AE CS3 inconsistent colors - HDTV (Rec. 709) color preset is bad?

I have 2 sets of known-good SMPTE colors bars generated from Avid - SD and HD. In AE, with Simulate Output turned on, the displayed black level of the HD bars is twice as high as the SD. They should be identical.
I created 2 projects for each clip:
In SD:
Working space: NTSC SDTV
Clip Interpret footage: SDTV NTSC 16-235
Use Display color management
Simulate Output -> SDTV NTSC
HD:
Working space: HDTV (Rec. 709)
Clip Interpret footage: HDTV (Rec. 709) 16-235
Use Display color management
Simulate Output -> HDTV (Rec. 709)
The rightmost PLUGE bars of both source files are the same value, and as per SMPTE standard should be just barely visible on a properly calibrated monitor.
However, with Display Color Management on, the SD pluge reads 10 (on an 8-bit scale), while the HD reads 19 (almost twice as bright). This is manifested visually, the SD pluge is barely visible as it should be, and the HD pluge is considerably brighter. It's easily noticed via screen grabs too:
My display is calibrated, and that's irrelevant anyway - the pixel value that AE shows should be the same for both comps.
Has anyone else noticed such an issue? Is this a known bug in AE CS3? Or am I missing something?

I installed AE CS 5.5, went through the same process - same exact thing.
Maybe you or others could repeat this little test on your system. I can supply you with a couple of 80KB TIFFs.
By the way the project working space makes no difference between SD and HD, it's the HDTV Simulate Output preset that seems off.

Does EACH document have the SAME definition of NewColor1? Having the same name does not imply that they are the same definition.
Try opening the first document in the book. Then select all the documents in the book file and import the color definitions from the opened file. This will make all the documents have the same definitions as in the first document.

After Effects rendering with Format MXF OP1a 1080i/25, XDCAM with colour space "HDTV (Rec. 709) 16-235" but after rendering the colour space is "30-217"

I have a very annoying problem in After Effects. I'm making an Animation with the format "MXF OP1A, Codec XDCAMHD 50 PAL (4:2:2)" with 8-Bit and with the colour space "HDTV (Rec. 709) 16-235" but after rendering the colour space is not 16-235, it is 30-217 RGB. After I activate the colour space in After Effects, then it shows the right values, but after rendering the value for white is 217 and for black is 30. Hopefully someone can help me. Inconsistent color definitions

Hi, all,
I have a problem concerning inconsistent color definitions when I print a book file on the Linux system.
The error message says:
Color definition: Color8 is inconsistent
This may relate to the fact that this .fm file is copied from Windows version FrameMaker file.
How can I solve the problem?

The message means that a color named "Color8" is defined in
more than one of the files in the book, and that the definition
differs between the files. This could be highly undesirable if
the color is being used and you are doing color productions.
The remedy is to make all color definitions the same in all
files by importing color definitions to the entire book.
BTW, the message is a warning and should not prevent you from
printing the book.
If you're familiar with the files in the book, and you feel
confident that "Color8" is not used for anything important,
and you're not doing high-quality color productions, then:
1. In the book window, select all the files in the book.
2. In the book windows, select File > Import > Formats
3. Deselect everything except "color definitions"
4. At the top, select the file you copied from Windows in
"import from document"
5. Click "import"
6. Save all files and try printing again.
If you're not familiar with the files and you're not sure if
"Color8" could be used for anything important, you should
either consult with someone who designed the files, or at
least select one of the other files in the book to import
colors from. In this case, find a file in the book that contains
the color "Color8" (use View > Color > Definition). Once you've
found such a file, follow the instructions above and use this
file to import colors from.
Even better is if you have access to a template file for the
book that contains all definitions of formats. Then open that
file in FM and use it to import from.

Rec 709 colorspace

I have a color management issue.
I am using a Windows based version of Photoshop CS2, is there any way to set the color working space to be (or possibly imitate) HD rec. 709 I think CS3 has these types of options in the color space area, but I don't know if it is possible in CS2.

C 300 has XF Utility LUT changes recorded video on TV gamma. It's ok

Free color preset plugins

does anyone know of any free coloring preset plugins for fcp that do similar to what magic bullet or film effects? i would like to be able to achive thos preset color styles with out havting to adjust every atribute manually in fcp?

