AE CS6 not recognising graphics card with CUDA

Having invested in Production Premium CS6 this year, I wanted to make the best of it, and upgraded both motherboard and graphics card to take advantage of the promised CUDA processing. Having done so, AE (Edit > Preferences > Preview) has consistently refused to recognise the card, and I am looking for advice on what I can try next.
For information, my PC system involves Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, an Asus P8Z68-V/PRO/GEN3 MoBo, 16GB RAM, and the new graphics card, a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti (2GB DDR5). I have installed the latest Nvidia driver, 310.70, and the CUDA Toolkit v 5.0. It is possible to run the samples supplied with the CUDA Toolkit, and an application called CUDA-Z functions, both of which seem to suggest to a non-programmer like myself that the 1,344 CUDA processors on the card are working just fine.
It was suggested on another forum that I edit the file raytracer_supported_cards.txt which is in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects CS6\Support Files to include the GTX 660. Other people have found this to work - i.e. that after doing so and resaving the file, AE recognises their card and its CUDA capability. I haven't.
I've run out of ideas. Does anyone please have either an explanation for the AE response, or a fix?

I've had the same problem-- Premiere Pro and After Effects not recognizing my new GPU.
The problem is in the file PP looks for is cuda_supported_cards.txt
And AE looks in raytracer_supported_cards.txt
If your GPU isn't listed, then the programs assume you don't have the right CUDA enabled card. The problem is that Adobe has a hard time keeping current with the CUDA cards as they are produced. For example, I had a geForce GTX 670 card, which was not listed in those files, but the geForce 570 card was. Clearly, the 670 was just an improvement over the 570, but Adobe hadn't had a chance to update those txt files.
It has nothing to do with Java or anything else. It's just the txt file that contains the names of the GPUs.
Also, for AE, it isn't just 3D modeling or ray trace that gets affected. It's also speeds up hardware accelerated panels and the Cartoon Effect. Plus, I've got 4 GB on the Nvidia card and the CUDA cores going to waste if I don't maximize my use of the GPU I paid extra money for.
In my case, I'm using a souped up laptop with a geForce gtx 675mx chip. And I saw a noticeable increase in render speed once I modified the two txt files.
Yes, it would be nice if Adobe were faster in updating the cards in their txt files, but in the meantime, if you have a card that is clearly an update of an older card (like going from the 570 to the 670), then I think it is a pretty safe bet.
The only other thing to remember is that if you update PP or AE, via the Creative Cloud, or otherwise, your carefully prepared txt files are likely going to get overwritten, and you'll have to re-edit them to include your card.
Hope that helps.

  • Imac Graphics cards with Premiere Pro cs6

    Hello
I just changed over to Premiere Pro cs6 from avid and fcp 7/x. I am already sure i made the right decision. I love the interface, i really love it! and cant wait to get stuck into it properly.
I just bought a brand new, all singing all dancing 27 inch imac full spec 32gb RAM with a NIVIDA Geforce GTX 680MX 2048mb card. However pro cs6 by default is using the “Mecuary playback engine sofware only” instead of the “Mecuary playback engine Acceleration [CUDA] and i cant change it. Does it cs6 not support this card and if so will it in the future?
Any help would be greatly apericated!
    Kind regards
    Philip

    Hi Paul
You mention last week that you had  the same problem as me with your new iMac and graphics card with cs6.
I was just onto  Adobe and they told me that they could not assist.
Can you tell me who you death with?
I am really keen to get this card running!

  • Problems with Photoshop CS6 Recognizing Multiple Graphics Cards

    Hi,
I have a quad monitor setup with two graphics cards with the latest drivers downloaded today and installed directly off of the manufacturer's websites:
    1) AMD Radeon R9 200 Series 4GB GDDR5
    2) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 1GB GDDR5
I have Photoshop CS6 64-bit (along with the rest of the Adobe Design and Web Premium) installed on my computer - which I uninstalled and reinstalled today also - and it's claiming that it has detected an error with my display driver. The Graphics Processor Settings box in Preferences is greyed out, and I've used the shift+ctrl+alt to reset preferences and check again to no avail. I've also set both of my graphics cards to turn on OpenGL Triple Buffering and to let the 3D application decide the image settings. Here's my system info, where you can see that the GPU sniffer crashed and that no video card is detected:

Yes Adobe states if you use more then one GPU adapter they should be the same else Photoshop may have problems. Photoshop CC and CC 2014 GPU FAQ
Are you using more than one video card?
Multiple video adapters can cause problems with GPU-accelerated or enabled features in Photoshop. It's best to connect two (or more) monitors into one video adapter. If you have to use more than one video adapter, make sure that they are the same make and model.
Otherwise, crashes and other problems can occur in Photoshop.
Note: Using more than one video adapter does not enhance Photoshop's performance.

