AE composition: which format to save to reimport in a Premiere Project?

I am starting to learn the basics in AE CS3, and have a question about formats: my reference book states that once completed, the output from After Effect can then be exported as a "Premiere Pro Project", AVI, or MPEG2....
My question: Can I really save as a "Premiere Pro Project" if I am going to reimport *in* a *Premiere Pro Project* ? (Can a "project" be imported in a project" ??)... Or should I go for the .AVI (as the other clips in my Premiere Pro project ? (My understanding is that a "project" is not a "file", but a collection of files...)
Thanks,
Rob

>(Can a "project" be imported in a project" ??)
Yes it can.

  • How should i build and export a composition from After Effects to be dropped into a Premiere project

I've built a project in Premiere which i plan to burn to DVD. It's exporting at 1280x720. Pixel aspect ratio is 1.0. I'm exporting with MPEG2 setting.
After Effects won't let me make a project with 1.0 pixel aspect ratio, and it isn't letting me use MPEG2... it's giving me this medial 02 error...
    Help!

Well where should I start? AE will allow you to use square pixels. In fact the 1280 X 720 frame size is the HDV/HDTV 720 P preset and it's square pixels.
You don't set the compression until you render and, if you want the highest quality, you don't render MPEG formats of any kind using the Render Cue, you export them using the Adobe Media encoder. Where is After Effects telling you you can't use MPEG2??? How are you trying to get there.
If you are going directly to Premiere Pro (Which only exports or renders using the Adobe Media Encoder) you don't even need to render, you can just import your AE Composition into PPro.
Secondly, A DVD is not High Def in any form. DVD's are all 720 X 480 pixles (in NTSC countries). The only options are widescreen or normal.
Please read the sections on Rendering in the help files.

  • Which files to save prior to formatting?

    Hi there!
I am going to format Windows 7 today and I would like to know which files and folders I need to save for one of my premiere pro projects to be able to re open it once Windows has been reinstalled?
Do I need the preview files and encoded files? Or do I just need to save my .prproj file and place all my video in the same directories after the reinstall?
    Thanks for your help!

    >two partitions
If all you do is keep STATIC copies on the 2nd partition... if you try to USE that 2nd partition for any video editing task... VERY bad idea!
One hard drive has one set of read/write heads, and actually using a partition during video editing... for anything at all... is a HUGE drain on the drive
My 3 hard drives are configured as... (WD = Western Digital)
    1 - 320G WD Win7 64bit Pro and all program installs
2 - 320G WD Win7 swap file and video project files
3 - 1T WD all video files... input & output files
Search Microsoft to find out how to redirect your Windows swap file

Trying to use only ONE Hard Drive for Video Editing
You are a music conductor, with a baton that you use to point to various parts of the orchestra... this is like Windows pointing to various parts of the hard drive to do Windows housekeeping or to load program segments for various functions
Now, at the same time and with the same hand... while still using the baton to conduct the orchestra... pick up a bow and play a fiddle... this would be doing something with your video file at the same time as all the other work
You as a person cannot do both at the same time with the same hand
A computer is a LITTLE better, in that it can switch from one kind of task to another very quickly... but not quickly enough for EASY video editing
You need AT LEAST two hard drives (separate drives, never a partition http://forums.adobe.com/thread/650708?tstart=0 for more) with Windows (or Mac OS) and software on your boot drive, and video files on a 2nd drive so the boot drive is not slowed down by trying to do everything
I find that the three drives I use work very well for me, for editing AVCHD video... some people use a 4th drive, so video INPUT files are on drive three and all OUTPUT files are on drive four... I only bought a mid-tower case instead of a full tower case (my bad... but had to fit in the space available on my office desk!) so I use the three drives that will fit
Depending on your exact hardware (motherboard brand & model AND USB2 enclosure brand & model AND external hard drive brand & model) AND the type of video file, you may... or may NOT... be able to use an external USB2 hard drive for SD (Standard Definition) video editing
Steve Grisetti in the Premiere Elements forum http://forums.adobe.com/thread/856208?tstart=0 and Jim Simon in the Premiere Pro forum http://forums.adobe.com/thread/856433?tstart=0 use USB externals for editing
A USB3 hard drive connected to a motherboard with USB3 is supposed to be fast enough for video editing (I don't have such, so don't know) but eSata DOES have a fast enough data transfer for video editing... I have not used this eSata Dock... for reference only, YMMV and all the usual disclaimers

  • Change default format in "save as" file format window

I month ago I asked the following question...
"How do I change the file format order that is listed in the "save as" file format window? Instead of having "Photoshop" listed as the default file, I'd like to have JPEG at the top, then TIFF, PSD, etc. I have to constantly scroll down the list to find JPEG."
Recently while selecting JPEG in the "save as" format window, I accidently selected "Large Document Format" while holding down either "control", "option", "apple key", or "shift", or a combination of keys. Now the default format in the format window is "Large Document Format" (ext.PSB). I've changed the default from "Photoshop" which is still listed at the top, to "Large Document Format". I'd like to change the default to "JPEG" but I cannot replicate the correct key(s) to change the default format in the window.

