AE changing aspect ratio of rendered frames

I'm rendering .png frames at NTSC DV, 720x480, Pixel aspect 0.9.  My composition settings in AE are set to the same, however, when I import the frames they are listed as 720x480 (1.11).  When viewed in the composition window the frames extend past the viewable area on both sides.  Using AE 7.0.
Why is this happening, and how do I fix it?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

This is going to sound weird but it's the truth. The aspect ratio doesn't change the pixels. Aspect ratio only sets the interpretation - or tells a video app how to  make those pixels fit in a desired space on a scan line. It's a lot like the PPI tag added to images intended for print. The tag has nothing to do with the actual pixels.
That said, if you can't find a setting for choosing pixel aspect ratio when you setup the output module and the render settings, then the PAR tag won't be added to the render. AE, or your NLE will then take a look at the frame size and make a guess as to PAR and field order. The guess may be wrong. If it is, all you have to do is go into the interpretation settings and change them.
I'd guess you're rendering to a DV codec. If so, there's no PAR tag so all you have to do is reset the interpretation. The same goes for Premiere or FCP or Vegas or any other NLE. Sometimes DV footage gets interpreted as the wrong PAR.
Hope this helps.

  • Changing Aspect Ratio in FCPX 10.0.08

Hi - I think I must be losing my marbles because i cant, for the life of me, find out how to change Aspect Ratio during edit.
My rushes are previewable as full screen but once i pull them into the timeline they get letterboxed automatically.
I search online and came across advice to go to Sequence > Settings > Change Aspect Ratio, but i cant seem to locate it.
    Can anyone help?

I dont seem to have that icon?

  • Nested sequences change aspect ratio of clips underneath them

    Premiere Pro 6.0.5
    Mac Book Pro Retina
    See attached screen shots:
    1. Nested sequence is off - everything under is is crisp and proper aspect ratio
    2. Nested sequence is on - everything under it is blurry and wrong aspect ratio
    3. Only nested sequence is on - so you can see it does NOT contain the layers underneath it by mistake
Why is this happening?  It's really troubling... It generally happens when I go to render my sequence - it goes all haywire wrong aspect ratio when rendered with that transparent nested sequence above everything.
    Image 1:
Nested sequence is off - everything under is is crisp and proper aspect ratio
    Image 2:
Nested sequence is on - everything under it is blurry and wrong aspect ratio (it gets pushed up - see black line that is formed on the bottom)
    Image 3:
Only nested sequence is on - so you can see it does NOT contain the layers underneath it by mistake

Crap... I noticed that this glitch now spread to even clips that have NOTHING above them.  The scaling is wrong, and image quality gets a bit blurry after rendering.  It always squishes my clips up after rendering, but they look absolutely perfect pre-render.
    New example:
    1. Clip 01 - Opacity slightly turned down to destroy the rendered preview - looks perfect:
    2. Clip 01 - Opacity all the way up, clip rendered wrong - bottom squishes up.  Whyyyyy:

  • Can you 'force" change aspect ratio for DVD player 4.0?

    Hi,
I have burnt a dvd-r from my pioneer hdd/dvd recorder (630H). The program is in 16:9 ratio but plays at 4:3 on my powerbook dvd player 4. (All other dvd-r burnt via other burners appear OK however - so I guess this is something peculiar to the Pioneer) Why is this?. Question is: is there any way to "force" the apple dvd player to change aspect ratios? Thanks for any assistance.

I've got about 20 video tracks and one audio track all laid out and I've decided I'd like to insert something before the audio track so if I move the audio track everything else will be off.  Is there a way to shift all the video tracks and the audio track over to the right to make room for the inserted video?

  • Change aspect ratios

How do I change aspect ratios before I start a project? 4:3 or 16:9
I have looked everywhere and do not see it.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

Change the Easy Setup to the appropriate anamorphic or widescreen format. If you make a new project the new sequence in it and the capture settings will be in the format you assigned.

