AE CS4 freezing on mac – because of audio gear?!
hi, been having a load of issues in the last months with AE (i'm on CS4 / 9.0.2 and a macpro 10.5.8 and 5 gigs of ram), but couldn't find a reaason for it until now – maybe...
here's what been happening
– when previewing movies, ae renders and starts previewing, but crashes pretty soon (WODing)
– when rendering, ae works nicely but hangs itself after it's done. movie is ok, but it just sits there, like on the last frame.
after spending days of searching forums – trashing preferences, rebuilding permissions, setting and resetting memeory and render settings – i finally concluded that it's an audio thing. when i render without audio everything is fine. when i don't use my audio interfaces – everything is fine. it's enough if i change the settings in the system preferences and in ae preferences (audio hardware). i even tried to fiddle around with the settings in the audio/midi utility but couldn't figure out what the ae 9.0.2. settings are.
can anybody at adobe tell me what's up? i need to work with sound.
i've been using a Focusrite Saffire firewire interface for a few years.
and i recently upgraded to a RME AIO PCIExpress card and external Lavry converter.
neither of them seem to be working with AE.
Logic, FCP works fine. and all "normal stuff"; itunes, QT, ...
read a post about people having to unplug their MOTU interfaces for AE to work.
that's where i got the idea that it's a audio problem.

CS4 freezes when editing audio.
Hello All,
I have a client that has a workstation that freezes when she edits audio in CS4. I have seen it happen and what it does is it keeps playing the audio but Adobe CS4 freezes until the audio is done playing or when she kills CS4. I have reinstalled Adobe CS4, talked to Adobe technical support, reloaded her workstation with Vista 64 bit, put in another hard drive for the page file, and ran through every troubleshooting document I could find on the forums and Adobes website. Her workstation is a Core2Quad 2.4GHz and 4GB of ram with Vista 64 bit.
This is an on-going issue that needs to be solved ASAP and any help would be appreciated from other users. I do not want to resort to calling Adobe technical support as I was not satisfied with their knowledge of their product.
Thank you,
Brian
Edit: Harm Millaard chime in if you have any suggestions. You seem to be very helpful on these forums. Also, you have a very impressive computer setup and props to you for putting it together. While I feel that the Assets, or the Project, are probably the culprits here, you might want to look over this ARTICLE on "tuning up" one's NLE computer. Might be something useful in it - if not now, then for later.
Good luck,

Slow down issue with Premiere CS4 on a Mac pro
I am having a similar slow down issue with Premiere CS4 on a Mac pro, but I don't have bloated prproj file size.
Here is what I am working with:
Mac Pro intel quad core 2.8ghz
OSX 10.6.7 Snow Leopard
6Gigs RAM
3TB storage between 4 drives, each drive with about 50% free space
I am editing a 10 minute HD video from avchd files. The edited video is very heavy in photoshop files with a variety of different fx including green screen. The system has slowed down to almost a standstill. Anytime I move the playcurser, or try to do any action, it displays the spinning top "thinking" icon and takes 15 seconds to several minutes to unfreeze. I am often forced to force quit and I have gotten unexpected quits several times. The program also freezes on startup frequently.
No other programs are running. When I export with media encoder, it took about 4 hours to complete. The last 4 or so photoshop images I added seemed to tip the program over the edge. It had been slowing down some, but those last few really dropped the processing speed. Before those additions, export took 30 min to 1hr.
I did delete the render files (did not check if the file size was bloated beforehand, oops) but it has not significantly affected my performance.Do you need all of those extra pixels in the stills? Are you panning the full 4976?
Two things to consider are that if you using, say a 1920 x 1080 Sequence Frame Size, you can only see that at any time, regardless of how large the images are in pixels. If there are extra pixels, i.e. the Pan is not using all 4976 pxls., I would Scale to just what you need in PS, prior to Import.
If you are doing any Scale in PrPro, its Scaling algorithms are not as efficient, as those in PS. [Note: CS5 and 5.5 are a major improvement on that statement.]
With many large stills (the max for CS4 is 4096 x 4096, if there ARE extra pixels, pushing those around will use up resources, and quickly. As a test, some years back, I was working on a "photo wall," and was using 4000 x 4000 images. The workstation had no issues with slowness, until I got to the 5th large still. By the 8th, the Project was too slow to edit. I had to wait for everything. Luckily, I have AE, and it handles large stills much more efficiently, and much differently, than PrPro. I just moved to an AE Comp, and completed the Project, finishing up n PrPro, after I Exported from AE.
Just something to think about. With Scaling in PrPro, this is one time, where bigger is not necessarily better.
Good luck,

