AE: pc won't connect, mac will

I've been searching both this(pc) forum and the Mac forum to find help with my pc/mac airport extreme issue.
My exact issue:
I connect to the internet through my AP card/AP/DSL modem.
Not sure if my settings are what they need to be, but I can connect fine.
The PC, in another part of the house, runs on windows ME (what the heck is that?!)and has a wireless WMP54 adapter installed.
No signal on the PC end, no AP - nothing. At this point, I have no idea what the heck the settings should be on my end, or the PC's end. Am I setting up a network, a client...DHCP, manual DHCP, Airport or ethernet??? I throw my hands in the air and admit "I'm a wireless idiot!!"
I've been searching both this(pc) forum and the Mac forum to find help with my pc/mac airport extreme issue. I know it has to be an issue with the settings on my end, but there are so many options it is confusing. I'm doing the best I can to educate myself, but it's all starting to get fuzzy.
On top of getting the PC connected, what about security? I've recently had my mac's backside hacked open, so just two days ago, I backed up my HD & erase installed everything (partially my fault for lack of turning on the proper security measures). I'm very concerned about making sure I set this up as securely as possible.
At this point I'd sell a kidney to get everything working & secured.

Tough problem, but the best place to start would be on your Mac.
Open System Preferences in the Apple Menu and then click on Network. Choose Airport in the Show: menu then note the Airport ID number and the name of your wireless network. Click on TCP/IP then note the setting for Configure IPv4. From this point, it's hard for me to help because I don't know whether this is being configured by automatic or manual DHCP, BootP, or completely manual. This can give you an idea of the settings you need to make on your PC's wireless connection wizard. Hopes this at least gets you started.

  • IChat 4 won't connect (neither will any other IM clients)

    Hi,
I tried to login to iChat 4 this morning, and I get this error:
Could not connect to AIM (username)
The connection could not be completed because it timed out. Try again.
I tried again, same error. I also tried Adium and MSN Messenger, and neither of those connect either. All three used to work, and I'm not sure how to figure out what changed. Can anyone help me please get IM back on my MacBook?
    Thanks!
    Libby

In System Preferences any Allow Specific listed App will be marked with a "Certificate" and any port that app uses will be allowed for that App. Other apps that want to use the same port(s) have to be allowed as well independently.
Sometimes some routers and modems have an issue with ichat in the AIM Buddy list using port 5190 on TCP to Login and UDP to send files and get Buddy List info back to you.
In iChat > Preferences > Accounts > Sever Settings tab you can change the default Login port (5190) to 443 when the account is Off-line (logged Out).
Of course any ports iChat uses have to be opened or allowed in the modem or router.

  • AFP won't connect - SMB will ...

    Hi there,
I've done a few searches and found this is an issue but can't find a fix.
I've got a G5 running 10.3.9 and in 1 of the users I can't connect to the Ethershare server. In fact it won't let me put in a user name and password, just goes straight to can't connect error window.
It's looking like AFP/keychain/cache issue to 1 server to me as we also have a pc server at the problem site and I can get to it via SMB login. I can also get to a server in another state ok so I'm now very confused.
I've deleted some prefs but that didn't work, I deleted the whole user keychain and that didn't work. I also cleaned the caches of the user only using TCC and still no loggee inee...
I can however get to the server in the admin user and as a work around have made a new user - macuser of course ! - and both can get to the servers needed.
I would like to fix the usual user though if possible, can anyone fill me in on a fix ?
    Mitch

    Thanks LittleSaint -
"In the user's Library/Preferences folder is an invisible file called .GlobalPreferences. Delete that."
That's the kind of thing I was looking for seeing I'd tried prety much everything else - I'll give that a go and see what happens.

  • Server Admin won't connect, ssh will...

    Hi,
I am no longer able to connect to my server using Server Admin. It gets stuck on 'loading' for ages and then says the server doesn't exist. I can connect fine with ssh, and there's nothing in system.log or servermgrd.log. I've tried deleting the Server Admin prefs as mentioned in the archives but to no avail.
    Any help appreciated.

James: obvious stuff, I know, but is there a packet filter between your admin machine and the server? Have you tried restarting servermgrd (sudo killall -HUP servermgrd would do it) or re-booting the entire server?