    Hello TomGroup...
I did not receive a satisfactory answer to the question. Yes, you can go
into the Scripts but that is for experts and it is too much work.

    Any updates on this issue?
I have a similar situation in that no matter what I'm working on, when I
click "Save As' then the default format option is always .tiff    If I save
as jpg and then go onto my next file, the default is still tiff again when I
try to save  No matter what I try, tiff is also my default selection.  It's
just one of those things that takes a mere 5 seconds to click the dropdown
and select .jpg, but 5 seconds times a couple hundred files per day...it
    adds up.

    Regards,
    Akhtar Shah

    PS: I have tried a full unistall/reinstall.
Strangely enough when I reinstalled from scratch and launched iTunes, there were songs in my library, including those which I thought I had deleted earlier today. I am really confused.
I just want a simple, automated iTunes solution.
    I hate Windows.
FWIW if it matters, I'm using an HP Mini 110 (good bang for the buck and great for travel).
    Thank you.

  • Converting DV to ???.  Which format?  Aspect ratio problems.

I'm trying to digitize some old VHS videos for archival and I need some guidance. My goal is to keep a digital copy on disk and toss out the tapes with the player. Most of the videos will just be for future viewing, not further editing. I tossed out the TV a few years ago and I hope to never go back, so my primary viewing will likely be on a computer screen. If I do get another TV someday I imagine that I would play these videos with some sort of media center type device rather than a DVD so I may need to keep that in mind when deciding upon the final format.
I'm using a Canopus ADVC-300 to convert the videos to DV streams. I use iMovie HD 6 to capture the DV input. A few months ago I converted a few tapes with iMovie 08 and learned the hard way about the DV quality problems designed into that product. Anyway, the Canopus feeds my Mac a standard 720x480 DV stream. In iMovie I start a new project and tell it the video format is DV, as opposed to DV Widescreen.
Up to this point everything is working great.
My dilemma is how to save the video. I want a format that has good quality and will not likely need any future transcoding to stay usable. Thus far from iMovie HD I've been sharing to Quicktime, selecting Expert Settings, and then playing around with the various options within "Movie to Quicktime Movie".
On the video settings panel I'm going under the assumption that H.264 is the preferred choice. I set the compressor quality to high, the encoding to multi-pass, and the data rate to automatic.
The video filter panel has nothing selected for now.
The video size panel is where I start having questions. Obviously the original video sources have a 4:3 aspect ratio. If I leave the dimensions as "current" (720x480) I get a video that plays at 3:2 in every player I've tried. I guess that seems obvious even though I told iMovie I was working with a 4:3 project. My player of choice is VLC and I can tell it to show the video at 4:3 but it's a pain to do that every time. Quicktime can do that too, and in fact you can save the aspect ratio with the video so that it will display that way each time, but I never really use QT unless I have to.
Looking at the list of available choices in the dimension drop down box, it looks like there are a couple possible solutions...
The most obvious choice is "NTSC 720x480 4:3". When this option is used the video is 4:3 by default when played by QT. However, it still shows up as 3:2 in VLC, mplayer, and also when played via Frontrow. I downloaded mplayer just for this comparison and I never watch videos using Frontrow but I suppose I might someday if that media center thing comes into play. Once again I can tell VLC to show it as 4:3 but doing so every time is annoying. There doesn't seem to be any way to adjust the aspect ratio from within Frontrow so that's a non-starter. I'm thinking this might technically be the correct format to use but none of the players other than QT recognize the anamorphic setting (is that right?). When I look at the video properties in QT it shows 720x480(640x480) but the other tools show just 720x480.
The next obvious choice in the list of dimensions is "640x480 VGA". When I use this option I do in fact get a video that displays correctly in every player. However, I can't help but wonder if I'm losing resolution this way. I think it's just converting the rectangular pixels to square pixels but with the drop in horizontal pixels there must be less information there? Is this a viable format for playing on various devices in the future?
Should I be experimenting with something other an "Movie to Quicktime Movie" and H.264?
In all cases I've selected to deinterlace the video. Some might say that VHS is of such poor quality to begin with that using such high settings is a waste. I say that the source video is bad enough that there's no room to add even more degradation. I'm willing to live with data rates that will push 1-2 GB per hour of video. I think that's probably plenty to keep the video quality as good as can be considering the source. I'm just not sure which format is best for this purpose. It's a one-shot deal, once the conversion is done the tapes get thrown away so I'm a little anxious about making the right choice.