Problems with Photoshop cs4 for the Mac
I am having all kinds of problems with Photoshop CS4 for the Mac. When I boot the software it seems to work for a while then, I am unable to open upf a file in Photoshop. I drag a photoshop file over the application icon, the whole screen flickers and nothing happens. I am unable to quit Photoshop as the quit choice is grayed out and command-q will not make it quit. I have to force quit. I can repeat this pattern over and over. What is happening? How do I solve this problem?
--KenoliThanks for the reply. I am using Photoshop 11.0.1. I am using the latest version of Snow Leopard. I have found both Photoshop and Dreamweaver to be pretty buggy for several versions now. My suspicions were that they were really engineered for Windows and never really fully implemented for the Mac. Dreamweaver crashes or hangs on me three or four times a day if I us it all day and does various annoying things like refusing to respond to the delete key after I have used it for a while. I have pretty much stopped using it to some degree for that reason and also because there is other software that does a lot of coding things I do much more directly and simply. Also Dreamweaver always seems to struggle to quit when I tell it to quit (that is, it takes a long time and gets hung up at places before it quits) and once it does quit, I always get a message saying that it has unexpectedly quit (even when I have told it to quit).
The problems with Photoshop (starting with just taking a long time to load) have escalated to the point I described today, which makes it almost unusable. I just reinstalled Snow Leopard to see if there was anything buggy in the system software. I will report if problems go away.
Regarding both the refusal to open image files and the grayed out quit command, made me think something like you, i.e. there was some dialogue box open somewhere. However, I couldn't find anything and I don't use two monitors.
So . . . Adobe just seems to be getting more expensive and more buggy.
Incidentally, why is it still running in Rosetta rather than natively? Adobe now has a real Intel processor to work with.

Premiere CS4 freezing with ATI 4850
My system:
Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHz
EVGA 141-BL-E757-TR LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX X58 SLI
Corsair 750W PSU
6GB DDR3
and I've upgraded from a Geforce 7800GT to an ATI XFX Radeon HD 4850.
Adobe Premiere CS4 freezes after a minute or so of playback with my ATI HD 4850. The screen literally freezes and I have no choice but to force a reboot. On my Geforce 7800GT, the playback is laggy/unresponsive but it never froze.
I've sent it in to XFX for repair previously because it wouldn't play back any HD video files. But now everything plays fine except playback in Adobe Premiere. XFX even sent me a benchmark test for Devil May Cry and because my computer passed, they refuse to RMA the card again.
I've tried EVERYTHING!
- Several different versions of the drivers: 10.4,10.3,9.11, all with no luck.
- Enable ATI Overdrive: when I auto-tuned it, it immediately crashed my computer and would do so consistently upon start-up so I had to disable it.
Any advice/comments/feedback would be greatly appreciated.
This is my second ever ATI card and I must say I've been very disappointed. I have never been able to have one work 100% for even a full 24 hours!!!I had issues with my Radeon 4670, similar but not quite the same as yours. In my case, rolling back drivers to 9.11 was the solution, but it sounds like you've already attempted that. If that hasn't solved the problem, and you're only seeing the issue after a minute or so of running PPro (my issue revealed itself immediately), I would look at a cooling/overheating problem. The newer GPUs (even though the 4000 series isn't that new) run hot even when they're not doing anything, and once you put them under any sort of load, the temperatures skyrocket. And since yours crashes during the auto-tuning, this lends more creedence to this theory; I was able to clock mine all the way up, but it's got a big honkin' aftermarket cooler on it.
I'm assuming you didn't send your whole PC in when you RMA'ed the card, so, 1) you don't know what kind of setup they tested the card in and 2) you don't know if they tested the card at all. For all practical purposes, this card should work "fine" with CS4, so the likelihood increases that there is some sort of physical defect with the card or cooling. Other folks here have a better grasp of the hardware and how to get the most from it (I'm more of a plug-it-in-and-hope-it-works kind of guy), so they might be able to tell you some ways to test the card and check its operating temperatures. -
Indesign CS4 freezes when I export to InCopy CS4 or when I update an InCopy File
Indesign CS4 freezes when I export to InCopy or when I update an InCopy CS4 File. I have done some of the troubleshooting steps already and have already re-installed and re-updated through Adobe Updater. But the problem still exists. Anyone have any patches or fixes? Or have had the same issue and fixed it?
I'm working on a Power Mac G5 with OSX version 10.4.11I am having the same issue with Flash CS4. Did you find a solution?

I have a late 2008 unibody MacBook running at 2GHz with 4 GB of memory. OSX 10.9.5.
My problem is, every time I open iTunes 12.1.2, I get the spinning colorwheel before I can even click on anything. It freezes my mac to the point where no force quit commands work, and I have to manually reboot it. When restarting, I get a message that pops up "Your computer restarted because of a problem." I have found no solutions to this problem, and all other discussions I've found differ slightly from my issue. Help!!!These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the BOOT_TIME log message that corresponds to the last boot time when you had the problem. Now clear the search box to reveal all messages. Select the ones logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Step 2
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.
When you post the log extract or the crash report, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created. -
When I start up Bridge CC I get a error message instructing me to purge cache in preferences which I do but it doesn't work and freezes my mac. I cannot curretnly use Bridge CC. PLease help as this is costing me time and money - thank you in advance....
Hold down the Option key as you launch Bridge, keep it down until you see a dialog box, then click all three options in the re-set box that comes up.
If you don't see that re-set box, you're doing it wrong, i.e., you're not holding the Option key down fast enough. -