  • Time Capsule won't connect to anything

I was using my time capsule for about a year and never had an issue until I moved. Now that I'm in the new house, no devices will connect to it except my MacBook Pro. Hard wired LAN or over WIFI my smart TV won't connect neither will my PlayStation or my iPhones or iPad. Nothing. Again... My computer connects over WIFI but nothing else. And nothing works directly hooked up from the Time Capsule to any device via LAN cable.

TC needs a full factory reset when put in a new network.
It remembers far too much from the previous setup.
    So.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Do do a new setup .. if the modem you have is cable pure type modem.. the TC must be in bridge.. you MUST turn off the cable modem for 20min for the MAC address capture to time out.. then power up the modem and power up the TC which is in DHCP + NAT mode.
If the modem is a router.. put the TC in bridge mode..
If you run into troubles give us more info.
what modem.. make and model and type.
What model is the TC.. A1xxx from the base.
    What version firmware?

  • 8100 on TMo. 4.5 OS won't connect to internet

Hi guys. I followed the procedure that was suggested at this link to upgrade my Pearl to the 4.5 OS.
The phone can't seem to pick up a data connection for the internet now, though it does still pull my email and my Google Maps works. Gmail won't connect, nor will my Opera Mini browser.
    Any help would be appreciated!
(Other random bits: 2 of MyFaves don't load, "About" link does not work)
Should I have gone through a different process? Will the 4.5 OS work OK with TMo?
    Thanks!

It certainly won't hurt to try sending service books again, at least.
    1. Options > Advanced > Host Routing Table > Menu > Register.
    2. Resend your service books from your carrier BIS site.

  • Firefox will not connect or open. Mac OS 10.6.8. I was working with many open tabs when Firefox stopped working. Now it won't connect. I have uninstalled and downloaded it several times.

I was working with many open tabs and firefox crashed. Now it won't connect to the internet at all.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

I'm now having trouble getting mac mail to work on my mac. The mobile me account works great on iphone and ipad but it won't connect to my mail account. Password is correct. What else can I do? Using OS10.68

    HI,
The Apple IDs from @mac.com and @me.com (Older MobileMe and more recent iCloud Names) are also Valid AIM Screen names.
Any other sort of Apple ID is not a Valid AIM Name.
A Google ID that is associated with Google Mail Account (And has "Talk" enable on your Google Settings) can be used in iChat as  Jabber Name/ID.  (Google Run  Jabber server).
Jabber and AIM are different IM Services and it is not easy or straight forward to add Buddies from one Service to the Buddy List of another.  (As A Starting point consider it "impossible")
iChat 4 and 5 have links to the registration page of @Mac.com here with a "Get an iChat Account" button in the add (Account) screen  (You select @mac.com or MobileMe and then press the Button - Choosing AIM and then pressing the button used to lead to the AIM registration page but AIM moved their page).
Apple IDs can be any valid email (or an @mac.com or iCloud registration)
Therefore you could make a Google ID into an Apple ID.
However this will not be a valid AIM Screen Name the way @mac.com or MobileMe/iCloud ones are.

  • Mac Mini won't connect to internet using Apple products (Safari, iTunes, AppStore). Date and time are frozen to the moment CPU is booted up. Firefox works. Cannot update.

For the past few days my Mac Mini has been having issues.
Safari won't connect to internet, but Firefox does.
Time and date are frozen. Only resets when copmuter is re-booted.
Unable to update via App Store and iTunes won't connect either.
    Please advise.

    Hi again,
Let me ask for some better help for you that is familiar with this problem (if in fact it is a similar problem with the IP address and your ISP.
The other topic concerning this can be found at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2725608
It is a somewhat lengthy thread but may just apply to your situation.
Anyways I will see if I can call on some better help for you. Hang in there. Best to arm yourself with enough info before contacting Comcast so they might know what you are dealing with fully.
    littleshouders
edit: I have posted for some extra help for you that may have a better idea of what's going on if it is your ISP and their modem and how it handles the IP address causing Safari and iTunes not to connect. Hang in there it may take awhile but I'm sure someone will pop in to help.

  • HT4628 My Mac Air OSX10.8.5 won't connect to the internet as it says it has a self assigned IP address and thus cannot connect to the internet. I can only connect to a network by manually typing in the configuration specs. Please help.

My mac air OSX10.8.5 won't connect to the internet. It says it has a 'self assigned IP address and therefore cannot connect to the internet'. Network diagnostics is unable to the solve the problem. It happened suddenly for no reason and now I cannot connect except by typing in the configuration settings manually. Please help me!