  • Viewport Node: Changes Aspect Ratio: Causes Skewing - Why?

    Hello!
I'm trying to create simple zooms on photos and news articles for a documentary. So far, I've been using a Zoom node plugged into a Viewport node, which usually works just fine.
However, on some photos the Viewport script will randomly switch from a 1920x1080 aspect ratio to, e.g. 1919x1080. This causes the rendered Quicktime files to have a "skewed" effect on those random frames where the aspect ratio has changed.
Note: The aspect ratio appears to be changing as I drag the Viewerport node (set at 1920x1080) from one area of the photo to another.
Any suggestions on how to avoid this problem?
    Thanks for your time.
    (Shake 4.1)

I think the problem you are having is because having the Viewport AFTER your
Zoom means that the Viewport is trying to adapt its crop parameters to the zoomed size,
    which isn't working.
Why don't you just use a Viewport node followed by a Scale node?
If your stills are generally larger than the output size (good practice), you could feed the image into a Viewport to fix the size at 1920x1080, THEN use a scale for your zooms and pans.

  • CS4 changing aspect ratio, resizing video

    Hello,
I've been working on a project at school for some time and am just now getting to the editing factor. My issue is about half way through editing it seems that its changed the aspect ratio from wide screen to a more standard ratio. I have it set to scale to the frame size. Just to clear a few things up they were all captured the same, all the original quicktime files are the same it's just once I import them into premiere that I start having issues. I really appreciate it, thanks

After uploading it to youtube the size gets so small you can hardly see it. My main goal with this thread is to get the video to actually scale to the frame.

  • Distorted Aspect Ratio of Exported Frames

My project's aspect ratio is 16:9 (720 horizontal, 576 vertical).
I inserted a clip into the timeline.
I exported a certain frame to a file as an image.
    The image file's size: 720 x 576.
I proceeded to import the image file into the project, and inserted it into the timeline.
The image's aspect ratio is not the same as the original footage.
Specifically, the horizontal side is narrower than originally (see attached screenshots).
    What causes this discrepancy?
More importantly, what can i do to get exported frames to match the aspect ratio of the project?

OK, I've got the BMP. When I looked at your images, I thought that we were seeing your still image on the Timeline. We are not. That shape/size is what was produced.
Now, remember that I am on PrE 4, so things will be different in PrE 8. Still, I should be able to get you close. In PrE 4, one uses File>Export>Frame to do a Frame capture under the CTI (Current Time Indicator), and visible in the Program Monitor. When you choose this, you will get the standard Windows dialog screen, where you name and locate your still image. There is also a settings button, that will open up a second dialog box, for you to adjust many attributes of your Frame capture. There, you will have three choices in the left-hand Pane: General, Video and Keyframe and Rendering. First, go to General, and you'll get File Type w/ a dropdown. There, you can choose the format type and should have JPEG, TIFF, BMP, TARGA and GIF (maybe more in PrE 8, like PNG?). I'd stick with TIFF or BMP. About the only other choice is whether you want to add this captured still in your Project, or not. That is your choice.
Go to the Video listing in that left-hand Pane. There you can choose the Frame Size, the PAR and the Color Depth. Make sure that these match your Project's and your source footage's exact specs. Unless you need the Alpha Channel, and are using either TIFF or TARGA, leave Color Depth to Millions of colors. Otherwise, choose Millions +, where the + is that Alpha Channel.
I'd guess that it's in those settings, as to what is happening with your Frame capture. Let me know if you get this sorted, and sorry for my mis-step, but I was not clear on what I was seeing, and where I was seeing it.
    Good luck,

  • Render changes aspect ratio

    Hey,
I am cutting a film about the history of cinema where I am using clips from all kinds of movies taking from dvd. Of course they all have different aspect ratios and most of them come in wrong so I change them with the aspect ratio slider. Now here comes the problem...once you change them they obviously need rendering and sometimes some of the clips which I corrected to the right aspect ratio then change back AFTER THE RENDER and are stretched or squachted again.
    Anyone came across this?
    Thanks

If it is to be shown on a high def screen 720x480 wont look any good unless its a dvd and you are able to upscale.
If its a high def projector the projector will still project it as 720x480.
If you want i to look good you need high def footage exported to high def.

