AE cs6 disk cach settings

hi community
i'm rocking AE version 11.0.1.12
my system is a 2x 2.4ghz quad core intel xeon mac with 16gb ram. i'm on lion 10.7.4
following my upgrade to CS6 I have installed a new 120gb SSD to work as a cache to make use of the global performance cache.
this was all last week, so I haven't yet done any serious testing to see if this is really working, but I'm posting because every time I start up AE i get this dialog:
i've messed around with the preferences options for disk cache but this seems to happen whatever amount of drive space I've allocated.
currently I have it set to 60gb - half the size of this drive - but ideally I'd like to use the whole dang thing.
here's a screenshot of my cache prefs:
i should point out that there is nothing else on this drive. its a 120gb OCZ vertex3 esata internal  SSD.
i came to the forum as I can't find anything in the ae help docs or online relating to optimum settings for a dedicated SSD cache drive, so i'm not sure what I'm doing wrong... but I'm pretty sure I shouldn't be getting an error like this.
your input, as always is appreciated
dan

Simply ignore it. Seems to be a bug. I'm even getting it on my 2TB RAID.

  • CS6 Disk Cache reporting as full when it's not

I put a 120GB Samsung Pro 840 Pro SSD on a Sonnet Tempo Card into my 4,1 Mac Pro to use a AE's Disk Cache, I set the disk cache to 100GB
Recently AE often reports that there is not enough available space on the drive for the cache when I start it up.  When I look at the drive in the OS, it says there is over 100GB available and the cache folder is 10GB in size.  A previous time the numbers were different but essentially the problem was the same - I should have a lot of free space but AE doesn't see it.
What the hell is going on?

That message does not say that the cache is full.
That message says that there is not enough room to safely store the amount of cache that you have specified.
So, the cache may only have 20GB in it now, but After Effects is telling you that if it fills to the full 100GB that you have specified, then you're going to run into problems.
This is meant as a polite forward-looking warning that you have set the total size of the folder too high for the amount of space that you have on your disk.
You should never fill a disk all the way full. You should always leave some free space. Opinions differ, but 20% is a good conservative amount to leave free.

  • Premiere Pro CC - Crash when opening because of network disk cache

I have had premiere fail to open for a while now on one of my secondary PC's. This computer was setup with a network drive as its disk cache/links to projects.
This is so multiple editors can work off the same RAID. Works perfectly, aside from the fact that windows somehow unlinked the network drive. Once this happened premiere fails to launch and crashes when starting the program.
I had got the network drive linked back up at one point and premiere launched again running with zero problems. Again windows messed up the network drive, and premiere again, does not work.
I need to reset the settings for premiere (the disk cache settings).
    THINGS I'VE ALREADY TRIED:
I already tried holding Ctrl + Shift to reset, did not work.
I already tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but the settings were not removed and program keeps crashing.
I would just relink the network drive and then once premiere launches change the disk cache and never do that again, but sadly the computer will not relink to that partical drive.
Let me know if you need any more details,
I'm running windows 8, latest version of CC (just updated). I have 32gig Ram, I7 processor overclocked to 4.4GHz, Nvidia Graphics.
    Thanks much

    Hey there!
Well now your post is over one year old but recently I had the same problem.
Solution was what you were thinking: Redirect the path. But where??? I searched the registry and there you have it:
    Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Common 8.0\Media Cache
There's a key called FolderPath. Set that to a local drive and Premiere should start again.
btw adobe: that's really a bad bad bug or misbehaviour. if something is not working software should ask for another solution instead of just crash...

  • After Effects on mac error message, Disk Cache, can't do anything (CS6)

    Hello,
    My name is Lukas.
Everytime when I open my After Effects, the render window opens up and an error about the Disk - Cache appears.
    I own the version 11.0.4.2 for CS6.
I cleared the DC already, I do have enough available Disk space, but I cant do anything.
All I can do is to open up the preferences Window and change Settings.
I can't do nothing in the rest of the menu bar (for example open up a new composition).
(I'm sorry for my english, my motherlanguage is german)
I would be very happy if you could help me with my problem!
    Thanks in advance!

Na dann erzähl uns doch nochmal alles richtig. Aus dem Gestammel wird keiner schalu, zumal du uns keinerlei Informationen gegeben hast, wo denn der Cache liegt, wie deine Festplatten organisiert sind und welches System du verwendest...