  • Please help ... Ray-tracing on the GPU requires an approved NVIDIA graphics card and CUDA 5.0 or later?

    Hi there,
I'm have a bit of an issue with After Effects and Premiere.
    After Effects:
Keeps asking for Ray-tracing on the GPU requires an approved NVIDIA graphics card and CUDA 5.0
    Premiere crashes unexpectedly
    Can someone please help
    Much-ly appreciate

    Hi there,
Sorry took a while to get back to you guys. I have been having some issues with Premiere and Aftereffects CC.
    I recently bought an Apple Pro CTO - Intel Xeon E5 3.7 GHZ Quad-Core with 10MB of L3 Cache, 32GB (4x 8gb) 1866MHZ DDR3 ECC DDR3 RAM, 1TB PCIE-BASED Flash storage, DUAL AMD FIREPRO D500 GPUS with 3GB of GDDR5 VRAM, DUAL Gigabit NIC, 802.11AC, bluetooth, 6x thunderbolt2 ports, MAC OS X.
    Issue 1 - Aftereffects CC
Ray-tracing o the GPU requires an approved NVIDIA graphics card and CUDA 5.0
    Issue 2 - Premiere CC
Warp Stabiliser wasn't stabilising correctly and now doesn't work at all in premiere CC. I even tried to link to aftereffects but it still doesn't stabilise the shots correctly.
I use to operate PC before with Adobe CS6 and I didn't get any issue stabilising.
If you guys can point me what's the best way to get it to work correctly that would be magic.
Look forward to hear from you

  • Does the standard Intel HD Graphics 4000 in the 13 inch Macbook pro stand up to other graphics cards with dedicated memory ( 1GB of memory for instance)?

Does the standard Intel HD Graphics 4000 in the 13 inch Macbook pro stand up to other graphics cards with dedicated memory ( 1GB of memory for instance)? I need a laptop for college and the Engineering program suggests a dedicated video card with minimum 1GB of video memory.

I have a Intel HD 4000 in my Mac Mini (late 2012), and it's okay for what I need it.
    However:
    - there were a few issues with flickering on the video output to external monitors. These were solved through a firmware update that came with OSX 10.8.3 - for the majority of the users. There is apparently still a small group of users that still has issues. You can read long threads about this here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4472316?start=0&tstart=0
    and here
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4490924?start=0&tstart=0
So for most of us (me included) this issue is solved, but it seems that certain displays / monitors don't work well with the intel HD4000, don't know if there is a pattern or a list of monitor models...
    - there was an issue with the color calibration on the HDMI output. No matter how much you tried to calibrate, the results remained unsatisfying. All light colors were crushed to white, wrong contrast, ...
You can read about this here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1482487
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4480354?start=0&tstart=0
The same firmware update improved this a little, good enough for me, but I can imagine it's not good enough if you do graphic work and need reliable colors from your monitor. On HDMI output, the thunderbolt/MDP output is fine. So it's mainly a dual monitor setup issue.
If it's for graphic work, I'd go for a Mac Book Pro with dedicated GPU !

Hi All, if anyone can help me fix this error I will be most aprreciative.
I get this error when I open After Effects.
Ray-tracing on the GPU requires an approved NVIDIA graphics card and CUDA 5.0 or later. For now, ray tracing will use the CPU.
After installing CUDA 5.0 or later, restart your computer.

I've found out yesterday evening about the GPT Drive, when I saw it on my laptop which works fine with UEFI fastboot mode.

  • 3 or 4? Graphics cards with MPE acceleration!

Being an experimenter with my new Asus X99-E WS motherboard after running about 50 runs of PPBM8 and having four x16 slots which theoretically can run simultaneously at 16 lanes, today I could not resist running a third GTX graphics card.  In slot 1, I installed my GTX 780, slot 3 had a GTX 770 and Slot 5 had my GTX 970. (slot 7 has an Areca ARC-1883i) and I have a Samsung XP941 which also uses 4 PCIe lanes.
Amazing all 3 Graphic cards contribute to the MPE acceleration!  If my 860 watt power supply had more output connectors and could handle the load I would have tried a fourth card.  My best score with our GPU assisted MPEG2-DVD timeline export was 13 seconds with two GPU's and with the third GPU added I got a 23% improvement to 10 seconds. Here is GPU-Z showing all GPU's are working simultaneously.  I had to duplicate the sequence 4 times to give me time to collect data.
Premiere 8.2.0.65 and notice that the GTX 970 is working harder than the other two

