AE Comps in Premiere

I've been cutting a project in Premiere with the intention of color-grading the final version in AE. While I go along I'll do the occasional effects shot using "Replace With After Effects Composition" then go back to Premiere and continue cutting.
The problem I'm getting is when I bring my Premiere timeline into AE to my grade, all my replaced AE comp clips are offline. The only solution I've been able to come up with is to replace each of the "missing" clips in AE manually. This negates the convenience of moving between Premiere and AE.
Anyone have any suggestions or am I just digging myself into a hole?

Hi Sam
The task actually can be accomplished in a bit different way though...
1. Cut and arrange all footages within PrPro so as to just build the desired timeline
2. Replace PrPro sequence with AE composition so as to apply final colour grading on it
3. Pre-compose every layer you would initially want to replace with AE comp
I completely understand that this workflow is much less convenient you wanted to get.
However, I don't know how to automatically (or within a couple of clicks) update the final AE composition if you keep on cutting clips in PrPro sequence...

  • Rendering AE Linked Comps in Premiere Pro Stops

Whenever I render AE Linked comps in Premiere Pro it stops, I go to the After Effects window and go back to Premiere Pro and it starts rendering again, I have to keep doing that in order to render the whole timeline... is there a way to fix this? I am using Mac OS Mavericks

You could pre-render in Ae, and replace the linked comps with the rendered file.
But, to get it working as it should, you probably will need to run the usual battery of diagnostics for your OS and Adobe products.

  • Not able to render After Effects comp in Premiere CC Pro using Dynamic Link

I've noticed that I'm not able to completely render a After Effects comp inside a Premiere CC sequence. The render bar goes about half way and stays there. I found I have to quit After Effects for the render in Premiere to complete. Is this normal?
I'm running Mavricks on the new Mac Pro.

    It's not normal on Windows.

  • Dynamically linked After Effects comps causing Premiere to freeze (after latest updates)

Normally in a dynamic link, any changes made in After Effects would be displayed in Premiere within a few seconds. However, after the latest software updates... it now takes 1-2 minutes and the Premiere interface is completely frozen during that time.
    Anybody else having similar issues?
    -Pete

Hi, thanks for the link but I'm having a different issue. My Premiere interface actually freezes and I'm unable to use Premiere for 1-2 minutes.
App Nap is disabled for all Adobe apps and I do frequenly empty my Adobe Media Cache and After Effects disk cache and it doesn't prevent the freezing.
Or sometimes just having a dynamically linked After Effects comp on the timeline slows Premiere down to the point where even scrolling through assets in my project panel is very jerky.

  • Issue using AE comp in Premiere

I am using an After Effects comp in my Premiere timeline but when I render it the glows become banded even when uncompressed. If I render from After Effects the glows look fine.

I exported the AE comp as a Tiff with Alpha image sequence and used that in my Premiere timeline and that gave me good results. It is too bad I have to render it twice to get it to work well.

  • CS 5 AE comps with Premiere Pro different in CS5.5

I just upgraded to CS5.5 this morning. I'd been working on a Premiere Pro project with imported AE comps for lower third titles. After the upgraded, those comps are no longer transparent -- they cover the underlying video tracks rather than just having a partial opacity lower third strip. I assume this has to do with an alpha layer problem? They were working perfectly before the upgrade, not working now. Anyone have any idea what's wrong and what do to about it?
    Thanks!
    Laree

I assume that by "imported AE comps for lower third titles", you mean that you are using Dynamic Link to import the AE comps directly into Premiere Pro, as opposed to rendering them to a file first.
We are investigating a problem in Premiere Pro CS5.5 and Dynamic Link that may be to blame for this.
Does your setup match the following:
The background color of the After Effects comp is not black.  (Not RGB 0, 0, 0.)
Hardware acceleration is enabled for Mercury Playback Engine in Premiere Pro.  (Project menu > Project Settings > General, Renderer is set to "Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration".)
If so, you may have tripped over the same bug we're looking at.  Sorry about that.  The cause of the problem is being investigated.
You can work around the problem by doing either of the following:
Change the background color of your comp to black. (RGB 0, 0, 0.)
Change the Renderer setting in Premiere Pro to Mecury Playback Engine Software Only.
If this problem doesn't match your situation, please elaborate on the contents and settings of your project, and/or post some examples for us to look at.