  • PS CS6 / Bridge / ACR 8.5 - Camera RAW Cache settings reset non-stop

Adobe Bridge/Photoshop doesn’t remember the folder path in Camera RAW Cache Settings in Camera RAW Preferences window. Every time when I want to set my own folder Camera Raw Cache and its maximum size, I click OK and return to Camera RAW Preferences, I see default path (C:/Users/Name/AppData/Local/Adobe/CameraRaw/Cache/) and maximum size as 1GB.
    [Win 7 64-bit, LR 5.5, Web&Design CS6]

    Problem is solved!
I delete folder "C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\". Then I start Lightroom and I pick my own folder in Camera Raw Cache Settings, set 20GB size and click OK. Now everything works fine. Bridge and PS also fine.

  • Issues with CS6. Signing in, Rendering, Disk Cache, No response from Bug Report.

    Hi,
I submitted these issues some time ago to ae bugs <[email protected]> and did not hear back. I am a long time AE user and usually have a good Adobe experience, but CS6 does not work smoothly for me, and I have not found much help with my issues including emailing support and posting to the site. I find the current website not very effective for tech support.
    - Every time I open CS6 it asks me if I want to continue the Trial and I have to go through the steps to sign in. This is frustrating since I have paid for Creative Cloud and this slows me down.
    - In several projects I have had to turn off "Enable Disk Caching" or it renders text in the upper left corner, no matter where it is actually placed.
    - General slowness, especially using Trapcode Form 2.0. In those cases the playback head in the timeline will not update for many seconds. Also, dragging keyframes around gets very exaggerated. If I drag a keyframe a few frames it will move way off the timeline.
    - 3D text layer render times are so long as to be unusable. (I realize this could be related to my system, but still very disappointing for a Quad Core machine).
(I have an Nvidia GTE 120 graphics card. 2.93 Quad Core, AE CS 11.0.1.12, OS 10.6.8)
    Any help/suggestions appreciated...
    Thanks,
    Paul

  • After Effects CS6 - huge Disk Cache?

    Hello,
Looked around on various adobe discussions/forums - so far can't find an answer to this.
I've just upgraded to AEFX CS6. AEFX gave me a warning about insufficient cache size on my drive - upon looking, I've seen my disk cache (users/library/prefs/adobe/after effects) has swollen up to 80 GB for a current project.
I am also using CS5 for the same project and the cache folder is a measly 4MB.
Any solutions? Why the difference between CS5 / CS6  in handling cache?
I suppose I can delete the cached files (via finder) but despite not having access to these files, is there any down side?
    Thanks in advance.
    D

The cache is "persistent" in CS6, so older cache files are not overwritten as long as they remain valid. And since CS6 tries to cache literally everything, not just the comp you currently work on, it produces a lot more data for pre-comps or layers with effects. If you don't want it to grow that big, simpyl set a smaller size in the prefs or turn off the disk cache entirely.

  • Strange performance issue with 3510/3511 SAM-FS disk cache

    Hi there!
I'm running a small SAM-QFS environment and have some strange performance issue on the disk storage part, which somebody here might be able to explain.
Configuration: one 3510, dual controller, RAID-5 9+1, one hot spare and one disk not configured for whatever reason. The R5 logical drive hosts a 150GB LUN for SAM-QFS metadata (mm in SAM-FS speak) and a 1TB LUN for data (mr in SAM-FS speak). Further, there are two small LUNs (2GB, 100GB) for some other purpose. Those two LUNs have nearly no I/O. All disks are SUN146G. Host connection is 2GBit, multipathing enabled and working.
Then the disk cache became too small, and the customer added a 3511 expansion unit with SUN300G disks. One logical drive is a RAID-1, 1+1, used for NetBackup catalog. The other is a RAID-5, 8+1, providing two LUNs: 260GB SAM-FS metadata (mm) and 1.999TB SAM-FS data (mr).
For SAM-FS, the LUNs form two file systems: one "residing" in the 3510, the other "residing" in the 3511 expansion. Cabling is according to the manual and checked several times by several independant people. Operating system is Solaris 10, hardware is a V880.
The problem we observe: SAM-FS I/O on LUNs on disks inside the 3510 is fine. With iostat, I see 100MB/s read and 50MB/s write at the same time. On the SAM-FS file system which is running on the two LUNs in the 3511, the limit seems to be at 40MB/s read/write. Both SAM-FS file systems are configured the same in regards of block size.
In case I have activity on both SAM-FS file systems, I see 100MB/s+ on the LUN running inside the controller shelf and another 40MB/s on the disk runnin in the 3511 expansion chassis. So, the controller is easily capable of handling 150MB/s.
Cache settings in the 3510 controller are default I think (wasn't installed by me), batteries are fine.
Is this 40MB/s we experience a limitation by the expansion shelf? Don't think so. Anybody has any ideas on this? What parameters to check or to change? Any hint appreciated. I can also provide further details if needed. Thank you.
    wolfgang