  • How to crop without changing aspect ratio/Crop mode

Is there a way to crop in Lightroom without changing the aspect ratio? That is my first question.
My second question, is it better to use APS-C crop mode on my full frame Sony A7R if I know at the focal length I'm gonna crop, or just take it full frame and crop in the software? Are there disadvantages to this when it comes to uses flash's etch?
Third, Currently I do not have a portrait lens as the Sony A7R is new and does not have many lenses out yet. Until the 90mm lens comes out I was thinking I could use the Zeiss 55mm 1.8 in Crop mode for a portrait lens. That would make it around 88mm would it compress the background nicely the way an 85mm lens normally does for portraits?

This is what I usually do, now I know for sure my aspect ratio has been locked. As far as shooting in crop mode though, what I meant about that is this; For portraits, if you take a 55mm and shoot a portrait with it, the background doesn't look that compressed, which I like. Even if it's at a good F stop. It'll be out of focus, but not "compressed" And seems to show more flaws in the person. This is why with my Canon I always used my 85mm or my 100mm. I know some who will only use a 200mm due to this type of compression that happens at longer focal lengths.
If I was to shoot in crop mode, making it 88mm, would it give me that affect? The compressed look I get from a 85mm? Or would it simply just crop it like I do in post and not really make a difference.
Sony has yet to come out with a portrait lens and I need one bad, I've been offered little jobs here and there and can't take them because I don't want to disappoint them. I'm waiting for their 90mm, because that is close the 100mm and 85mm I shot with on the 5D for portraits.
Not to same the subject here but,  'Benjamin Root Photography,' has been a great help to me on this forum. I also torn between getting the 16-35mm F/4, or the new 24mm F1.4 prime, for wide landscape shots, because landscape and hiking is where I do most of my photography.
I don't plan on actually shooting a landscape at 1.4, but if it's 1.4 that means if I stop it down to F 8 on a landscape it'll be tact sharp. But it is not a Zeiss and is only going to cost 500. On the other hand, there is the 16-35mm, still I'd shoot around F 8 or even higher for landscape, the problem is, if it's F/4 won't that mean it'll have to stop down much further than the 24mm to get a sharper picture?
I don't guess I can go telephoto, like anything over 100mm because I have the A7R. People say over 100 mm it has shutter vibration, so at 200 or 300 I wouldn't buy until the A7R ii comes out. I'm not willing to get the regular A7 ii because I really like the advantage of having all those megapixels for cropping purposes, and it just plain looks better. Which is why I took my Sony A7 back for the A7R. Everyone was saying the photo's were more impressive than the 5D Mark iii's with the Zeiss 55 1.8 vs 5D with 50 1.4L. That wasn't really the case with the A7, but when I got the A7R I seen a HUGE difference in dynamic range.
I've heard the A7 is better at focusing than the A7R, but since I switched to the A7R I have noticed literally no difference. But I don't shoot fast moving subjects.
With both cameras I notice the face detection and EYE AF is hard to get to work properly. If I let it auto focus fully It'll focus on the wrong thing a lot of times even though the green boxes say the right thing.
So, I have been putting it on a single point, keeping it at the center, focusing on the eye, and then recomposing. That's mostly how I did with the 5D anyway. I never allowed it to choose focus points for me either.

