AE CS 5.5 & Hyperdeck Shuttle DNxHD MOV files

AE CS5.5 (Win x64) will not read Avid DNxHD MOV files produced by the BlackMagic Design Hyperdeck Shuttle 2. All other software, including Bridge and Premiere Pro CS5.5 read the files fine. If I re-wrap the file with ffmbc and the only change is to reduce the 16 audio tracks (14 empty) to 2 or one, AE reads the file fine. PPro CS5 had a similar issue, which was fixed in the revision to CS5.5. See this thread from the Premiere Pro  forum:
http://forums.adobe.com/message/3888889
AE and PPro CS5.5 have two different versions/file dates of the Quicktime importer file (ImporterQT.prm), so the issue may have just been missed with AE.

I also have a BMD Intensity Pro, so I already have all their codecs installed. The only BMD codec that the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 software installs is a QT uncompressed codec, since the recorder is capable of producing uncompressed files also.
Here is a small Hyperdeck Shuttle DNxHD MOV file that someone posted and you can download it, if you want to check it out with AE. You will need to install the Avid codec package that is refrenced in my previous post. If nothing else, having the codec installed gives you a free intermediate codec (it will encode also) that is only lightly compressed (220 Mb/s), 4:2:2 and 10 bit.
In any case, the problem is specific to AE CS 5.5, since all other software works fine. Besides, AE CS5.5 will read DNxHD MOV files, just not those produced by the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2. I think I will file a bug report with Adobe. Thanks again.

  • GH2 and the BMD HyperDeck Shuttle Record Problems

    Hello All :-)
I have a BMD HyperDeck Shuttle 2 and it records uncompressed and in the DNxHD (220) codec.
I can import, play and edit the files just fine, but there's a major problem that makes the files useless.
Static scenes are fine except they are flat and require color correction to make them aesthetically acceptable.
The main problem is that the files have horrible interlacing problems... and I'll explain.
First of all, it doesn't matter whether I shoot in FSH, HBR, 24p or don't hit the camera record button at all and just record from the cleaned display... the same problem occurs, so it isn't a camera setting (I've spent 2 days experimenting with different cam settings as well).
When panning I get fine interlacing lines.  They are annoying and unacceptable in their own right, but it gets worst.  Once encoded (as in for distribution) the problem is accentuated.  Huge lines appear and and make the video look horrible... it is unusable.
On close inspection of the files in PP CS6 I can see that the file is filled with ghost images, which I thought were a result of duplicate frames that the GH2 has served to the BMD Shuttle 2.
I've read about certain fixes for this and a the color shift issues, but  a) most sound too difficult to be used in a practical workflow and at the end of the day, they may not even work.
So I'm here with hat in hand hoping that a discussion might yield some fruit that can help me, and others that are having the same problem or looking to use a Shuttle with their GH2s.
    Update...
I said that extra frames were being added, well I read that recording from the GH2's HDMI port added and deleted frames randomly, and that clouded my judgment and made me lean in that direction,  but upon closer inspection (I was going to experiment with manually removing the extra frames) I found that there are no extra frames per-say.
The ghosting I described is at the heart of the problem.
When panning each frame appears to be a combination of 2 frames at different times.  So depending on the speed of the pan (and the shutter speed - the higher the SS the closer together is the dual images) you get an interlaced image (half of the lines) at one point in time, and another (the other half of the lines) at a later point in time.
Where they overlap, the image is solid, but on either side you have a "ghost" image which when played back you can see through the image where the missing lines are, thereby giving a notched edge  effect.
And I haven't even wrapped my head around how I can fix that yet??
Thanks for your interest and feedback!!

