AE CS5 Crashing with Zero Denominator & Strange Situation errors
Good afternoon!
In AE CS5 for OSX, we've started observing a strange behavior:
- I have an AE project w/ footage loaded, including a Quicktime movie rendered out of another app (e.g., a 3D app)
- I need a change to the movie, so I re-render it from the 3D app, replacing the existing movie.
- In AE, I get impatient and click Reload Footage while the movie is still being re-rendered.
In past versions of AE, I got an error (unrecognized file type) but AE continued to operate. With CS5, I get a series of errors:
"may be an unsupported format" (expected)
"zero denominator in ratio addition"
"zero denominator comparing ratios"
"zero denominator converting ratio denominators"
"After Effects Error: Strange Situation"
Even after the movie finishes rendering, I keep getting the errors and clicking OK keeps presenting errors. Have to force-quit AE to get on with my day.
Is this a bug? New in CS5? I understand that I'm trying to do something "wrong" by loading a piece of footage that's invalid, but shouldn't I just get a polite "that piece of footage is no good", the ol' test-pattern, and be able to keep working and come back to it when it's ready?
Anyone else run into this?

In theory yes, but as I just explained in another thread, 64bit AE vs. ye olde QT is full of workarounds and limitations due to Apple not seeming to care at all. That and the differences in 64bit file access on a more general level may lead AE to wrong conclusions. I'm sure it's a bug of sorts plus perhaps your 3D app (Cinema 4D?) could also do better by closing and re-opening the file from time to time so at least some parts are accessible instead of keeping it permanently open. For the time being, simply use image sequences...

InDesign CS5 crashes with every file. Is anybody out there?
Hello. Can someone help me with this? I have a magazine to do, i didn't sleep for the past two days and today suddenly when i was setting up the file to send it, indesign crashes, first only that file, now all of them. It opens the recovery files always no matter what. But then crashes. Please any help would be appreciated! So much to be done.. I've read posts on this matter but nothing i do seems to work. The Sing stuff, Mark II, preferences, library.. unnistall, install.. i even moved one file to open with a windows computer and indesign also crashed, last version.
I need somebody. Please help. Thanks in advance

