AE uses huge amount of memory (computer low on memory error)

I'm not sure if its just me, but After Effects seems to use a huge amount of memory.
I'm not doing anything fancy:
I have a b/w image (2478*774) which I opened in AE. I created a comp (25 frames) with the same dimensions of the image.
On my timeline I have:
The image with one mask revealing the image from left to right.
A white solid with 4 masks (duplicated from the image). I use this layer only to create an edge on the part where the image will be revealed by its own mask.
According to my Windows Task Manager, AE starts out using 250k of RAM. But after working on my image as described above, after 20 / 30 minutes or so my AE uses about 9gb of RAM, showing a "Computer low on memory" error.
I can use "Purge > All Memory" and this will give me 20 minutes extra before running out of memory again.
Now I have upgraded from CS4 to CC just a few weeks ago and haven't used AE a lot since then, but somehow I do not believe this is normal behavior?
I am sure my memory isn't broken. I do a lot of heavy productions using 3D Studio Max without problems, and this problem never occurred to me on CS4.
I am working on Windows 7 with 16gb of RAM.
I have upgraded CC to the latest version (13,2).

Here is the screenshot.
I do have SP1 installed.

  • Crashing when rendering as well as using huge amounts of memory

When i try to render even small movies with basic effects (well photos i've put together into movies not even any videos) my computer crashes. When i go to task manager the memory usage during rendering is huge (even internet browsers with multiple tabs open don't go half that high) easily dwarfing everything else combined, and that's putting it lightly. It is also quite high even when not rendering but i think it's within expected levels for a program like this running on a home computer. I have tried running only adobe after effects and shutting down everything else that wasn't absolutely necessary but that still doesn't help. It doesn't crash immediately but renders for a few minutes and then my computer shuts down. The memory starts skyrocketing the second i hit render and continues to rapidly climb. Once it hits a certain point is when my compute shuts down. The reason i believe is the memory usage gets so high my computer is forced to shut down. I haven't used it in a while so i don't remember the exact amount of memory but im sure it was well over 10,000. It doesn't shut down slowly, my computer screen suddenly goes black and sometimes has trouble starting back up. My laptop is fairly new and pretty fast. i don't believe a super computer is necessary to run adobe after effects. Is there anything i can do to help after effects render successfully? I really don't want to buy a membership if i can't even use it. I could be completely wrong about the memory being the problem so please don't refrain from answering just because your solution has nothing to do with memory.

  • I AM STUCK WITH MOZILLA FIREFOX / NOT SHOWN ON MY LAPTOP SCREEN / USING HUGE AMOUNT OF RAM IN GENERAL - CAN YOU HELP????

    Hi,
I have copied these problem on you site, as I could explain better then what they did, wich my problem remain the same as they have. And part me explaining what is really happen to my Laptop.
''Mozilla/Firefox 4 will not SHOW on my computer SCREEN.
Firefox won't load onto my computer. I have Windows 7, and each time I try to run the program to install it, it tells me I have another version still waiting to be installed that requires my computer to reboot. When I check "yes" to reboot, my computer reboots but still no Firefox. When I try to uninstall the the old Mozilla program from my Control Panels, there is no Mozilla files or programs listed not in my list of programs but when I go directly to the Windows File on the C: Drive, there's a Mozilla program file there. WHen I go into that file check, I attempt to open the uninstall program. I get an error message that says something to the effect of: "the version Mozilla on this computer is not compatable with my OS." Something about it being and 86bit program. My Firefox 3.6 worked fine 2 days ago. What's wrong??? ''
'''Firefox 4 using huge amounts of RAM on sites with Java scripts
I have been observing Firefox using huge amount of RAM when I am on sites that use Java Scripts to rotate images. I have tried a couple of different sites and have monitored the RAM usage. With Java script enabled Firefox 4 continues to grow its RAM usage by about 10MB a minute. I have had the usage hit as high as 1.5GB. As a comparison I have monitored the same sites in Internet explorer and have not seen the same issue. - Just to eliminate a site issue.
Turning off Java Script solves the issue and eventually frees the RAM.

    My experince with Mozilla Firefox:
Here what really happen when I install the Mozilla Firebox on my La[top you can see the file is there but when I click the program to open its does not shown on the screen but when I check with WTM (Windows Task Manager) its shows that is ON and you can only witness the laptop going very slow and I have to reboot it, and I can not install any other Mozilla :( because of the same problem and all the above.

If it opens in safe mode, you may have a problematic add-on. Try the procedure in the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article.

  • Causes windows 7 desktop window manager (wdm.exe) to use large amounts of memory

Whenever I have Firefox4 open, it causes dwm.exe (Windows desktop manager) to use large amounts of RAM - It starts at about 100MB, quickly increasing to about 1GB over 20 seconds, then dropping back down to 100MB and so on. It does this continuously while Firefox4 is open, with the occasional "Your computer is running slow" message being shown by Windows.
Update: Only occurs when browser isn't on the primary display on a multi-monitor setup.

