AE render for realtime HD in Premiere

Hi all,
I'm working on a show shot on p2, 720p 23.976 mxf files. Editing is going great, but I'm doing some After Effects work that needs to be brought into the Premiere project. What format can i render to in AE that will allow realtime playback in my HD timeline without rendering in Premiere?
Thanks.

Hi Lucas,
At the moment, AE/PP don't have a DVCPROHD AVI or QT codec for the purpose you're suggesting. Even installing OnLocation, and the DV100 codec it provides, results in playback functionality only of said AVIs recorded in OL. PP does have DVCPROHD rendering capability, but neither AE or PP offer export. You have a couple options, in my mind:
1) As Craig suggests, render uncompressed AVIs from AE. They will need rendering at some point in PP, and they may or may not be realtime (depending on your drive speed, mainly), but it's the easiest and most logical solution.
2) Render out DV proxies from AE. Set up your export module for DV, 720x480, 1.2 PAR, 23.976. Import these into your project, and edit away--use scale to frame size to at least fill the frame. Granted, it's not going to look fantastic, but you'll at least be able to use the clips for timing purposes and such. When your edit is locked, you could render out uncompressed files as above, and replace the proxies with those. Just name them the same as the original DV versions, make the originals offline in PP, and then relink to the uncompressed versions. This kind of two-step is pretty common in the offline/online process.
3) Here's where you can get crazy with the CheezWhiz. I don't really recommend this, but if you're hell-bent, here goes:
Create a new DVCPROHD 720p/23.976 project. Make sure your render settings are set to DVCPROHD, and not Uncompressed in PP. If you have Dynamic Link (from the Production bundle), bring your comps into PP that way; otherwise, you'll have to render the uncompressed versions from AE and import them. Create a sequence and drop all your comps into it. As expected, the red render bar will appear--so hit Enter to render. Wait. When you have the green bar, save your project and close it.
Now here's the goofy part: open up your original project, and invoke the import command in whatever manner you choose. Navigate to the "Adobe Premiere Pro Preview Files/The Project You Just Rendered In" folder. Just highlight that folder, and hit the Import Folder button. Voila--you now have DVCPROHD MXF clips from your AE comps in your project. They'll playback in realtime, and will show no red render bar, unless you manipulate the clips in some fashion. You can obviously move these rendered files to wherever you choose, and import them if you prefer.
This is a really silly round-about way of doing this, but it works. I've actually started using this when I do heavily-effected sequences or have sequences with a lot of comps, and the render takes forever. I'll import the rendered files back into the project, rebuild the sequence, and then export to my destination of choice (ie. web format). Normally, PP will go back to the raw, uncompressed RGB frames when exporting a movie or via the AME, and that's of course preferable, but there are times where you just want to export something for client review quickly after a lengthy render. I don't really recommend this for FINISHED work, but in a pinch, it'll get you by.
Have fun!

  • Best workflow for DSLRs and Speedgrade / Premiere?

Can anyone suggest a workflow for DSLR footage using Premiere and Speedgrade? I would like to be able to roundtrip and do a light grade on clips and sequences before completed the offline edit. Is this possible? I know in the video tuts it seems to work for Red footage, but I couldn't get it to work for me with my 5d mark iii footage. It's all new to me having recently switched to Adobe from FCP and also to DSLR from camcorders. Thanks

Speedgrade isn't designed to go pre-edit, so right now there's no dynamic link with the other CS6 apps. It's intended to sit post-edit in a classical film studio workflow, with Sg ingesting only the final edited frames and exporting your production masters.
If you "send" a Premiere Pro sequence to Sg you will render out a single DPX image sequence (including effects and transitions, and without any references to edit markers or original filenames) and so importing that back into Pr would flatten your entire timeline to a single clip. Any changes to the Pr timeline and you'd have to do it all over again.
You can export an EDL from Pr and use that in Sg to read the native footage (provided it's compatible*), but  grading is not stored into the original files so it won't re-appear in your Pr timeline unless you manually re-import.
If you want to use Sg pre-edit, the options are:
Grade all your footage before ever touching Pr, export everything to lossless video or image sequences and work with those, forgetting about the original files completely (you'll need a bunch of disk space and hopefully a MOS shooting pattern, as your audio will be split out).
Grade a sample of every clip you're using, then save a Look for each one. Export the Looks as 3D LUT files (.cube) and use a plugin to apply them to your clips. Right now there's no official plugin for Premiere (Magic Bullet LUT Buddy isn't certified past CS5) but After Effects can apply both the .cube and the .look files via the "Apply Color LUT" effect. Note that some changes in Sg are not included in the Look, such as the choice of color space and tone curve, so what you see in Sg may not be what you get back in Pr.
I'm not downplaying the abilities of Sg, but it's a colorist's tool and doesn't sit very well in the CS6 unified concept of "one person can make a movie". It helps to think of it in terms of the union system in Hollywood - an editor never grades and a colorist never edits, so their tools look completely different, work completely different, and the electronic conversation only goes in one direction.
*Sg was designed with digital cinema in mind so it doesn't work with interlaced footage, plus it generally assumes you're feeding it log so be careful when picking defaults. It's one occasion where something like the Cinestyle fake-log profile for Canon DSLRs comes in handy.