  • Dynamic Link AE Comps in Premiere

Is there a max number of AE comps that can be dynamicly linked in a single Premiere sequence?
    Thanks

    I have never found one.
I suppose that memory might be a limitation. While playing around with the concept of some limitation, I linked to some comps while watching my Resource Monitor. It didn't take long to get to over 10G of RAM in use just having Ae and Pr and my browser (Google Chrome) open. And it was just a 90 second sequence. I messed around a little more and it jumped to 15G. I have 32G so it was no real strain, but I can see where enough comps might prove to become a problem.
Worse comes to worse, if you ever found one, you could just render out the comp. I use Cineform, so loss of quality on export is not really an issue. Other codecs might begin to show wear and tear if you try that.

  • Can't apply transitions to After Effects comps in Premiere Pro

Hi people, newbie Premiere user here (my boss is trying to convert me from FCS) :-)  I downloaded the trial version of CS5 and want to learn as much as I can before my initial 30 days is up.  My initial experience has been pleasant, but I've come up against an obsticle I could sure use some help with.
    1)     Creating my timeline with serveral clips
    2)     Exporting certain clips to After Effects; 'Replace with After Effects composition'
    3)     Adding my effects
    4)     Back in Premiere Pro my clip is replaced by the comp.
    5)     Try to apply a simple cross-dissolve across 'Comp 01/Comp 02'
    PROBLEM!
Seems the transition will only snap to the start of the second comp.  With clips I can drag & drop the effect to span the clips and get perfect results, but not on an After Effects comp.
    6)     In Premiere Pro 'Effect controls' change parameter so that the transition centre is at 'cut'
The result indeed spans the clips, but the effect quality is terrible - decent fade from comp 01 to a sudden dip to black before fade-up on comp 02.
Yes, I understand the 'Layers' concept, but I'm not asking the software to do anything nonsensical, just a simple cross-fade across 2 comps.
I really would appreciate any advice anyone can offer, I'd really like to be converted (mainly because if I AM my boss has promised to buy me a licence when my 30 days are up!) :-)
    All the best
    Steve

To expand a bit on Colin's comments, back in the film days, the concept of Handles was easy to grasp, as the pieces of film were on an A and a B Roll, and the editor had to physically overlap them by the desired amount, so that the lab could print with a Dissolve. The same held for the days of A-B Roll digital editing, where the Clips were again physically overlapped on separate Tracks. Then, digital editors were developed that allowed one to edit with the Clips on a single Track, and where Transitions were applied between them. The Handles were necessary still, but were no longer visually obvious.
These images will tell you a bit more about the concept:
    Hope that this helps,

  • Audio playback problems on AE comps in Premiere

I have several AE comps in my Premiere CC timeline. The original clips where in the timeline and compositions where created by sending the clips to AE. Once back on the timeline the audio does not match up. The effects applied to the clips in AE is just time remapping and the audio does not match the ramped slo mo or it is repeating. Not all of the comps are doing this but the newer ones I make are.

no one else get this problem?

  • I HAVE to do smth wrong - new comp and premiere still lagging

    Hello guys.
Finally I bought new computer spec which is:
    i7 930 @ 3.6Ghz
    Gigabyte x58a-ud3r
    8GB of memory: G.Skill ECO @1600Mhz CL8
    GeForce GTX 460 @cuda hack
    Two 1TB Samsung F3 drives
    Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
    My disks are:
    WD Caviar 160GB (C:) for OS&Programs
    Samsung F3 1TB (D:) for Media/Project Files
    Samsung F3 1TB (E:) for Cache/Pagefile
The problem is, I've converted my 7D footage through mpeg streamclip to Avid DNxHD files, replaced the files in Premiere and in After Effects and what? There's no way I'd play the preview in real time :/ I got yellow bar but no way of playing it at least to the level when I can check my project before encoding it. Plus, encoding to FLV YouTube Speed options tooks 2.5hours :|
Am I really doing something wrong or what's going on?