I had the exact same problem. DWM would use massive amount of memory when Firefox 4 was open on my secondary display, especially when scrolling with the mouse wheel. It would use so much that Windows 7 (8GB RAM) would turn off Aero. Going into Options>Advanced>General and unchecking "use hardware acceleration" fixed the issue. Of course now I can't take advantage of any hardware acceleration.

  • My program on Solaris 9 uses huge amounts of swap space

    hi,
i have written a program that uses very little memory but seems to use huge amounts of swap space in increments of 1.4GB. The initial install of the Solaris 9 only allocated 500MB of swap for 4GB of Memory. The swap space has now been increased to 16GB but the program seems to use more swap space.
The program uses an api to attach to up to 100 agents and (the peice i wrote) registers a callback to handle events from the agents, a small amount of memory is allacated to hold details of each agent but no more.
Can anyone shed any light on this as this program does run on other platforms with any issues.

are you sure you are release memory, what language are you using?
you can reboot the system and follow the memory process using vmstat and swap -l, after that run your program only one time, and run the command again so the memory after should be the same that the initial before you run your process, if not , you program is collecting memory and is not releasing it.
    Good luck,

  • Since few days iPhone 4 suddenly uses huge amount of data and battery, how to find out which App is guilty?

    Hi Community,
since Friday my iPhone 4 startet using huge amounts of mobile data and rapidly wastes battery lifetime (50% in 3 hous!) It also gets quite warm even when I don't use it at all.
I suspect an app does this, because in flight mode battery is ok.
How do I find out which app is to blame without having to uninstall all apps?
    Thanks for your help.
    Kind regards

You need to look into using the SQL*Loader utility:

Also, Oracle supports BULK inserts using PL/SQL procedures:

  • Firefox 8 is using massive amounts of memory, currently 2 G with only a few tabs open.

I just upgraded to Firefox 8, but it is using such enormous amounts of memory that my computer has slowed to a crawl. According to Task Manager, memory usage is now down to 1.3G but still that's so much that it's hard to see what I'm typing. The previous versions of Firefox didn't use nearly so much. If this can't be fixed, I will have to use Google Chrome or IE even though I much prefer Firefox. Closing tabs in Firefox maxes out CPU usage, and this is a new computer with lots of memory. I think this is a bug. I don't want to have to go in and disable features that I have been using. Can you tell me when there will be a fix for this?

I'm running Firefox 8.0.1, no add-ons, no themes, no bells or whistles. Firefox takes up large amounts of my memory and brings my computer to a crawl. I'm well educated in A+ Network+ and Cisco CNA I am by far a very educated user and can not solve this problem myself.
I hate to say it, but Firefox is slipping in quality and I may have to switch to Opera if this problem can not be resolved. It's been an issue since v.5 and continues to be a pain.

  • Lightroom uses huge amounts of HDD space (temporarily) from my main drive when exporting?

I'm having a HUGE issue with Lightroom using massive amounts of HDD space on my main drive when I'm trying to export photos.
The photos are on external HDD and are being exported to the same HDD. The space being used on the C: Drive (main HDD) is upwards of 19GB, while the exported photos are only taking up a very small fraction of that size once saved...
What gives? This is causing Lightroom to fail most times because it is running out of space on my HDD while it exports.
As soon as a close Lightroom the C: drive goes right back to where it was as if nothing happened at all.

I have and the same thing happens. I'm wondering if it's an issue with my
    main drive being an SSD.
I've gone so far as to direct link the AppData folders (local and roaming)
for Adobe to my secondary drive thinking it was temporary cache, but the C
drive still gets used and it drops by about 1GB a minute during export.

  • Time Machine uses huge amount of processing power

When TM decides to do an incremental backup, the backupd process ***** up a huge amount of my processing power, typically upwards of 45%, causing severe delays and slowdown. Sometimes it's doing it in conjunction with mdworker, but not usually. Is there a way to make Time Machine less processor-intensive? It's really obnoxious.

I have not noticed that, but it takes less than a minute on my machine, so I may have missed it.
If you have a slow processor, it will certainly make a bigger "dent" on your system, but then, so does any major app or file transfer.
I suppose it would be possible to give it higher positive nice level.