SUN300G disks sound like 300GB FC disks.
Depending on how many files are in the SAMFS file system, sharing the mm and mr devices on the same RAID array can be a pretty horrible idea. In my opinion and experience, it's almost always better to NEVER put more than one LUN on a RAID array. Period. Putting more than one LUN on an array results in IO contention on that array. And large, unnaturally configured (9+1? Why?) RAID arrays will have problems from the start.
What are the block sizes used on the RAID arrays? It wouldn't surprise me to see that the RAID array on the expansion tray has a very large block size. Larger block sizes are, in general, not better. Especially for SAMFS metadata - which IIRC is something like 8k or 16k blocks.
I suspect what is happening is most of the metadata updates are going to the mm device on the new array, contending with the IO operations on the file data.
How much space is left on each mm device? What does "iostat -sndxz 2" show when you're having the IO problems?

  • LR 5.5 - Camera RAW Cache settings reset non-stop

Lightroom doesn’t remember the folder path in Camera RAW Cache Settings section in File Handling tab in Preferences window. I want to set my own folder Camera Raw Cache and its maximum size but every time Lightroom sets default path (C:/Users/Name/AppData/Local/Adobe/CameraRaw/Cache/) and also maximum size as 1GB. When I set all the parameters Camera RAW Cache and click OK or switch between the tabs in Lightroom preferences window or restart Lightroom and I return to the File Handling tab all the data is reset to default. The same happens when I want to change the parameters Camera RAW Cache from Adobe Bridge and Photoshop.
    Second question:
When I use DNG file format with Embed Fast Load Data option in the folder Camera RAW Cache the “DAT” files doesn’t appear. Is it connected with the use of Embed Fast Load Data option? When I use the original NEF files from my Nikon “DAT” files appear.
    [Win 7 64-bit, LR 5.5, Web&Design CS6]

I have no trouble placing my Camera Raw cache where I want to put it. Perhaps deleting your Preferences file would help with that problem.
Yes, if you embed fast-load data in your DNGs, LR will use that instead of the CR Cache.

  • Setting Disks/Caches/Vault for multiple projects - Best Practices

Please confirm a couple assumptions for me:
    1. Because Scratch Disk, Cache and Autosave preferences are all contained in System Settings, I cannot choose different settings for different projects at the same time (i.e. I have to change the settings upon launch of a new project, if I desire a change).
    2. It is good practice to set the Video/Render Disks to an external drive, and keep the Cache and Autosave Vault set to the primary drive (e.g. user:Documents:FCP Documents). It is also best practice to save the Project File to your primary drive.
And a question: I see that the Autosave Vault distinguishes between projects, and the Waveform Cache Files distinguishes between clips. But what happens in the Thumbnail Cache Files folder when you have more than one project targeting that folder? Does it lump it into the same file? Overwrite it? Is that something about which I should be concerned?
    Thanks!

    Yes

I don't. And I don't think it matters. But you should back that file up to some other drive (like Time Machine).

    I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Read this and free up 300GB or more of wasted After Effects disk cache space...

I noticed on my MAC that the After Effects disk cache folders took up 400GB of space, even though I told it to only use 100GB. I run my disk cache on an SSD so space is valuable.
I investigated and realized that every time After Effects has a new version update, it creates a new disk cache folder for that new version number (ie. 12.2). However, the disk cache folders for all the previous versions (11.0, 12.0 and 12.1) all remain on the hard drive wasting 300GB of space.
If you're not using disk cache or didn't update from previous versions then none of this will apply to you.
To empty the 12.x abandoned disk cache space...
Just click on the "Empty Disk Cache" button in the After Effects settings
You can also manually delete the 12.0 and 12.1 folders from /Users/(username)/Library/Caches/Adobe/After Effects/ assuming you have the current 12.2 version folder.
To empty the 11.x abandoned disk cache space...
This has to be done manually and is located in the /Users/(username)/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/11.0/ folder
Delete the folder that starts with /Adobe After Effects Disk Cache... (ie. "Adobe After Effects Disk Cache - Peter’s iMac.noindex")
In OSX, the User's library folder is hidden so you will have to first unhide it to manually delete disk cache folders...
In finder, go to your user home folder
Next, from the finder menu select VIEW -> SHOW VIEW OPTIONS
Finally, add a checkmark beside "Show Library Folder" in the view options window
    -Pete