bump!
Bump after 6 minutes? Geeze! That's a bit excessive.
You're running:
Version: 7.0.0.355 (7000)
Upgrade to 7.0.4.553 and come back, reposting the crash report if you still have one.
There are a huge number of fixes in 7.0.3, and also some in 7.0.4, which you need.
Your crash is clearly related to preflight. If you get another crash with preflight turned off, please post that. -
Libgc crashes with 'can't allocate header' error
We have tried to use libgc (http://developers.sun.com/solaris/articles/libgc.html) on Solaris to solve memory fragmentation problem in our product. It did work well for low volume tests. Memory drop was seen. But when subjected to heavy load, it crashes the server with 'Can't allocate header' error. Do any have an idea on what to do in such situations ?
Thanks for the explanation of incompatibility between Java GC for C++. Regarding multithreading support, I did mail to Boehm, Hans. The following is the excerpt from his reply:
"If you are going to try the open source GC, I would first try gc7.2alpha4, which is close to the current CVS version. You would probably need to build it with -DREDIRECT_MALLOC=GCmalloc or --enable-redirect-malloc to allow it to intercept plain malloc calls. This is likely to cause problems for a multithreaded Solaris application; I haven't tried recently."
Also, We've tried to compile gc6.8 and gc7.1 versions with redirect malloc and enable threads options. There's an explicit check for this in the gc code. If redirect malloc, enable threads are mentioned and if the OS is not Linux, the compilation fails. Multithreaded support with redirect malloc seems to be well tested on Linux and it is not guaranteed on Solaris. The reply from Boehm also confirms it. It would be nice if Solaris releases the latest version gc by resolving the programming interface changes. -
All CS2 apps crash with "Read Only Memory Exception" error.
Machine Specs.
Apple G5 1.8ghz DP
OS X 10.4.10
It doesn't matter which one I open, they all crash with the same error. This started when a user placed a support ticket for their mac not starting up. I wasn't able to save the user so I created a new user, and then moved their desktop files over to the new user. However the only files I moved were those on the desktop, and their Notes data directory.
Thinking my job done I marked the tickets closed and walked away.
I got a call later when the user came into the office and the issue was that Indesign CS2 was crashing with a "Read Only Memory Exception" error. I first deleted the Preferences on the machine. That didn't work.
So I created a new user to see if it was the user causing the errors. I received the same error when opening Indesign CS2 from the brand new user account. I also tested all other CS2 programs and got the same errors.
Next I tried deleting the CS2 programs and re-installing them. No luck, same error, even with a new user. I have not re-installed any plug-ins with the new App installs yet.
Removed all fonts, and ran a font cache cleaner. Same error.
Finally, the last thing I've tried is to manually remove every adobe application on the machine. Acrobat 5/6/7, CS1, CS2...etc. I have also removed any Adobe files/folders in the //library/, and /$home/Library/.
Yet I still get the same error. Short of a complete wipe I'm not sure where to proceed next. I'm really confused and hoping someone can give me some clues. Thanks to a comcast permissions error any new files I upload to my comcast.net pages requires the administrator username/password to even see the file to download it. Simply giving out the URL for new files results in page not found errors.
So for the forseeable future I don't see any way to upload this file correctly. Its there on my webspace all 63megs of it. If I login through the FTP account I can upload and download to my hearts content but since anonymous access is disabled I'm not giving out my administrator login info.
I've got a gig of space, using 22mb of it, and can't upload any more files because no-one has permissions to access them.
I spent a half hour on the phone with comcast trying to figure this out. However I don't know whats going on with their end. I have a trouble ticket open for a level 3 tech, we'll see whats going on.
So the Font Scrubber will remain unavailable for the time being unless someone wants to give me guest upload access to a FTP account. I'm not opening a fileshare account with anyone, don't like'm. -
Indesign CS5 Crashes with Incopy Workflow
I work for a large publishing company that publishes thousands of titles per year. Several divisions use Indesign, but only our Publishing Division uses the Indesign/Incopy workflow, and they are the only division experiencing widespread crashing in CS5. The divisions who do not use Incopy are not crashing. Here's what we know causes the crashing in Indesign CS5:
1. Exporting stories to Incopy. This is a widespread, yet inconsistent problem. One time you crash, the next time you don't. We've done the IDML export to CS4, reopened the files and saved as CS5. This helped with some files, but not others. I talking about hundreds of different publications and files. All people are patched to the newest version. Some are on Snow Leopard and some are not. However, I'm on Snow Leopard and the crashing does happen on my computer too (sometimes). The problem continues. I've found workaround for some problems, but there's no workaround for exporting to Incopy. It's something you have to do in this workflow.
2. Saving an Indesign files with an Incopy story checked out. This will cause a crash almost every time. We've been in the Indesign/Incopy workflow since CS2 and never had this problem in the past. This is an easy fix; just make sure you check in stories before saving, but it's a hard habit for some to break.
These issues have been reported to Adobe, with absolutely NO explanation or resolution. After six years in this workflow, I'm at the point of having to consider abandoning Incopy -- not an easy thing to do in such a large organization. After 2 days straight, I FIGURED IT OUT!!!! I was trying everything, especially related to font book and fonts and resetting prefs, etc...
I narrowed it down to 1 constant variable: it's happening on the 2012 macbook's, so I reset my mac and held command + R and re-installed Lion, then I DID NOT INSTALL THE UPDATE FOR THE MACBOOK 2012. Then I tried exporting a smallest file size pdf with overset text and also tried deleting a page with an object on it and BAM! No blank warning dialog and even more importantly: NO MORE CRASHES!!! Hey, I might not lose all my clients afterall!
got the good ol' warning box we all love and missed:
Again:
- power off mac and turn back on while holding down Command + R (dont do it on an external keyboard just to be safe)
- choose the re-install Lion option (I'm sure there is another way to re-install Lion, this is just the way I did it, not saying its the best or only method)
- DO NOT INSTALL MACBOOK (Mid 2012) Software Update 1.0 - THIS SCREWS ADOBE UP!
After you guys try this please let us know how your system is operating, I am noticing my macbook pro is so slow and when trying to send an email and choosing an email to reply to and attach something,etc.. each click triggers the beachball and I gotta wait a few moments..?? I'm sure we might be missing out on some good updates from not updating to the 1.0 software update....but....
So my final question is:
is this Apple's problem or Adobe's and who needs to do what here??? Why can't we all get along... -