    The
7D like other DSLR's record in the H264 codec which is normally
QuickTime unless it's flash. You can edit them natively in Adobe but the
compression ratio is as high as AVCHD which is another Mpeg4 based
codec like H264. You convert these files to Cineform if your system
cannot handle playback editing natively. Cineform's codec has a much
lower compression level which makes it far easier on the system to edit
and far less chance of artifacts when compositing or overlaying images,
video, or animation.  That is why you convert them. Also Quicktime has
not been updated as much as AVI so the performance is is not as good
    with the current systems.
    Eric
    ADK
So this is what I knew and what I thought. Still, thank You Eric for clearing this out
We came to the point when we are sure that cause of my problems is not the format, neither the codec.
I've ordered another 4gigs of RAM, will check it tommorow when they arrive.
Btw, is it good idea to install all my Adobe programs on disk D (Samsung F3) and keep other programs on C (WD Caviar 160GB)? I am asking that 'cause I got plenty of space on D and Premiere runs much faster when it's installed on D.

  • Premiere CC - media offline when working with AE comps

I am working with Premiere CC and using After Effects CC comps for some Keylight 1.2  keying within the project - AE comps created in Premiere via "right click" on clip saying "superseded by AE comp".
The After Effects project incl. all the comps and Premiere project saved locally - same location, local.
Till now editing (P) & keying (AE) worked without any huge problems - due to using 4k material I had some play-back problems - not worth mention it though.
    POSSIBLE REASON? When it started:
With both open - AE and Premiere project - I worked on the key in the AE comps. When finishing the keying I saved the changes - what normally works finw without asking me WHERE to save it.
Now AE asked me where I would like to save the project although it should have a location already - as I saved it before locally.
So I saved it with the same name and same location - overwriting the "old" project. That was when the problem occured...
    PROBLEM:
Now the Premiere project can not find/link the AE comps / project. Saying: Media Offline.
Although it displays the right path in the Premiere project window!
    TRIED THIS:
In Premiere I tried to "Link to media". Which will work for any three of the 20 AE comps!
At the 3rd or 4th one I try to link (automatically doesn't work here for some reason?) Premiere either hangs after a while or "changes mind" and finds no links anymore - even those I relinked just minutes before will have no connection anymore - again "offline"!
Nonetheless, the After Effects project works fine. No problems here (project has neither a long name nor blanks).
Any ideas what could be wrong? How can I relink the comps? I am really clueless.
    Thanks for any suggestions!

Mylenium basically answered your question: quit both applications, manually clean Media Cache Database, restart PrPro and let it rebuild Media Cache Database (reconform files). Other than that provide information about your disk setup. Since AE wanted to know where to save project file, it might for some reason lost connection...

  • After Effects Compositions Duplicating over other comps in Adobe Premiere.

    Hi all,
My issue revolves around Adobe Premiere and After Effects, in particular the feature in Premiere which gives you the option to 'Replace with After Effects Composition'.
I had severail clips I wanted to do some frame painting on in my timeline, so I started with the first, used after effects, all was fine. Did the same on the second one, again, all fine, then on the third one it all went a bit wrong. After completing my frame painting on after effects, I clicked save and then closed the composition. Upon returning to Adobe Premiere and viewing my timeline the clip I had just edited was as expected, but the previous one was now a dublicate of the one I had just edited. From this point forward no matter what I did every time I tried to alter a clip in after effects it just duplicated over the other clips.
Painting frames at the best of times makes me lose the will to live, but this glitch has made it almost impossible for me to work.
Other details, I save each After Effects composition with a different file name in a different folder. I tried all sorts of different ways around it but nothing.
Does anyone know how to solve this issue, or know where I could find out. It's incredibly frustrating when you spend 10 minutes painting out dust off a video to then realise the one you did before is now overwritten on the premiere timeline.
    I need help!
    Louis