The manual deletion of the 12.0 and 12.1 folders is not necessary with After Effects CC (12.2). The command in After Effects CC (12.2) to clear the disk cache will clear the 12.1 and 12.0 folders, too.
    http://blogs.adobe.com/aftereffects/2013/12/after-effects-cc-12-2-december-2013-update.htm l
(Yes, that is implied in your steps above, but I wanted to make sure that everyone reading realized this.)

  • Photoshop RAM versus scratch disk/cache use

I recently ugraded my Mac to a new (to me) Power Mac G5 Dual 2GHz with 4GB RAM and two HDDs, one with OSX at 500GB and the other with 250GB (currently empty).
I followed the Adobe recommendations on setting up Photoshop CS2 for performance. I have my cache and scratch disk as the second (250GB) disk and therefore a different volume to the operating system. This disk is currently empty. In the cache settings, Photoshop sees 3072MB of the 4GB memory as available to it, and I have set the amount that PSCS2 can use to 100% (as Adobe states this is OK if you have 4GB or more of RAM).
With nothing else running on the Mac, when I open a tiff image of around 70MB, I can see in the status line at the bottom of the image window that the Efficiency is sometimes 100% but often drops to below 90% and down to 75% when doing image manipulations, which means that the scratch disk is being used (Adobe states that the Efficiency should be 95-100% when all actions are being done in RAM). However, when I look at the RAM status, there is still 2.5GB free, so PSCS2 has obviously not used all the RAM available to it when it starts using the scratch disk. I can also see that activity on the 250GB drive occurs when I do these manipulations, so the scratch disk is being accessed rather than actions being done in RAM
The only time I see the available RAM figure reduce is when I open multiple images. If I open ten 70MB tiff files then the RAM usage goes up a lot.
So my question is, why does PSCS2 use the scratch disk almost immediately when I manipulate an image even when I have told it to use 100% of the available 3072MB of available RAM? Have I missed a setting somewhere?
    Any help or guidance appreciated.

    Hi Buko
Thank you for your response. I did work through the optimisation guidelines before posting my message. I guess it is more about understanding why PSCS2 used the scratch disk when there is over 2GB of memory available, but I accept that it does what it does for good reason.
Could you let me know what the partitioning of my scratch disk will achieve? I did not see that in the optimisation guidelines, but I will definitely give it a try. I am interested to now what is actually does.
    Thanks again, much appreciated.

  • Disk cache

Just started using AE and need to know why is it every single time I open AE I get a warning that my disk cache is full and I always have to go through the process of emptying it. when I've never even completed one project.
I understand the RAM part, but I don't understand why it's full all the time, and as soon as I empty the disk cache it's okay, then I'll practice doing a project and usually delete it after I'm done, then when I open AE the next day to start on a new project, it's the same thing every time.  Empty the disk cache.  It seems so unnecessary, therefore, I have assumed that I must be doing something wrong.

Thank you for responding.  I use a PC and I only have 4 Gigs of RAM, and I know I should have at least 8 to fully utilize Premiere Pro, but it is what it is.  I also use Microsoft Security Essentials.  But, what I didn't understand is that it only happens when I access AE.  I've got lots of videos on Premiere CS6, and I never, ever get that warning about the disk being full when I access it.
Oh well.  When it becomes a real problem I'll make sure I get to the bottom of it.  For now, it's not keeping me from doing anything, but it's quite annoying.

  • Firefox cache settings no longer working

Firefox cache settings that were working are no longer working, in Windows XP (x86) and Windows 7 (64).
By this I meant that I had set the cache to a ram-drive, but that is no longer being used, the cache is being written to disk instead in what is apparently the new default location, and my customized cache settings are ignored.
I've tried resetting Firefox to default and then re-applying them, but the problem still exists.
This is for FF 19+, but not sure when the problem first occurred - perhaps an earlier version too.
Is it no longer possible to re-direct the cache directory? How do you do it?

For jumpListCache , I found that setting browser.taskbar.lists.enabled to false prevents their capture:
