AE CS4 editions (and Snow Leopard)

From everything I've read, AE CS4 (if updated to v9.0.2) is compatible with Snow Leopard v10.6.8. I have the option of purchasing a pre-owned and de-activated edition of AE CS4 with a legally transferrable license. The case holding the two discs does not say Professional anywhere on it nor does the install disc. Does that mean it's a standard edition? Also on the back of the case, on the sticker bearing the serial numbers (it comes with Color Finesse),  it says AFTER EFFECTS ED. Does that mean that it's an Academic (educational) version? On the case of my CS3 version, while it does say Professional on the case and disc, there are no letters after "AFTER EFFECTS" on the sticker on the back. Hope someone can shed some light.

If you are going to purchase something, I'd suggest at least CS5 (version 10) since it's 64-bit and works with today's more powerful computers much better. Another thing to note is that modern plugins are written in 64-bit and they won't work with CS4. (Also, CS5 handles things like MP4's much better than CS4 did.)
Basically, in my opinion, CS4 is just too old and outdated to be worth anything (unless you're paying less than $100 for a full version).
I know some people have had issues with version 13, but I know version 12.2 works really well and is a relatively inexpensive monthly cost.

  • Dreamweaver CS4 Crashing under Snow Leopard

I am having issues with Dreamweaver CS4 and Snow Leopard. Dreamweaver application opens fine, however, when I try to make edits to code on an HTML page, the program crashes.
    Background info:
A Clean install of Snow Leopard was made on a new hard drive on my Intel Mac G5. (OS 10.5.7 Leopard is still loaded on another hard drive).
Adobe Creative Suite was then installed on the Snow Leopard drive.
Any feedback to try and work around this issue will be greatly appreciated.

I spent the whole holiday weekend troubleshooting this on my MBP. Dreamweaver would crash mostly in system dialogues but sometimes randomly.
    What didn't work initially:
    1. Clean install of SL but when it finished, I migrated my old user account minus apps.
    2. Installed my usual apps and immediately had crashing at system dialogues with Dreamweaver CS4 and a few others.
    3. Hit all troubleshooting blogs and forums including adobe and apple. Tried all the cache flushing, preferences rebuilding, plist deleting til the cows came home. Nothing was working.
Luckily I had carbon copy cloned my leopard install to a firewire 800 drive for a back up so I always had a way back but figured I would try it again.
So here's what did work for me:
    1. Wiped my drive, installed SL cleanly, and upon completion I did NOT migrate ANY user settings from other computers or previous systems.
    2. Installed CS4 first thing and tested. It worked straight away so I did a time machine backup and started adding other apps and bringing folders over by hand all while doing intermittent testing and time machine backups in case I hit some snag that started things crashing again.
    3. I had iSynced my mail, address, calendar, bookmarks etc so that helped ease the pain of not migrating somewhat.... so I resynced everything back as a last step.
    4. And Voila. Been enjoying rock solid performance for several days since...  and zero crashing... even under intense use.
A little manual? Yes. Should it have been necessary to go to this length? Probably not.
But I will say my MBP is snappier than ever and everything is running tip top. So if you have the time, I still recommend doing it. Plus doing it a little manually helped cull my drive of a lot of crap I don't use or need anymore.
If you want pure automation and no maintenance maybe wait for an update.

  • Using ms office 2008 for mac home & student edition with snow leopard serv

    Hi all,
I have a very particular question.
I have a new small business starting up and we want to make full use of leopard and snow leopard server in our infrastructure. We also want to use os x for all our client machines.
We want to use ms office 2008 for mac as our main offfice software but i believe we don't need all the uses or festures of the business edtion and i need to seek good advice and clarity on this.
We won't ever use any microsoft exchange servers but instead willl use the apple mail servers and all the other apple server services.
My question is, based on the fact that we will have an all apple mac os x backend and client frontend but want to use the ms office for mac as our business software, and also based on the fact that we wont use the "Build your Brand clip art, Build your skills by lynda.com, the Remote Desktop for mac 2, the Microsoft Exchange Server Support and the Microsoft Windows sharepoint services support, do we really need to go for the business edition? Can we not just use the home and student edition and get the same functionality using everything else apart form what we listed as we wont need these?
The other question is, the Entourage 2008, Web services Edition, will this work with an apple backend instead of ms exchange server?
Kind regards and thanks for your wise advice,
    Neil Watson

    Thanks, Kurt--I understand now.
One reason I was alarmed was that evidently when the tech installed Office 2008, something went awry with either the key installer or the key code, because when I finished the first two updates (12.1 and 12.2), I tried to open Entourage to see if the problem I'd been having was resolved. Instead of opening, Office gave me a message that my product key was invalid!  I did find the product key, and called the tech, who will come by to see what's wrong (he's an honest guy, so I'm sure it's a legitimate error of some kind, not a pirated copy). But the thought of installing two pages of updates and maybe running into the same glitch every time made me blanch.  So I'm glad to know that Microsoft is still doing Service Packs for 2008!

  • Aperture 2 and 3 and Snow Leopard

My system with Aperture 2 was perfect.
Then I believe that Snow Leopard killed Aperture 2.
When I first installed Snow Leopard my machine felt like new again but slowly and slowly over the last few months the whole system seems to feel less and less snappy.
I don't use many video-intensive applications - my main one is Aperture 2, so this is where I find my main cause for concern.
Painfully slow adjustments with lagging, beach-balling, CPU-hogging, and RAM theft.
The main culprits seem to be Highlights/Shadows, Straighten, Crop, and Retouching… although my open mind says that could simply be because they form the latter part of my tweaking process.
There seems to be a thumbnail generation issue. Every adjustment that is made generates a new thumbnail - as you work through your tweaks that process seems to get backed up and slow everything down.
There seems to also be a video issue. Tweaking horizontal photos in full screen causes twice as much lag as a vertical image. Why? Take a look - it's obvious - in full screen edit a vertical image is about half the size of a horizontal one.
There seems to be a memory issue. Aperture seems to use a large amount of processor and RAM and sometimes doesn't let go of it or it gets caught in some kind of a loop. I've no idea what I'm talking about here. All I know is when I look at Activity Monitor the numbers are going through the roof and I can barely concentrate on them because of the noise from my fans.
There have been various and quite diverse suggestions on this and other forums as to what the underlying problem is and I have done my best to look into those and see what can help.
    I have an early-2008 MBP 4,1 - 2.6 Intel Core 2 Duo - 4GB (factory-fitted) RAM - GeForce 8600M (512MB) GT.
I have done everything possible: all software totally up-to-date, re-installed combo updates, rebuilt Aperture libraries, run consistency checks, fresh Aperture install, fresh Snow Leopard install, repaired permissions, booted in 32bit, booted in 64bit, run hardware tests, deleted plists, cleared caches, downloaded and run applications like Onyx and Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner (amongst others) to ensure everything is in ship-shape along with various test applications to gauge if components like my hard drive are dying.
I keep my system clean and tidy. I have now stripped out bloat. I even took out iPhoto in case its 'iLife' browser link to Aperture was an issue. I have 85GB free on a 200GB. All components are original as factory-fitted by Apple.
Everything that any seemingly intelligent person on any decent forum has suggested has been done - in particular I thank the many users here on the Apple forum for all their information sharing… I try to read them all.
From what I see on the forums, I am not alone.
    Nothing has fixed this problem.
I (and no doubt many others) have fed this information back to Apple.
Aperture 2 and/or Snow Leopard has a problem that has not been fixed.
Aperture 3 got released and I trialled it and swiftly uninstalled it because the exact same problems are there - even with one single photo in it.
My concern is that Apple will not fix the cause of the problem which seems to lie outside of Aperture.
If Apple concentrate on making Aperture 3 work better inside a possibly shaky Snow Leopard then I will be very disappointed.
I'm not forking out for a new version of software just because Apple broke my current software. Don't get me wrong - I do actually WANT to buy Aperture 3 because it has functional improvements and advancements that I would love to be using providing it works properly - and for me (and it appears for 'quite a few' others as well) it just simply doesn't… and neither does Aperture 2 any more.
I am no technical expert (as you've probably noted already) but a MAJOR bug seems to lie in the relationship between Snow Leopard, graphics cards, and the way it handles memory - and so in turn graphically-intensive applications like Aperture are high-lighting these problems more than others.
I am sure there are people without these problems. Perhaps these problems relate to specific hardware configurations. My configuration is Apple standard. I really shouldn't have these problems.
Until Apple fix this major bug I cannot remotely consider Aperture 3.
Until Apple fix this major bug I could never buy Apple again.
Up until Snow Leopard you had a VERY happy camper. I had a perfect machine and I was shouting Mac from the rooftops to anyone that would listen.
And then it seems Snow Leopard broke my machine.
    What a shame.
I really want to use Apple, I actually really like Snow Leopard, I really want to use Aperture, I really want to carry on telling people how wonderful the Apple Mac experience is (or was...) but Apple are currently making it very difficult for me to continue doing so.
    Please fix Snow Leopard.
This will hopefully fix Aperture 2 and Aperture 3.
Unless anyone else has a fix?
Sincere apologies to all for banging on for so long !!