  • Compressor 3.5 changes Aspect Ratio

I've been using FCp for years now making HD 1080i originals and using compressor to make H.264 deinterlaced QuickTime clips to upload. After the upgrade, none of my pre-established settings work as expected. The main problem is that the 16x9 aspect ratio has now changed. All of my compressed films are coming out very wide and stretched. I have played with several settings but can't seem to modify an old setting file or make a new one that provides consistent results. When I do stumble upon something that yields 16:9 like my original source the quality is nowhere near what I was getting prior to the upgrade. Is there a simple answer to this, like a new switch I am missing or is this a bug? I have been reading that compressing HD down to a SD DVD isn't as pretty as before either so I'm wondering if there's an underlying issue with the 3.5 upgrade or the latest OS upgrade. It seems like when I first upgraded compressor was fine, but I'm not sure I didn't compress many files. Now I'm up to OS 10.5.8 and for sure my aspect ratio is diferent than before. Any ideas??

Though it's nice to be able to export directly to Compressor, I've gone back to my old method, which works fine: I export as a "Quicktime Movie", making sure I am set to "Current Settings", "Make Movie Self-Contained" and do not "Recompress All Frames".
I then send this file to Compressor and run my "VimeoHD" preset and everything comes out fine.
The extra step is worth the reliability and troubleshooting factor. You also don't have to have both FCP & Compressor open at the same time talking to each other, which means you have more resources devoted to your compression.
I still wonder if this problem happens in FCS3?

  • Compressor Changes Aspect Ratio of Titles

In Final Cut Pro (6.0.6) I am editing HDV (1080) with a few titles. When I send the sequence to Compressor to export a file for Vimeo (1280x720), the video comes out fine, but the titles in the video are squished horizontally.
In FCP, my sequence is set to:
    frame size: HD (1440x1080) (16:9)
    pixel aspect ratio: HD (1440x1080)
    In Compressor, my settings are:
    encoder: Quicktime Movie (H.264, 5000kbps)
    geometry: 1280x720
I've messed around with different pixel aspect ratios and frame sizes in both FCP & Compressor. I've even changed the aspect ratios of my titles in FCP.
The only way I can currently make it work is to export the sequence as a self-contained QT movie and then send that to Compressor.
Does anyone else have this problem? Thanks.

  • Changing aspect ratio of copy protected videos?

I am attempting to watch a widescreen TV show I purchased through the iTunes store on my LG plasma screen. My usual setup is a digital video out and into the plasma using VGA. The screen in this mode only gives me two aspect ratios to choose from: 16:9 or 4:3. In 16:9 mode the image appears streched and in 4:3 mode I have black margins an boths sides of the screen. When I watch a widescreen video in 16:9 it is streched with margins at the top and botton and in 4:3 mode I have now margins left and right and top and botton. I therefore usually change the aspect ratio in Quicktime so that it displays correctly in 16:9 format on the plasma. Unfortunately the new TV shows in the store are not just copy protected but I now cannot even change the aspect ratio of a video anymore under "movie properties". So the only option I have is to use the S-video output of my old Powerbook and connect to the composite input of the plasma. While this gives me many more aspect ratio options (intrinsic to the design of the plasma) the picture quality is poor. So how can I solve this? I do not want to purchase Apple TV. I have everything hardwired and do not want to change that. I understand that the files need to be copy protected. However, Apple should enable me to change the aspect ratio of a video to be able to view movies at high resolution and without a distorted picture. Any idea how to solve this?

    Hi Sameer,
Thanks for your note, but the issue a bit different. Clicking the "fit page" and "fit width" allows you to change the zoom on the document, but the viewing area within the pod remains at a fixed ratio. So the document (unless the pod size is set at the same ratio) never fills the entire pod. Is this clear? I've added some screen shots to show what I mean more clearly.
As you can see, no matter what the zoom level is on the PDF (or if it's to fit width as the above screen shot), it's constrained proportionally (as I mentioned, I think it's at 4:3). Ideally, I'd like to get the PDF so it can fill the entire pod and zoom in and out. Is this possible with Connect?
    Thanks! Appreciate your help.