    Hello Guys,
AS far as the signal I don't know what to believe.
Panasonic says that the new HBR mode is 1080/30p, but various video reporting tools reads the files as 1080/60i when recrding to the internal card.
I was told that no matter what setting you had for record mode, the HDMI spits out 1080/60i, yet others have said that you can get it back to 24p by using a pull down... but how can you get it back if the HDMI port is just putting out a signal from the sensor at 1080i without regard of the recording mode??
Anyway I ran a test just before I had to leave for an appointment, so I didn't have time to beat it up yet, but the results look promising!
Here's what I did:  I recorded to BMD Hyperdeck using it's built in DNXHD codec (doesn't matter what record mode) and in fact I never hit the camera's record button, I just took the raw signal comming out of the HDMI port.
Trust me, for this test I tried every setting and combination that I could think of and it didn't matter for this test what combination I used, the results were the same.
Then I conformed the video clip in my bin to Upper First.  That seemed to fix the problem as long as I was in PP CS6, however upon export the problem still occured.
Then upon export I chose progressive in media encoder.
That combination seemed to fix the problem, although I'm working on a project and haven't had time to do anything but glance at the resulting H.264 output file yet.
I'll do further testing and report back.
If this works it will illiminate the need to run the files through yet another program.

  • Canon C100 + HyperDeck Shuttle 2 + Adobe Workflow Question

    Hello Everybody,
I recently purchased a Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 to pair with my Canon C100. The C100 outputs uncompressed footage thru HDMI. I shot a film recently and I recorded uncompressed 10 bit 4:2:2 Quicktime files thru the shuttle. I need some help with the best way to edit/grade this footage. I searched all over the internet and I found references only to the DNxHD MXF file format or ProRes file format that the shuttle can do. Nobody seems to be using/discussing the uncompressed Quicktime 10 bit 4:2:2 workflow.
Restrictions: Workflow has to be Adobe + Windows
The C100 sends the 24p signal in a 60i wrapper and as a result the footage shows up as 29.97 fps.
    1. Removing Pull Down in Adobe After Effects?
What is the best way to do this? I can go to Adobe AE and Interpret footage. This is converting video from 29.97 to 23.976. Once this step is done:
    A. Do I need to render it and use the rendered file for further steps (Edit/Grade)? The original file out of the shuttle2 shows up as Quicktime 10 Bit Uncompressed YUV 4:2:2, Trillions of Colors. Do I need to render back to the same format or should I render to Uncompressed Avi (Internet is full of issues with QT on Windows). When I try AVI, it offers only Millions of Colors and not Trillions of colors. Will there be a loss in Quality? If I render to uncompressed AVI the file size is almost same as the original. If I render back to the original format (Quicktime 10 Bit Uncompressed YUV 4:2:2, Trillions of Colors) the file size decreases by 10% - 15% making me believe that there is some sort of compression happening.
    B. Do I just skip rendering and somehow send the footage over to Premiere for Editing, Speedgrade for grading and then output for delivery? This would mean sticking to the same file format that the shuttle captured. I am not even sure if this can be done.
    2. Removing Pull Down in Adobe PPro?
Is there any way I can remove pulldown in Ppro without having to go to AE? I see the Interpret footage option in Ppro. Even after I do it, the file properties still show as 29.97 fps.
Also, what would be the correct preset option in Ppro? I see a Blackmagic Capture
Any help will be greatly appreciated. The reason why I want to stick to the least lossy format is because I have a few shots that are underexposed and a few that have an incorrect white balance

Hi Jim... Yes :-). Foolish. Lesson Learnt.
But if you look at the questions, I guess they are general to Camera + External Recording setup rather than a specific brand?

  • Hyperdeck shuttle superwhite issues

I'm shooting f3 s-log material to a hyperdeck shuttle 2. I am finding that pro res and dnxhd clips are coming in to premiere and speedgrade with the superwhites clamped at 100ire. I have confirmed in resolve, FCP and apple color that the master clips are not clamped but in premiere I cannot get the clips to show full range.
I have tested DnxHD and prores formats from the hyperdeck, same results. I've tried both cs6 and CC, same result.
to reiterate, resolve shows full range, adobe apps are clamping it.
    Any help appreciated

