AE CS4 - tips for getting green screen to sit nicely?

Hey, guys.
I'm about to start on a project that's largely green screen. Have a nice screen & lighting and the results are keying well. With that in mind, I'm working to improve on making the talent sit nicely in the backgrounds, which are typically stills of rooms or other physical locations. Here are the things that are on my radar at present, would appreciate any thoughts you might have on improving the results.
Make sure lighting of green screen shot matches that of set / background as closely as possible, e.g. light source direction, color temperature, etc.
Measure sets & use this information to properly scale talent when placing
Apply slight blur to background to emulate depth of field
Along the lines of 3), I find that a lot of green screen stuff I see doesn't really sell in part because there are very distinct and hard boundaries between the talent and the background. I'm also wondering if it's worth making a couple of passes at blur, one on the background, and the second by slightly enlarging the inverted mask from Keylight and applying a blur to that (a rather vague statement as I haven't experimented with this yet). The general idea to blur from the edges of the talent outwards just a bit, with a lighter blur, and blend that into that of the background.
On the surface, green screen stuff is supposed to be easy. Get a clean shot that keys well, drop it into your comp and you're done. However, seems to me that getting the clean footage to place is only the beginning in order to have something that truly looks natural.
What other tips and tricks do you guys use?

What you're asking about is the art of filmmaking.
Yep. Anything worth doing is worth doing to extremes!
While I'm not making a living with the visual arts at present, I've paid the bills as a musician, written a couple of books and these days work as a software developer. Whatever art I pursue, I want to achieve the highest production values possible.
And that's the cool thing about technology these days. Tools like Adobe are relatively inexpensive. Combined with a decent computer, you can absolutely create Hollywood quality material. It's not like the old days where a musician couldn't afford to buy that million dollar Neve console, let alone a recording studio. With the power that PCs give us, the limitations aren't physical or monetary. It's all down to talent and skill.
I don't have much of either of those at present, but that's a problem I can solve.

Since backing up my iPad air and installing IOS 8.1.2 the screen only shows the portrait view and won't change to landscape view when I turn the device. Any tips for getting back both views?

If you see a lock icon in the upper right corner of the screen - then the screen orientation is locked.
Try the side switch above the volume rocker first and see if that unlocks the screen. If that didn't work, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to the control center and the lock icon is in the row of icons at the top all the way to the right.
If the screen is unlocked but still will not rotate, reset the iPad.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the button

  • Are there other better plugins for keying green screen

I have started to use a green screen, and for the most part, its good, except for a few places in my actors head that fade in and out, I was wondering if there was a better, more powerful plugin to key out the green screen then what comes with FCP? thanks

Better than what ? what are you using? FCP6 up has excellent chroma keying capabilities .. I use FCP 7.01 but had FCP 6 before, both have (under effects) Keys; color smooth 4:2:2 then the Chroma Keyer .. There is a lot of fine adjustments of the Sat, Luma and edge softening which affect the end result .. To get it right it is long adjust / correct process but quality results often take time ..Have a look at Ken Stones tutorial (old, 2004, but still very valid principles): +http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/chroma_key_fcp_hdmonahan.html.+
A tip on posting here is to give lots of detail on what you are using, what the end deliverable is (media / format etc) it helps the real experts .. I exclude me from that list I am fairly new .. many users on this forum are industry experts and the detail you give the more helpful their responses will be..
    Have a look
    Good luck

  • Cannot see video, I get green screen and can only hear the contents

I've unintalled flash player and adobe shockwave and re-installed it again but I am getting the same problem. Video is not working. I dont know what to do.

    Hi  ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues, with help from the community!
I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about yourwith the Video not working correctly or green. Try clicking on the green screen, in the tab named Local Storage and put 10 KB and the green screen should disappear. Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system that need updating as the graphic driver could need updating. Have you tried another browser? This link will help you update your browser if needed. Let me know how this goes. Thanks.

  • Isolate lips--what face paint color should I use for best green screen keying effect?

Hello there!  I am using Elements 11.
It sounds like I answered my question in my question.  Green, right?  But , face paint doesn't have the reflective, glossy quality that a true green screen would have.  Does that change anything?  Should I look for green face paint or would another color work better in this context?
Again, I'd like to isolate the lips of my subject.  The shot will be a close-up, framed to where it only includes lips, chin and nose.  Let me know if it'll help to provide a screenshot.
One more question...  Once I've removed the background and isolated the lips, is it possible to move them around the frame discretely?  Meaning, they appear here in bottom center and then suddenly appear in upper left corner?
    Thanks for your time!

    Thanks for replying AT!
I am using Mac version.  Good question since I do NOT have Chromakey.
To help us along, I have uploaded a number of images from a test I did yesterday.
I am getting some results but they are imperfect.
I do believe my main issue has to do with a lack of uniform LIGHTING.  As my subject's lips move, it creates shadows thus making it difficult for Elements to pick up the green.
I used Non-Red Key and then Garbage Matte to get the results that you see.
    Thanks!

  • Can I change the background for the green screen after my project is completed?

    Hello,
My daughter just made a full project in imovie then tried to add the green screen background and found that she has to redo the whole project.  Is there anyway for her to add this after the fact?
    Thank you,
    Heather

If these are purchase movies and not rentals, from iTunes, on your computer, you can select the movie in iTunes, use the key combination command-I to get the info on the movie. A info window pops up. Click the Options tab, a volume slider appears at the top of the window, slide the slider all the way to the the right, click the OK button at the bottom of the window. Then reconnect and sync your iPad, again, to the computer and wait for the movie to update to your iPad, then once everything is complete, eject the iPad from the left hand pane and disconnect. When you play the movie, again, from the iPad, the volume should be louder.
I do not believe you can do this with rented iTunes movies, though as I do not think they are editable as a rental.

