-comp and using that, but there is not a keyframe in the comp I'm previewing.
I also do not have the "From Current Time" checked box in the Ram Preview options, and there are 0 skip frames in that setting as well.
If anyone has any ideas what this may be...I'd appreciate it.

  • RAM previewing issue

    Hi,
I'm working in After Effects CS4, and I'm having a problem when I try to RAM preview short sections of an animation project. The RAM preview keeps stopping before it reaches the end of the work area, and beginning again. I'm pretty new to the program, but I've also noticed the little green bars that, I believe, tell you if the section has rendered/processed always have little gaps in them. That may be related. I don't know.
Does anyone know what may be causing this RAM previewing issue?
On a side note, I'm using After Effects on a Macbook (not a Macbook Pro), and I'm wondering whether this problem may be due to the Macbook not being sufficient for After Effects and CS4 in general. (I had originally intended to install the program on my 2004-era G5 tower, but it wouldn't install After Effects CS4 because apparently the program won't work with PowerPC processors, only Intel ones. At least that's what I was told.) Anyway, I've wondered whether the RAM previewing issue may be due to the Macbook not being enough computer for After Effects/CS4. My Macbook has a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 and 106 GB of available space.
Any insights on the RAM previewing issue and whether my Macbook isn't a suitable computer for these programs would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks a lot,
    Neil

From the theoretical specs there is nothing that speaks against your notebook. Apparently the biggest hurdle for some users is to get it to run in the first place, but now that it runs, it's safe to say that you will be able to use it properly. Of course, to let truth have its way, you will become slightly peeved at a point and get that yearning for a new machine, when you use more functions and your projects become more complex. Especially the only 2GB RAM will then often become a show stopper and you will really hate Adobe when one of those dreaded "Could not creat X x Y buffer" or similar out of memory warnings pop up. Still, no need to rush. Take your time and see, if AE is even everything you thought it would be and then make clear, structured plans for getting a new computer. You wouldn't wanna spend another 2000 bucks on a spiffy machine just to run AE once a month.

  • Disappearing RAM Previews

Uh oh.  Is it my (Windows Vista) machine going downhill or is this an After Effects CS4 thing?  I'll do a RAM preview - standard definition, maybe 10 seconds, no biggie .. and after I get a green solid line I'll play the preview.  Once I play the preview - POOF - part or sometimes all of the RAM preview disappears and I have to re-render the region.
    Preferences:
I don't have Multi Processing on.  I am not writing to a disk cache.  I have Prevent DLL Fragmentation on.  32 levels of Undo.  Files are local on the drive - nothing external.
It seems like a recent thing too, and I haven't changed anything.  I also find that I'm waiting more and more for the dreaded Locking Existing Frames in the Info box.

My misery would love some company,
    Thank you,

As in do I have Windows Media Player?  Yes.  Version 11.0.6002.18065
    Any alternate video players installed?
Just Windows Media Play and Quicktime.  I even tried upgrading
Did you do some system maintenance - cleanup with CCleaner, defragmentation, scandisk?
No.  I have plenty of space too ... 55GB.
    What source footage?
Doesn't matter - it happens with everything and anything.  From just Illustrator parts to timelines that are just cuts of Quicktime movies to AVCHD .mts files.  Each has the same Locking Frames delay and then disappearing sections of RAM previews.  Operative word by the way is SECTIONS - not ALL of the preview will disappear.
    What effects are involved?
Nothing specific.  It even happens on layers that even feature NO effects.
    OpenGL?
    Nope.  Off.
I know ... it's a real humdinger.  There doesn't seem to be anything that screams out, "You have the 'erase RAM previews' checkbox checked".

  • I got render and RAM preview problems. help?

i got render and RAM preview problems with after effects! please help me
when i started on a project earlier today the RAM preview was failing and it stoped making a preview after about a second, when i hit the RAM preview buttom again it continued to load and stoped again after a half second, and it continued to do that till it wasn't loading at all, just playing the same thing up even doe it haden't loaded the whole composition! BUT if i moved the (thing you see where you are on the timeline in need of a better name) it started loading a little more and then it stoped again.. so after alot of problems and moving i managed to make a RAM preview of the whole composition..
now the real problem: when i was done with my project and i was going to reender i did like this: i added my composition to the render queue, chosed my render settings and started to render, after exactly 37 frames it stoped and no window or anything poped up, the only thing that was telling me something was wrong was the render status, and it said: ''failed at 0;00;00;37'' that's not even a second! and BTW when i render after effects only uses 12% of my 6GB RAM memory.. i dont know what to do! i've tried other render settings but the same thing happens! can anyone help me?
BTW i'm swedish and only 14 so i might misspelled something..