  • Error 2048 under Windows 7 64bit when opening DNxHD .mov

    Hi people,
i'm experiencing a weird problem while trying to open a DNxHD encoded .mov file with quicktimeplayer under windows 7 64 bit.
getting the error 2048: "Couldn't open the file  because it's not a file that QuickTime understands."
filesize is 5,6 GB and im running Quicktime 7.7.5, the file was encoded using avid media composer.
Other (smaller, around 2GB) files from the same source and using the same codec will play back fine!
This file is running fine on my macbook (10.8.5), but will fail to play under windows 7 bootcamp or on my PC.
I've read about filesize-limits around 4 GB, is there some truth to that?
    thanks for your help
EDIT: i need to be able to play back the file with quicktime-components (not vlc or something like that)  because im working with protools, which is using quicktime for video-playback.

    Thanks for your reply nyc.
But the code i copied is in fact an extract of the USBDescriptors.c present in this directory.
If I try to execute this example, the result is the same.

  • Transcode .mov files to DNxHD using Media Encoder 6

I want to transcode .mov files (H.264 shot on Canon 5D Mark III) to DNxHD 175 for editing in Avid. I know that later versions of Media Encoder allow you to transcode to DNx. Is there a way to download the DNX codec to Media Encoder.
Is there a way to upgrade to latest version of Media Encoder without buying whole Creative Cloud monthly option?  I bought one of large Adobe software packages before they switched to Creative Cloud. I shouldn't have to pay for expensive monthly charge when I just paid hundred for software package.

No. All versions of AME are now on Creative Cloud.

Sorry if a Creative Cloud subscription won't work for you, but it's the only way to stay current with Adobe creative software.

  • Why can Premiere read DNxHD MOV's but not MXF's?

I'm in the process of moving from Scratch to Resolve.  From Scratch I've always exported DNxHD QT's as they have been the best balance of quality and file size (and Scratch doesn't offer DNxHD MXF output).  Resolve 8 will only export DNxHD MXF's (version 9 is supposed to add QT export) but Adobe suite can't read them.  To the best of my knowldge the MXF is just a wrapper, the contect is the same so why can't the CS6 suite read them?
    Item for the suggestion box?

I guess my question is:  Can Premiere/AME CS6 read DNxHD MXF files?
I am running Win7/64 with CS6 Creative Cloud.  I have the Avid DNxHD codec installed.
Both Scratch and Resolve are colour grading applications (see http://www.assimilateinc.com/  and http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/davinciresolve ).  Scratch would only output DNxHD QT's and Resolve will only output DNxHD MXF's.  I often output one set of files after post-colour but then use AME to transcode them many different ways (screening copies).  Adobe suite has always read the QT's but is not reading the MXF's.  My understanding is that the file types are both just wrappers and the content is the same so I am looking to see if there is an additional download from Adobe to be able to use the MXF's or if this is a feature request?

  • Adobe Premier Pro CS6 editing system and mov files

We have just installed a new Adobe Premier Pro CS6 editing system with a HP 820Z (running windows 7) 18 core multi drive system.  Our production company has used many mov. files from Ponds.  We were a FCP 7.0 studio (still have the system) but the mov files won't import to our new CS6 System...  Not trying to import from the mac...have them stored on another PC.  We depend on this stock footage for production. Do I need to download a converter?  I just had to produce two spots with a still background because I could not get any of our stock mov files to work...
    Thanks much for any help!

PP does support direct import of Quicktime files that can be played back on the system.
What is the correct error message after import?
Can you playback the files with the Quicktime Player?
For some codecs like DNXHD you have to install the quicktime codec first...

  • DNxHD 709 Files with Media Encoder

I have mutliple MOV Files with this codec.
I have to export them as MXF (XDCAM).
Media Encoder can not handle this color space so my black level is to high.
Is there a way to get it right there or must I go through Premiere or AE to adjust the levels and batchexport it out of this?