Magic Bullet, as you know, has presets. Film Effects from nattress.com has a bunch too, and is a great tool for only $100.

Can't apply color presets to multiple clips in timeline.

When I try to apply a color preset to one selected clip in the timeline, color board lets me do that but when I select two or more clips CB disappears. The manual says I should be able to do this so I wonder if I have missed something simple, or is this a bug? Sorry if it's been covered already but a search didn't bring anything relevant up. Thanks in advance.

Copy the corrected clip, then select the others and press:
Alt + Cmd + V

Inconsistent color values across CS3 apps

I am using CS3 on a 2.66 quad core Intel Mac running 10.5.8.
I am working with an InDesign file with many links. When I click the edit link button on the links palette in InDesign my image opens in Photoshop just as expected. I use the info panel in Photoshop to take a color reading and decide I need to edit. Any adjustment items (Levels/Curves) that I open cause the readout in the info palette to jump, both the before and After readings. I have a c:1, M:1, y:1 turn into a c:10, m:8, y:8.
If I open the file directly from the server or from my local desktop into Photoshop, This problem does not exist. The values stay the same until I actual make an adjustment.
I have restarted. Same problem. I have deleted all preferences for Photoshop, InDesign, & Bridge. Same Problem.
My admin logged in under their name and this problem disappeared.
Does anyone know what setting or preference I need to change/eliminate to stop this problem?
My biggest concern is that my final files will have some issues on press as a result of this.

Problem solved.
1. Go to the correct folder to get the image.
2. destroy attached profile.
3. rejoice over minor victory.

CS2 Bridge vs CS3 Bridge = Colors don't match

I was wondering why a JPG of eyewear with clear lenses shot on a white background and which have no color cast whatsoever displays with a light pink cast in Bridge 2.1.1.9 and displays it's normal 'neutral tone' in Bridge 1.0.4.6 ?
The folder they're in has both CMYK and RGB (sRGB) versions of the same product shot and only the RGB ones display with a noticeable pink cast in CS3 Bridge. High quality thumbnails is turned on and when I open the image in PS10 it's fine. The lens' RGB value in the affected area is neutral and pretty close to 232/232/232. There are no color casts anywhere.
As a test I just created a 232/232/232 box on a white canvas and saved it as a JPG. I've discovered that if I save it as a progressive JPG the 232/232/232 box displays as light pink on a white background in Bridge 2.1.1.9. If I save it as a Baseline (Standard) JPG it does not have the false pink cast. The same test images all display correctly in Bridge 1.0.4.6.
Is this a known issue or something particular to my system?

Although HP does not support Photoshop, I was able to find something that might help; How to Convert RGB to CMYK in Photoshop.
If you can print from other programs without any issue, then you might consider contacting Adobe for help adjusting your color settings further.
You can also use the following document to ensure the printer is not at fault; Fixing Print Quality Problems for the HP ENVY 5640, 5660, 7640 and Officejet 5740, 8040 e-All-in-One....

ILLU CS3 CMYK Colors print wrong from placed layered psd, flattened ok. Why?

Hi all,
I searched the help, faq, kb and forum. No success, so I hope someone out there has some advice for me.
Environment:
Illustrator 13.0.2 (CS3), Photoshop 10.0.1 (CS3) on WinXP SP2, color management enabled (same settings in each CS3 app), printing on calibrated Xerox DC250 (PS-RIP), ISO Coated simulation profile.
The problem:
When placing a cmyk-psd with layers and embedded color-profile in AI 13 (cmyk-document) and printig, the colors do not look like they should. When I flatten the psd in Photoshop, place it again in AI, everything's fine. But why?
On screen, every psd looks the same.
When I place the same PSD with layers in AI 12.0.0 (CS2), there's no problem with the colors.
Is there a need to flatten PSDs in AI13?

Nope, if you put a raster image into something, it stays raster in the EPS.
Try to save the file as a PDF and see if that works better. That is the preferred format for newspaper ads, and many places still refer to it as an EPS.

