AE CS5 - Viewing items off the artboard

I'm going to be embarrassed about showing my Illustrator and Flash roots here, but I am animating things that come in from "off-screen". I need to be able to position them accurately in their "off screen" configuration. So in my Composition preview pane I can see the wireframe outline of the shapes, but I need to be able to see the items themselves (ie: the pixels). In Flash you can show or hide the artboard workspace, allowing you to see items that won't end up on-screen in the final composition. I'm really hoping that AE has a similar feature.
"Modfying and using views" is the closest chapter I can find in the AE Help, which has no mention whatsoever about my question. If I'm missing something in the manual, please point it out. If there's a trick, then I'd love to hear it! If AE doesn't do this... well, I would be baffled but perhaps not shocked... is there a best practice workaround?

Thanks Mylenium and Todd for your helpful posts. Mylenium - that's an interesting workaround. I'll have to noodle it a bit to see how I can work that technique into my workflow. Perhaps I'll need to set up some kind of "guide" box or shape that will let me know when the animation will be "in frame", which I would then make shy for the final composition.
Todd, thanks for the link. I'll be sure to make a request. The more consistency Adobe can build into its apps across the Creative Suite, the stronger the product line will be and the more it will justify Adobe's way of marketing and selling the apps bundled as opposed to individually, the way it use to be (sigh the good ol' days).

Viewing objects that are off the artboard in a CS3 ai file

would really like to know how i can save an .ai file from CS3 that allows me to view ALL the objects in it when placed into Indesign, not just whats on the artboard. (the ai file seems to auto crop itself when placed). the problem is solved if i save it as an eps instead, but ideally would like to work with ai files. it worked fine in CS. thanks! tim

Try saving as PDF, but I Think you are limited o the bleed distance. Illustrator files (as of version 13) don't support bleed. Really. Yes, really. Really!

How to view objects off the canvas?

is there a way to see the objects that are off the black center canvas, that are sitting on the gray "artboard" (like one can see in indesign or illustrator)? i'm working with objects that start off the canvas and then follow motion paths onto the canvas, but although i can select them, i can't see them until they hit the canvas proper. i'm new to motion and can't find the answer to this question anywhere, or maybe i'm looking at this the wrong way...??

You can't see the object off the canvas, but you should be able to see it's bounding box - if you can't see it, check under the View button at the top right of the Canvas - make sure Lines and Handles both have checkmarks.

Items off the stage are showing up in the browser. How do I stop this?

When learning Flash, I was taught in the beginning that only items that appear on the stage actually show up in the final animation. Clearly, these people were wrong. I thought it would be easy to have some text move in from off the right side of the stage to the middle, but the text still shows up even before it enters the stage in the browser. I have tried to change this using various publishing options, HTML, and CSS, with no luck. I did have to resize the stage, and I'm not sure if that means anything. Can someone help me figure this out? Thank you.

Here are a few things I noticed:
No DOCTYPE for the page:

Next, your main container is 1000px wide (as per your CSS) but in your IE conditional you are placing a 1500 px wide .swf inside.
<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="1500" height="217.....
so for course that won't work. In IE that results in a bottom scroll bar no matter how wide a monitor... it's never wide enough to display without scrollbar
FF is different because:

You're using smaller dimensions....so set them both the same.
If your main container is 1000px wide, then the stage size of your .swf should be 1000px, not 1500, not 713. Then set the width/height of the <div> holding your .swf to the exact same size as the .swf. That should eliminate any off stage stuff from showing.

You see a remote view of folders on the server.
So the folders in Thunderbird and the folders you see via webmail using a browser are one in the same.
When you delete in Thunderbird or via webmail you are deleting off the server.

When I Google something in Fierefox 4, Google provides a drop down list of suggested options based on the first few letters, so why can't I choose an item off the list like I used to with earlier Firefox versions.

I updated to Firefox 4 yesterday. If in Google I type say LON it gives a drop down box offering choices like 'London underground', 'London tube map'. If I want to choose one such option, I click on it, but the Firefox/Google search does nothing. I have to type the whole thing out in full. Everything worked fine with FF3.

After a notice of update, I was unable to use iTunes. It said I had a missing dll file and a Windows error 7. I removed iTunes and tried to reinstall. I selected the download items off the apple site. It says thank you but still not there.

Having problems downloading iTunes. After an update notice, I was unable to open iTunes. I de-installed and attempted to reinstall it and it still won't open.

A msi file is short for microsoft installer. It normally is for installation, removal, and maintenance for a program. So iTunes.msi would be used for the updating of the program. For some reason it isnt finding this so we can't update, install, or remove it.
From what I have seen windows installer cleanup utility solved related problems before.
I found this forum about removing and installing a new iTunes. It was about someone who was trying to isntall iTunes, and was looking for msi file and asked for help. Using this should allow you to be able to install iTunes. It won't give you the msi file but will allow you to isntall iTunes over again.
This was what was said.
Another option in case you can't get an msi. (Or even if you can ... the msi's mentioned in the messages may be damaged rather than missing.)
Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (The results from mydigitallife and Major Geeks are worth checking.)
After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove".
Restart the PC, and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

I am trying to copy a document and I keep getting the error "Can't paste the objects. The requested transformation would make some objects fall completely off the drawing area."