Let's try to sort it out:
    1. Non-'colour aware' (non-'colour manageable') application does not work in any colour space, rather in 'nowhere'. It does not apply any correction/transformation to colour data and simply transfers them from a media file to a display or in case of transcoding - to another media file.
Since waveforms are identical for both your source file and a transcoded one, you're not facing any glitches during transcoding. Therefore, feel free to transcode all your DNxHD MOVs into XDCAM MXFs via AME, if you want to.
    2.  In most cases you don't need to assign a specific colour profile to a video file. If you do, you should utilise colour aware application for handling them further in your pipeline (e.g. After Effects).
Meanwhile, sRGB, which might be the working space of your monitor, and Rec.709 are quite close. In gamma corrected environment you can hardly see any difference between them.
    3. If you feel the need to adjust anything from colour range to hue etc. etc., you should use your editing/compositing application, not just an encoder.

  • Error 8062 when I try to copy or move files on my macbook: "This operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8062)". Can even not install new software now!!

Since a few days when I try to copy or move files on my macbook, I often get an error message saying "This operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occured (error code -8062)". And then it just quits the copy or move.
I searched a lot on the internet, but only found solutions for cases you cannot empty the trash due to this issue.
I tried those solutions for my trash and that helped after some trying.
However, I still have the problem with copying and moving files.
I even cannot install new software now, as it has to copy itself to the programs-directory, and gives the same error-message.
    Who can help me??
Cannot seem to find any info on it on the support-forums or elsewhere.
    My user-account is administrator, I use a 13" Macbook Aluminium (Late 2008). Mac OS X 10.6.8 CPU 2Ghz Intel Core Duo, RAM: 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3.
Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Tips I received so far (thanks to A-Mac via Twitter http://www.a-mac.nl and Remco Kalf http://www.remcokalf.nl/)
    - make sure you have at least 10% of your harddisk in free space (I had only 5%).
    - do a PRAM-reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379)
    - perform a hardware test (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509)
    - make a complete backup (with for example Carbone Clone Copier, see http://www.bombich.com/)
    - after complete backup: use diskwarrior (boot from Diskwarrior DVD, first perform diagnostics, then perform "Rebuild" which rebuilds your file directory).
So far I only cleared up some space on my HD, and already the problem occurs less.
Still, I will go through the other tips too.
    (will post progress)

  • No thumbnails or playback of MOV files in Adobe Bridge CC

    Hi
I recently downloaded and installed the latest version of Bridge from the Creative Cloud and I am unable to view thumbnails of .MOV files taken with an Apple iPhone5. I am able to open the file but there is no audio or video in the playback. Anyone else have similar issues? I am able to view these same files in Lightroom CC fine. I am using Windows 7 64-bit. Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Only thing I can think of is there must have been some kind of mixup in
the transfer process. Here's what I did: I plugged her phone into our
Macbook Air at home and transferred her stills and movies off from her
camera (using iPhoto) to a connected portable hard drive. From there I
copied and pasted the files onto a removable thumb drive. From there I
brought them to work on my PC and copied them off to a portable hard drive
there. Seems to me the MOV files got lost in translation somehow. It's
possible I didn't do this correctly? I know with MY iPhone images and
movies I copied them directly from my phone onto my computer (PC) when it
showed up as a device in my device listing. It wanted to use iTunes for
this but I bypassed iTunes and did it the old fashioned way. These are the
files that I am able to view correctly on my PC at work in Bridge. So I
guess I need to recheck my workflow here.

  • Unable to import movie files from iphoto '08 into imovie HD

I have recently bought a 2008 macbook (2.2 GHz) and have recently downloaded imovie HD in addition to owning iLife '08 due to its extra capabilities. I have found that I am unable to import any of my movie files from my iphoto library folder as it seems to need to open the actual iphoto application before the files can be accessed. In addition, when not using any specific program it would be nice to be able to access my photo/video files within the iphoto folder without iphoto automatically opening as the default viewer.
    Any ideas??!! Thanks.