Use the Airport Utility or log into your wireless device via http and ensure the DHCP/NAT service is enabled.  If accessing via HTTP, you will need to manually set an ip within your local subnet (eg: 192.168.0.x).

  • I just downloaded ios 7 but because I have an older version of iTunes, my phone won't connect. However, I can't download iTunes 11 because my mac is too old. Any suggestions?

Just downloaded ios 7. Now my iphone won't connect to iTunes. It says I need Itunes 11. However, I'm running OS 10.5.8 which ITunes 11 doesnt recognize. Any suggestions other than buying a new Mac?

Upgrade your Mac to OS X "Snow Leopard". You need an Intel Mac (no PowerPC).
    Purchase Snow Leopard from Apple:
    Online (US): http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    Online (UK): http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    Germany: http://store.apple.com/de/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Elsewhere: call the phone number in the Apple Online Store
    Apple's price is $19.99, £14.00, €18.
Once installed run Software Update which will update OS X to version 10.6.8. You can then download and install iTunes 11.

  • My mac won't connect to the router.

I am very new to macs and recently bought a Macbook pro, I have connected to my router a D-Link, DSL-G604T but when I enable WEP security the mac won't connect only my PC's will. I am prompted by the mac to put in my Encryption key but it still doesn't work. I am able to to set the router to WPA-PSK but get stuck on the length of the string that I am supposed to put in? Will this set up work better?? Very stuck mac virgin, pleas help.

First, I strongly suggest that you use WPA or WPA2 instead of WEP for your wireless encryption...but if you must use WEP & work in a mixed (PC/Mac) environment...
Always use Hex characters for WEP encryption. Either 10 Hex characters (for 40-bit WEP) or 26 Hex characters (for 128-bit WEP)
If you use an ASCII password or passphrase, then use either 5 ASCII characters (for 40-bit WEP) or 13 ASCII characters (for 128-bit WEP)
Note: Because manufacturers may use different algorithms to translate between ASCII & Hex, that this doesn’t always work, and is one of the leading causes of issues with keys.

  • AppleTV Stopped working - won't connect to my Mac/iTunes

Purchased AppleTV 3 days ago. Worked flawlessly. 2 hours ago, storm winds caused the power to blink in the other room (causing the Mac to shut off). The modem lights indicated it was powered up.
Since then no amount of troubleshooting will restore proper function:
I tried turning Home Sharing off and back on.
I have restarted the unit, restarted itunes, restarted my Mac (the computer is functioning normally).
I attempted to restore the AppleTV OS, but it won't connect to the internet.
I reset AppleTV and re-entered my ID and network settings (I can't login to Apple Store and "Setting date and time" goes on to infinity).
What else can be done about this?

I shut down to do some maintenance on my Mac (air-dusted the interior), now AppleTV will not connect - I turned 'sharing' off and on, made sure iTunes wa running, turned my modem off and on. I resorted to resetting AppleTV, still am stuck at 'Setting date and time'. What does reset router refer to, my computer? I normally connect to network via Ethernet 2 on my Mac.

  • Macs drop off and won't connect to BTHub - Macs an...

We've got 2 Macs in our house which keep dropping off the BT Infinity Broadband hub and won't connect again
    here's the thing:
The macs work fine on all other broadband at other locations
The other devices in the house work fine
It's just the combination of Macs and and our home BTHub broadband
recently it's got worse - the last few days more often than not the macs won't connect
    We've tried
    1. turning macs on and off
    2. resetting macs
    3. turning BT broadband hub on and off
    4. turning the Mac airport wifi on and off
    5. in network settings tried both automatically set to BTHub and manually.
    None of this has worked.
    This is so weird.
    Any ideas?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Separating the 2.4 and the 5GHz works straight away.
Go to bthomehub.home on a device that will connect (your phone will do fine)
    Advanced settings
Enter the admin password from the card on your router
    Continue
    Wireless
    5GHz
    Sync with 2.4GHz: No
SSID: add a 5 at the end so you can tell the difference
    Hit apply
Now forget the network on your Mac (System Preferences-Network-Wifi-Advanced)
There should now be two versions of your SSID in the list (the original and the one you added a 5 to)
Your mac should correct straight away to the 2.4GHz (so without the 5) but you'll probably need to put the password in the first time.
It's apparently a known fault in Macs that they struggle with the 5GHz internet
Good luck, if any of the steps are wrong please correct folks, this was very very frustrating for a long time and actually only took 5 minutes to fix!!