I am trying to make duplicate documents with minor adjustments to each and when I try to copy the artwork from one document and paste it into the new document I keep getting the error "Can't paste the objects. Both documents are exactly the same size, res, color format etc. I even tried to drag and drop and get the same error message. Anyone know what I can do to resolve this issue?

Try scaling the view size down to 6% or so and then do a Select All. See if there are objects off the artboard which may be causing this error. Most often you will see this if there were guides dragged from a ruler which were selected by dragging the white arrow and then deleted. This leaves the anchor points at the edge of the work area.

Is it (still) possible to set a grid behind the artwork but above the artboard?

Is it me, or has this changed in CC 2014? I used to be able to turn the artboard off (Ctrl+Shift+H) and use the grid (Ctrl+') freely throughout the workspace - behind the artwork I am drawing.
However now I am forced to turn off "Grids in background" whenever I turn off the artboard edges, because they disappear. Therefor I now need to work with grids overlayed on top of my artwork, which I find very frustrating, having to turn it on and off all the time.
To be clear: I work a lot outside of any artboards.

Isn't it no longer possible to view grids behind artwork with the following settings:
Grids in Back selected
Outside of any artboard
With artboard edges turned off as well (Ctrl+Shift+H)
With the above described scenario you get A. from my example image. But I'd like to see D., which is only possible within an artboard.

ECT List View Web Part displaying incorrect data when View Item

I have a External Content Type which pulls data from a stored procedure. The stored procedure has 1 parameter - the users logon id. The data retrieved is a list of meetings with start date time, end date time, location, subject, etc. From this ECT there
is an External List which displays all data correctly.
There is 2 pages within the site and its subsites that have list view web parts which display a subset of the info from the external list. When the user clicks a specific meeting to display the complete info on the meeting, the wrong information is displayed,
it always displays the info for the 1st meeting in the list. So, I displayed the BDC Identity field on the list and this field is identical for all the rows since the key for the ECT is the username and hence not unique.
I've spent all day trying to finding a way to resolve this and have come up empty. I've tried to find a way to make the BDC Identity field to be unique, using Business Data View web part, Data View web part, and nothing.
The user needs to be able to click the My Meetings url header on the above pages to see a full list of their meetings so I need the external list. Any ideas how to make the BDC Identity field unique or how to get the View Item on the List View web part to
work correctly?

I resolved the non unique BDC Identity problem by simply adding the row # to the Username in the stored procedure so the BDC Identity fields on the list records are now unique (although they're really long ie. __bk44003500070057003700560027000200140037003700f600360096001600470056003300,
__bk44003500070057003700560027000200140037003700f600360096001600470056004300 etc). Not sure how it generates the BDC Identity?
I still see the same behaviour when you select a meeting to display the details. It always displays the 1st record in the list.
I added code to the DispForm to display the ID when the page loads and the BDC Identity from the record and verfied that they do match.
I can add another parameter to the stored procedure and just return the row # in that field. What do you mean by make the identifire as Identity in operations?

Can't get rid of items from the Side bar

I placed some movies in the side bar and now I can't get rid of them. I was able to remove one movie that I placed in the side bar today from the side bar, but some other movies I can't remove. I don't remember putting these movies in the side bar. When I left click on these movies all that comes up is Sidebar Preferences.

I found the answer by browsing. I am supposed to hold the Command key down and drag the item off the sidebar. It worked. I was trying to right click the item and remove it that way which didn't work.

How can I change the color around the artboard in CS4?

In CS4 its creamy/dirty white. I always work around the artboard and I want the area to be plain white as in CS3. Does anyone know how to change this?

I noticed this as well and it's driving me nuts. What I found bizarre is that I was able to work with the standard white artboard in CS4 - common to legacy versions of the program - for the first few days until just this morning. Evidently, this must be some sort of prefernce that may have changed unexpectedly. Most posts relate to changing the transparency grid or turning off the artboard. Not the solution I'm looking for -
I'm still at a loss for what to do, but am considering discarding my preferences file to see if that does the trick.

How to hide "View Item" ribbon element using jquery for a single custom list?
In CEWP, i have tried this:

But this is not hiding the "View Item" option.

I have tried different CSS and Javascript tricks to hide this item but not successed,
Now one another solution i found is to used the SPRibbon.TrimById method,
So for that you need to create one webpart, and add following line of code to it , add this dll first Microsoft.Web.CommandUI.dll

Rules List Too Long and Runs off the Bottom of the Screen

... this means the Cancel, OK and folder selector are all missing. I have a large screen and even though I've added many into a list still it runs out of view and off the screen...
Any ideas how to limit the height?

I had this problem too. The only workaround I found was to limit the number of entries per rule. That means I have several rules that are divided Part 1, Part 2, etc.
Would love to know if there is a better workaround, but I haven't found it yet.

Trashing items on the desktop

I cannot get items off the desktop into the trash. I get the error code -35, telling me I cannot trash the items because needed information is missing...??? How can I correct this?