.. and I import AVI video clips directly without converting to .dv, without problems.
lucky you.. .avi is just a container, no 'format'/codec .. I can show you dozends of .avis, which will NOT import into iMHD6, due to being playback-codecs, not convertable by the underlying Quicktime engine into separte, editable audio+video streams ..
.. If you convert to .dv, the size just blows up.
dv is 13GB/h and a codec meant for editing; e.g. it stores every frame (video=30 frams/sec) of a recording, as mpegs usually doesn't do so.. = your Mac has to estimate content, when converting and 'recovering' the content = lossy process.
iMHD6 is a dv-editor; the mpeg4 feature is only a toy, to spice up iSight recordings.. for sure, the QTengine can convert a lot, but too much conversion (from one lossy codec, e.g. divx, into another, e.g. mp4) means a (dramatic) loss of pic quality..
    my 5€ cents ..

  • Voice Memo .mov files lost in iphone Limbo

    Hello.
After doing some research it appears that:
There is a bug with iphone (mine is 3g) that when voice memos are recorded they are recorded as .mov files, and then converted to .m4a.
I assume this is because .m4a is a more complex algorithm and the little iphone processor can only record .mov on the fly.
The issue is that if the iphone is interrupted in this process, you will have a voice memo that goes for 0 seconds and a .mov file on your iphone taking up space.
I noticed in iTunes that i had 3.9 GB of "Other" taking up space on my iphone. After using third party software, i looked into the files on the iphone and found that most of this space was being taken up by files in my "recordings" folder. I went into 'voice memos' on my iphone and individually** deleted all the voice memos (after backing them up) and freed up a significant amount of the 3.9 GB. However, there are still 1.2 GB of .mov files still taking up space on the iphone, and I cannot find a program that will let me delete the files (write to the iphone hard disk) and the iphone itself cannot recognise the files!
It seems the only way to delete the files is to Jailbreak. I don't want to jailbreak the phone, simply because i believe that when you pay for apple products, you are paying for a product that 'just works'. In other words, they have done all the trouble shooting and tweaking of things to make it all work seamlessly. Jailbreaking reopens the can of worms of software clashes, and you get back into the land of using a windows style system.
Does anyone have a way around this?
    I have iPhone 3g and Macbook 2.4ghz Core2Duo.

They won't sync back to your phone as far as I know. You can sync them from your phone to computer to listen to them in itunes. If you delete a voice memo on iPhone, it isn’t deleted from the Voice Memos playlist in iTunes. However, if you delete a voice memo from iTunes, it is deleted from iPhone the next time you sync with iTunes.
    You might try this:
In iTunes, select the voice memo you want on your phone, go to “Advanced” and select “Create MP3 Version”. See if you can sync that back to your phone.

  • Quicktime does not convert my .MOV file into a watchable format on Quicktime

    Hi guys!
I won't give you all a long sob story but basically, I went to my first music festival over the weekend and uploaded my videos onto my friends computer, I then uploaded these videos (i took with my iPhone) to Google Drive. When i got back onto my own computer, I download the .MOV files from Google Drive, these videos would not convert into a watchable format. It gives me the message -

It says that Quicktime should support MOV files. I am using version 10.3 Quicktime player with iOS Mavericks. I really want help with this issue as I will be devastated if these videos are lost. My friend obviously deleted them off his computer because they did take up alot of space!

iPhone recorded files should already be compatible QT X v10.3 (and QL) as is in the MOV file container. However, the process of downloading, uploading, and again downloading the files may have created some sort of issue causing QT X to not properly "recognize" the content and thus, wants you to check for additional support.
In any case, will the files open in any other media players? (E.g., VLC, MPlayerX, NicePlayer, QT 7, MPEG Streamclip, etc.) For instance, if the files open in QT 7 Pro, MPEG Streamclip, or VLC, you may be able to copy the data to a new MOV file container which QT X will open and play. (I.e., this procedure does not recompress the data and is reasonable quick. Also not sure if using the "Command-D" Finder option to "duplicate" the file will create a "readable" file or not but you might try it.)