  • After closing firefox, firefox still remains in memory with use of huge amount of memory

    Hello,
I'm now using 10.0.1 but the behavior started around version 7.x i believe and it's becoming bigger witch every update?.
    My configuration.
P4, 2.6 Ghz 512 MB memory, 120GB harddrive, Windows XP sp3 with all the updates.
While using firefox to explore the internet and using Scrapbook to save the pages that i want (Familytree search of our name in the past, present and..) firefox becomes terrible slow, hugh need of resources of swap memory up to 1,2 GB, i want to close firefox. After a 10 to 20 seconds firefox disappears from the screen but when i open (ctrl-alt-del) windows Taskmanager the process is still going on and often even needs more memory for several minutes (> 5) and i have to kill the process to go on. If i restart firefox after that it's treapears like the normal firefox but after a while the same thing happens again.
Sorry for the (perhaps) mistakes in my writing but englisch is not my native language.
    Theo Smallenbroek

Some activities may use quite a bit of memory, and if memory is low on the sytem Firefox is forced to page and slow down. Does the problem occur only when you do certain tasks or use a particular site. Does it only occur while you use "Scrapbook" - whatever that is, and have you tried using Firefox in its [[safe mode]]
There is a posibility that the problem is malware related.

  • Firefox keeps taking up a huge amount of memory, slowing my whole Mac down a lot. Apple can't seem to help. Is there some sort of patch to fix this?

If I don't keep closing down Firefox, when I check in the Activity Monitor it sometimes takes up more than a gig of memory, but I'm not doing anything that should take that much. Please can anyone help? It slows my whole system down, giving me that annoying beach ball all the time.

  • Icloud photos use different amount of memory on ipad and iphone. Anyone know why?

i Recently set up photos library on icloud. I have the same number of pictures on both my ipad and iphone, yet the memory usage is nearly double on the iphone. i can't think of a reason for this. Does anyone have an explanation?

So does that mean, that if I have more available memory on one of the devices, then the pictures will be stored at a higher resolution?
I have both devices set to optimise the pictures, There are the same number of pictures on each device, yet on the iPad they use 150mb but on the iphone they use 300mb
There is a little more space available on the iPhone, so maybe the resolution they are stored at, is varied according to space?

  • If your kmail uses insane amounts of memory - here's a solution

Okay, this works for me, not sure if it will work for everybody.
Recently, after KDE 4.4.0 upgrade I think, I noticed kmail taking up like 500mb of residential memory, sometimes even 1g of it. This is insane, I thought.
After a short research I found the problem. For some reason it tried to load up all my mail into memory. Since I got over 0.5gig of mail, that's how much it took. After a thorough cleaning, I only left like 30mb of mail, and voila - kmail (after restarting it) takes only ~40mb of memory!
I'm just posting it for people with similar problems.
Oh, by the way - it was no memory leak, the process took up 500mb just after starting. It only grew worse with few hours of usage (up to about 1gig).

    Been here, done that ...
I had this very same duplication problem really bad a few months ago. I deleted everything as you suggested. The problem started back up literally the next time I synch'd. I did the deletion thing again but this time deleted my Entourage Sync Preferences and iSync preferences and that seemed to resolve the problem for a short period (about a month). Did it all again then I installed MobileMe a few weeks later and the problem came back. Got rid of it once again and sure enough, a month later (thought it was gone), it's back.
I just went through and deleted the duplicate entries again but not the preferences. I'm going to do some test entries to see if it matters where you enter in a calendar entry, if it's started on the iPhone, Entourage, or Calendar. I doubt Calendar because I never put them into Calendar.
Any body else having this problem who could offer some insight? It would be appreciated.

  • Appleworks (6.2.4) suddenly using huge amounts of cpu

My appleworks 6.2.4 has suddenly started using very high cpu everytime i select it as the active app the cpu % goes up to 100% and it gets delayed entering text.
Very odd - never had a problem with applework before as far as i know
Anyone help me trouble shoot this issue - is this something obvious ?
    Many thanks
    twz

Michael's link isn't working for me, but I'm guessing you have run into the "Recent Items bug" & it has been around since AppleWorks 6 was released in March, 2000. It can make it appear that AppleWorks has frozen or failed to launch. The user tip by Dale Gillard, AppleWorks slow? Spinning ball appears?, explains a lot.

  • Adobe Reader program uses huge memory in OS X. How to reduce it or any settings to change?

Lately I started to do alot of research on paper works for University projects. Most of the downloaded papers are based on .pdf extension. As usual, I read these files via Safari or open it separetly via Adobe Reader itself.
While working on Papers, I noticed that my machine's memory spiked to 7 GB ++ almost reaches 8GB of memory usage. This is unusual. At one point, I ran Java programs and simulatenous opened up many pdf format files format on my safari browser, it went unresponsive and unable to use keyboard & trackpad. Had no choice, had to hard reboot.
Contacted Apple support and reported the issue on unresponsive to them. They provided following KB to troubleshoot further:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4636
After that, I never encounter unresponsive issue but I have question Adobe reader program. This program uses huge amount of memory and I would like to know if there is anyway I can reduce the usage of memory of Adobe reader. Or is this normal?
Also, had an issue with pdf page scrolling, it is very slow.
    Thank you,
    Soma

Add on .. In Adobe Reader go to View > Page Display > select Enable page scrolling. This helps to improve adobe reader slowness. But, just a workaround. Not a solution.
Also, untick "use page cache" under preferences.