Before you go back and re-do your tedious retouch...
you can try opening Pr, making your Ae comps offline, exit Pr.
Go to your 'Adobe Premiere Pro Preview Files' folder, delete all.
    Open Pr, relink your comps.
I've never really tried to send a series of clips to AE and edit them all as one composition, I'll give that a try.
    note:
Along with sending multiple clips via DL to Ae for touchup in one comp,
When I use 'Replace with Ae Comp' in the Timeline, I will save
the newly created Ae comp, exit Ae, return to Premiere and hit 'Undo'.
This will restore the original clips to the Timeline for future reference.
Then I will use File > Adobe Dynamic Link > Import Ae Composition to
bring the new comp into Premiere, add a new layer to the Timeline
and drop in the comp (or replace the clips in a duplicate Sequence).

  • Why would an After Effects comp be imported without the sound into Premiere?

Hi, everyone. I hope someone can help me out with this. Basically I have a comp with lots of .mts video files and .mp3 audio ones. AE crashes when rendering, blaming the MTS files. I don't fancy converting all the MTS to MOV (huge difference in terms of size), then replacing them with the new MOVs.
I was therefore hoping to be able to import the AE comp into Premiere and render from there. Rendering the video is not a problem, but for some reason there is no sound... Anyone know why this may be?
    I am working with CS4.
    Thank you!

You may not fancy converting the mts files, but you have to because you run AE 9.  If you had AE 10, you wouldn't have to do that.
And you should never, EVER use mp3 files in AE if you want a good-sounding audio track.  Or in your case, any kind of audio.  In fact, you should never use ANY kind of compressed audio.  Stick with wav and aiff files.
So quit wringing your hands and start convertin' them files!

  • How To Make an AE CS4 Comp Work In PrePro CS4?

(System is a Quad, 4GB, and 3 large HDrv's, none of which is over half full. Vista 32-bit with all updates. Latest nVidia driver.)
AE OpenGL status says every OpenGL feature is "Supported".
Made a 17 sec comp in AE CS4 with cartoon effect applied. The AE preview window has the desired look to it.
Objective is to get that 17-sec's useable in Pr CS4.
Both the AE comp and the Pr project are of the same dimensions (1920x1080), PAR(1), and fps(29.97), and the raw files in AE are of the ones that are in the Pr Project. In Premiere, cache is on C:, Scratch and Project on D:, raw files on E:
    1. From AE, render using the defaults for Render Settings (Best) and Outut Module (Lossless) - render dies before it starts with a sheep sound, no log or error msg. What type of error could make AE silently abort a render?
    2. From AE, render using custom settings to produce an output file that Pr should import (such as mpeg). Render completes. File does import into Pr but no effects are present, just the raw-file look. What possible setting could prevent AE from applying the effects to a rendered output?
    3. From Pr, import a Pr project that was made and exported by AE, and
    a) view it in the Source monitor, but source monitor displays only the first frame without any effects. Scrub the CTI, still only 1st frame. Is there something wrong with the Project made by AE?
    b) place it onto a new sequence. The Program Monitor remains blank. The timeline is pink. What does a pink item on a timeline in Pr indicate?
    c) Attempt to Sequence > Render Entire Work Area. It begins but says it'll take >20 hours (over 1 minute a frame). During this time Task Manager shows AfterFX.exe has constant page faults, thousands every second and sometimes as many as 30,000 to 40,000. Page faults imply insufficient memory. Does this mean 4GB of system memory is not enough for a 17-sec AE comp with Premiere? Is this something that can be done only with a 64-bit system and lots more memory?
    4. From Pr, import the AE project, which imports OK. However, results are same as 3. above.
    5. From Pr, attempt Dynamic Link with File > Adobe Dynamic Link > Import After Effects Composition. The AE project appears, put that in a Sequence. Results are similar to 3. and 4. above.

The Cartoon effect is twitchy somehow. It seems to resort to graphics hardware even when you tell it not to... Did you disable OpenGL in AE completely and attempt a render? If not, please try that first. Move the AE_OpenGL.aex out of C:\Program Files\Adobe\After Effects CS4\Support files\Plug-Ins\Extensions to a different location outside the AE install directory and see if the render goes through.