  • Best practices for realtime communication between background tasks and main app

I am developing (in fact, porting to WinRT Universal App) an application connecting to Bluetooth medical devices. In order to support background connectivity, it seems best is to use background tasks triggered by a device connection. However, some of these
devices provide a stream of data which has to be passed to the main app in real time when it is active - i.e. to show an ECG on the screen. So my task ideally should receive and store data all the time (both background and foreground) and additionally make
main app receive it live when it is in foreground.
My question is: how do I make background task pass real-time data to the app when it is active? Documentation talks about using storage, but it does not seem optimal for realtime messaging.. Looking for best practices and advice. Platform is Windows 8.1
    and Windows Phone 8.1.

    Hi Michael,
Windows phone app has resource quotas, to prevent it from interfering with real-time communication functionality, background task using the ControlChannelTrigger and PushNotificationTrigger receive guaranteed resource quotas for every running task. You can
    find more information from
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/xaml/Hh977056(v=win.10).aspx. See Background task resource guarantees for real-time communication section. ControlChannelTrigger is not supported on windows phone, so you can have a look at PushNotificationTrigger
    class.

thats way too vague of a question... best what?  quality? size? playback?
best quality then use high bitrate, small size use low bitrate.

  • Table cell Render for one cell

    Hi all
I am hoping that someone can help me with a cell render for one cell only.
I am needing to make some cells bold.
What i was hoping is that there is a way of passing in a row and column number to make that cells font bold?
    Any ideas ??
I am building a List of accounts that I what to look like this.
    1-0000 Asset |Asset|Balance
    1-1000 Cheque Account |Bank|Balance
    1-2000 Credit Cards |Credit|Balance
    1-2020 Visa |Credit Card|Balance
    1-2030 Master Card |Credit Card|Balance

Create a renderer like you've done in the past:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=679718&start=2
The renderer knows the row and column you are doing the renderering on so you just need to add a conditional check:
    if (aBoldCell)
    setFont( getFont().deriveFont(...) );
    else
    setFont( table.getFont() );

I  have paid for elements 12 and premiere 12, and they refuse to open. WHY IS THIS  MR  ADOBE ????????????????????????????????????????????????

    Hello Barbara.
I  installed elements 12 and premiere 12 DVD on the 17/9/2014 in windows. I registered serial number's  DOB and password with ADOBE. It was installed successfully.I opened elements 12 today and edited and saved a file -no problem. This evening  when I opened elements 12 the organiser opened, I tried to open the editor but all I got was a request for my I.D. I posted above information, but it still will not open. I am pulling my hair out. I would appreciate any help from you please.  I get the impression that ADOBE don't want to know when you have a problem with their products.

    Hi,
which version of Premiere Pro are you trying to install? Also check your system compatibility for Premiere Pro CC as suggested by John. If you are trying to install CS6 or any of the previous versions then you can check the compatibilty from this link. http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/system-requirements-premiere-pro.html MAC OS 10.6.8 should work with Premiere Pro CS6, if your system meets the rest of the criteria. For Premiere Pro CC, 10.6.8 may not work. Check your OS if its a 32 bit or a 64 bit http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3696

    Jacqui,
I stongly believe that Steve has given you the best advice. Actually, it's the same advice that I would have given you, if I had seen your post first!
I can verify that his books will give you more info, and in a more usable form, than tutoring, or even in-class, hands-on schooling will. Almost anything that can be done with the program (he also has a companion book for Photoshop Elements, which is often bundled with PrE) is covered in easy to understand detail.
After reading through, and working along, his second bit of advice, Muvipix, is also sound. Between this, and Muvipix fora (Community tab), there have been very few questions that could not be answered. Muvipix also is a great resource for additional articles on how things are done, plus tutorials.
I also recommend that one take an hour and read through both the FAQ and Tips & Tricks articles, found to the right of the PrE forum main page. I would read Steve's book first, so terms, etc. would be most clear.
There are two on-line training sites, that get great reviews: www.lynda.com and www.ltotaltraining.com. I have not subscribed to either, but have used the materials furnished from them with various Adobe programs. I also have several of the lynda.com books on various programs, and they are well-written. Now, they are NOT one-on-one tutoring, which is what you are looking for. They also probably do not cover PrElements, but that is just my guess. If they do, they would be another good source of training, though it's through tutorials, and not direct instruction.
This is just my 02¢'s worth of thought.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

What websites, books, tutorials, and other resources have you found useful for learning to use Premiere Pro?
I want to make sure that we have a comprehensive list of good resources for Premiere Pro. See this page for a list of high-quality After Effects resources that I put together; I want something like this for Premiere Pro.
I'll start. In no particular order, here are some resources that I've found valuable:
    this forum (of course)
Premiere Pro Help documents and Help & Support pages in several languages
Community Help search for Premiere Pro
Getting started with Premiere Pro by video2brain
Premiere Pro CS5: Learn By Video by video2brain
video tutorials on Adobe TV and Video Workshop

    > I see mention above of Lynda.com, but either missed Total Training, or perhaps they have merged?
    I didn't mention Lynda.com.
And, no, Total Training and Lynda.com certainly haven't merged.
Total Training has some good Premiere Pro stuff, but it's not the first place that I'd point someone for Premiere Pro.