Problem:  When I turn on AppleTV, I get a solid green screen on my television display. Apparently it is only a problem with the video signal, as the audio still works.
I have just started experiencing this problem.  For the past 2 years, it has worked fine.  I turned on ATV to listen to music the other day and there was the green screen.  I changed nothing prior to this.

ATV Gen 3   -->   AVR Onkyo TX-NR609  -->   LG LED LCD Television (47”)
Troubleshooting shows that the ATV works fine when plugged directly into the LG TV HDMI port, so I’m assuming that rules out the ATV box itself and the HDMI cable.  Also, the HDMI cable works fine when used with another component (DVD player).
When the green screen is displayed, I can play a YouTube video from my iphone via Airplay and hear the audio but not see the video.
DirectTV and DVD player work fine through the AVR and TV.
When ATV is initially turned on, the Apple logo is displayed for a few moments, then disappears and the green screen appears.
I have tried resetting ATV.  I have turned off entire system and turned it back on.  I have the latest firmware on the LG TV.
Any idea what I can do to fix this?   Thanks.

    Change the Apple TV resolution:
Press and hold the Menu and Up button on your Apple Remote for six seconds.
The Apple TV will automatically cycle to the next resolution at approximately 20 second intervals.
Press Play on the Apple Remote to keep the current resolution or Select to manually cycle to the next resolution.
Try a different HDMI port on the receiver, if this has not been tried already.
Contact Onkyo for assistance, their may be a firmware update for the receiver.  Although this would not explain why it worked previously and now is not working properly.
Also, see if there is a way to reset the receiver to a factory "out of the box" state to clear up any settings issues on the receiver that may be causing the issue.

  • I get  green screen when playing videos in itunes

Hi I get a green screen when I play videos in itunes even in the store when i try to see previews. Any ideas what is wrong. I have quicktime installed.

Try to disable the hardware acceleration in the Flash Player.

  • Where can I find more backgrounds for a green screen effect?

I'm working on a project for my son's 5th grade class and recorded all of the kids in front of a green screen.  The backgrounds available in iMovie are pretty basic, anyone have a good suggestion on where to find more and how to add them?

You can use any suitable photo or video as a background, you don't have to use iMovie backgrounds which are intended mainly as backgrounds to titles.

  • Any tricks for shooting green screen with C300?

Any tricks to shooting green screen with C300?

Sounds like the color space conversion is simply intensifying compression artifacts that are there in any case. It's a compressed format, after all. You might need to check some specific CoDec options to get a better conversion. Short of that I have no idea, since I don't have access to such files ATM, but if you can provide a short clip somewhere (rapidshare, yousendit etc., ca. 30-100 MB), I might have a look and be able to offer more specific guidance how to work around the issue.

  • STILL getting green screened when viewing video.. Fix?

    Hey all,
I've had this issue for probably 6+ months. I'm fairly sure a lot of people are familiar with this issue. If I view a flash player that attempts to play video, it shows nothing but a green screen. Regular flash content works fine, only video ends up green screening me (like anything on youtube).
Yes, disabling hardware acceleration makes it work. I am very familiar with that fix. The video is fully viewable at that point, but when I hit a complex website my system bogs down to a crawl without acceleration otherwise. It makes flipping between acceleration and no acceleration a huge hassle.
This is a new OS install. I've uninstalled/reinstalled flash player, no difference.
OS: Win 7 Pro 64bit (all latest updates)
    Flash Player: v11.1.102.55 (current)
Video: ATI Radeon 4870 X2 running latest driver (v11.12)
    Browser: All browsers
I can't figure out where the problem lies, between the probably onboard hardware h264 decoding on the vid card or flash player.
Any idea why this is happening on an otherwise (old but) quality video card?
    Thanks for tips

We've got a couple simultaneous preview releases available.
11.2.300.130 is the Protected Mode for Windows Firefox incubator.  It probably doesn't contain the video fixes you're looking for.
The Flash Player 11.2 Beta 5 (11.2.202.197) release is the best candidate to test this issue on.

  • When I apply the Key for a green screen, everything blue turns purple. How can I correct?

When I apply the Key to an evenly lit greenscreen, anything blue turns purple. How can I correct this?

There's way too much blue in that green screen
    This is green
Try pulling down the spill level and reducing the spill tint. You're probably going to have to tweak the color selection manually.

    Hi,
Try a clean installation of the flash plugin/activeX as follows.
First, download the Flash uninstall utility on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
    Flash Player Uninstaller.
When the download has completed, close all browser windows, open your Download folder and run the uninstaller.  After this has completed, restart the PC.
When windows has reloaded, download and install the latest version of Adobe Flash.  Note: You may want to deselect the option to include McAfee Security Scan Plus before downloading.
When the installation has completed, restart the PC.
If the above doesn't correct the issue, then try the following.
First of all, download and run the Shockwave uninstaller on the link below.
    http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/shockwave/uninstall/win/sw_uninstaller.exe
After this has completed, restart the PC.
When windows has fully reloaded, download and install the latest version of Shockwave on the following link.
    http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/
Again, after this installation, restart the PC.
    Regards,
    DP-K