I guess I should have said that the GTX 970 is trying to work harder than the other two.  Notice that the Memory Clock on the GTX 970 SC which should be 1750 MHz according to the specifications falls back to 1500 MHz when running any CUDA application, while The GTX 780 SC is running at the its specified 1750 MHz and notice my GTX 770 SC is easily overclocked to the 2000 MHz
If you have not paid attention to these confusing GPU Memory Clock speeds before there is no consistency which speed is specified.  For instance they might specify 1500 MHz one place (like GPU-Z) and 3000 MHz in another test like NV-Z and on some specification sheets say Effective Memory Clock 6000 MHz and/or 6 Gbps
MPE acceleration is dependent on CUDA cores and Memory Speed (Memory Bandwidth) and now on architecture.  nVidia claims Maxwell is 1.4x more effective that Kepler was.
I am exploring the Maxwell memory speed reduction without success so far.  But it is not an Adobe problem the same thing happens on any CUDA application and also is on the GTX 980.
I still believe the GTX 900's are a great performer for medium to high end cards.

  • Windows 7 Not Recognising 8 Cores With MacPro!!!

    Hi,
I am running Windows 7 on my 8 core (x2 quad) MacPro and only just realised after running the task manager that its only recognising and running on 4 cores instead of 8 cores??
Also, its running Windows 7 home premium pretty crap also, quite slugish with certain apps like firefox and slow opening video HD files
    Any ideas?
    Cheers

If you upgraded over Vista, the results can be "mixed"
I run Windows 7 Professional on 2006 Mac Pro (dual dual-core 2.0GHz 4GB RAM) as well as a couple of custom i7 builds, and they all run equally fine (and better than 10.6.3 does on Mac Pro).
The sluggishness is highly unlikely from using just one processor (2008 2.8?) as most people running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit do, usually Core i7 920 Bloomfield).
HP only supports one physical processor/socket, so you need to use Windows Anytime Upgrade for Pro to use dual processor.
Maybe you haven't updated your graphic card; the drive you are using to hold Windows (ideally its own hard drive). Some people put Windows 7 on an SSD in their Mac Pro.

  • Expansion - Mac Pro, Nvidia, Graphics Cards, 3d, CUDA

    Hello,
Are there any plans to make a Mac that is expandable and upgradable with regards to graphics cards? Specifically Nvidia cards. We are doing more and more 3d work and require Nvidia graphics cards for GPU rendering with CUDA. For doing any 3d work CUDA is a MUST. Even on the fastest CPU's, it's the difference between a 1976 Pinto, and a 2014 Lamborghini Aventador when it comes to rendering.
Thunderbolt expansion doesn't seem to be a possibility... While technically this should work, there is currently no support for graphics cards in external Thunderbolt chassis (to my knowledge)... and there are no drivers (nor are there plans to make any as far as I know) for Nvidia graphics cards for Mac's. I can only assume it is because there doesn't seem to be any way to expand these new Mac Pro's.
Without the ability to expand for these graphics cards, we (I and the company that I work for) are only left with a few options (as I see it).
    1)     Switch to Windows (Really?)
    2)     Linux
    3)     Create a render farm from old computers. (Not Ideal for several reasons, not the least of which is the ability to preview before final render.)
We are approaching the time for equipment upgrades, and we simply can't justifiy spending that amount of money for a computer that frankly will not do what we need it to do. Especially since a comparable PC at a third of the price, will.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Since silence is the only thing you get from apple on this subject here is a little help:http://www.tonymacx86.com/416-building-customac-buyer-s-guide-march-2014.html
This ongoing feud between adobe and apple leaves us, the users in a very bad position. We should have a choice.

  • Is it possible to upgrade the graphics card with my HP Envy DV7 - 7332EA

    Hi all,
I was hoping someone on here may be able to answer my question. I recently purchased a refurbished laptop from certain computer retailer, an HP Envy DV7-7332ea, it is an Intel i7, 16GB RAM and was supposed to come with a 2GB Nvidia GT635M. Long story short, said pc retailer did not tell me that the fault/refurbishment was with the graphics card and despite advertising it as being installed with the GT635M, it in fact had a shared Intel graphics card installed. Long story short after some truly horrific customer service - talking to my bedroom wall would have yielded the same level of responses - they have told me that the will not be fitting the correct graphics card - when pressed for an explanation or reason for this they have been unable to give me a technical explanation.
So, I'm assuming possibly the motherboard has been replaced as well which is preventing the graphics card from being upgraded. Now I realise that there could be numerous reasons this has happened, but I was hoping someone could answer me this.
Would the artchitecture of my laptop allow for a graphics card upgrade? If the motherboard has problems and these were resolved are the Envy range generally able to be upgraded?
    Thanks guys,

    Hi:
Unfortunately, the only way to upgrade the graphics adapter is to replace the motherboard with one that has the better nVidia GPU.
Doing that would cost about as much as buying a new notebook with the graphics solution you wanted in the first place.