    Thanks for your input setwart.
When I make adjustments I do want Aperture to provide me with a new version so that I can see the original image and also that I have a version which I have already adjusted. I've previously tried changing that preference before with no improvement in performance unfortunately, but it's not really what I was referring to.
Versions, thumbnails and previews were very confusing terms to me for a while… actually, in some ways, they still are but my understanding is 'a little' better now.
That said, I probably used the wrong term.
What I meant was that every time you make an adjustment Aperture seems to produce a 'record' or 'snap-shot' of your image including that latest adjustment. In so doing you have an entire history of each adjustment you have made. In my head I picture this like a movie film-strip with each frame differing slightly. You increase your saturation by a single point? Another snap-shot. Fancy another single point on your saturation? Another snap-shot… and so on.
It is typical that I will make a bare minimum of 20 adjustments on each image, and that's before even thinking about straightening, cropping, and retouching… and then maybe I'll go back and tweak everything again !!
Somehow, my system is having difficulty in keeping up to speed with all of those snap-shots of individual adjustments. Certain adjustments will drastically slow things down more than others, and then I get to play with the beach-balls.
But - it used to handle these things just fine and that's what I'm trying to get back to.
    Thanks again for getting involved.

  • DW CS4 crashes in Snow Leopard

    Hi
Is it me or does DW CS4 just absolutely not work in SL 10.6.1 at all. Illustrator and Photoshop seem ok.
I have managed to get it to launch previously, but not today. Is it a known issue or should I de/re-install?
Any help is appreciated before I go through the painful re-installation process.
    Crash log is attached.
    Regards
    Craig.

Snow Leopard and CS4 are not the best of friends.
I might also recommend you visit the Apple forums, although I have not looked this topic up on that site.
I use CS4, I am not that experienced, but I have problems daily with CS4 freezing in Snow Leopard.
This is no help I'm sure, but wanted to let you know it is not your hardware, but in my opinion a conflict between Snow Leopard and CS4, whomever is responsible.
    Thank you,
    Dan

  • IMovie HD and Snow Leopard

I have version 6.0.4 of HD and Snow Leopard, but they don't work together when I try to combine HD and IM 11. Anyone found a way to do it? Thanks in advance.

    Hi
I try to combine HD and IM 11
    They doesn't.
You can have both in working order on the same Mac - but they do not communicate else than
via XML-files = Raw material can be moved over but no project can be shared to be compleated
    in the other application.
Only via QuickTime .mov file the movie with text and transitions can be moved but then in
    a NON-editable version.
iMovie 1 to HD6 is one Application serie
iMovie'08 to 11 - a totally different product - *wrongly named as iMovie* - no code is the same.

  • Photoshop and Snow Leopard 10.6

Having heard for years about the great support of Apple computers for graphics applications, I'm somewhat surprised to learn from Apple pre-sales personnel that Photoshop CS4 extended and Dreamweaver CS4 at present will not run under Snow Leopard 10.6
Would appreciate confirmation and, if true, estimated dates when we will again be able to run Adobe CS4 products in Snow Leopard 10.6

    David, thanks for your posts.
I am one of the frustrated users experiencing Photoshop Saving bugs, to the point where the application is unusable.
Is there any way I (or people like me) can actually help Adobe/Apple troubleshoot this issue, especially if the problem is difficult to repeat in your labs?
I can tell you, for example, that with 100% certainty this issue occurs when a file is saved with a NEW NAME to the hard drive. Once you've successfully opened or created a document, and are able to save it once, you can then continue to do regular File > Saves to you heart's content, just like normal.
But, when you go to Save AS (for example, you're working in a layered PSD file and need to save out some flattened JPEGs), that process quite literally becomes a game of Russian Roulette as you begin the frustrating process of random (but quite frequent and repeatable) crashes when Saving As.
As has been noted in other threads, this bug affects non-Adobe apps as well, but ALSO occurs in those other apps (I've seen it in Safari, etc.) when the OS receives the name of a file it is not expecting. My (non-engineer) observation is that the bug is related to harddrive I/O. From what I understand, when a file is saved, the hard drive allocates enough space to save the data in the file. Once that space is established, Snow Leopard seems to have no problem maintaining access to that allocated space for data reading and writing.
However, when you tell Snow Leopard you need to create a NEW file, and it has to allocate NEW space on the hard drive to save that data, *that's* when the error occurs. It seems to have a problem allocating new space on the hard drive, when it doesn't know how big your file is about to be.
Perhaps this problem is related to the new base-10 filesize reporting scheme that Snow Leopard introduced.
Unfortunately no crash reports are generated (the app just "disappears" from running, with no error reported, though you must still Force Quit it from the Dock in order to restart), so I can't share any logs (unless there are some hidden that I don't know about). However, I'm happy to help however I can, I live 3 blocks from Adobe HQ in SF, and I can test out any potential fixes if Apple/Adobe aren't able to replicate the problem.
    Thanks,
    Robbie

  • AVCHD and Snow Leopard (I-Movie / Final Cut Express)

AVCHD and Snow Leopard. I have been using Final Cut Express 4 and I-Movie 08 since they both came out. I have been using the same AVCHD camcorder (Cannon HG10) with both programs, and it has worked perfectly. Now I have installed 10.6 and 10.6.1 and now neither program will allow AVCHD transfer. Both recognize the camcorder but won't transfer.
A little poking around on the internet and I discovered that Snow Leopard won't support AVCHD (http://www.shedworx.com/no-avchd-in-snow-leopard). Third party web site mind you.
So far I agree it won’t work with AVCHD. Now since both programs were developed to use one of the most widely utilized formats in HD camcorders, again AVCHD, this accidental or intentional over site smells of Microsoft, not Apple.
I like some of the features of Snow Leopard but for me the video aspect is one of the top requirements. Apple had been the leader in the multimedia revolution and this mis-step with AVCHD is it’s typical of Apple.
I have just restored back to 10.5 and every thing is working again.
Now that were around the block here is the question. If anyone can come up with a solution…that does not include the used of third party software to convert, please let me know.
And to Apple, please fix this problem, I’m already hearing the complaints with QuickTime X, and seen the headlines, “Snow Leopard, is it Apples Vista?”.

This is, to be polite, a misunderstanding. Shedworx are being careless with their terminology.
    1. SL itself does not support AVCHD, but neither did Leopard.
    2. AVCHD support is built in to the movie editing software (iMOvie, FCE, FCP), exactly as it was in 10.5
    3. I am happily editing AVCHD from my HG10 in iMovie 09 and in FCP, in exactly the same way I did under 10.5
So you have a specific issue with your camera, you've taken that with some carelessness from Shedworx, and on that basis you've decided, incorrectly, that Apple does not/will not support AVCHD.
There were many cases under Leo where people reported problems getting their camera to communicate with iMovie. Solutions include:
    1. Trashing iMovie preference files
    2. Repairing permissions
    3. Copying the AVCHD folder tree from the camera to disk, and importing to iMovie from there
    4. Using MPEG Streamclip to convert the camera footage before importing to iMovie
5.Making sure the camera is running on mains power, not battery, and that it's in playback mode.