Start here and make sure that you understand how RAM preview is supposed to work first:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/424030
What version of After Effects? Have you installed the recent updates? What operating system? What kind(s) of source footage? Has this ever worked before? What other software are you running? Do you have any third-party effects or codecs installed? Are you rendering with OpenGL?
What are your Memory & Multiprocessing settings? Are you using Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing?

  • Multiprocessing works for RAM preview, extremely slow and aeselflink crashes when in Render Queue

    Hello all,
    System specs:
    Hackintosh
    OSX 10.9
    3.5Ghz (overclocked to 4.2Ghz) Core i7
Geforce GTX 580 classified 3GB Cuda GPU
AMD Radeon HD 6870 1GB Display GPU
    32 GB of RAM
    System SSD
    5 drive internal RAID
    After Effects CC 12.2.1.5
    Cuda drivers up to date
I'm having a problem with the render queue and multiprocessing. I have a moderate sequence with several effects and 3D layers. When I'm working in the composition, everything goes great. I can RAM preview and all my CPU cores will kick up to 100% and render the composition in no time all; with full resolution with no skipped frames. It works fantastically.
Then when I go to render the exact same composition with the same multiprocessing settings, AE will hang at the "initializing background processes" for at least 5-10 minutes, during which the CPU will ramp up to 100% but no frames will be rendered. AE still remains responsive, as I can hit the stop or pause buttons and the queue will be cancled. But then the aeselflink processes (up to 8 of them depending on my settings, I've tried several) will still continue at 100% cpu load even with AE not set to render anything. I will have to go into the activity monitor and force quit each process. If I leave it for 5-10 minutes, it will finally stop initalizing and start the render, but the CPU will still run at 100% but the frames will crawl slowly forward at about 1 frame per minute, with an estimated 28 hours to render frames that were rendering in under a minute during RAM preview.
I have tried both reducing the number of cores AE will use, adjusting the allocated RAM, and disabling multiprocessing alltogether. When I disable multiprocessing, the render slows to a complete crawl, and it will render around 1 frame every 5-10 seconds. Again, this is on a composition that rendered in less than a minute on full resolution with RAM preview.
The only way to get this composition to render is to export it to Media Encoder, which will render it (without multicore processing, unfortunately) in about 8 minutes, still not the blazing fast RAM preview but at least it finishes it in under 3.5 hours (the amount of time that the multiprocessing disabled render in AE will take).
Here's the multiprocessing settings that have been very stable and carried me through other projects. Disk Cache is not enabled. The only other thing that is disabled is the "Disable Layer Cache" under the Secret menu as the plugins I'm using (Plexus 2 in this case) doesn't like to update when the camera moves so this option has been disabled to force it to reset each frame.
Does anyone know what is going on?
Also, please don't tell me that I should not use multiprocessing or instruct me on basic steps as to increase preformance on my machine. I have been tweaking my memory and multiprocessing settings for a long time now, and it is completely stable in everything but this setup. So please no answers saying "just don't use multiprocessing". It was made for a reason, it's effective, and it's needed. And please don't say that it's the hackintosh, either, as it's the most stable and powerful computer I've ever used. Sorry for the disclaimers, I just want to have constructive help.
Thank you in advance for your ideas!

Hi Rick, not sure if you saw the part where I said please don't reply with turning off Multiprocessing, and I did not say that it works and is effective in all areas. However, if you actally take the time to read my post, you will definately notice that RAM preview with multiprocessing takes under a minute to render a scene. Multiprocessing disabled and rendered in AE takes 3.5 hours. In Media Encoder it takes around 8 minutes. Clearly it IS working and IS effective for my case and my rig. Any vendettas against MP does not help my situation at all.