CS3 - Bridge Smart Object image to CS3 & Lab Color

I open an (NEF) image in Bridge, do some work, and open the smart object in CS3. When I go to Lab Color I get: “Changing modes can affect the appearance of smart objects. Rasterize smart object before mode change?” I don’t want this, correct?
After I choose “Don’t Rasterize” this dialog window appears: “Merge layers before mode change?” I choose no.
Within Channels (Lab Color) I go to delete “A” & “B” because I just want the Alpha Channel. However, I get “Flatten Layer?” and when I choose “No” I can’t delete “A” & “B.”

I found my error. I was highllighting the layers not clicking the eye icons off and on.

Bridge CS3 Manage Color Help menu wrong

The Help menu says-
Preferences (Mac OS), and click Advanced.
Select Enable Color Management In Bridge.
HOWEVER, the options I get when I go to Preferences and Click advanced DO NOT have Select Enable Color Management in Bridge as an option, see enclosed screen capture of the Bridge Preferences.
Color is going very wrong on my Xerox DocuColor 240, so I'm reviewing the color workflow from input to output.I have already downloaded and installed profiles spefic to my Doc 240, however, I'm having trouble figuring out how best to make use of them. Information as to the interactions between ColorSync and CS3 would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, that is not helpful anymore:P . That only applies to the original 2.0.0 build. The preference was removed and color management is On for all updates (2.0.1 - 2.1.1) when applicable. Draft thumbnails are not managed, along with some formats. This option also only described on screen display and has no impact on print output.
You will probably have better luck asking in the application forum that covers your printing output application, and or image editing/compositing application. Or maybe try the Color managementforum.

CS3 PMS Colors Inaccurate...

i originally created some artwork in CMYK, the printer suggested i make it a 2 color job to get better color (some of my cmyk colors were out of their press' gamut).
Since i don't have a Pantone's Tints Book, i had to rely on photoshop for matching the CMYK version to pantone equivalents.
For some reason, photoshop isn't displaying PMS colors as accurate as Illustrator.
In photoshop, the Spot Channel version matches pretty close to the CMYK version, but once it is placed in illustrator it's obvious that it doesn't match the CMYK version at all. Which is weird because when i place CMYK photoshop files into illustrator they match perfectly.
I am using the same color settings across CS3 (set in bridge).

If the are CMYK, they are, by their very definition, within press gamuts. If your colors are out of gamut, they've been defined in some other color space, such as RGB, which has a considerably larger gamut.

You need to purchase a current Pantone spot color to process swatch book. If you are doing work for print reproduction, it is as important as a calibrated monitor. If nothing else, it will quickly show you which colors will and which colors will not be accurately translated to standard four-color process colors.

You do not have your color spaces synchronized across your CS3 apps. If you are using the same-level versions (particularly CS3), this is easy to accomplish in your app's preferences. Or you are using different color spaces for your different images.

Printing with Epson/PS CS3- missing color sync options

When I try to print images from PS CS3 with my Epson Stylus Photo 2100, my print-box doesn't give me option "Color sync" anymore. I used to be able to choose whether to use Color sync or No Color management. I have downloaded all the latest drivers I have found from epson, but no help.

What OS version, driver version?
CS3 was one strange beast when it came to printing. Seems it had elements of both Apple printing paths and depending on what OS version and driver version you are using you will get different results. I have no trust what so ever printing from CS3.
It does seem on a box running 10.6.3 and CS3 here that the 8.19 driver for the 9600 is working correctly like a application using Apple's new print path when PS Manages Color is selected. In the driver under Color Matching, ColorSync is correctly grayed out and under Print Settings, Color Settings is defaulted (grayed out) to Off (No Color Adjustment. This is the correct behavior.
Now if you're trying to use Printer Manages Color, in the driver under Color Matching, Epson Color Controls is incorrectly grayed out and there is no way to choose ColorSync. If this is what you are talking about you should try PS Manages Color. This happens in CS3 and CS4. In CS5 when choosing Printer Manages Color, in the driver under Color Matching, nothing is grayed out and and you can choose ColorSync. Just maybe Adobe and Epson have finally caught up with Apple's new printing path, but then again this could still be a moving target.