When choosing Export -> QuickTime Movie, you get a self-contained QuickTime-file of your sequence. The default video format is the same as your current sequence settings, which means you will get the exact same frame size an pixel aspect ratio in your QuickTime-file.
The best thing would be to use Compressor, but first you need to tell us what you are going to do with your QuickTime movie. Is it supposed to be a copy for the web? What video format do you need/want your movie to be exported in?
To letterbox your video in a 4:3 frame size, read about padding in the Compressor User Manual.

  • Which codec to save after editing in ProRes?

Hi ti everyone, at end of editing my footage in ProRes 422 (previous conversion of original footage shot with Canon HF20, Avchd 1080p, 24 Mb/s), I've some doubt about codec to use to save the movie.
I want to store the movie on the hard disk (no DVD becouse I will loose HD and I havn't BlueRay), so I need to use a format very similar to Avchd (High Definition, but not big file).
I try to set Compressor on h264, 1920X1080, max 30 Mb/s datarate, but conversion request very long time.
How is it possible? Conversion from Avchd to ProRes doesn't need a lot of time!
Which format I need? Compressor is the best app to to this?
    Sorry for bad english!
    Happy XMas

This request doesn't make any sense to me unless all you want to do is play the movie via iTunes/AppleTV.
If you are looking for something to visit again later and re-edit, h.264 is a waste of time. You'll need to go back to the original files and reconvert them to ProRes.
Even if you all you want is the output file to use as the basis for cutting a trailer, you'll need the original output in ProRes.

  • I have an external drive - WD My Passport FOR MAC. I want to format it to work on both mac and windows. Which format do you think I should use? Will either one cause damage to the files on the hard drive?

I have an external hard drive - WD My Passport FOR MAC. I want to format it to work on both mac and windows. I also want to be able to connect it to my TV and watch movies.
I read up and I think I am supposed to use exFAT or FAT32? I also saw MS-DOS. Which format should I should use? Will any of them cause damage to the files on the hard drive?
My little memory stick uses MS-DOS and it works on both mac and windows.
Please can you just tell me a little about each and suggest which one to use.
I know how to change it once you tell me so don't waste your time writing about changing it.

Will any of them cause damage to the files on the hard drive?
WARNING: FORMATTING A DRIVE ERASES IT COMPLETELY !!
If you need to carry large files (e.g., larger than about 4GB) back and forth, you may need ExFAT. Otherwise MS-DOS works for smaller files.
The Mac can Read, but not write Windows New Technology File System (NTFS) without an add-on program such as Paragon NTFS.

  • My disk drive does not play any original dvd or cd anymore, but the copies work fine, no matter which format. Do I need a new disk drive?

    Hello All,
since last week my disk drive does not play any original DVD or CD anymore, but copied ones, no matter which format work fine. I am a bit confused that the copied ones still work.
Anybody experienced the same? Will I have to get a new disk drive? Unfortunately the warranty expired last month
Looking forward to your answers and thanks,
    Yvonne

An external DVD drive from http://www.macsales.com/ may solve your problems.

  • Export to external HD in which format?

    Hi
New to i movie '09, and loving it !
I want to store my finished Projects on an external HD (but not the related Event raw material).
Which format will give me the best quality - space not a problem -for future viewing, DVD burning ?
Also how do I then delete projects and events from i movie ?
    Thanks

DVD would be the worst option, as it can really downgrade the quality.
Make sure you really want to delete the projects and events, gutsy move as you can never go back and edit your movie again.
but to answer your question, I like the quality of the Quicktime movie that iMovie makes when you "Share to Media Browser" and pick the "HD" setting. It can take hours/movie depending on their length, but they look quite good. It will make a 720p QuickTime .mov movie. This is actually higher than the 540 that your files are most likely in if you imported originally from your camera using the "Large" recommended setting as opposed to the "Full" setting (which is 1080).
Anyway, try making one and see how it looks. Once it is done you can find it inside the iMovie project's file. TO get there, go to Users Folder -> your User name folder -> Movies -> iMovie projects -> and find the project that you made the movie from. Right click on that file (or use the control key as you click on the file) and you will see a menu -> Show Package contents -> Movies and your 720p .mov movie will be in that Movie folder. you can drag it to your desktop and copy it to your external HD. If you really want to trash your events and projects after this is done (Watch the movie first closely to make sure it looks good), you can find them in that original "Movies" folder under iMovie events and iMovie Projects.

    Hi, Dwayne
This is the 'iTunes U Course Manager' community, which is is a very specific area and not for general iTunes questions.
You need to ask your question or start your discussion in the 'iTunes' community where you should get a better response.
    Hope that helps.