  • AE CS5 (10.0.1.19) Ram Preview - Audio stops and continue playing randomly

I already reported this issue to Adobe as a BUG but I want to ask here if somebody else have this problem or can confirm it.
Audio breaks/stops and continue playing randomly when 'Ram Previewing'
It happens mostly when the RAM is fully filled up with image cache files! When the Ram is not filled up totally with image cache files it happens rarely!
Steps to reproduce BUG / issue:
    1. create a new composition with a length of for example 5 minutes.
    2. create a new solid with size of 50x50 pixel and animate the position of the solid for a very long time so when ram previewing the whole ram/memory gets filled up with different image cache data (this is very important!). Alternatively you could use a long video file to fill up the RAM completely.
    3. import a wave file .wav 16bit 48khz uncompressed which is very long for example 5 minutes.
    4. insert the wave file in the earlier created composition which contain the animated solid or video file.
    5. Set the work area bar (preview range) for the whole composition.
'Ram Preview' the composition until the whole RAM/memory is filled up with image data.
AE has to stop rendering because there is no more space available in RAM.
make sure 'from current time' checkbox is off.
    6. listen to the audio which stops playing randomly for about 1-2 seconds and comes back and continues playing (***BUG***)
    7. Now set the right handle of the composition work area bar (preview range) to less then the maximum RAM size
(less then the green cache indicator on the right side)
    8. "Purge image caches" or "Purge All"
    9. Ram preview the now smaller work area
    10. listen to the audio. The audio breaks are gone! (***Workaround***)
    Additional information:
I have the latest After Effects CS5 update installed (10.0.1.19)
This behavior is tested with different audio drivers inside After Effects CS5 (After Effects WDM Sound, Generic Low Latency ASIO Driver,  ASIO DirectX Full Duplex Driver)
I also tried different Sample Sizes Buffers (alternatively to the default 2048 samples) but without success.
Reducing the amount of RAM which After Effects can access didn't solve the problem!
    System:
Win7 64bit all latest Updates, 8GB RAM, CPU: intel Core 2 Extreme QX9300, nVidia Quadro FX 2700M, IDT High Definition Audio Driver v6.10.0.6227
There is no driver problem on my system because After Effects CS3 & CS4, Premiere & Soundbooth CS3 CS4 CS5 have no audio problems!
I have lots of other professional audio software like Steinberg Cubase 5.... on the same system and they all work fine.
I also turned off AVG Anitivirus and Windows firewall for testing without success.
AdobeQT32Server.exe, dynamiclinkmanager.exe, PProHeadless.exe, afterfx.exe do not get blocked by firewall they have full permission.
The CS5 Production Premium installation went fine and without errors and antivirus protection was turned off for the installation.
    Any help would be nice!
    Felix

    Yep, I agree with craulmedia....
It's 1 month ago after my initial post and no valuable feedback from Adobe although I filled out the bug report in addition to this post and provide my email for further information.
The only reason for upgrading from CS4 -> CS5 production suite was the use of all my 8GB RAM in AE and now AE can use it but when it's using it the audio have issues.
CS5 is on the market for nearly a year and still have such essential issues... And my fear rises there will be no valuable update fixing these issues but instead Adobe forces me to upgrade later this year to CS6 in hope something change...
I have had support request for different Adobe products in the past including telephone support, web support via Adobe ID... none with success the web support answered my request 3 weeks later with the message they will look into it... time went by and in the end the result was "Yes we know it's a known bug" the bug did not get fixed for that CS version. it even exists in the next major CS release! (talking about EncoreDVD here). Once the web support answered weeks later when I was in holidays and after some days I was not able to respond they closed my case. I reopened the case but never got an answer! Telephone support is nearly waste of time because in 95% of all cases it does not help to reinstall the whole operating system and talking to people who know less about computers in general or Adobe products then my mom - it's a waste of time.
I don't want to blame here anybody for things happend in the past I just want to point out that this time I choose an other support channel (bug report and forum post) but it seems that this support channel is also a waste of time after 1 month with no valueable feedback!
I bumped up this post 2 times and thanks to craulmedia for the third time.
And now here is my fourth time *BUMP*
All I got so far is: "I saw your bug report it's in the queue"
Is it still in the queue? which queue nr. does it have? how long will it take to get any answer? is it reproducible? Is it confirmed as a known bug by Adobe? Is Adobe working on a fix? When will this fix be available? Is the fix provided in form of an update or in the next major release?
OK, I know this is a user to user forum and Adobe people only stop by in their free time and there is no guarantee for any real support.
But it started out so good in the first time...
Last 2 things I want to add here:
    1. Why should I provide my email in the bug report? Sure so Adobe can get back to me for further information... but wouldn't it be nice if Adobe would be so kind to give some status report to that given email as a small present for the enthusiastic beta testers ?
    2. please Adobe take a look at www.uservoice.com already Autodesk started to move there with 3ds Max.