  • In limbo between Leopard and Snow Leopard - stupidly didn't back up

I've got an old-school black MacBook, about four years old now. I never cared enough to upgrade it to Snow Leopard, but now I want Lion. So, I borrowed my parents' five-license Snow Leopard install disc and started off on the journey to upgrade to Snow Leopard, download the App Store update, then download and install Lion. I didn't get far.
First, let me say that I didn't back up my hard drive. Like an idiot. Yes, I know it was stupid, so there's no need to say anything. My previous installs (a few clean re-installs) have gone without a hitch, so I figured I'd trust Apple and just run the installation without backing up. Dumb.
The Snow Leopard installation started fine, but was interrupted when the installer said the install failed. Restart, try again. Booting from the install DVD, things seemed to be going fine a second time around -- picked my language, got to the install set-up screen, picked Macintosh HD as my installation drive. And then things stopped working. The installer said my HD could not be written to and that it needed repair. So I went to Disk Utility to try that. Repair Disk wasn't available, so I clicked Verify Disk. That got interrupted when it said the disk needed to be repaired, after which the Repair Disk button was clickable. Tried to repair, but apparently my HD is screwed beyond the capabilities of Disk Utility.
I tried to reboot the MacBook from the HD, which Disk Utility said still had Leopard running on it. The computer wouldn't boot up. Safe Boot didn't work. So, without any other real options, I thought I'd try my luck by just trying the install again. Booted up from the install DVD, and ran into the same issues. Didn't magically fix itself, of course. So my MacBook is stuck in limbo between Leopard and Snow Leopard, won't boot from the HD and won't let me repair the disk when booted from the DVD. What do I do?
I plan to try a couple third-party disk-utility programs tomorrow (8/25/11) to recover the files on my HD. There's not much I care about on there (just some iPhone photos and my resume, really), so doing a clean wipe of the HD and installing Snow Leopard is an option. But I'd of course rather be able to recover my personal files. Is this possible at this point?
Another question I have regarding a clean wipe: If I end up having to clean off the HD and lose all my data, I'll lose the iTunes configuration for my iPhone. Will iTunes be able to import my apps and settings from my phone if I plug it in?
    Thank you very much.

  • I tried copying a photo and pasting it in another event/group within iPhoto but the paste feature doesn't work.  This wasn't an issue with both Leopard and Snow Leopard.  Do you have any solutions or tips?

I bought a new MacBook Pro with OsX Lion as operating system.  I use iPhoto a lot and when I tried copying a photo then pasting it to another event/group, the 'paste' feature doesn't work.  This wasn't the case with Leopard and Snow Leopard where the 'paste' feature worked.  What I did was to paste the photo first to the desktop before transferring it to the new event/group.  I brought my Mac to the Apple store where I bought it and the technicians were themselves surprised that the 'paste' feature didn't work.  Chalked it up to glitches in the Lion os.  So how do we fix this?  I just find it absurd that a feature that used to work in Snow Leopard has been disabled in Lion, and the user still has to undergo an additional step to make it work, when new technology is supposed to make things easier for users.
Also, hasn't anyone noticed that it takes longer for the computer to boot upon opening?

Instead of copy and paste drag the photo to the new event. Or flag it and use the add flagged photos to selected event command

Is it possible to install Lion on the second hard disk on my Mini (2010) Snow Leopard Server, and switch between Lion and Snow Leopard? I like those voices Lion has in speech.

When baltwosaid NO emphatically, that was described as CORRECT ANSWER. Ditto in the caeses of the radically different answers from  Camelotand Matt Clifton
Could it be that CORRECT ANSWER needs better defining by Apple?
That apart, yes, switching might involve rebooting. About the voices, well, I was the other day adding voice to a commentary in a video I was working on. There's only American English accent in SL — Lion I believe has British ones as well.
Why not, I wondered, try to install Lion purely for academic interest, maybe with an SD card (Sandisk Ultra II, 16GB) as Tom Nelson says is possible at http://macs.about.com/od/macoperatingsystems/ss/Perform-A-Clean-Install-Of-Os-X- Lion-On-Your-Mac.htm

  • Dual boot drive - Mountain Lion and Snow Leopard - Correct order to load software /apps?

    Hi
I want to create a dual boot drive for Mountain Lion and Snow Leopard as some of my hardware (is not supported in Mountain Lion).
I am happy how to do this, I just want to know if there is a correct way to install software and apps.
My plan was to do a clean install of both using two partitions, the larger going to ML and smaller one for SL.  I was going to install SL from the DVD and then after updating from 10.6. to 10.6.8 and download ML from the app store and install on the larger partition.
Do I install all the software I use like Final Cut, Aperture, iLife (for Garageband) etc on the ML or SL partition or on both.  Also, is there a better way / practise of the order software updates / apps and boxed software should be installed when doing a clean machine install.
    Thanks in advance.
    Matt

    Thanks mende1
So, if I have software I need to use on both ML and SL - for example Final Cut as I have a Canopus AVDC box which is not supported in ML but only SL, do I need to install the same software in both OS?
I usually open apps using spotlight and didn't know if it would software / apps would open if already installed on the other partition?
    Thanks again