InDesign CS5 Crashes with Warning Dialog Box
Hello,
Facts:
InDesign CS5, v7.0.4
OS X 10.7.4
No third-party font-management application running.
Macbook Pro (June, 2012)
InDesign crashes in these two instances:
1. Trying to delete a page that has content. Right as the warning box comes up, it shows up without content (just the "Warning" title) and crashes.
2. When packaging a file, as it's about to warn you about the perils of archiving fonts it does the same thing as above, and crashes.
Tried the alt-opt-cmd-shift trick to reboot preferences and nothing.
Tried deleting the two preference files directly so that they would rebuild and nothing.
Interestingly, I have another computer running OS 10.7.3 (as opposed to 10.7.4 on the crashy one) and the same InDesign CS5 7.0.4 and that one works perfectly.
Ideas? Leads?
Thanks
ArminAfter 2 days straight, I FIGURED IT OUT!!!!
Photoshop CS5 crashes with type
If I open a PSD with type, the file opens but Photoshop hangs. If the PSD contains no type (eg type rasterised), Photoshop works fine. My OS is Windows Vista.
Hans.Hans, it seems your script did not run correctly. Maybe you can backup your fonts and then revert to the windows default fonts. Later on you can add fonts and find witch font is causing the issues.
1. Backup fonts: %WINDIR%\fonts
2. Restore default fonts
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-desktop/how-to-restore-windows- 7-default-fonts/73a8eb3e-3189-4514-b87c-18fcdca4fe26
You can restore the default font and remove any changes that you've made to your display settings from Appearance and Personalization.
Here’s how:
1. Open Fonts by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Fonts.
2. In the left pane, click Font settings.
3. Click Restore default font settings.
3. Test to see if Photoshop keeps running.
4. Add half of the custom fonts test again, if not crashing you can rule those fonts out from error's.
Good luck! -
Bridge CS5 crashes with an unhandle exception Just-In-Time
I have problem on Win XP, SP3 with following message:
Bridge crashes e.g. if I load images for removable disc, if I click on thumbnail in Bridge etc.
I am not able how to solve this problem.
Any idea will be appreciated. The plug-in comment refered to Visual Studio. If Bridge worked yesterday and today it does not, and you have made no other changes in hardware or software I would reset the preferences.
Close Bridge and then hold down the Crtl key while starting Bridge. You should get a reset window with 3 options. -
InCopy CS5 crashes with "Font Capture..." error
I've installed InCopy CS5 on my Windows XP machine but somehow something is going wrong with saving the preferences.
I get an error:
Font Captur: InCopy.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "..." referenced memory at "...". The memory could not be "read".
I've done some searching and found this solution:
1. Quit InCopy.
2. Rename the InCopy Defaults file (for example, to InCopy Defaults .old) in the C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Adobe\InCopy\Version 7.0 folder.
3. Rename the InCopy SavedData file (for example, to InCopy SavedData .old) in the C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\InCopy\Version 7.0\Caches folder.
4. Start InCopy. InCopy creates a new preferences file.
But, this is only temporary, and has to be done every time when I want to work with IC.
Is there a permament solution for this problem? That is a sign that your preference files are becoming corrupt. Something is wrong with your system if this is happening regularly.

CS5 Crashing with Type Tool in Windows
I'm running Windows XP and have Photoshop CS5. It worked great for about 2 weeks then it started doing random things like it wouldn't create a new image because it said I didn't have enough RAM (have plenty and checked the settings to confirm). Now it hangs up and has to be killed everytime I try to use the Type tool. I tried deleting the preferences file - no luck. I tried restarting my system. I installed the latest update from Adobe, killed the preferences and restarted the system. Still no luck. Suggestions??? I really need this to work ASAP and be able to use the type tool.
Internet Explorer can install fonts from the web when set to defaults, as I recall, so you may not know it was installed.
One pretty geeky trick for finding out which font files have been created recently is to go into a CMD window and type the following command:
dir c:\windows\fonts /od /tc
The most recently installed fonts will appear the bottom of the list.
Note that for the C:\windows\fonts folder, specifically, Windows Explorer won't show you the creation date, just the modification date.

This happens with almost every website I go to.
Hi moreofless, did a separate crash dialog indicate that it was a DEP error (sometimes the Windows crash dialog will indicate this)?
In some cases a DEP error can indicate that malware is attempting to interact with Flash, or that the Flash media you were using was malicious. It may be worth running a few supplemental scans just in case. The support article has suggestions on free tools that have proven reliable for Firefox users: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]].
A common problem on Windows Vista and higher is incompatibility with the protected mode feature of the Flash Player plugin. Usually this leads to frequent, unsubtle problems, so you might not have this problem, but just in case, you could disable it.
See this support article from Adobe under the heading "Last Resort": [http://forums.adobe.com/message/4468493#TemporaryWorkaround Adobe Forums: How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?]
Or if there are problems with permission, try this way:
(1) In a My Computer or Windows Explorer window, open this folder:
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash
If that folder does not exist, then you are using 32-bit Windows, and you can open the following folder instead:
C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash
''(Note: This folder exists on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows, but on 64-bit Windows Firefox uses the Flash player in the SysWOW64 folder instead.)''
(2) Check for a file named mms.cfg:
'''''Note:''' If you do not see file extensions such as .ocx, .dll, .exe, and .cfg on the files in this folder, then Windows may be hiding these from you. In order to work with file names accurately, it is best to unhide the extensions. This Microsoft support article has the steps: [http://support.microsoft.com/kb/865219].''
(A) ''If mms.cfg exists,'' drag it to your '''Documents folder''' where you can edit it without being bothered about administrator privileges
(B) ''If mms.cfg does not exist,'' open your '''Documents folder''', right-click > New > Text File and name the new file mms.cfg
(3) Open mms.cfg from Documents into a text editor such as Notepad.
Add this on its own line (I put it last):
ProtectedMode=0
Save the file and close Notepad.
(4) Hold down the Ctrl key and drag the mms.cfg file back to the Flash folder to make a copy there, keeping the original in Documents
This change will take effect once the Flash plugin is completely unloaded, which may require exiting and restarting Firefox (allow a few minutes for all the Flash processes in memory to terminate after exiting Firefox).