Hi there,
Been searching and trying a lot but no luck so far. I have a surroundset Creative Inspire t6300
to be able to add some more fun to movies and a few games on my mac.
I own an upgraded Mac Pro 1.1 under Snow leopard, 2.33 gHz, dual processor, 8 core, 8 gb memory.
Even though it`s a piece for the museum, it works very well for designwork I do for work. No real need
to update for me, so....
As I understand, the optical out is standard 5.1. (By the way, the only other ports are the basic sound ports out
and in on the Mac). So after some research I found and got the 5.1 audio gear decoder. I connected this with
an opticle cable and used the 3,5 jackets from the surroundset to connect to (from left to right) cen/sw, (yellow
jacket) fl/fr (green jacket), sl/sr (black jacket) on the decoder. All perfectly understandable and it seemed to work well.
But when I tested with some of the testfile you find when googling on that, I think there is something wrong,
the typical surround effect is not there, it rather sounds more like stereo or even 5 mono`s.
I`ve tried Soundflower and JackPilot, but couldn`t get it right. With Soundflower I was able to choose 5.1 setting
(was not possible before) but testing it didn`t work.
There is an extensive test of the decoder on the net by someone who really is deep into the technics of it all but
no luck there either.
Back to basics: is it right that the optical out is truely 5.1 on the mac? With several tests the unit SFE does not react.
But when I play some music with iTunes, it works (loud and clearly :-)). Maybe I need a visit to the audiologist ;-) ?
Anyone?

https://www2.iis.fraunhofer.de/AAC/multichannel.htmlHello John, I figured it was a signal issue. All the speakers fire and the sound is great. I was running the speakers thru a Dell PC with a Creative X-Fi Elite Pro, THX Certified, 7.1 soundcard using a fiber optic from the Mac Pro to the Z906's, it worked great until the Dell died!!! When I bought the soundcard from Creative I also bought the GigaWorks S750, THX Certified, 700 watt, 7.1 speaker system, used the speakers for 11 years and then the woofer/amp said "I QUIT" Creative quit making the speaker system and the sound card. The satellite speakers from the Creative GigaWorks speaker system still sound great (rated at 78 watt each) and are a little better speaker than the one's that came with the Z906 and the wattage from the 906 is sufficient to drive the satellites without any distortion. Thank you for addressing my issue, you confirmed what I suspected all along, just needed to hear it from someone with the same setup.
One last question, I purchased a Diamond Multimedia USB Soundcard, can't use the fiber optic(not supported by Mac) but the green, tan and black RCA's plug in and produces adequetly. When you plug your 906's into the Mac Pro using the fiber optic how do you set your speaker configuration? When I plug into the mac pro with fiber optic the 'Audio Midi Setup' does not seem to see the 5.1 configuration. Any thoughts there?

I have CS4 on a PC. I have bought a new MAC. How do I install my CS4 on the MAC- it seems this is a windows license.
The license is only good for Windows and is too old to qualify for a platform swap. The only option you might have is to install Windows emulation software on the Mac and install CS4 thru that.

Bridge CS4 freezes when I open a folder with avi files
Whenever I navigate to a folder with avi files, Bridge CS4 freezes. I have tried resetting my preferences, changing the file associations, but it still hangs. Both Windows and Bridge are set up to associate avi files with VLC Media Player. The files open and play just fine in VLC. I am running CS4 on a Win XP Pro machine. It used to not be a problem and I could play avi files in Bridge. I'm not sure when the problem started since I don't shoot a lot of video. Any ideas?
Thx for that im gonna try it....but is there a way to do it without using toolbar or cmd-c...? i mean using only the mouse?why does it have to highlight the file even though i click a bit next to it....?using icon view i can right click next to the folder and i wont have a problem but with list view that i prefer using it will highlight the whole row.....and i dont find free space to right click cause i got many files

OS X 10.8.5 mac mini hdmi audio output issue
I am running a 2012 Mac Mini with OS X 10.8.5 and my Mac is set for audio and video output via HDMI to my AV receiver / TV. I have recently noticed that HDMI audio output ceases to function once the computer goes to sleep. A full computer restart is required to resolve the issue which is an inconvenience to say the least.
Or is anyone aware of a simple fix?
All my software is up to date, the HDMI lead and connection works fine for video and audio works fine after a restart so it must surely be a software error. Worked fine until the latest OS X update...

Photoshop CS4 crashes on Mac OS X 10.8.3
I have CS4 on my mac OS X 10.8.3. Photoshop CS4 is crashing all the time.
I update it regularly.
It used to crash using layers, so i changed the graphic settings as suggested in this forum, now this is ok.
Now PS crashes:
- everytime i do "save for web"
- often when i work on text layers
- sometimes for nothing in particular
It is really impossible to work in this conditions.
Fireworks CS4 crashes too when trying to save a file. For no special reason.
Please help me.
